Quinn Ewers was named QB2 for Miami on Sunday but the battle for the backup QB is apparently a week to week decision.

00:00Mike McDaniel has his Monday press conference that's just happened.
00:04David Fironas in the Sun Sentinel tweets out, Mike McDaniel told reporters
00:10in Miami Gardens, Tua Tonga-Vailoa remains the starting quarterback
00:15for the team.
00:18So that change isn't going to happen.
00:20And by the way, if your boss and your owner preach patience
00:25and stand by you, who would you be to not preach patience
00:32and stand by your man, Tua Tonga-Vailoa?
00:36But this is a terrible cycle to be in.
00:38I was going to say, Hulk.
00:40But it is what it is.
00:43So nothing.
00:44So just get your ass kicked over and over.
00:47Everything stays the same.
00:49No adjustments, no anything.
00:50Well, that seems to be the plan.
00:52Man, I'm not down with it, but that seems to be the plan.
00:56No matter how far it sinks, nothing is changing.
01:02Because don't tell me that some cursory change on the offensive line
01:08or, you know what I mean?
01:09Like, don't tell me some cursory change is going to be the big change.
01:14You know, oh, Ollie Gordon's inactive.
01:17That's how, you know, it's like, all right, give me some meat and potatoes.
01:21Like, don't throw me a little corn niblet special on the side
01:26and tell me that that's the big change to the menu.
01:29Here's just a couple other notes from David Fioranis.
01:32Mike McDaniel said, we need to fix things and fast.
01:37Everyone, including myself, especially me.
01:40Quinn Ewers had mentioned as the backup quarterback being week-to-week
01:47between him and Zach Wilson.
01:49Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said the same moments ago.
01:52This is now a week-to-week competition between Zach Wilson and Quinn Ewers
01:57to be the backup.
01:59And Mike McDaniel, David Fioranis tweets,
02:03said his conversation with Dolphins owner Stephen Ross
02:06had to do with the game itself.
02:09So if you think they had some sort of grand conversation
02:14about coaching and ideas and where the organization is headed,
02:23that doesn't seem to be the case.
02:25It seems like they had a small conversation about the game itself.
02:31It wasn't small.
02:32I just, based on somebody I talked to who was there,
02:36Stephen Ross was in that coach's locker room after the game
02:40for a lot longer than he normally is.
02:44A lot, lot longer.
02:45That was a conversation after the game.
02:47But I wonder what that means.
02:48Is he normally in there for five minutes?
02:50Right.
02:50I don't know.
02:50The cursory visit, and then it's 15 minutes,
02:52which however long it was in there,
02:54I don't think it was enough time to solve anything.
02:57Maybe he had bad guts.
02:59That's why he was calling those plays.
03:00He was trying to get it over with.
03:01Or he didn't want to see anyone else.
03:03He's like, hey, coach, I'm going to hang out in here for a while
03:05because I don't want to see anybody.
03:07With that Quinn Ewers thing, I'm 42.
03:11I've been playing.
03:12I played football since I was nine, watching it now for, what, 30-plus years.
03:17Solana, you're, what, 20-plus years of football.
03:20Hawk, 72 years you've been watching football.
03:22You're going to do this again?
03:23You're going to do this all day long?
03:24But, no, I'm just messing around.
03:26You're on thin ice, buddy.
03:27When is the last time, at any level, you're evaluating in week seven
03:33who the backup quarterback is on your team?
03:35That's crazy, right?
03:36And I identified that as such a big problem last season,
03:39which they knew was a problem last season.
03:41And now they're seven weeks in.
03:43And, again, this doesn't mean spit.
03:46But they're seven weeks in, like you said,
03:48and they don't know who their better backup quarterback is?
03:51If it's Zach, if it's Quinn, we're in the worst situation even with Tua
03:56throwing four interceptions, three interceptions, sorry.
03:59But it just kind of adds to the narrative of the dysfunction in Miami.
04:04Tua with the player-only meetings,
04:06McDaniel with the people-missing meetings last season.
04:08And now just think about, you talk about embarrassing Ross.
04:12Think about the other teams.
04:13They're sitting there listening to this too.
04:15Oh, the Dolphins don't know who's better between Zach and Quinn right now?
04:19Yo, this is crazy talk, man.
04:22Talk about dysfunction.
04:24This is crazy talk.
04:26There is no way I've ever been on a team where I don't know who's –
04:30if Chris Leak got hurt, I knew who was going in.
04:32If Cleo Lemon got hurt, I knew who was going in.
04:35Oh, Tua's out?
04:37Is it Quinn or is it Zach?
04:38That's crazy to be on a team with that dysfunction.
