02:31But we're looking forward to not having the dogs and just pampering ourselves
02:37And I think the plan is to try and do as many new things as possible
02:41And it's going to be a holiday of literally doing as many first things as we can
02:47Also heading for the high seas for the first time, a mum and daughter duo Jackie and Tamara from London
02:55We've been to so many places, done so many things, it does help that we live together
03:00So we're kind of totally in tune with each other
03:03But it also helps that we share a lot of interests
03:05So that just makes it more interesting
03:08Until now, these regular travel buddies have always flown to their holiday destination
03:13But no need to worry about that today, ladies
03:16So mum's going over the travel documents for the cruise
03:20She's looking at luggage tags and the embarkation
03:23Are you excited?
03:24I am, I am
03:25I think she's going to cruise before
03:27It's all too real
03:29I don't think I considered myself a cruise person
03:32It's the pick-up
03:33It's the pick-up
03:35Yeah, I can see pictures
03:37For me, it was always about the flight, the adrenaline, the being in the air
03:42Is it big?
03:44Is it big case?
03:45I don't think I considered myself a cruise person either, to be fair
03:49What did you pack?
03:51Clothes
03:51For every bench money
03:53I'm a frequent flyer
03:56So to me, you fly, it's so quick
03:59You get to your hotel, you do what you need to do
04:01But with Jackie approaching retirement
04:04More leisurely holiday at sea might be just the ticket
04:08Excited
04:10I hope that my mum gets a chance to relax
04:14To slow down
04:16To enjoy the sea
04:17Because she really does love the sea
04:19Now she's in wind-down mode
04:21She needs to learn how to wind down
04:23Well, your ship sails this evening
04:26And the voyage of discovery will begin
04:28Departing from Tilbury in London
04:33The ship will sail onwards to Amsterdam
04:35Where our holidaymakers start their adventures
04:38They will sail down the Atlantic coast to Portugal
04:43Stopping off at the vibrant coastal city of Lisbon
04:46Before heading further south to the Sunny Med
04:49And the exotic British overseas territory of Gibraltar
04:54But before all that
04:59The ship is now docked at its first stop
05:01The Dutch capital of Amsterdam
05:04Famous for its laid-back charm
05:08Characterful canals
05:09And quirky architecture
05:11Amsterdam grew from a small fishing village
05:14Into a centre of trade and finance
05:16Once the river Amstel was dammed
05:18To control flooding in the 13th century
05:21It's now a top city break destination
05:26Offering a host of cultural and culinary experiences
05:29First to venture off the ship
05:32And soak up all this unique
05:34Cosmopolitan city has to offer
05:36Are James and Damien
05:37We're in a major city, aren't we?
05:40But like when we're in London
05:41It's so busy
05:42And I don't feel like that here
05:44Now, I mean
05:44Everything we want to see today
05:46Is actually within walking distance
05:48It's very accessible
05:49It's very compact
05:49No, it is
05:50I just can't get over the number of bikes
05:55It's unreal
05:56So we arrived in Amsterdam
06:00And we thought to ourselves
06:01What's the best way
06:02Is seeing Amsterdam
06:04And we looked around
06:05And we could see bikes
06:06And we could see canals
06:08And we thought
06:09We'll go on the canal
06:10Didn't fancy the back in the stairs
06:12And what better way
06:15To start their adventures on water
06:17Than going from a big ship
06:19To, well
06:19A much smaller one
06:20Good morning
06:23How are you guys going today?
06:25Hiya, how are you?
06:25Yeah, very well, thank you
06:26Good, thanks
06:26How are you?
06:27Wonderful, thank you
06:28So my name's Steph
06:28I'm going to welcome you guys
06:29Aboard today
06:30Oh, nice to meet you
06:31I'm James
06:31Lovely to meet you
06:32I'm Damien
06:32Lovely to meet you
06:33I can help you guys on board
06:34If you like
06:35Lovely, thank you very much
06:36Oh, thank you
06:36No worries
06:37Watch your step
06:38Thank you
06:39Hiya, morning
06:39Their small boat trip
06:43Taking in the city's canals
06:45Starts on the Amstall River
06:46It's lovely to see the city
06:51From this angle, isn't it?
06:53You'll notice even with the cars
06:55And everything
06:55It's very quiet and peaceful
06:57On the water
06:57Do you know I'm feeling a bit relaxed?
