00:09Here we are on a silky smooth piece of road in Germany and I'm in the finest creation to ever
00:20come out of Germany, the iconic Porsche 911. It's a great car mate but I will take you on
00:27because I think I'm in the finest automotive creation to come out of Germany, the Audi Quattro.
00:33That sounds amazing that Quattro. Well mate, listen, this Porsche 911 has got four pop calipers
00:43that grip the wheels like anchors in all the corners. Yeah, I'll give you that, it's good.
00:48What I have got and you definitely haven't is an Audi Quattro system to get all that performance down onto the road.
00:54So what if you can take the best of these two brands and bring them together like some kind of love child?

02:42You know that I have a sort of sometimes unhealthy, some might say, obsession,
02:47an eye for detail, efficiency, it all comes from my sort of motorsport background.
02:52Well, this is the place that really I can embrace this and not feel out of place.

03:00When it comes to cars, they've got it sus, mate.
03:03Let me tell you.
03:04I'm very excited about this trip because we are going to see one of, if not,
03:09the most iconic estate car ever.
03:12It's a car that is a marriage of both Audi and Porsche.
03:16And it is?
03:17It's got to be the RS2.
03:18It is the Audi RS2.
03:20In 1993, Audi and Porsche joined forces to build the ultimate estate car.
03:27And the RS2 was born.
03:29Audi provided the estate car body with a five-cylinder engine and quattro four-wheel drive.
03:35Then Porsche added a sprinkling of high-performance magic that included bigger turbos and the brakes from a 911.
03:43The result was a 315 horsepower super wagon with a top speed of over 160 miles an hour.
03:50Fast enough to scare super cars while carrying the weekly shop.
03:55I've managed to track this one down.
03:59It belongs to a guy called Pascal.
04:01He's a bit of an Audi freak.
04:03He collects them.
04:04Okay.
04:05Now, I have seen them sell these because they're so rare up to 60,000 euros.
04:10Wow.
04:11Which is quite impressive, isn't it?
04:12It is, yeah.
04:13This one is not 60,000 euros.
04:15It's rather cheap at 43,000 euros.
04:18Well, you know that cheap always rings alarm bells.
04:21There's got to be a reason for it.
04:23And no one just gives the car away that cheap without having a reason to do so.
04:28So let's go and see.

04:47We've come a long way to see this RS2.
04:48The paint work looks much better in the flesh than it did in the pictures.

04:50The colour is absolutely immense.
04:51Pascal, how long have you had it?
04:52I had it now for half a year.
04:53It was a barn find.
04:54You see, I have so many projects and I had no time to start with the work on the car.
05:13Gotcha.
05:14I was kind of hoping that you'd have some paperwork that I can have a look through.
05:17I will check it and you can just feel free to have a look around the car.

05:36The door mirrors, along with the alloy wheels, brake calipers and indicators were all lifted
05:42from the 964 era 911.
05:44But they should be body colour, not silver.
05:47But that can't be why this car is so cheap.
05:51Well, look, you, Pascal's coming back, so you need to have a really good look round it
05:56and find out why it's cheap.
05:58Because if it's been on the wrong side of a tree, you need to discover that.

06:06Accident damage could explain the car's low price.
06:08All right, let's have a look in here.
06:11So, my first priority is to look for any sign of crash repairs.
06:15Here is where the spare wheels sit.
06:17If we lift that up, it's got this sort of circular recess where the spare wheel sits.
06:23And if you do have a rear-end impact, it's almost impossible to straighten that back out
06:28through panel beating.
06:29This one, though, looks like the day it came out of the factory, which is a really good sign.
06:33Yeah.
06:34These are 17-inch rims.
06:37They are actually in need of some attention.
06:39So they're going to need a refurb.
06:41The calipers, which are red and also off a Porsche,
06:44they're red to sort of give you that little accent of a sportiness hiding beneath.
06:48But actually, they also need some attention.
06:51Let's have a look underneath.
06:55There's a little layer of surface rust everywhere.
06:58Still nothing, though, that would account for anywhere near
07:01how cheap this car appears to be.
07:03Yeah, I found the documents of the car.

07:07They don't call it an Audi.

