Hoch and Crowder discuss their satisfaction with Zach Wilson's performance vs Chicago.

00:00From Joe Shad in the Palm Beach Post, a little stock up, stock down when it comes to the
00:06Dolphins after the game yesterday.
00:08See if you agree or disagree.
00:10He's got Ollie Gordon, stock up.
00:13Gordon, a rookie, had a 21-yard rush, scored his first NFL preseason touchdown and converted
00:20on a fourth down in the fourth quarter.
00:23Meanwhile, Jalen Wright and Alexander Madison totaled 12 carries for 24 yards.
00:30You know I'm in agreement with Joe Shad there because I think Ollie Gordon's better than
00:33Derrick Henry.
00:34Do you agree?
00:36Yes, and he's big and he's built for physical style of football.
00:41So if you want to go that way, he's made for it.
00:44And that's what it is.
00:46Wright's not made for it.
00:47A-Chan is the size of my son.
00:49My son's 13.
00:50But if you want to be powerful, I think Ollie Gordon is the way to go.
00:54And Solana, you had disagreed with Appel, I think, over the course of a couple weeks
00:59of training camp about Madison versus Ollie Gordon.
01:02Madison, obviously, is going to be injured for the season.
01:04But you had to be impressed with what you saw yesterday, no?
01:07Yeah, no, no.
01:07And it wasn't that I didn't like Ollie Gordon.
01:10I just, you know, he's a rookie.
01:11And I know Alexander Madison, at the very least, with just somebody you can rely on to get you
01:16a couple yards.
01:17As we saw, as evidenced yesterday, first touchdown, finally punched it in with Madison.
01:22It's a shame that he's going to be out.
01:24But the Dolphins actually signed a running back over the past, like, hour.
01:28I don't know if you guys saw, but a running back named Aaron Shampglin, per Mike Garofalo,
01:34appeared in three games at the Steelers last year, worked out for the Bears and Jets, worked
01:38out in Miami today, and he landed a deal.
01:41All right.
01:42Don't they have a lot of running backs, though?
01:46Not really.
01:47I mean, you've got H-Anne, and you've got Wright.
01:50Wright's not going anywhere.
01:51I know, you know, I know people weren't thrilled with what they saw in the opening
01:55drive there at the end, but Wright's not going anywhere.
01:59You've got Ollie Gordon.
02:01You've got Alec Ingold is going to be back at some point.
02:05He's your fullback.
02:06I don't know.
02:08Well, I mean, they need a fourth running back.
02:12I got you.
02:13And to be honest, I try to look at his name, Champlin.
02:16I don't even know how to spell it, but they don't want to put – they don't want to
02:20wear the tires down on A-Chan, Wright, and Ollie Gordon in the preseason.
02:24Bring somebody in and see if he can impress you.
02:26If not, then head on back home, big fella.
02:29Stock up from Joe Shad in the Palm Beach Post.
02:36Edge, Grayson Murphy, and linebacker Willie Gay.
02:41Murphy and Gay have had really nice training camps, and they picked up where they left
02:45off in the preseason opener.
02:47Murphy had a sack, and Gay had a half sack.
02:50Derek McClendon also had a sack for the Dolphins.
02:53Pass rush will not be Miami's problem.
02:56So, yeah, Willie Gay can go.
03:00We've had a lot of people praise Willie Gay Jr., and I'm like, come on now.
03:05Like, I haven't heard of him.
03:07He can play ball.
03:08He can run.
03:09That's what they need.
03:09He's very athletic, and I like them to have a guy in the middle that can move that way.
03:17Looks better than Channing Tindall.
03:19I'll tell you that much.
03:20Willie Gay looks a lot better than Channing Tindall, and he just has stupid speed.
03:24Him and Jordan Phillips is another guy who were, like, just making plays yesterday as well.
03:31Bro, the front seven is, like, we talk about lack of depth.
03:36It's not there.