06:59Yeah
06:59Obviously, we've got busy jobs
07:01And lifestyles and things
07:03Of course
07:03And we breed and show dogs as well
07:05So it takes up a lot of our time
07:06Oh, absolutely
07:07And it's just nice
07:08We have no time for ourselves
07:08We have no time for ourselves
07:09Oh, you guys need this then
07:10Yes
07:11Well, you just take it all in, guys
07:14And relax
07:15Whilst James and Damien
07:18Are enjoying the sights
07:19On their little ship tour
07:20Jackie and Tamara
07:21Are getting acquainted
07:22With their new home
07:23For the week
07:24We've got a gentleman
07:25Playing the piano
07:26Here he is
07:28I don't know if you can see him there
07:29Jackie will be making
07:31Many entrances here
07:32On the evening
07:33In her nice ball gown
07:35Looking lovely
07:36On a scale of 1 to 10
07:38How happy are you?
07:3910
07:3912
07:40She's 12
07:41Come on, girls
07:45Show us your room
07:46It's the next one up
07:47You're so right
07:471148
07:48This is high
07:49Let's do this
07:53Okay
07:54So this is our car room
07:57Here's the bed
07:58There's Jackie
07:58A cruise ship
08:01It's like a floating hotel
08:03Because you wake up somewhere
08:05Every day
08:06In a new location
08:07And then here's our
08:09Bathroom area
08:09And our luggage
08:13Was waiting for us
08:14We didn't have to drag it
08:15Anywhere
08:16That's good for all your clothes
08:17I was happy with the amount
08:20Of hangers we had
08:21I've never been somewhere
08:22Where we've had
08:22Excess hangers
08:23For the things we've bought
08:25Ooh
08:26One and done
08:27Oh my goodness
08:28Well done you
08:29If I could achieve
08:30One thing on the cruise
08:31I'd hope to achieve
08:32To see if it's like
08:33A way of life
08:34That I could adapt
08:35A different kind of holiday
08:36That I would enjoy
08:38Not only with mum
08:39Maybe I'll round up
08:40All the young hot girls
08:42That are my friends
08:43And we'll go cruising
08:44The seven seas together
08:45Shall we cheers to
08:48Cheers darling
08:49Cheers to our first cruise
08:50Yep
08:51This week our two pairs
09:06Of first time cruisers
09:08Are kicking off their maiden voyage
09:10In the Dutch capital
09:11Amsterdam
09:12And while Jackie
09:14And daughter Tamara
09:15Spent their morning
09:16Enjoying the ship
09:17Cheers once again
09:19Cheers honey
09:19James and Damien
09:22Have gone exploring the city
09:24This is just so beautiful
09:25And peaceful
09:26Starting with a canal tour
09:28So coming up here
09:30On the left hand side
09:31We have a very famous view
09:32Of Amsterdam
09:33So these are called
09:34The dancing houses
09:35So when we get opposite them
09:37You'll see they're very wonky
09:38Oh yes
09:38I see that
09:39They're going all over the place
09:41Another name for them
09:42Is the drunken friends
09:43Might be a little bit
09:44More appropriate
09:44So you'll see this a lot throughout Amsterdam
09:48Little crooked buildings
09:49It's because Amsterdam was actually built on wooden poles
09:52To support the buildings
09:53Because it was all marshland
09:55There's a lovely church there
09:56What's that one?
09:57Oh this is the million euro view
09:58What's that?
09:59So Claude Monet used to live in one of these houses
10:02You're joking
10:02Yeah I know
10:03And his view of his window
10:05Looked directly down that canal
10:06And he painted that view
10:08And the painting sold for a million
10:10A million euro
10:11Can we just go back
10:12So I can take some pictures
10:13And sell them?
10:16Not sure they'll fetch a million James
10:18So what did you think
10:20Of the million euro view?
10:21I thought it was really nice
10:22I've you know
10:23I just really enjoyed
10:25Absolutely everything
10:25On that canal
10:26And just to see
10:28Some of the sights
10:29That you wouldn't normally see
10:30Do you know Damien
10:35This is just a lovely way
10:37I'm glad we've done this
10:38It's a nice way to see Amsterdam
10:39It gave us an opportunity
10:42I suppose to explore the city
10:43Without all the stress
10:45Yes
10:45And to see it from
10:46A really nice kind of low perspective
10:48Yes
10:49I thought
10:49It was a nice way
10:50Easing us into
10:51What to expect on the cruise
10:53I think
10:53Woohoo
10:54As James and Damien
10:56Are finding their sea legs
10:58On the canal
10:59It's to the start
11:00Have a wonderful holiday
11:01Cheers to start
11:01A nice holiday
11:02With several hours
11:06Till the ship sets sail
11:07On to its next destination
11:09Lisbon
11:09Are you excited?