07:20A fully Porsche-tuned,
07:22Audi, inline, five-cylinder, 20-valves, 2.2-litre turbo engine.
07:27Oh, there you go, look.
07:29That is the first thing that I've spotted that's not very good.
07:32This is the auxiliary cooler, and that will need replacing.
07:36But even that's only going to cost a few hundred euros.
07:40But at the moment, I mean, we're either looking at the bargain of the century
07:45or we're missing something major.
07:50So 220,000 kilometres was the last time you see a workshop.
07:55Oh, but it's the date.
07:57Unless there's more.
07:58Is there more?
07:59This car hasn't seen a workshop since 2009.
08:03That's 16 years ago.
08:05Yes, that's correct.

08:08I think we found our smoking gun.
08:11Regular maintenance is vital for any car,
08:14especially one as complex and as highly tuned as the RS2.
08:19Right, well, I don't want to wee on your parade here,
08:23but this is the service record.
08:25Looks pretty full.
08:26It does look full, but just take a look at the last stamp in the book.

08:31Correct.
08:32Blimey, that's a long time ago.
08:34So that's the last time it's seen a workshop?
08:3616 years ago.
08:37So it's not been touched since then?
08:39No.
08:40This is why it's cheap,
08:41because the car's not had any maintenance for 16 years.
08:44You know what that means.

08:46We don't know if the cam belt's been done.
08:48Exactly.
08:51The rubber cam belt degrades over time,
08:53so it should be changed every five years.
08:56This one's more than three times past its use-by date.
09:01If the cam belt snaps wrecking valves and pistons in the process,
09:05an engine rebuild could cost thousands.
09:10There's no way we can drive it.
09:11It's just too much of a risk.
09:12It's got to have a major overhaul in service, hasn't it?
09:15I'm not worried about that.
09:16I'm worried that without driving it,
09:18I've got no idea if the gearbox is shot to bits.
09:20I've got no idea if the drivetrain's in good order.

10:55trailer the car to his workshop nice to meet you i'm mike hi mark but it does mean risking
11:01turning the engine on this is technically the test drive one of the most expensive cars we've ever
11:07bought which is p4 thousand euros for a car and the test drive has been 20 foot how's that test drive
11:15going elvis taking it ever suggested just let the power of the engine take it up
11:21while mike goes for a joyride i'm going on ahead to check out the garage mark runs specialist
11:36audi workshop tkl motorsport he said we can work on a car there and he's even offered us the help

11:51you yeah i also the fan and collector do you have a quattro original quattro you do do you know what
11:59we're bringing in he's had an old audio but nothing more like an rs2 oh nice really cool yeah you like
12:06the rs2 yeah i have also one and some other cars and some other cars you sound like me when i'm
12:15talking to my wife that's the best way i have some i don't know here it comes now i'll come back in a
12:25minute thanks guys all good yeah this workshop is incredible i'm gonna be honest with you it's
12:36actually cleaner than my house it's nice it's really good isn't it nick and i need to get to
12:43work to see if the gamble will pay off all right if you crack the wheels off i can spin the nuts off
12:48with this once you're done the rs2 is a highly engineered complex bit of kit and there's a huge
12:55amount of work just to get to the cam belt the bumper needs to come out the radiator that sits in
13:00front of it then we can get the cover off the front of the engine finally get to the cam belt
13:04and only then do we actually find out whether we've bought a car that has potential to be a
13:10massive bargain or a complete dud mark and i are busy too elvis promise so this is what you do in
13:20the winter is it yeah frozen lake when they're not working on classic aldis like ours every winter
13:27mark and he's team head to finland to drive their quattro's on the ice
13:31i love that what a playground well i'm doing nothing next year in from january to march so
13:40yeah yeah you can help us i don't want to help you i just want to drive
13:46there's no chance of us driving this rs2 anytime soon i think we're ready to lift the bumper away

13:56you can really tell this hasn't been apart for a long long time everything's so rusty because
14:03it's been in there forever 10 years maybe 10 years 10 years i think so it's quite hard to get
14:09off but this car hasn't seen the inside of a workshop for at least 16 years wow that's that's
14:17quite a long time yeah exactly who knows what we're going to find we now need to remove the damaged
14:25auxiliary radiator which provides cooling for the rs2's highly tuned engine
14:29first we need to drain the system of coolant
14:36that coolant you've just drained out of there was probably put in about 20 years ago
14:43yeah it smells bad like it was 20 years in it's been a while
14:47nick and i have been working flat out for two hours
14:50just it's obviously the most difficult one to get to yes exactly
14:54and although we've made some progress we still haven't reached that cam belt
14:58just all proving a little bit difficult
15:00well it's 5 p.m and the garage is shutting up shop
15:05that's it perfect nice so it'll have to be a job for tomorrow
15:09for now i suggest we take the scenic route back to the hotel
15:15mate this is epic isn't it i mean what scenes yeah