03:37You've got a whole lot of people there.
03:38You kind of feel excited about it.
03:39Like, you kind of feel like they're going to be able to put some pressure.
03:42Dotson, Brooks, Willie Gay on the second level, first level.
03:46We know we're loading the first level.
03:47They drafted Grant.
03:48He doesn't even start.
03:49Just signed Seeler.
03:50You got Chubb.
03:53You have Jalen Phillips.
03:55You have Big Chop Robbins.
03:57Like, the front seven is the strength of the defense by far, even having a Pro Bowl safety.
04:02But we're going to have to get the ball out of the quarterback's hands as fast as possible.
04:07Stock up.
04:08Storm Duck and Jack Jones.
04:11Dolphins say they have confidence in their cornerbacks, and Duck and Jones looked pretty good in the opener.
04:17Duck is a sound tackler and positions himself well on the field.
04:22Jones is a dynamic athlete who appeared poised to make big plays.
04:26Ethan Bonner has come on over the last seven days, too, says Joe Shad, much to Solana's chagrin.
04:34Yeah.
04:35No, Storm Duck's good.
04:37Ethan Bonner made a play where he actually deflected a pass in the third or fourth quarter.
04:41Second half, for sure.
04:41And I forget who intercepted it, and Goldie and Bo were just praising the play by Ethan Bonner.
04:50Like, just non-stop.
04:51I'm like, oh, not again.
04:53Don't do this to me again.
04:54But, I mean, it was.
04:55It was a nice play.
04:56Oh, it was a great play.
04:57Yeah, great play.
04:59Relatability.
05:00Jason Sehorne.
05:06Stock up.
05:07Jason Sanders.
05:08Sanders drilled a 56-yarder.
05:09He keeps getting better and better from distance.
05:12Stock down.
05:14Quinn Ewers and Zach Wilson.
05:18Joe Shad says it can be difficult to evaluate backup quarterbacks in preseason.
05:22They're typically not playing with starters.
05:24They may be put into difficult spots, especially with backup offensive linemen.
05:29But the preseason numbers for Ewers and Wilson were not pretty.
05:32Ewers, 5-for-18, 2 sacks, 2 fumbles.
05:37And Wilson, 5-for-9 with 4 sacks.
05:41You said it earlier, Hawk.
05:43Ewers, I'm going to give him a call pass because it was his first NFL experience.
05:49Yeah.
05:50He looked terrible.
05:52Those 13 incompletions.
05:53He looked, in my opinion, like a seventh-round draft pick who was drafted just a few months
06:02earlier should look in their first-ever NFL action.
06:08That's how he looked.
06:09Yes.
06:11But there was a throw to his left that hit a fan in the third row.
06:20And I was like, ooh, that's not how that ball is supposed to look.
06:24No, he got rid of it.
06:25He got rid of it, Connor.
06:26Goldie said on that play, smart heads-up play by throwing the ball away.
06:33He did.
06:33Throwing the ball away?
06:35You have to throw it into the second deck.
06:38Throw it in, hit it, you know, throw it to the sideline, throw it in the dirt.
06:42I think, Quinn, I just expected, because Quinn was on, he was on the damn cover of NCAA.
06:48And I'm like, okay, I was excited about it this summer.
06:50And now I watched him and I was like, oh, okay, yeah.
06:53Come on, Zach.
06:53Let's go.
06:54We got a backup quarterback in Zach.
06:56To be fair, I don't know if we've got a backup quarterback.
06:59And, Zach, for the past two months, you guys both have been very, very worrisome about or worried about Zach Wilson.
07:09Like, very worried about Zach Wilson.
07:11And I've kind of been like, ah, whatever.
07:12It's not a big deal.
07:13Who cares?
07:14After what I saw yesterday, sign me up.
07:17I'm worried as hell.
07:18If two estimates are drive.
07:21I had the opposite reaction.
07:23I did.
