01:54I think maybe a sort of a hard flooring and a rug.
01:59What about tiles like we've got outside the front door?
02:03The pathway tiles, quarry tiles, rátily nice.
02:06Something like that.
02:08What do you think?
02:08She doesn't look at this.
02:12Pick up a couple of choices and then we can look at what fits the room.
02:19A living room's worth of tiles isn't going to come cheap.
02:22So I'm heading to Oxfordshire for a potential restoration that's caught my eye.
02:29I'm going to go and see a car that I have absolutely lost enough.
02:33Not this specific car, but this specific brand.
02:36It's a TVR.
02:38See, TVR kind of hit that sweet spot.
02:41Sports cars, lightweight, homemade, British.
02:45Fast. Really fast.
02:48TVR was born in a Blackpool workshop in the 1940s.
02:52This handmade car was the brainchild of a guy called Trevor, hence the name TVR.
02:58They were a mishmash of borrowed parts and bespoke components.
03:02It's fair to say they were a little rough around the edges, but they acquired a cult following.
03:07This is a TVR that doesn't come around that often.
03:11This is a 1978 Tamar.
03:14And it's really special in terms of TVR lineage because it's the car with the hatchback.
03:18And when you think about it, hatchback isn't an obvious design choice for a sports car, but it just works.
03:24And actually, it's the only one I can find online at the moment.
03:26Which tells me one thing.
03:28It's rare.
03:30Rare's good.
03:31Rare means profit.
03:33Normally.
03:34The current owner bought the car a year ago as a project.
03:38And with fewer than a hundred of these believed to still be on the road in the UK, I can't wait to see it.
03:44And.
03:46Oh, you must be Stephen.
03:47Pleasure to see you.
03:48And you, mate.
03:50Now, I've got to say, I've seen some project cars in some weird places.
03:53Why is it in the garden?
03:55Well, it's the best place to play, isn't it?
03:56So, history of the car, what do you know?
03:59I've had it a year.
04:00Before that, a gentleman had it, but he died and he sat in a garage for two years.
04:04I bought off a guy's missus.
04:06And do you know anything about it before him?
04:07No.
04:08So you can't find the history.
04:09Can we take the cover?
04:10We certainly can.
04:11Have a subject.
04:11With little knowledge of this car's nearly 50-year history, I'll need to look closely for any battle scars.
04:19It's epic.
04:20You forget how small they are.
04:22You've done some work, got it running and driving.
04:24Yeah.
04:24So what's the problem?
04:26There's gearbox rear oil seals leaking.
04:28The engine rear oil seals leaking.
04:31Okay.
04:31So there's a puddle of oil underneath right now.
04:33It drips.
04:34How bad is it?
04:37Oh, there's a tray.
04:38Well, do you mind if I have maybe 10, 15 minutes on my own?
04:42Certainly, you have to stop here.
04:44I'm a big lover of TVRs.
04:46They're everything they represent and stand for.
04:48But I need to be measured because this car also has notorious problems.
04:52But actually, on the face of it, it looks pretty solid.
04:56Yeah, it sits really well for a fiberglass car.
04:58See, while Lotus were making fiberglass cars obsessed with weight, TVR were kind of the opposite.
05:04They were doing fiberglass cars, but they put heavy engines in.
05:07So this car is notorious.
05:08Whoa!
05:11Don't break it.
05:12This car's notorious for being a little bit tail-happy, but that makes it fun.
05:16Yeah, this boot section, this tail is the first TVR that had that kind of hatch look.
05:23God, I already like it.
05:27I don't like the wheels, though.
05:30TVR, just like Colin Chapman, stole things from other car companies.
05:34So this engine came out of a Ford.
05:36Hmm.
05:37There's something missing here.
05:38I think that's the heater box.
05:40As TVRs were handmade, the parts were often bespoke, meaning this won't be an off-the-shelf replacement.
05:48It's a niche car with niche needs.
05:52Oh!
05:54It has this really kind of homemade, have-a-go-hero interior.
06:01There is nothing in this car that's quality, but I love it.
06:05It's awesome.
06:06Ergonomics of a car.
06:08Pfft.
06:09I haven't started it yet, so I'm not going to get too excited.
06:16Come on.
06:17Oh, oh.
06:24Oh, that is rough.
06:27Oh, there she goes.
06:32Okay, indicators work.
06:34Wipers.
06:35I found one!
06:39A TVR with a wiper's work!
06:45I've seen enough.
06:46I have seen enough.
06:50Stephen!
06:50A good Taymar can go for 15k upwards, but this car's up for nearly 11 grand, so I'll need
06:56to knock off a few quid to make it worth the punt.
06:58The car presents really well.
07:01You know, the shell is remarkably good.
07:05I haven't been able to drive it.
07:07All leak, don't really know what it is yet, so that's a bit of a risk.
07:10But in the main, I really love it.
07:11So let's just go straight to the chase.
07:13Take, like, three grand off.
07:15Oh, no, I can't do that.
07:16All right, take 2,800 off.