15:26got no idea how good or bad it is it's going to be fine that car was carved out of a single block

16:46but it's held in place by a very large and rusty looking bolt

18:16this water pump is not the right water pump
18:19it's a common water pump from the s2
18:21oh really
18:22yeah there is a difference between the s2 and the rs2
18:25the water pump is driven by the cam belt
18:29and to ensure it spins at the right speed for the engine
18:31it's vital it's the correct size
18:33i have the right pump
18:38ah so this is the correct one
18:39this is the correct one
18:40and this is the pump that it's installed
18:42so you can clearly see
18:44you can put them together
18:46because i bet the
18:46yeah look at that
18:47this is the point where the difference is
18:49so the correct one is smaller
18:51and that means that for the same engine speed
18:53this pump will spin faster
18:55pumping more coolant around the engine
18:57giving us a greater cooling effect
18:59for the high performance engine
19:00yes exactly
19:00okay
19:01after loosening the tensioner
19:04we can finally get the old cam belt off
19:07so the cam belt or the timing belt
19:11is what links the cam shaft pulley
19:13together with all of the other pulleys
19:14and crucially with the crankshaft pulley at the bottom
19:17it keeps the different components of the engine
19:19in correct time with each other
19:21and if it's not properly fitted or it fails
19:25it can have devastating consequences
19:27you'd find that as pistons start rising inside the engine
19:31valves would be opening at the wrong moment
19:33the two would collide
19:34and it would be a disaster
19:36there it is the offending article
19:40has definitely got signs of ageing
19:43of wear and tear
19:44we actually have no idea how old it actually is
19:47now we just need to get a brand new cam belt fitted
19:50along with the correct water pump
19:51I wonder if Mike's been as busy

20:30that I can get our car correct
20:32so when we do go to sell it
20:34and put it in the market
20:35it will sell
20:36so I'm going to find all that out here

21:25that we're going to be restoring here

21:29what are people particular about what they're looking for?
21:33it has to be in good condition

22:21the new water pump is ready to slot straight in

22:33now we just need to fit a new tensioner
22:37and hold the new belt in place
22:38and that's the most crucial job done

22:48but it's also a really key component
22:50now that new cam belt's in though
22:52I can put the engine back together
22:54with the front bumper
22:55and of course that new auxiliary radiator
22:57and finally fire this engine up
22:59and drive it

23:02this is an amazing array of cars

23:18they're for a race trade customer events
23:20standing around drinking tea
23:22while I've been out there pounding the streets

23:31the cam belt and auxiliary radiator are fitted
23:34and the RS2 is good to go
23:36so we are ready to actually take it for a test drive

23:43but I will take you for a nice little passenger ride

23:48this is the moment of truth though
23:49has that gamble paid off?

24:29this is from a day where you go

24:38and that is absolutely awesome isn't it?

25:19after driving the car
25:21and finding out that it works absolutely perfectly now
25:24because you've done the belts
25:26is lovely
25:26but don't forget
25:27it's just the beginning of the journey mate
25:28we still don't even know
25:29what else could be wrong with it
25:31I haven't even started digging around in it
25:32so well look
25:33you know don't panic
25:35I reckon the car's good

26:09to match the body colour of the car
26:11to reach the level of perfection
26:14German buyers demand
26:15the tatty wheels and brake calipers need a refurb
26:18and Alex has helped me to remove the silver door mirrors
26:22which need to be repainted
26:23have you worked here very long at TKL?
26:27now three years
26:28three years?
26:29yeah
26:29is it your first ever job?
26:31yeah
26:31they teach me how to do it
26:33yeah that's good
26:34I mean what a great place to start
26:36yeah that's awesome
26:37Alex might still be a trainee
26:40but he's nailed that famous German precision
26:42make sure to mark the cables
26:45before you pull them apart
26:47or take a photo
26:48so we know how it goes back together
26:51oops
26:52oh you messed it up yeah
26:54alright cheeky I'll fix it
26:56don't worry
26:56on a car this valuable
27:02the way it looks underneath also matters
27:04and the subframes and suspension
27:06are covered in unsightly service corrosion
27:08and that's not the only problem
27:11the exhaust is heavily corroded
27:16in fact so much so that the two clamps up here are both corroded completely through
27:20and this box here is pretty much the same
27:23unfortunately that's got to change
27:25time for the toys
27:29it takes an angle grinder
27:34and a pneumatic chisel
27:37to get through the heavily corroded clamps
27:40okay with the exhaust removed we can get on with making the underside look brand new
27:48the first stage is to use a wire brush to remove the corrosion and any loose or flaking paint
27:55and then it's on to phase two
27:58alex and i are using this it's a rust protection based on a product called lanolin which is a naturally extracted oil that actually comes from sheep's wool
28:10but importantly it bonds to the underside of the car giving a layer of protection from things like water and salt and oxygen
28:17the three main components of course of corrosion and rust
28:23definitely does smell like sheep doesn't it
28:26yeah like the wool
28:27yeah
28:28that's obviously why sheep don't go rusty
28:32as it cures this stuff draws out moisture and salt deposits
28:35it's and creates an air and water type barrier that rust can't penetrate
28:40i think that is about it mate