11:11Very excited
11:11Woohoo
11:12Jackie and Tamara
11:14Are heading off portside
11:15For their own Dutch adventure
11:17Jackie's in the clog
11:20Welcome to Amsterdam
11:22Woohoo
11:23The Netherlands sells
11:25Over 3 million pairs
11:27Of wooden shoes
11:27Every year
11:28And it's also
11:29The second largest
11:30Exporter of cheese
11:32In the world
11:32Mum and daughter
11:34Are going to a place
11:35That houses both
11:3620 kilometres north
11:38Of the port
11:39In the picturesque
11:40Fishing village
11:41Of Wallendam
11:42Traditional artisans
11:43Still make clogs
11:44By hand
11:45And produce a range
11:46Of local cheeses
11:47All giving a flavour
11:49Of old Amsterdam
11:50Look at the clog
11:54The clog
11:54Is really nice
11:56And the tulips
11:57It was very cute
11:59Very quaint
12:00They had like a little
12:01Windmill display outside
12:02Which was very nice
12:03And then the real action
12:05Was on the inside
12:07Jackie and Tamara
12:09Will be putting their
12:11Carpentry skills to the test
12:12But first
12:13The cheese beckons
12:14Oh
12:15Oh
12:15Interesting
12:16It is
12:17The room smells
12:18Very cheesy
12:20Well it is a shop
12:22Selling all the
12:22Locally made cheeses
12:23And there's plenty
12:25To tickle the taste buds
12:26Wow
12:29Is this
12:30Stroopwafel cheese
12:31I wonder what
12:32That tastes like
12:33Oh
12:33So what's that
12:35Fenugreek
12:36That's tomato and olive
12:38Oh
12:38Whiskey
12:39Oh
12:39Now that is interesting
12:41What is this
12:42Pickle
12:43There was a
12:44Lot of cheese
12:45In the cheese room
12:46Is this rosemary
12:48Yes it is rosemary
12:49Oh
12:50A lot of interesting flavours
12:52I never knew
12:53There was a port
12:54Flavoured cheese
12:55Stroopwafel cheese
12:57Oh truffle
12:58That's
12:59I do love
13:00Some truffle cheese
13:01I'm not gonna lie
13:02Nettle cheese
13:04Yeah nettle
13:05I'm like
13:06Gouda
13:07This is some
13:08Gouda cheese
13:09Oh
13:09Oh very
13:12Gouda
13:12It's actually
13:13The most popular
13:14Cheese in the Netherlands
13:15And it's most famous
13:16All this makes you hungry
13:19Fortunately
13:20There's plenty
13:20To try
13:21We went on
13:23To do
13:24Cheese
13:24Tasting
13:26Tasting
13:26Yes
13:26Cheese tasting
13:27With very interesting
13:29Flavours
13:30Yes
13:30Hey hello
13:31Hi
13:32Would you like to try
13:33Stroopwafel
13:35It's a cookie cheese
13:36Yes
13:36It's a little bit sweet
13:37Yes
13:37Okay
13:38It's a nice
13:39It's a nice difference
13:40Because you're not used
13:41To something sweet
13:42Oh
13:42That's sweet
13:47It's very interesting
13:49Wow
13:50That's sweet
13:50That's
13:51Yeah
13:51Holland as a whole
13:53I think
13:53Is known for
13:54Stroopwafels
13:55I've never had
13:56A sweet cheese before
13:57No
13:58I mean
14:00We usually have cheese
14:01On our pasta
14:01Pizza
14:02But never sweet cheese
14:05Mmm
14:05It's very interesting
14:08Very nice though
14:09Yeah
14:09Kind of sweet
14:10Like this was like a caramel
14:12Cheese
14:14We'll leave Jackie and Tamara
14:16To carry on challenging
14:17Their taste buds
14:18Meanwhile
14:20Back on the canals
14:22So do you know
14:23What we noticed
14:23When we first arrived
14:24In Amsterdam
14:25Yeah
14:25There is hundreds
14:27Of bikes
14:27So many