07:21Can't do that either, I'm afraid.
07:23Any chance of being not five figures?
07:25Like, it starts with a nine?
07:29Nine, yeah, it starts with a nine.
07:30Okay, so we're in a nine...
07:32Yeah, definitely.
07:33...zero, zero, zero.
07:33No, a little bit more than that, I think.
07:36We're at a bit of a stalemate, but I have an idea.
07:41All right, the tarp was held down.
07:43These wheels here, do you have four of them?
07:45I have four of those, yes.
07:47Because they're the original wheels, right?
07:49Yes, they are.
07:50So what if nine five buys the car, I'll give you 50 quid on top of the wheels?
07:55That was fair enough to me.
07:57Is that sold?
07:58Yes.
07:59Yes, I got a teamer.
08:03Yeah, this car, I just have a really good feeling about it.
08:14It really is the sweet spot of 70 sports cars.
08:17There is absolutely no way I can't make profit in this car.
08:20I'm going to say it right now.
08:33Mate, what have you got there?
08:35A car so light that I can push it in, look, with one finger.
08:39Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa.
08:40You have to do the brakes.
08:43Wow.
08:45That is a 1978 TVR Tamer.
08:49That's a proper little monster.
08:51Right?
08:51But it's got all the key ingredients of a great TVR.
08:54Composite body, low in volume, which means it's high in value.
08:58It has that cult following because TVRs do.
09:01The bodywork is actually incredibly straight.
09:03It's complete-ish.
09:05Yeah, I think this is going to be a bit of fun because it's got an engine.
09:08Yeah, it's got an engine.
09:09This car runs.
09:11And there's your engine.
09:13Yeah, it's got an engine.
09:15There!
09:18Did you know that the TVR Tamer was the first TVR to have a heater?
09:23Unlike this one.
09:25This hasn't got a heater.
09:26So there is a gap here, and I have no idea where we're going to get one.
09:30Now, the engine.
09:31The problem is it's got a leak.
09:33Ah!
09:34It's an R leak that could either be tons of cash and tons of problems, TVR,
09:40or it could be an R leak that is a simple fix, Ford.
09:44What did we pay for it?
09:46It was $9,550, and the extra 50 was because he threw in the original wheels.
09:51Are you happy?
09:52Very happy.
09:53Right, let's stick it in the barn.
09:56Do you want to hit that little dingy handbrake?
09:58Yeah.
09:59It's got to be the world's smallest.
10:06The problem is that we don't yet know what's wrong with the engine.
10:10So this is the hold the breath moment because it is a TVR.
10:13Well, I can't hold my breath for that long, so we've got to get it out of here.
10:16The Tamar's clam-style bonnet is hinged at the front,
10:22so to get full access to the engine bay, we want to take it off completely.
10:29You ready?
10:31Right, this is going to get a little bit heavy, buddy.
10:33I don't know about light, but I can't...
10:37I know.
10:37It's probably the heaviest bonnet in history.
10:39Right, lay on those pallets.
10:41Got it.
10:43All right, let's whip the radiator out.
10:46We're going to need a bucket.
10:54Right, I think that's most of the water.
10:56Well, we've got most of it in the bucket.
10:57Right, that should lift.
11:02That should come out.
11:05Our Tamar's engine is a Ford Essex V6.
11:09As for many years, TVR didn't build their own engines,
11:12they borrowed them from other manufacturers.
11:15Right, crane time.
11:17I think she's ready.
11:18I see a Boblet McCurry.
11:21The engine in a TVR sits really far back in the bay
11:24for optimum weight distribution,
11:26proper race car stuff.
11:27but it's making it a real pain
11:29to get the crane in close enough.
11:31I think it's outside, off the ramp.
11:34Old school.
11:42That'll do.
11:43Got it.
11:50Up a little bit.
11:52A trolley under the gearbox
11:53will take the weight when we undo it.
11:55Oh, you put a pad down for your dainty knees.
11:59At my age, you've got to look after meself.
12:02Right, everything clear?
12:03Yeah.
12:04Keep going.
12:06If my engine problem is a Ford one,
12:08it should be affordable.
12:10But if it's a TVR problem,
12:12it's going to get expensive.
12:13She's out.
12:14She's out.
12:15She's out.
12:28We've got the engine out of the TVR Tamar,
12:31and it's clear to see we've got a leak somewhere.
12:33Moment of truth.
12:36Charles, quite a bit of oil.
12:37Look at that.
12:38Yeah, I was looking in that bell housing.
12:42Hopefully it's not gearbox as well.
12:44No, it looks dry up here.
12:45Yeah.
12:46The oil's here.
12:48Yeah, I bet you behind that clutch
12:49it's a main seal.
12:50Right.
12:51Let's stick it on the trolley.
12:52Stick it on the trolley.
12:53A problem with a rear main seal
12:56is the best-case scenario here,
12:58because if it's a cracked block,
13:00we're looking at a whole new engine.
13:02Do you want to make that engine bay
13:03a little bit sparkly?
13:04Yeah.