04:42I got to call it what it is.
04:43I think there's way better examples of dysfunction than this
04:46only because – isn't this what you do with a seventh-round pick?
04:50You draft him, you take a flyer on him,
04:52and you hope that, hey, he comes in and he proves something to you.
04:56He impresses you.
04:57And Crowder, maybe over the past couple weeks,
04:59he's shown you he's matured in practice reps,
05:02and he's shown you that he's actually good enough to be,
05:05at this very moment, the backup quarterback.
05:07But then you don't do a big thing about how we identified Zach Wilson
05:11as the guy who we want to back up to.
05:15Like, this is, to me, smacks of the offensive line conversation.
05:19Oh, you guys are more worried about it than we are, and it was terrible.
05:22You made a big show of we hand-picked Zach Wilson
05:28because they watched what happened when Tim Boyle and Tyler Huntley came in.
05:32We hand-picked Zach Wilson, and now you're saying,
05:36well, we probably didn't need to do that because Quinn Ewers is just as good
05:40or maybe Zach Wilson is just as bad.
05:43I'm with you.
05:43I'm not saying that this is a shining light on Mike McDaniel
05:48and that this is a silver lining.
05:50I'm just telling you, Zach Wilson was coming in as a reclamation project,
05:55and maybe they thought, hey, there could be shades of a Baker Mayfield.
05:59There could be shades of numerous examples around the NFL.
06:04Maybe that's what they thought, and now six weeks in,
06:06they're looking at a quarterback who, you know what, probably just isn't that good,
06:10and why not give the guy that we drafted the opportunity over him
06:14considering the circumstances of you're entering that game 1-5, Crowder.
06:19Like, the point of Zach Wilson was, hey, you're battling for a playoff position.
06:25Tua's out for a game because his rib gets hurt
06:27or he breaks his finger on his throwing hand.
06:30You need your quarterback, your backup to come in.
06:32Zach Wilson won game and won you that game.
06:35But at this point in the season, Zach Wilson doesn't matter.
06:39You don't want him to come in and do anything.
06:41You'd rather go to the young guy that you drafted and give him the reps.
06:45But no, no, no, no.
06:46If you say that, I'm with you.
06:48It was presented as it's week to week for them to figure out
06:53who gives them a best chance of scoring a touchdown on a given possession.
06:57What the hell were they doing in camp?
07:00What the hell were they doing in OTAs?
07:02He got drafted in what?
07:03When was the draft?
07:04May?
07:05June?
07:05July?
07:06In August?
07:08You still don't know who gives your team a better chance to score a touchdown
07:11or get in field goal range?
07:13It sounds crazy.
07:15And to be honest, what quarterback?
07:17Because somebody last week was Dylan Gabriel.
07:19One of those guys have to be the scout team guy.
07:21You're watching him run a scout team card?
07:24Oh, man, he threw that Browns route real nice.
07:27He might be better than Zach Wilson.
07:28I see what you're saying with what does it help your team to put Zach Wilson?
07:33I understand your narrative.
07:34Let the young guy get some burns.
07:36See if he can play at this level.
07:37I fully understand you.
07:38From the organizational standpoint, how do you not know who you're going to put in
07:42if Tua – I don't even want to put injury on him.
07:46If Tua tears his foot, his shoe breaks, and he has to miss a snap.
07:49No, he just keeps playing the way that he's playing.
07:51Then you're going to – I mean, you're going to have to make a move.
07:54Think about that.
07:55Blitz.
07:56Boom.
07:57Tua's down.
07:57He's holding his ribs.
07:58Hey, who's going in?
08:00Zach or Quinn?
08:01What are you talking about?
08:05You don't know your backup quarterback.
08:07That's – I've never heard of this in my life.
08:09I didn't even hear him say this dumb stuff today.
08:11It sounds crazy.
08:12I don't know your backup quarterback.
08:14I don't know your backup quarterback.
08:15I don't know your backup quarterback.
08:17I don't know your backup quarterback.
08:18I don't know your backup quarterback.
08:19I don't know your backup quarterback.
08:20I don't know your backup quarterback.
08:21I don't know your backup quarterback.
08:22I don't know your backup quarterback.
08:23I don't know your backup quarterback.
08:24I don't know your backup quarterback.
08:25I don't know your backup quarterback.
08:26I don't know your backup quarterback.
08:27I don't know your backup quarterback.
08:28I don't know your backup quarterback.
08:29I don't know your backup quarterback.
08:30I don't know your backup quarterback.
08:31I don't know your backup quarterback.
08:32I don't know your backup quarterback.
08:33I don't know your backup quarterback.