07:24Not that I thought he lit it up.
07:26But I saw enough where I was, I think Crowder said it, like, he kind of looks like he is where he should be right now, which is a backup.
07:33He, I said this stat earlier.
07:35He's played in 34 games in his NFL career.
07:38He started 33 of them.
07:40So, he's got experience as a starter.
07:42He's not going to get rattled.
07:44I know.
07:44I saw the throw to Tanner.
07:46Like, I know.
07:47He had a touchdown pass that he one-hopped.
07:51I know.
07:51And it wasn't his first pass.
07:53Because if it was his first pass, I'm not telling you that I watched him and I was like, oh, I was wrong.
07:59But he looked slightly more composed than I thought he was going to.
08:05And there were a couple of passes that were dimes.
08:08What's the bar, though?
08:10Like, when you say slightly more composed than you thought, what was the bar?
08:13Like, him literally just pooping himself.
08:16The bar is Skylar Thompson and Tim Boyle.
08:19Like, the bar is low.
08:20But they set the bar low themselves.
08:22Was the bar literally him going out there and just pooping his pants?
08:26Because, yes, hockey.
08:27But what did you expect your backup quarterback to look like?
08:31I expected somebody to come in.
08:33Somebody that they signed, paid some money for.
08:36That they went out and got hand-selected, by the way, to be the backup.
08:40To look composed.
08:41Go for two touchdowns, no?
08:42To look composed in the offense.
08:44Guys, there was a play on third down and short.
08:47He threw it to the other team on an out route that was such a bad throw.
08:52It could have been, perhaps, the worst throw I've ever seen in the National Football League.
08:57That was, of course, until Quinn Ewers came in and threw it.
09:00In other words, you expected only great things from your backup quarterback and didn't expect any mistakes?
09:07No, it's not great things.
09:08I just expected him, and I take it all with a grain of salt.
09:11I truthfully do.
09:13I'm overreacting because the offensive linemen who were blocking for Quinn Ewers and for Zach Wilson in that second half, those guys aren't NFL players.
09:22They're just not.
09:23So I understand that.
09:24That's a component to it.
09:25But, man, Zach didn't look comfortable in the offense, in my opinion.
09:30He didn't look composed.
09:31That first drive, he looked decent.
09:33But, really, the Dolphins ran the football very well.
09:35There was no point where he stepped up in the pocket, showed elusiveness, made great plays.
09:41Like, there was never any of that.
09:43It was just, like, checkdowns, short checkdowns, and passively moving the ball.
09:48No, but, Solana, that's what I said earlier, where, like, you're not going to see him drop back, step up, slide to his right, deliver a cross, you know, a crosser on the backside.
09:59He's not that.
10:00That's what starters do.
10:01Zach Wilson is a backup that's going to come in, run the ball, have some play-action rollouts on third down, and just hold the game down.
10:11Tim Boyle, Tyler Huntley, those boys, Skylar Thompson, they couldn't even hold the game down.
10:18I'm comfortable with Zach holding a game down long enough to get to 21 points over those other guys that we've seen.
10:26So I might have set the bar low in my mind.
10:28You're comfortable with Zach Wilson to hold the game down after yesterday's performance?
10:34No, but I'm not forlorn at what I saw.
10:38Okay.
10:38You know what I mean?
10:39Like, I still would have rather had Josh Dobbs, but I didn't watch yesterday and go, oh, my God, they Tim Boyle'd us again.
10:48And that's how I thought I was going to feel.
10:50What if I propose a trade?
10:54Okay.
10:55Quinn Ewers, Zach Wilson, to the Steelers for Skylar Thompson straight up.
11:03In a heartbeat.
11:03Did you see him yesterday?
11:05The guy is, that guy's a starter who just hasn't been given the right chance.
11:10I'm going to stab you in the neck.
11:11We saw what happened when he went in the game.
11:13We saw what happened when he went in the game.