29:03i've sent the wing mirrors off to be painted body color
29:06and now i need to sort out the rs2's wheels and calipers
29:10the real bit of information i've come away with from the audi show was the fact that people
29:15want to get their cars precise so i found this company they're called hymen there's a guy there
29:21called heinz i've spoke to him he said he's got exactly the right paint code for not only the porsche
29:27calipers but for the porsche wheels as well hopefully by the end of the day i might end up with a nice
29:33set of wheels nice set of calipers and they will change the look of the car and get the details right
29:38ah heinz wow that that is crazy this is i thought it was going to be a little paint job
29:50yeah that's a paint job i know them this looks like a factory
29:55because the rs2 wheels and brakes were supplied by porsche
29:59we need a porsche specialist to restore them and boy am i in the right place that will have
30:04a carbon fiber roof and carbon fiber rear end everything is carbon fiber you see it here
30:12completely inside outside it's carbon fiber we are building this car 815 hours at this moment we
30:21don't finish we don't see your 815 hours in only paint yeah only paying you still haven't finished
30:28it yeah that is bonkers just so you know that will be and i'm guessing an 800 000 euro car yeah
30:36at the end of it yeah yeah now i feel slightly embarrassed to show him our tatty wheels and brakes
30:42they are quite bad aren't they it's a second hand we can repair and then we paint the wheels
30:48with the new porsche 1000 is the name of the color original color and you see you have new one wheels
30:57that's gonna be amazing that is amazing and for the very used caliper can we do the same yeah it's
31:03no problem they're gonna look absolutely incredible so uh should we crack on get on with it yeah okay nice
31:11the first step is to sand away the old paint and remove the curb damage which will provide a smooth
31:17surface for the fresh paint it's gonna look incredible when it's finished isn't it yeah they look
31:24crazy once fully sanded down and smooth it's off to be painted
31:33because rs2 enthusiasts won't stump up decent money for anything that's not factory spec
31:39we're turning them back to exact original wheels it's gonna look great in it
31:49and because the calipers are clearly visible through the wheels it's vital they look like new as well
31:58the finishing touch is the porsche logo so this is where we see the porsche script come alive oh and
32:05he's doing it really quickly this is utterly brilliant it may have set us back and called
32:111500 euros but revamping those wheels and calipers will complete the look german perfection dick these
32:20look incredible these are going to set our car apart from the others out there because wheels
32:26and calipers are the shop window dressing of any car and they're going to make this car pop stand out
32:31and hopefully sell
32:41with the old exhaust on the bench you can see just how heavily corroded it is in places little repair
32:46patches all over it and hey look have you seen this before someone's cut the entire silencer box open
32:54presumably to remove all the restrictions to make it louder right yes exactly this is something they
32:58do normally when they want to put the car louder yeah it's uh illegal in germany yeah i'm no fan of diy
33:06modifications like this so it's out with the old and in with the new and here it is what a beauty a
33:13two thousand euros worth by the way but now that we know we've got a good car with plenty of scope for
33:19profit in it i feel like this is money well spent this stainless steel system has larger diameter
33:27tubes than the old exhaust which helps the engine breathe more freely just get these bolts into clamps
33:35although it's not factory spec this is one of the few upgrades rs2 collectors like to see
33:40yeah it looks good doesn't it yeah it looks great now all we need to do is get all the shiny new bits
33:50back on starting with the wing mirrors which have just come back from the paint shop
33:54the fire red calipers and the beautifully refurbed for sure wheels
34:04and i've got the badge perfect
34:06oh yes now this car is looking finished looks really good i've got a great idea for a test we
34:16can put it against you know it's all about performance isn't it with an rs2 so i was
34:20thinking the benchmark for any sort of performance car which this is it's got to be the red one isn't
34:26it the ferrari yeah people always go you know is it as quick as a ferrari is it as good looking as a
34:32ferrari is it as fast as a ferrari i've never beat a ferrari mate it's a great car and it is fast but