14:28Try millions
14:29It's a school day
14:31For James and Damien
14:32With guide Steph
14:33Yeah
14:33There's about
14:341.3 million bikes
14:35In Amsterdam
14:36Oh my god
14:37Yeah
14:37And the population
14:38Is only about
14:38950,000
14:39So bikes
14:40Actually outnumber people
14:41There's more bikes
14:42Than there is
14:43That's crazy
14:43There is yeah
14:44And apparently
14:46They fish 15,000
14:47Out of the canals
14:48Every year
14:49Do you know
14:51Sometimes
14:51I can't believe
14:52How many houseboats
14:52There are
14:53Bet Steph knows
14:54How many
14:55There's so many
14:56But actually
14:57It's limited to
14:572,500
14:58For the entirety
14:59Of Amsterdam
15:00Oh my god
15:00You know that as well
15:01Yeah I do
15:02I'm going to start
15:03Writing these down
15:03I'm sure Steph
15:05Has more
15:06So how many bridges
15:07Are there in Amsterdam
15:08So Amsterdam
15:08Actually has
15:091,281 bridges
15:11You're kidding
15:12Oh
15:12Nope
15:12That's a lot of bridges
15:14So it's more than Venice
15:14I'm going to be
15:15Philly facts
15:15I hope they've got
15:16A quiz on board
15:17Because I tell you
15:17I'm ready for it
15:18Let's see what you remember
15:20I'm sure Steph
15:21You said something
15:21Something like
15:22About 1,380 bridges
15:24Or something like that
15:25I was taking in
15:27Everything Steph
15:27Was saying
15:28I had a couple
15:29Of glasses of champagne
15:30And I
15:31I completely forgot about it
15:32I completely forgot the numbers
15:33Mightn't be looking
15:34Too good for the quiz
15:35But I think
15:36We're ticking chill time
15:37I think this has got to be
15:40The best way to see Amsterdam
15:41Just relaxing
15:42With a glass of champagne
15:43I think I just felt
15:46A huge weight
15:47Lifting off my shoulders
15:48And as I started to relax
15:49I wondered when
15:50The holiday was going to kick in
15:53And it was
15:54As soon as we were on that boat
15:56I just immediately felt
15:59Relaxed
16:00Comfortable
16:00And relaxed
16:01And really looking forward
16:02And I thought
16:03I really hope
16:04The rest of the cruise
16:05And the holiday
16:06Is going to be like this
16:07Thanks very much
16:08And I can give you a hand
16:09Watch the step
16:10At the cheese farm
16:16Jackie and Tamara
16:17Are also getting a taste
16:18Of Dutch delights
16:19I have another one
16:20You probably don't have at home
16:22Jalapino smoked cheese
16:24That's me
16:24That's you
16:25She's not good with spice
16:27Oh no
16:27No
16:28I will do the tasting
16:29For the both of us
16:30Oh
16:30And it's smoked
16:32Oh wow
16:33We definitely
16:34Were eating out her stock
16:36Bless her
16:37But it was
16:38Very enjoyable
16:39I would have to say
16:40My favourite cheese
16:42Maybe the jalapeno cheese
16:43It had a little kick to it
16:44Oh yeah
16:45Oh yeah
16:45If it's hot
16:47I don't want that
16:49It had a little
16:50To it
16:50So it was quite
16:51It was quite nice
16:52Mum doesn't like
16:53Anything too spicy
16:54No
16:55So we left that one
16:56In the showroom
16:56Unfortunately
16:57Another one
16:58It's smoked goat cheese
17:00Wow
17:00There we go
17:02Thank you
17:03If you like smoke
17:04And if you like goat cheese
17:05That's a good cheese
17:07This is my favourite
17:09Really?