13:05Yeah?
13:07I seem to get this from Ant.
13:11He gets some nice, clean jobs.
13:13I get all the grubby jobs.
13:15While Duncan spruces up the engine bay,
13:18I need to get the clutch off
13:20to see where the leak in the engine
13:21is coming from.
13:23See, the handy thing about the main seal
13:25on this engine is it's carried inside this plate.
13:27Normally, it's on the block itself.
13:30It's supposed to be a more pliable rubber.
13:33You know, act as a seal.
13:34Think of a cork in a wine bottle.
13:37And this is really hard and brittle.
13:41So that is definitely the offender
13:43of our oil leak.
13:45Oil is escaping via the main seal
13:47and probably a little bit by the sump.
13:49A set of seals and gaskets for my Ford engine
13:54should do the trick.
13:55With those ordered,
13:57Dad and I are off to a reclamation yard
13:59to find the perfect flooring for the living room.
14:01I'm convinced tiles are the answer.
14:04Whatever mum thinks.
14:06These are a reclaimed quarry tile.
14:08Nice glazed top.
14:10I'd love a smaller tile.
14:11Tudor brick.
14:12Quite nice.
14:13Nice hard brick.
14:14Really full of age.
14:15I quite like the red though.
14:17Lay them out and then when you're ready,
14:18just come and give me a shout.
14:19Top man.
14:20Thanks, dude.
14:20Cheers.
14:21Right, so the choice is a brick.
14:24We could do a herringbone,
14:26a staggered,
14:27or
14:27a tile.
14:30I know I told mum we'd get samples,
14:33but hey,
14:34no risk,
14:34no reward.
14:36Just pick one,
14:37brick or tile.
14:38I think I'd prefer that.
14:39I like this one.
14:40Hey, Adam.
14:41Yep.
14:42How are we doing?
14:42All right?
14:43I think we've made very steady progress.
14:45Perfect.
14:46Yep.
14:46Which one have we gone with?
14:47I'm on a hiding to nothing here, Adam,
14:49because his mother,
14:51my wife,
14:52is the problem
14:53because she's not here
14:54and I've got to make a decision.
14:55So I'm going to go for those.
14:56Yep, terracotta tiles.
14:58They are £45 a square metre,
15:00so...
15:0122 square metres.
15:03Nearly 1,000 tiles, I think.
15:0545 times 22?
15:06Yeah.
15:06Okay.
15:07Close on £1,000.
15:08That's a grand.
15:10It's a bit pricey,
15:11but these tiles will hold the warmth
15:13from the underfloor heating beautifully.
15:17What's your mother going to say?
15:18I don't know.
15:19That's your job.
15:20This is a problem.
15:21It's not my problem.
15:23What is my problem
15:24is the leaky TVR TAMAR.
15:28But I'm pinning my hopes
15:29on a £14.50 set of new seals and gaskets.
15:34So first off, the main seal.
15:37So I should be able to just drive
15:40the old seal out.
15:42There she is.
15:52So out with the old seal
15:54and in with the new.
15:56and this is one of those jobs
15:58you get one hit at.
16:06Perfect!
16:09And while I'm at it,
16:10I'm cleaning the surface
16:11and replacing the cover plate gasket too.
16:15And then I'm just going to apply
16:16some of this gasket jointing.
16:23It'll help stick to the block.
16:29Bear in mind,
16:29the inside rubber flap
16:31on the main seal
16:32but it has a contour to it
16:34that leans against
16:35a rotating crankshaft.
16:38So it can be difficult
16:39to get it on.
16:40So a little trick
16:41is cut a little piece of card
16:43like this.
16:45Wrap it around
16:46the crank
16:48into a cone.
16:50That'll help guide
16:51to that rubber on.
17:01Beautiful!
17:04Yeah, that's never going to leak.
17:06Now to replace
17:08that leaky sump gasket.
17:10Duncan's not only
17:11given our sump
17:12a little clean up
17:13and de-grease
17:14he's actually painted it as well.
17:17Thorough job, dude!
17:19No worries!
17:21And now for the tricky bit.
17:32Okay, and just get on
17:33that front pulley.
17:35You guide it on the rear
17:36I'll make sure
17:37this front clears.
17:38Okay, slowly as she goes.
17:42I can hear you breathing.
17:45To get the engine back in
17:47we'll need to line up
17:48the splines on the clutch
17:49and the gearbox.
17:51That's it.
17:55She's in!
17:57After topping everything up
17:59we can find out
18:00if the oil
18:01is staying where it should.
18:03Moment of truth.
18:05Okay, you ready?
18:06Yeah.
18:11We've got great oil pressure.
18:12Go on, do it once more.
18:23Woo!
18:24She sounds mega.
18:25I know, right?
18:26And there's only one way to celebrate.
18:36This is like my childhood.
18:38Not your childhood, it is in black and white.
18:4170s ice lollies, 70s car.
18:46This was actually a cheap fix.
18:47One oil seal, two gaskets,
18:50rocket lollies for the win.
