The government will allow thousands of rapists and other violent criminals to be released early from prison, Shadow Justice Minister Kieran Mullan warns. It comes as MPs will debate the Sentencing Bill, aimed at relieving prison overcrowding.

00:00Today MPs are going to be asked to vote for legislation that will allow some of the very worst offenders out of prison earlier.
00:07This is people who are guilty of things like rape, child sex offenders, attempted murder, causing death by dangerous driving, really, really serious offences.
00:16And the government plans to ask Labour MPs to vote to let them out of prison earlier.
00:20I don't think that's what victims want, I don't think that's what the public want, and we're trying our best to stop that from happening.