17:10That's really good
17:12I like this
17:12I like this
17:14It's really creamy
17:14I don't think I've ever had
17:16Smoked goat cheese
17:18Mum has found a new favourite
17:19Yes
17:20It's the smoked goat cheese
17:22Is my absolute favourite
17:23Thank you so much
17:25Thank you
17:25You're welcome
17:25Thank you for visiting
17:27Thank you
17:27Having feasted on local cheese
17:31Jackie and Tamara
17:32Are moving next door
17:33To explore something else
17:35That's quintessentially Dutch
17:36Oh
17:38Look at the clog wall
17:40The wall
17:41You see these
17:43These are a bit of me
17:44Oh this is cute
17:45A little pink one
17:46The only clog that I know
17:48Is a croc
17:49And it's a wooden shoe
17:53Or it's a shoe
17:54A wooden shoe
17:55That people wear on their feet
17:57I don't know why they wear clogs
17:59Wait have you seen this
18:01Oh my goodness
18:02Look at this one
18:03It's Donald
18:04Sorry I couldn't resist
18:07Wow
18:08I've never actually figured out
18:10Why it's a fashion choice
18:12I imagine it's steeped in history though
18:15Well you're in the right place
18:17To find out
18:18Clogs or wooden shoes
18:20Date back to the early 13th century
18:22In the Netherlands
18:23Known as klompen in Dutch
18:25Factory workers
18:27Artisans and labourers
18:29Clomped around in these noisy
18:30But sturdy safety shoes at work
18:33They're now a national symbol
18:35And still worn in some rural areas today
18:37And there is one clog expert
18:41That will be able to help
18:42Tamara and Jackie
18:43Find out all about them
18:44Ladies
18:46Welcome to the world
18:47Of wooden shoes
18:49My name is Marco
18:50And today I'm going to teach you
18:53How to make a wooden shoe
18:55Oh
18:56We've been making wooden shoes
18:59In the Netherlands
19:00For more than 1,000 years
19:02With old tools
19:04Like you see them here
19:05And I am actually
19:07One out of 25 wooden shoemakers
19:10Who still makes them by hand
19:12So today you are going to make
19:14Your own wooden shoes
19:15But before you are going to start
19:17You have to put on the right clothing
19:20That's a big bag
19:21That's a big bag for two pairs of overalls
19:23Okay
19:24Wow
19:25Thank you
19:25Thank you
19:25There you are
19:26Thank you
19:27See you when you dress for the job then
19:30Something else the Netherlands is famous for
19:36Is its iconic blue and white Delft pottery
19:38Made here since the 1500s
19:42It's enormously popular with tourists
19:44And it's inspired the boys to have a go themselves
19:48At crafting their own souvenirs
19:50To bring home to their beloved pups
19:52Hi
19:53Nice to meet you
19:55I'm James
19:55Hello
19:55Welcome
19:56You're Alina
19:56Hiya
19:57I'm Damien
19:57Welcome
19:57Alina runs a pottery studio
20:00Where visitors can hand paint
20:02All sorts of ceramics
20:03So could we have these ones
20:05Yeah
20:06Two of them
20:06Okay
20:06Yeah
20:07I'll just grab them for you
20:08James and Damien have chosen a dog bowl each
20:11I had my eye on them spaniel bowls
20:13Yeah
20:14I know
20:14So that's two of the spaniels sorted
20:16So what I was thinking was
20:19I was thinking of having a band of solid colour around
20:23And then just paint on the name
20:27And maybe a little paw print or something either side
20:30So cute
20:30You came with a plan
20:32I did come with a plan
20:33Two of our dogs
20:34They don't have dog bowls
20:36No
20:36So Phoenix and Aurora
20:38Yeah, because they're the pups
20:39They're new babies in the family
20:40Yeah
20:41I was thinking about trying to do something to remember my trip to Holland
20:46No, no, no
20:47Your tulips or something like that
20:48I'm keeping this simple
20:49Tulips is very cute
20:51Yeah
20:52Don't listen to him
20:53And you've got to judge them at the end
20:55No, no, there's no judgment
20:56No, no, no, you need to
20:57Because obviously when we breed and show dogs
20:59We're very competitive
20:59We're very competitive
21:00So you need to tell us that mine is obviously the best, yeah?
21:03We'll see
21:04With the pottery, we were really competitive, weren't we?
21:08Yes
21:08And that reflects how we really are in our everyday life as well
21:12So I could do a dark green band there
21:15And then possibly tulips in Phoenix
21:17Yeah, tulips
21:17I've got to be able to do a tulip
21:19Yeah
21:20I'm sure this nice lady can teach you how to
21:23Yeah
21:23Alina, that's cheating if you're getting help
21:26I think I'm just going to come up with a plan
21:28And then take it from there
21:29And no help in him
21:31No, okay
21:31Because then this is a competition, yeah?
21:35Everything's a competition
21:36This is a competition
21:37All right
21:38Shall we start?
21:39Shall we start?
21:39Let the throwdown commence
21:42It's the first day on land for the cruise
21:57And with the ship docked in Amsterdam
21:59Our holidaymakers have got the day to explore the sights
22:02Before setting sail tonight
22:04Tamara and Jackie have been exploring the ship
22:09We've got a gentleman playing the piano
22:12Here he is
22:14I don't know if you can see him there
22:15Before taking off for a cheesy nibble or two
22:18Mmm, that's sweet
22:20It's very interesting
22:22And James and Damien started their day with a mini cruise along the canals
22:27So these are called the dancing houses
22:29Before getting crafty for their canine friends
22:33Now at the clog factory
22:35Oh, Jackie and Tamara have gone dutch
22:38Ready for work?