18:52You forget about my time of cleaning, painting.
18:56Your time doesn't count here, buddy.
18:58Come out, he said.
19:00Be fun.
19:02I suppose I've got lollies.
19:03You'll get lollies out of it.
19:04But there's no rest for the wicked.
19:11All right, fellas.
19:13I'm hoping this is a whole room's worth
19:15of reclaimed tiles.
19:17Buying them without mum's sign-off
19:19was a bit of a bold decision.
19:21But I'm sure she's going to love them
19:23when she sees them laid.
19:25These look great.
19:27Would you have tiles in your living room
19:30on the floor?
19:31No.
19:31You wouldn't?
19:32No.
19:33Why not?
19:33Carpet.
19:34Yeah, don't tell mum that.
19:37Right, now that dad has committed us
19:40to the reclaimed clay-fired tile for this room,
19:45and none of us are tilers.
19:48Apart from you, you've tiled before.
19:51Okay, none of us are tilers.
19:52We can either lay them square like so,
19:57or brick-like.
20:00See, these being all handmade,
20:02none of them are going to be square.
20:03We're going to have variations, I think, offset.
20:08We might have to go a bit random.
20:11Random's good.
20:11I think what we call it is character.
20:13Character, yes.
20:14But before we get going, I need to solve the next problem on the TVR list.
20:22Before the Tamar, TVR had a bad reputation for the heating and ventilation.
20:26But what TVR did with this model, with the Tamar,
20:29is they tried to fix it.
20:30And they did it with an inline heater box where that massive hole is.
20:35So inside this mythical air box, there was a heater matrix,
20:39and that stole hot coolant from the engine.
20:42And look, they just bypassed it with that little elbow there.
20:45Looks like a plumbing thing.
20:46Now, here in lies the rub.
20:51I can't get that complete unit and put it in the car because it doesn't exist.
20:56Like so many parts on a TVR, this fix will require a creative workaround.
21:02Luckily, I know a TVR guru who can help.
21:05So I've got my delivery man on the case.
21:08Meeting a chap called Andrew, who apparently is the TVR expert.
21:15Don't know what I'm picking up, but no doubt Andrew will tell me.
21:22Nigel.
21:24Hey, Andrew. How are you doing?
21:25I'm good. Welcome to the TVR Fun Factory.
21:27Thank you very much. Wow, what a place.
21:30So how easy is it to get parts for TVRs?
21:32As an enthusiast, I struggled on many things.
21:37And I started making bits for my own cars.
21:40And people said, and we'd like to buy one of those.
21:43And that's how it all started.
21:44Well, we've got a Tamar.
21:46Tamar was the very first TVR built with an opening boot and hatch
21:50and a small, small limited run.
21:53A very rare car and a special car.
21:56Andrew's done me a solid by supplying all the bits I need to build a heater
22:00and how making a fiberglass box for it to go in.
22:05Well, that's your order already packed.
22:07OK.
22:08Before you go, though, let me show you something.
22:11OK.
22:12We manufacture these in-house.
22:14Sorry to ask a stupid question, but what does it do?
22:16It's the rocker cover.
22:18And if you didn't have that on the top of the engine,
22:21your oil would go everywhere.
22:24Well, it's very pretty.
22:26Well, I bet it's not cheap.
22:28A pair of those is £5.95, powder-coated.
22:32We'll do a set for you for £4.95.
22:35How much value will that add?
22:37I've no idea what it would add to value,
22:39but it would make it more saleable.
22:40Oh, my goodness.
22:43Ah.
22:44All right.
22:45£4.95.
22:47Thank you very much.
22:48Deal.
22:51These rocker covers, they are beautifully made.
22:54I must say, if it makes £1,000 extra on the car,
22:56I'll have the £1,000.
22:58Thank you very much.
23:03I've just come from that guy, Andrew.
23:06That's the airbox.
23:07Yep.
23:08He knows everything about CVRs.
23:09He has suggested that we buy this.
23:14He called it a rocker cover.
23:16He bought rocker covers.
23:19Andrew said they would be absolutely perfect for the TVR.
23:22So, I bought them.
23:25OK.
23:28I mean, look at that.
23:29Isn't that amazing?
23:32How much were they?
23:34£4.95.
23:36You spent £500 on rocker covers.
23:38That's the last time I let Dad go shopping,
23:41but I don't want to kill his enthusiasm.
23:44Oh, Matt.
23:45OK, look.
23:45We're here now.
23:47Come on, you must have liked...
23:48They are lovely.
23:49I mean, they're really lovely.
23:50They are going to make the engine bay look really nice.
23:52Do you want to see the other one?
23:53No.
23:54Can I go now?
23:55Yeah.
23:55Thank you.
24:07The living room at the farmhouse needs to be tiled.
24:11And in a desperate bid to save cash, we're taking on the grunt work ourselves.
24:15Today is quite a big job.
24:18I mean, tiling is a profession.
24:20Some people, you know, think they can just have a bit of a go at it.
24:24They're quite tricky to lay these tiles.