34:37it's not ferrari fast it's got quattro four-wheel drive system but what sort of test you know i
34:42reckon we just do a nice big slalom tester how about that that seems like a fairer test you can do it
34:47against the clock yeah mate i'm up for it i've got to ask why have you got a stuffed dog on your arm
34:54i'll explain more about that when we get there
35:02wow what a car do you know it's been decades oh they're so good it's been decades since i last
35:17driven one of these it's just brilliant this car feels absolutely epic and i couldn't be any happier
35:25it feels amazing it's got some incredible performance isn't it even just sat here as a
35:31passenger it feels like it could just keep going it was clever wasn't it it was really clever from
35:37audi because you go we'll get an estate car we'll stick a stupid engine in it we'll go for some porsche
35:42bits on the outside and we'll create this that was a marketing genius listen to it that new exhaust
35:49mate as well as the great sound you can hear coming out those twin tail pipes will also give us a little
35:55bit more performance as well the whole thing's a little bit more big ball it's a high performance
36:00system love it now i understand why there's such a market for them why they're so rare so sought after
36:07and why we had to get the details right after sitting in the barn for 16 years buying this rs2 was a
36:15massive risk and luckily that gamble has paid off but only after we fitted a new cam belt and water pump
36:24and they weren't the only essential replacements under the bonnet
36:28the wheels and calipers were vital to get the car looking factory fresh as were the door mirrors
36:35and our single biggest spend was that stainless steel exhaust
36:40the car now owes us a shade under 47 000 euros which should leave plenty of room for profit when we
36:47come to sell
36:51but before we get it listed there's just time for a face-off with an italian stallion
36:56i'll bet you're happy with that yeah you weren't messing about no honestly i thought if you're
37:09going to get a car you might as well get a fast red one so we're looking at as you know 3.6 400 horsepower
37:140 to 60 four and a half seconds it's red it's got a prancing horse my guess that's a ferrari
37:20you are going up against this though which is an estate car yes okay and a little estate car with
37:28a 2.2 liter engine a measly 315 horsepower but it does have the quattro four-wheel drive system but
37:34this is rear-wheel drive so it's like bringing a shotgun to a fistfight it's really unfair isn't it
37:40well yeah it does feel quite unfair i mean i love that car but this is a ferrari mate that's going to be
37:45a tall order yes on paper it looks like an easy win for the prancing horse
37:54but this is not a drag race it's going to be a slalom race and just to even the playing field a
38:01little bit more i have another trick up my sleeve right then fella well listen you have fun but as
38:06you know this isn't really a real world test is it because if it was a real world it would be like
38:11this nice sunny and dry it's lovely no it'd be more like vassalos yeah bring on the rain sunshine

38:28typically rain slick bavarian roads where the rs2 was born that's ridiculous that is a lot of water

41:56ferrari yeah i'm glad you're sitting down quattro time that wow three seconds faster you know what
42:03that's amazing and i'm kind of surprised but not having felt it because it feels that much better
42:09it's got so much grip particularly on that point where you you put the power down all four wheels
42:14are getting traction on this wet track here that's incredible that's amazing right uh i think you've
42:21made a soup in the back so i better go and talk that out what a car honestly what a car
42:27yeah look at that you are well on your way to making a vegetable and melon soup dog looks all

42:43it really is a good car i know this was all a bit of fun but it does prove a point doesn't it
42:46you know the quattro four-wheel drive system in a family car revolutionized the way that we moved
42:52our families around in a sporty way so right i mean it gives you the sportiness you desired and
42:58you buy one of those if you got the cash but then you grow up and you get responsibilities you don't
43:01want to lose the fun and that is what this car's for unfortunately now we've proven the point and we
43:07know we've got a really good car it's time to get it sold yeah okay all right let's do it shortly after
43:13listing it our rs2 was bought by a swedish enthusiast for 56 000 euros given us a nine grand profit
43:20it's a brilliant result and the perfect way to end our german adventure