22:39So ladies, the best way to cut
22:41Is to start at the end of this block of wood
22:45Start gently cutting
22:47Hit it firmly on the working bench
22:50And then gently start cutting into the block of wood
22:54I feel good
23:00I think the outfit helps because it makes you feel as though you're a genuine shoemaker
23:05Clogs start their life as a block of popular wood
23:10The shape is then carved using a guillotine cutter
23:14Before a hole is scooped out for the foot
23:16Nowadays machines help speed up the process
23:20So Marco, bless him, gave us a block of wood
23:24And wanted us to carve it into a clog
23:28Wooden shoe
23:29A wooden shoe
23:30Oh my goodness, my shoulders
23:32It requires strong shoulders and iron determination
23:36I don't think they're going to make a wooden shoemaker out of me yet
23:41The longer the piece of wood tissue cut off
23:45The better the result will be
23:47Oh look, I'm getting the hang now
23:49This is like peeling sugar cane
23:51It's very hard
23:54It's not something easy to do
23:56It was very labour intensive
23:58Put your back into it
24:00I'm putting my back into it
24:01And your shoulder into it
24:03I'm putting everything I have into it
24:04Yeah, okay
24:07I don't see how this is going to become a wooden shoe
24:11I think I've shaved more than you, you know
24:14My pile of wood is bigger, so I don't think so
24:17I don't think so
24:18I think mine's looked more in keeping
24:20Tamara, if you go on like that
24:23You're going to end up with a toothpick
24:25Back in central Amsterdam
24:31James and Damien are working like dogs
24:34For, well, they're dogs
24:36Do you want to tell me a bit more about your doggies?
24:39Yeah, of course
24:40So we got into breeding Cocker Spaniels about 12 years ago
24:44We've currently got six dogs
24:47So we've got Isla
24:48Then we've got Freya
24:50Then we've got Artemis
24:51And then we've got Rocket
24:52Yeah, and then Aurora
24:54And Phoenix
24:55And Phoenix
24:56So Aurora and Phoenix are the two babies
24:58Yeah, there's two babies
24:59They're only seven months old
25:01It all started when they inherited just one Cocker Spaniel
25:05Fudge
25:05When James' father passed away
25:07So we'd done the most sensible thing ever
25:12We sold a flat
25:13We bought a house and everything
25:14Just so we could bring Fudge to live with us
25:17And we saw an advert for a dog show
25:19So we thought, oh, we'll go along
25:21We'll have a look
25:22And then, yeah
25:23Got a little bit
25:24That turned into two dogs
25:27It turned into three dogs
25:29It turned into six dogs
25:30Now six
25:31We've just had two pups
25:32So they've not got balls yet
25:35So this is why we wanted balls
25:36These are your puppy balls
25:37He's doing one for Phoenix
25:39And this is one for Aurora
25:40Do you guys make time to be creative together?
25:47Not really, no
25:49We live such really busy lives, unfortunately
25:52This is why it's nice to get away on this cruise
25:55So we can spend some time together
25:57And we connect
25:58And we never do anything like this, do we?
26:00No, this is the first time you've ever tried anything artistic
26:03And it's nice just to do something a little bit creative
26:06It was quite therapeutic to sit there and talk to a stranger
26:09And, you know, we'd never do that at home
26:12We'd never paint
26:13We'd never do crafts or things
26:14And it was just nice to do that
26:17Yeah, it was
26:18It really was
26:19So how are the doggy designs coming along?
26:21I think I'm done
26:24What do you think?
26:26I spelt it right, haven't I?
26:28A-U-R-O-R-A
26:31Whoopsie
26:32Oh
26:33Let me see
26:34Let me see
26:36It's A-U-R-O-R-A Aurora
26:39A-U-R-O-R-A
26:42I mean, you can do a little O, maybe
26:43Are you missing an O?
26:45I'm missing an O, an R, and an A
26:47Oh, okay
26:48Well, she can be called Aura
26:50I was too busy talking to you
26:54I'm so sorry
26:55It was my fault
26:56It really distracted you
26:57I'm not blaming you
26:58Oh, I couldn't believe it
27:00I honestly thought I'd done it right
27:02A-U-R-A
27:04And then I was sitting back going
27:05That's not Aura
27:06You're going to change your name
27:09Just for the sake of the bowl
27:11Just changing the name
27:12Oh, my God
27:12Are you kidding me?
27:13Have I spelt this wrong?
27:15You have
27:15I just got caught up in the moment
27:17Do you know what?