24:27They are all different shapes.
24:29Hey, we'll have a go at anything.
24:30That's what worries me.
24:34You know, I had drawn a plumb line, which is straight with the wall,
24:38but the wall's not straight.
24:39This is the no-going-back point.
24:42So Mum hasn't actually seen these tiles yet?
24:44Nope, they are a mystery.
24:47But it's not just the tiles that are a funny shape.
24:50There's no way this room is square.
24:523-1-8.
24:54Yeah, 3-1-5.
24:55Yeah, it's three centimetres longer, that side of the room,
24:58and if we carry on on that plane, we're going to be wonky against the fire.
25:02To make up for the room being three centimetres bigger on this side,
25:06we'll just gap this side.
25:08Yeah, just creep them a little bit.
25:10Fan them out.
25:11And then by the time they arrive at the fireplace,
25:14they should...
25:15..be square.
25:20Right.
25:21I just hope it works,
25:23as it's a fine line between achieving a rustic farmhouse feel
25:26or a total dog's dinner.
25:28I mean, it's nice because
25:30the house is a bit wonky
25:32and all the tiles are a bit wonky
25:34and the owner's a bit wonky.
25:37And I can't afford to rip these out and start again.
25:40More tiles, let's?
25:41Yeah, keep them coming.
25:42We are chewing through them now.
25:45The job's not finished,
25:47but with the day and my body fading,
25:50I'm going to leave the tricky bit around the fireplace for tomorrow.
25:53I think the fanning out has actually worked really well.
25:57It looks epic.
25:59Like, it really does.
26:00It's the vision for the room.
26:01Yeah, it's starting to come together, this room.
26:03I've got a ache tonight.
26:06My knees and back are done.
26:08I'm tired.
26:14After a good night's sleep,
26:16I'm ready to build the TVR's replacement heater.
26:19But like so many TVR parts,
26:21it's a bit of a hodgepodge.
26:24Matrix.
26:24That looks like a fan from a boat.
26:30Wait, what?
26:33That's the box.
26:34All right, so we've got a fan,
26:36a box that looks like a bedpan.
26:38I mean, this obviously goes
26:39like there.
26:41Oh, it doesn't even fit in the hole,
26:42but it goes there somewhere.
26:44I'll tell you what,
26:44this reminds me of my days of building kit cars.
26:47But how do we mount it?
26:49I quite enjoy a puzzle.
26:50It can't be that way.
26:54It has to sit on the flat.
26:57No, that's not it.
27:02What?
27:04This may not be the right battery.
27:06Let's pop the battery out of the way.
27:08That's it.
27:09That's the way.
27:11The right height.
27:12So we need to find
27:13a five and a half inch battery.
27:16That's a small battery.
27:18They do.
27:19Yeah, but they're expensive.
27:21At 60 quid,
27:23it's not something I'd planned on buying.
27:25All these extras
27:26are going to chip away at the profit.
27:28So if it sits this way in the car,
27:30somehow,
27:31that needs to be fixed there.
27:35In true TVR fashion,
27:37Duncan's knocking together some brackets
27:39to hold the box in place.
27:41Because it's all one-off
27:42and a bit unique,
27:44you know,
27:44you can't actually just buy
27:45what you want sometimes.
27:47So the last thing you want on this, really,
27:49is any little gaps in it.
27:51If the cold air's coming in here
27:52and it can go around the outside
27:55of the matrix,
27:56it won't work sufficiently
27:57as if we seal that
27:59and it can go straight through.
28:01Despite being a bespoke part,
28:03the airbox still needs
28:04a little bit of tweaking
28:05to make it work.
28:06Very TVR.
28:07This top edge is going to be visual
28:09when you open the bonnet.
28:11So I'm going to make
28:12a little bit of an effort
28:13so it looks like a uniform
28:14and nicely engineered part.
28:24How are you going on?
28:25Here we go.
28:28Nice!
28:28So if I hold this in,
28:31if you mark through that hole,
28:33that will give us
28:33our drill hole to mount the fan.
28:36Like the box itself,
28:37the key here is making sure
28:39there are no gaps.
28:41Oh my God, look at this.
28:43We're like airbox creators.
28:45Man, the truth.
28:47Yes!
28:49Oh my God,
28:49that is actually an airtight box.
28:51Grab that battery from the car.
28:53Let's spin it up.
28:53Look at that.
29:00Yeah, although I can feel.
29:01Here, put your finger there.
29:03I can feel it
29:04escaping through that gap.
29:06Oh yeah.
29:08Some standard seam sealer
29:10should sort that out.
29:12We have an airtight heater unit
29:15that is going to make this
29:16a very comfortable drive.
29:18Perfect.
29:23And the living room
29:25has made good progress too,
29:27courtesy of Duncan
29:27and his diamond pattern skills.
29:30Wow.
29:31That looks amazing.
29:33You like it?
29:34Yeah, it's awesome.
29:35Do you think Nana and Grandpa
29:36are going to like it?
29:37Grandpa, yes.
