US President Donald Trump claimed China “doesn’t want” to invade Taiwan, in response to a reporter’s question on Monday afternoon. Trump added, “I don't see that at all with [Chinese] President Xi [Jinping]. I think we're going to get along very well as it pertains to Taiwan and others.”

Trump also noted that the US has a “very good trade relationship” with China, hinting that a “very strong trade deal” could emerge from their upcoming talks in South Korea.

00:00Yeah, President, yeah, your Secretary of War, in his Shangri-La speech, and I think it was made,
00:06warned about the potential likelihood or threat of President Xi ordering an invasion of Taiwan.
00:13I think we'll be just fine with China. China doesn't want to do that.
00:18First of all, the United States is the strongest military power in the world by far.
00:22It's not even close. Not even close.
00:24We have the best equipment, we have the best of everything, and nobody's going to mess with that.
00:30I don't see that at all with President Xi. I think we're going to get along very well as it pertains to Taiwan and others.
00:44Now, that doesn't mean it's not the apple of his eye, because probably it is, but I don't see anything happening.
00:50Since Trump has a nose for power, and you know, he has an instinct for power, and he doesn't look at it.
01:20He doesn't like to be the least powerful person in the room.
01:23He wants to be the most powerful person in any room.
01:28And so, for this reason, I don't see him as making concessions that he feels fundamentally endanger his position or that of the United States.
01:40Well, for this reason, I don't see him as against me.
01:46I don't know.
01:46So, let's see.
01:47So, let's go.
01:48Let's go.