27:18It was just so relaxing and things
27:21I just, yeah
27:23You just forgot what you're doing
27:24I just, yeah, I don't know, yeah
27:25I can't, yeah, whatever
27:27It was just nice
27:29Would it be possible to get these wrapped
27:31And we can get them fired when we get home?
27:33Of course, I'll wrap them up for you
27:34Is that okay?
27:34Yeah, absolutely
27:35Thank you
27:35Thank you
27:36Hang on, who won the competition then?
27:39I don't think my design was brilliant
27:41But, you know, anyone can do it
27:42No, but it was nice
27:43You know, I'm definitely the more artistic one
27:45Yeah
27:46Well, mines wouldn't look out at the place
27:48And I'm not sure
27:49Thank you
27:51Take care
27:52I doubt you'll be in the doghouse with the pups, James
27:55Back at the wooden shoe workshop
28:00Put your block of wood at the end of your knife
28:04So you have more power to cut into it
28:06And we'll see that it's turning into a wooden shoe
28:10Jackie and Tamara's traditional Dutch clogs
28:13Haven't exactly taken shape yet
28:15With a little imagination
28:19It's giving similarities somehow
28:21It's giving something
28:22You have to have patience to get a nice wooden shoe
28:26It takes around four hours to take a pair
28:28I think we would not have achieved a wooden shoe in a week
28:32Well, your ship's leaving in just a few hours
28:35So better get your skates on
28:36Marco and a little modern technology come to the rescue
28:41I'm not going to lie and say I'm going to take up
28:44Wooden shoemaking in the future
28:46I don't see it for me
28:47But it was very fun to learn from him
28:50Because he's someone so passionate about wooden shoemaking
28:53And someone who really does know what they're doing
28:55And know their craft really well
28:57With their blocks shaped
28:59The ladies make their finishing cuts
29:01Are you still going?
29:03I mean, I think I'm about time
29:05It's up to the master to decide who is his best apprentice
29:09So, ladies, let's take a look at your clocks
29:12Yep
29:13Looks good
29:14Have a look at this one
29:16They're beautifully made
29:18Especially for the first attempt
29:20You can stay here
29:23Oh, wow
29:23You as well
29:25Thank you, Marco
29:25You're welcome
29:26Thank you so much
29:28The final step is a bit of personalisation
29:32My penmanship might be slightly better than yours
29:37You know that's Jackie
29:39Yes, but there's also
29:40There's no two ways about that
29:41We were given a hot pen
29:44To write our names in on our clogs
29:48Are you done?
29:49I'm done
29:49Okay
29:50Turn that around
29:51Well, I think I'm done then
29:53Perfect pair of clogs
29:55Your artistic flair shone through
29:59I don't know if it was an artistic flair
30:02But it was just fun to do something different
30:04It was less taxing than the shaving
30:07I can still feel the shaving
30:09In downtown Amsterdam, the boys have got a waft of something
30:18It's a Dutch waffle shop
30:20And is Amsterdam famous for waffles?
30:23I like the smell of this place
30:24So I think we should go in
30:25Have a look
30:25This smell was unbelievable
30:29This was so sweet
30:30It immediately made my mouth water
30:34It was
30:35It kind of drew me straight in
30:37Because I've got a real sweet tooth
30:37He's got a massive sweet tooth
30:38Massive sweet tooth
30:39Oh, I tell you
30:42The smell is amazing
30:44Welcome to Melis 12 Waffles
30:46Oh, thank you
30:47We've just been walking over in Amsterdam
30:48And we've just stumbled across this
30:50Yeah, well, this is the famous Dutch stroopwafels
30:52We make them here fresh all day
30:54Oh, wow
30:55The world-famous stroopwafel
30:58Is thought to have been first baked in the city of Gouda
31:01In the 1800s
31:02These caramel-filled delights are perfectly shaped
31:06To sit on top of your cuppa
31:07To melt the gooey center
31:09And before the boys taste some of these waffly treats
31:12If you're interested
31:14We can go downstairs
31:16And we can show you how we make it
31:18Oh, that would be nice
31:19Oh, I'd love that
31:19Would you like to see that?