29:38Nana wanted carpet,
29:40but I think once we get
29:41a big rug down,
29:42it's going to feel
29:43like a really cosy living room.
29:44But before Mum sees it,
29:46there's one more job to be done.
29:47So you're going to need this.
29:49This is going to protect your knees.
29:50You see this?
29:51This is a protective sealer.
29:52wet the rag
29:53and wipe the top of the tile.
29:55Easy.
29:57Easy.
29:58Good luck.
29:59Terracotta tiles are porous,
30:01so the sealer helps
30:02to prevent liquid soaking in,
30:04as well as enhancing
30:05their natural colour.
30:08So boring.
30:09Once the sealer is down,
30:11the tiles need grouting.
30:13How are we going, Arch?
30:15Getting there.
30:15Looking good?
30:17I'll come in and give you a hand.
30:19Makes it look a lot better.
30:20Makes it pop, doesn't it?
30:21It's just the way it brings
30:23the colour of the tile out.
30:26Better than the house.
30:27I think so.
30:28It's come out quite nice.
30:29I think it's because we did it.
30:31You get all the glory, you will,
30:33for this.
30:33I'll whiz out,
30:34and you can say,
30:35yeah, I've done all this.
30:36Yeah, I just did it all.
30:36I think it's amazing.
30:37It's a bit make-do and meant.
30:44It's proper TVR.
30:47After a lot of TVR DIY,
30:50it's time to see
30:50if this heater unit actually works.
30:53Right, do you want to jump in the cockpit?
30:55Right, battery's connected.
30:59That little inline motor's connected.
31:02Valve's connected.
31:06Could you make more of a palaver
31:07getting in that tiny car?
31:08I'm getting old.
31:09You're not getting old,
31:10you're getting big.
31:11Go on then.
31:12Right, ready?
31:13Feel the wind on your hair.
31:16I can feel something.
31:17Yeah.
31:19This Tamar now has
31:21heating and ventilation.
31:24This should add a touch of luxury,
31:26but the internal fittings,
31:28they're a bit more budget.
31:29The problem I've got, though,
31:30is that these plastic bits,
31:32you have to admit,
31:33this lets it down.
31:35This is a bit scruffy.
31:37I mean, the handle's almost acceptable,
31:40but...
31:40Oh, that,
31:41because it's got a bit of shiny,
31:42bit of bling.
31:43Grab a flathead.
31:44Let's have this off.
31:45So, you know what?
31:46I've got a pal
31:47who does a little bit of machining.
31:48Thank you.
31:49We want to get this interior
31:50to pop a little bit.
31:52And remember,
31:52back in the day,
31:54the point of these cars
31:55is that they were
31:56individual, handmade cars.
31:58So why wouldn't we
31:59take this opportunity
32:00to lift the value of the interior?
32:03We'll have a word with him
32:04and see what he can do.
32:09With the living room tiles
32:10now sealed and grouted...
32:12Oh, my life!
32:13That is so heavy!
32:15No wonder plumbers
32:16have all got bad backs,
32:17hasn't it, eh?
32:18It's like moving one of your cars.
32:20My plumber and neighbour Andy
32:22is helping us install
32:23a cast-iron radiator.
32:24Let's throw that.
32:27Go on, lift it.
32:29Too much?
32:31It's got to go
32:31half an inch that way.
32:33That's it.
32:33Yeah.
32:34Beautiful.
32:39It's nice watching
32:40somebody work for a while.
32:41Consultancy.
32:44Proper fees for that.
32:45They get paid well,
32:46don't they?
32:46I do.
32:49I've actually got sweats
32:51dripping from my brow,
32:52gentlemen.
32:52Well, that's because
32:53it's about 90 degrees outside.
32:56Right, so,
32:58you all right if we leave you
32:58to get that plumbed in?
32:59Yep, all cool.
33:0010, 15 minutes.
33:01We're done.
33:02Lovely.
33:02Thanks, dude.
33:14An engine fix
33:15and a new heating system
33:16have brought the Tamar's
33:17mechanics up to scratch,
33:19but the bodywork
33:20isn't quite cutting it.
33:23You need something,
33:24something to lift it,
33:25because green bumpers
33:27blend with the green body.
33:28It just doesn't look
33:29classic enough.
33:30I wonder whether
33:31we could get away
33:32with black bumpers,
33:34black valance.
33:35I like the idea
33:36of a black bumper
33:36because it'll tie in
33:37with the number plate
33:38and that'll draw
33:39the eye down.
33:40And then down the centre,
33:41maybe a stripe.
33:43Wait a minute.
33:50See, what if
33:51this whole section here
33:52was just cream?
33:55Cream.
33:55And then, as you say,
33:57black bumpers,
33:58black valance.
34:00I think this is it.
34:01You've just got to be careful.
34:02It doesn't cost too much.
34:03I will make a call
34:04because we ain't going
34:05to do it in the barn.
34:07This sporty-looking paint job
34:08should make our Tamar
34:09more desirable,
34:10but there's another paint issue
34:12that needs urgent attention.
34:14At some stage,
34:15this car used to be blue,
34:16and some of that blue
34:17is now showing through.
34:19I reckon I can do
34:20a little fix
34:20that does this repair
34:22in the barn.
34:22I'm just going to give it
34:25a gentle scotch.
34:27Just key that shiny paint surface
34:29around where the blue
34:30is showing through.
34:33I want to make sure
34:34that my green paint
34:37only hits the green panel
34:38or the parts that are
34:39intended to be green.
34:41And then I'm going to go rogue,
34:43simply with a can of aerosol.
34:45The cool thing about aerosols
34:46is you can have the paint matched,
34:47and that's exactly
34:48what I've done.
34:49And a can of aerosol,
34:51less than a tenner.
34:53And the key is
34:54lots of light dustings.
35:00So that's buried
35:01most of that blue,
35:03but with a light dusting,
35:04it's matte,
35:04it doesn't have a shine.
35:06So this final coat,
35:07I'm just going to have
35:08to get super confident.
35:10Hit it hard.
35:14Now just a flick of the can
35:15to let it spread over
35:17so that way it blends
35:18nicely under the existing paint.
35:20So all I need to do
35:20now is let that dry.
35:24Another detail
35:25seriously letting the TVR down
35:27were those plastic window winders.
35:29So I'm getting some shiny
35:31new aluminium ones
35:32custom made
35:34to add a touch of style.
35:36Just to get the basic design,
35:38I'm going to get a few
35:39rough dimensions from the part.
35:42We've got the basic shape now.
35:43All I'm going to do
35:44is put a bit of a curvature on it,
35:46so it's not just going to look
35:48like a flat chunk of metal
35:49sat in the car.
35:50We're going to try
35:51and make them look a bit sportier.
35:52That is done
35:53and the next step
35:54is to put it on the machine.
35:55In the 70s,
35:57bespoke Tamar parts
35:58would have been handmade,
36:00but today,
36:01CNC machines
36:02can turn parts out
36:03quickly
36:04and with precision.
36:05So this is now
36:07all polished up.
36:09I've got one more handle
36:10to do on the opposite side,
36:12and then we'll package it up
36:13and send it over to Anne.
36:17With all the work
36:19in the living room finished,
36:20there's just one thing left to do.
36:22say something.
36:33It's amazing.
36:34Really good.
36:35This is lovely.
36:36What do you think of the floor?
36:38It's come up better than I expected,
36:40and to be honest,
36:42it gives warmth to the room.
36:44That's a win!
36:45Oh, yeah.
36:46All right.
36:47I concede defeat
36:48to both of you.
36:50It's a complete transformation.
36:51It is amazing.
36:53I love that the beams are exposed.
36:54They keep the character
36:55and the age of the building.
36:57And that?
36:58Wood burner.
36:59That'll keep us warm.
37:01You've got this
37:01really beautiful blank canvas.
37:03So it's natural textures,
37:05the oak, the lime,
37:06every little detail
37:07is done in brass.
37:09Cast iron radiator,
37:10cast iron stove.
37:12And it's beautiful.
37:13It's really good.
37:14Really good.
37:15Now think about it
37:16from a house perspective.
37:16Upstairs bedroom finished,
37:18downstairs living room finished,
37:19we are exactly 50% of the way.
37:22We're halfway there.
37:23Now if we can get
37:24some profit for that car,
37:27I think we move on
37:28to the hallway next.
37:29I'm beginning to feel
37:30that I can live here now.
37:32It's a comfy, warm place
37:33that we could really call home.
37:35Yes.
37:37Success!
37:38And my TVR's come a long way too.
37:40She's almost ready
37:41for a new buyer.
37:43I mean, fair play to Dad
37:44getting the airbox sorted.
37:45How much do you think
37:46he's spent on rocker covers?
37:48Rocker covers?
37:48Go on, how much?
37:50200 quid.
37:51Nearly 500.
37:53500.
37:54I mean, it'll dress that engine up.
37:56Don't encourage him.
38:01I reckon he's done all right.
38:03You think so?
38:04Yeah.
38:04What, you reckon
38:05we're getting 500 quid back?
38:07No.
38:07They do look smart.
38:08They do look good.
38:09Don't tell Dad though.
38:10Next to go on the car,
38:12a special delivery
38:13from my mate's workshop.
38:15Billet aluminium
38:16window winders.
38:18Not just that.
38:20Look, drilled for lightness,
38:22billet aluminium door handle.
38:24Beautiful.
38:24And the piers to resistance.
38:26A billet aluminium lock.
38:29Definitely runs in the family,
38:31doesn't it?
38:31What?
38:32Shiny bits.
38:33Do you want to raise the ramp?
38:39After blagging the original wheels
38:41for 50 quid when I bought the Tamar,
38:43I've had them fully refurbished.
38:45They're magic, aren't they?
38:47Aren't they great?
38:48These are the wheels
38:49they would have had
38:50when it left the factory.
38:51And to get the car race ready,
38:54the bonnet's back from its makeover.