31:20Yeah, we'd love that, yes
31:21You don't often get invited in
31:22You know, if you're going to a shop
31:24At home
31:24You won't get invited in
31:26To see how they make their products
31:28Or to see what goes on behind the scenes
31:30And it was nice to learn something like that
31:32It felt like we were doing
31:33A little waffle-making workshop
31:34So, you have a stroopwafel
31:41Stroop is the name for the caramel
31:42And the waffle is the biscuit
31:44Okay
31:44We put the dough in
31:46Close it and bake it
31:50And the yeast lets it rise
31:52And it creates air in the middle
31:53And that's good
31:55Because we're going to cut the stroopwafel in half
31:56Right
31:57Put the stroopwafel or the caramel
31:59And put it back together
32:00Okay
32:00And so it's traditional
32:02Just to have the waffle with the caramel
32:06Yes
32:06That's been for 200 years
32:09Nowadays it's a bit more popular
32:12To add more toppings
32:13I think a few mouths are watering
32:16You've done that before
32:19The smell is just
32:20It's not my first
32:21No
32:22So, here's the stroop
32:24Yep
32:24Smells getting even sweeter
32:27Mm-hmm
32:27Put the top on
32:29Yeah
32:29And there you have your original apple
32:30Yes
32:31Oh, it smells amazing
32:33No, thank you
32:34There you go
32:35That's yours
32:36Oh, thank you
32:37Enjoy
32:37Still warm
32:38And one for you
32:39Lovely, thank you
32:40Enjoy, guys
32:41Oh, thank you
32:42That should satisfy your sweet tooth, Damien
32:45Back on board Ambience
32:49In the ship's atrium lounge
32:50Jackie and Tamara are taking stock
32:53After their cheese and clog making excursion
32:55So, what was your fun part of today?
32:59Smoked goat's cheese
33:01Yeah, that's a new favourite for you
33:03That's a new favourite for me
33:04I'll be trying to acquire it
33:05When we're back in the UK for you
33:07I think I really enjoyed Marco as a person
33:11I enjoyed him visiting his wooden shoe business
33:14I don't know if I'll ever make another clogging
33:18My life again
33:20But there's still hope
33:21Well, at least you have a pair between you
33:25It's been a very good day
33:28Yeah
33:28I've enjoyed it
33:29It's been a good day
33:30Still in central Amsterdam
33:34The boys are in the iconic Dam Square
33:37Named after the dam built on the river Amstel
33:40Where the city was founded
33:41Let's just try one
33:44What do you mean try one?
33:47Well, just try one
33:47You can
33:49We can save the other one for later
33:50I'll eat half of yours
33:52And then eat all of mine
33:53They're about to get their first taste
33:57Of its most famous cookie
33:58You smell it
34:00It smells lovely
34:02It smells
34:03Is it waffly good?
34:05Let's try some of that
34:06That's really nice and gooey
34:08Oh, it's lovely
34:09That's really one of the nicest things I've ever tried
34:13Really nice
34:13We haven't got much time left in Amsterdam, really
34:18So I think we're going to need to head down to the ship soon
34:20Right
34:21Shall we have a walk round
34:23And see if there's some shops
34:24Come on, then
34:26James and Damien still need souvenirs
34:31They've got all the traditional stuff
34:33The tulips
34:34The clogs
34:35It says do not touch the slip
34:36For their other four spaniels back home
34:40These are nice
34:42You think we'll find something in here for the dogs?
34:46Well, no, I've found something for my garden
34:47Yeah, we're not
34:48The tulip dogs
34:48Oh, Damien
34:50Do you want some clog slippers?
34:53Well, they would dabble up as dog toys
34:55Because they do run off with my slippers
34:57This is the Delaf porcelain
34:59Looks like the boys have found some doggy Delft
35:02They've got a Dachshund
35:03They've got a Dachshund?
35:04Oh, I bet there's no
35:05They've got a built area
35:06Oh, there's a Spaniel, is it?
35:09Is that a Spaniel?
35:10Definitely looks like a Spaniel
35:12That is definitely a Spaniel
35:13Right, let's get one of them
35:14Think they're more for the dog owners
35:16Hi
35:18Get a wriggle on, boys
35:20The ship will be sailing soon
35:22It's been a fabulous first day on land
35:40For our adventurous cruisers
35:42Mum Jackie and daughter Tamara
35:45Have had a real taste of old Amsterdam
35:47If you go on like that
35:49You're going to end up with a toothpick
35:51Whilst partners, James and Damien
35:57Lapped up the culture of the charming Dutch capital
35:59Cheers to us, like a nice holiday
36:02After a busy day
36:06Ambience is leaving the port of Amsterdam
36:09And heading off to her next destination, Lisbon
36:12And our ladies are relaxing in the bar
36:15That's great
36:16Thank you
36:17James and Damien have settled in
36:19And are back on board
36:20But there's still one pressing thing left to do