38:57Oh, I'm laying on it.
38:59Done?
39:00Super.
39:01Super.
39:02Dude, that stripe
39:03makes all the difference.
39:05That's the last job, isn't it?
39:06Our Tamar is tamed.
39:09Time to tut up the finances.
39:12So we paid nine and a half
39:13and 50 quid extra for the wheels,
39:15which I think was worth it.
39:16Yep.
39:17So the mechanical parts
39:18totaled £720.77.
39:22But of that 720,
39:24£4.95 were on the bits
39:26my dad bought.
39:27So take the rocker covers out.
39:28Mechanically,
39:29this car's only cost
39:30a couple hundred quid.
39:31£106 on the paint.
39:33My mate did the wheels
39:34for 200 quid.
39:36Means we've spent
39:37£1,107.
39:39It means that this car
39:40owes us
39:41£10,657.
39:45You're thinking 14s?
39:47I'll take 14 now.
39:48Done.
39:49Hold out.
39:49Hold out your hand!
39:50I almost don't care about
39:53the auction for a second
39:54because I just want to drive it.
39:55It's a TVR.
39:57What this car needs
39:59is to find itself sideways.
40:01Don't crash it.
40:02Oh, what?
40:16Tell you what,
40:17you lift your foot
40:18off the clutch,
40:18it just pulls straight away.
40:20Oh, man!
40:22This thing's like
40:23a little race car.
40:24It's noisy.
40:30It's brash.
40:31It's incredibly uncomfortable.
40:33Joe, it's everything
40:35that I wanted it to be.
40:37Everything.
40:39As I sit here today
40:40pressing the fun pedal,
40:41I'm so glad I bought this car.
40:53Oh, my gosh.
40:54I mean, come on.
40:55Have I not got the
40:55happy British car boy face
40:57because driving a TVR
40:59is always going to be fun
40:59because these cars are just
41:01they're wannabe sports cars
41:03but not quite there.
41:05We paid just over
41:05£9,500 for the car
41:06and spent just over £1,000.
41:08So right now
41:09it owes us just over
41:09£10,500.
41:10Is that worth
41:12more than £10,500
41:13and absolutely in a heartbeat?
41:15Yes.
41:16But with a niche car like this
41:18auctions are always a gamble.
41:23And the TVR's guide price
41:25is lower than I'd hoped.
41:27Estimated 6 to 8
41:29to get them interested.
41:31It owes us
41:31£10,600.
41:33Just over.
41:35I'm wobbling now.
41:36We need two TVR bidders
41:37to make an auction work.
41:39Do you think there's two in there?
41:41Please.
41:42Because these are rare as well,
41:43aren't they?
41:43Yeah.
41:44Is that a good thing
41:45or a bad thing?
41:46I don't know.
41:48All right.
41:48Come on in.
41:49Let's bite the bullet.
41:49We're in.
41:50Auction gods,
41:51over to you.
41:52Remember, at Silverstone,
42:04this is a race car.
42:05£4,500
42:06stood ahead of you on the phone.
42:07£4,800 now.
42:07It works on.
42:08£4,800.
42:09£4,800.
42:10£5,000.
42:11This isn't moving quick enough.
42:13Slowing.
42:14£5,000.
42:15All ready now.
42:15£5,500.
42:17Working south of it,
42:18then at £6,000,
42:18whether any more elsewhere.
42:19Six.
42:20Six.
42:20Six.
42:20It helps you.
42:22But it's £6,500.
42:23Do me sell,
42:24then at £6,500.
42:26£6,000, mate.
42:28Come on, push.
42:29Take another two
42:29if it helps you out there.
42:30Push.
42:31I think one guy's on the phone.
42:33Go on, bid on it.
42:34All right, at this stage,
42:35it's about damage limitation.
42:37£7,000.
42:38£7,400.
42:39Ooh.
42:41And £7,476.
42:43Oh, my God.
42:44This is painful.
42:45This is literally, like, torture.
42:48Broadliner, £8,200.
42:49It's a bit of carbon.
42:51That doesn't deserve that.
42:52Last chance.
42:55£8,200.
42:56Yours out there in Prescott.
43:01Now, the auction room was rough.
43:03There's not a lot of bids.
43:06I think the highest bid was a phone bid,
43:07and, of course,
43:08they probably haven't seen the car.
43:11And, you know,
43:11people are less likely to take a risk
43:13if they haven't seen the car.
43:15You know, that's the risk of an auction.
43:18I mean, some days you're going to win it
43:19and some days you're not.
43:20I mean, it feels really awful.
43:22And it's basically a £2,500 loss.
43:26So,
43:28it's one of those
43:28lick your wounds,
43:29get back to the farmhouse
43:30and start again tomorrow.
43:32So I think about
43:32all the savings I've made
43:34in other areas of the house.
43:35Swings and roundabouts,
43:36so I'm actually not that mad about it.
43:37I'm not
43:38going to dwell on it.
43:40I just have to pick my battles.
43:41I just have to pick my battles.
