00:00the geopolitics of south asia is a constantly shifting landscape influenced by deep historical
00:04wounds unresolved borders cross-border militancy and the aspirations of regional powers at the
00:11heart of this triangle lies the relationship between india pakistan and afghanistan for decades
00:17afghanistan was considered pakistan's strategic backyard a nation whose policies were to be
00:23influenced if not dictated by islamabad yet as history has often shown allies can quickly turn
00:29into adversaries today pakistan finds itself in an uncomfortable position its once reliable
00:36partners in kabul the taliban are asserting independence challenging islamabad's control
00:41and even directly confronting it militarily this rift between pakistan and afghanistan is deepening
00:47at a time when pakistan faces political economic and security crises at home meanwhile india historically
00:54cautious in its engagement with afghanistan sees an opening to reassert influence the taliban foreign
01:01minister's visit to india underscores this changing dynamic and offers new delhi a chance to recalibrate
01:07its strategy this 3500 word analysis will explore the multi-layered tensions between pakistan and
01:14afghanistan the security and political challenges facing islamabad the strategic outreach of the

02:10the relationship between afghanistan and pakistan has never been simple since pakistan's creation in 1947
02:17afghanistan has refused to recognize the durand line the 2670 kilometers border imposed by the british
02:24in 1893. unlike many borders in south asia that found eventual acceptance the durand line remained contentious
02:32for successive afghan governments including monarchies republics communist regimes and the taliban's earlier
02:38rule in the 1990s this line symbolized colonial injustice pakistan however treats it as an international boundary
02:46to secure it islamabad began fencing the durand line after 2001 completing most of it by 2022
02:54the taliban much like their predecessors reject the legitimacy of this border considering it an
03:00artificial line that divides pashtun tribes and families as a result clashes between afghan taliban
03:06forces and pakistani security personnel have become increasingly frequent mortar fire small arms
03:12skirmishes and cross-border raids are no longer exceptional incidents they represent a recurring
03:18pattern of hostility this dispute is more than just a border issue it is a question of sovereignty
03:24legitimacy and national identity for pakistan the durand line is about securing its frontier
03:31for the taliban it is about asserting afghan independence even if that comes at the cost of
03:36alienating islamabad while the durand line dispute reflects a clash of national interests
03:54the tariki taliban pakistan ttp problem highlights the most immediate threat to pakistan's internal stability
04:00the ttp emerged in 2007 as an umbrella group of islamist militants inspired by the afghan taliban
04:08but distinct in its leadership and objectives its primary goal has been to wage war against the
04:13pakistani state targeting security forces government officials and civilians over the years the ttp has
04:20carried out devastating attacks suicide bombings in major cities assaults on military bases and even
04:26the infamous 2014 peshawar school massacre that killed over 130 children despite numerous military
04:34operations the ttp has proven resilient regrouping in afghanistan whenever pressure mounted in pakistan
04:41islamabad believed that once the afghan taliban took control in 2021 they would act against the ttp
04:48instead ideological and tribal linkages between the groups prevented decisive action the taliban rulers in
04:54kabul refused to hand over ttp leaders and showed little willingness to dismantle their safe havens
05:00instead the ttp has grown more emboldened launching attacks deep inside pakistan this has created a
05:07security nightmare for islamabad on one hand pakistan's military is overstretched dealing with unrest in
05:14balochistan and tensions with india on the other it's supposed ally in kabul is harboring the very
05:19militants destabilizing its western regions the trust deficit has widened and pakistan finds itself in
05:26an unprecedented position at odds with the taliban it once helped bring to power
05:43another major source of tension is the refugee issue pakistan has hosted millions of afghan refugees
05:49since the soviet invasion of 1979 while many returned home after 2001 an estimated 3.7 million
05:57still remain in pakistan many of them undocumented initially seen as a humanitarian gesture hosting
06:04refugees eventually became a political and social burden in 2023-24 facing economic collapse and mounting
06:12domestic pressure pakistan began mass deportations of afghan refugees families were torn apart children pulled
06:19from schools and livelihoods destroyed overnight thousands were forced to cross the border back into
06:25afghanistan often with little more than the clothes on their backs the taliban government condemned these
06:31expulsions calling them inhumane and politically motivated this move worsened anti-pakistan sentiment among
06:38ordinary afghans while india through humanitarian diplomacy providing scholarships food aid and medical
06:45assistance has positioned itself as a more reliable partner in afghan eyes for kabul islamabad now appears
06:53as a coercive neighbor while india emerges as a distant but benevolent alternative
06:57afghanistan's ability to manage external tensions is deeply compromised by its internal crises
07:161. political instability since imran khan's removal and imprisonment pakistan has faced one of its most
07:22unstable political periods the credibility of the civilian leadership is weak and the military though
07:28powerful is increasingly unpopular civil military relations remain tense with allegations of
07:33corruption authoritarianism and suppression of dissent dominating the political discourse 2. economic
07:40collapse pakistan's economy is in freefall inflation is skyrocketing foreign exchange reserves are
07:46critically low and dependence on imf bailouts has created deep resentment energy shortages
07:52rising unemployment and mounting debt have crippled growth and fueled social unrest
07:583. two-front security threat for years pakistan strategists worried about the nightmare of two
08:04hostile borders india in the east and afghanistan in the west that nightmare is now real instead of
08:11gaining strategic depth in afghanistan pakistan faces strategic suffocation the combined effect of these
08:17crises has eroded pakistan's ability to project influence abroad its leverage
08:22over kabul is weaker than ever before we move forward please like share and subscribe strategic vanguard

08:58amid this backdrop the taliban's pragmatic outreach to india becomes especially significant the taliban foreign
09:04minister's visit to new delhi is more than symbolic it signals kabul's willingness to diversify its diplomatic
09:10engagements beyond pakistan and china the taliban want three things recognition trade and aid while
09:18full diplomatic recognition may still be far off india has extended humanitarian support food supplies
09:25medical aid and scholarships for afghan students the taliban aware of india's historic goodwill among
09:31afghans see value in engaging new delhi for india this outreach provides multiple strategic advantages
09:38counter-terrorism ensuring afghan soil is not used by groups like jayshi muhammad or lashgari taiba
09:44regional connectivity using afghanistan as a transit to access central asia and energy routes soft power
09:51building goodwill through education healthcare and humanitarian programs strategic balancing
09:57preventing pakistan and china from monopolizing influence in afghanistan
10:11the rift between pakistan and afghanistan is advantageous to india in several ways
10:17one collapse of pakistan's strategic depth islamabad's dream of controlling kabul as a backyard for influence
10:23against india has collapsed instead afghanistan is asserting independence
10:29to reduce terrorist threats by engaging directly with the taliban india reduces the risk of afghan
10:35territory being used against its interests three regional leverage india becomes a balancing power
10:41countering both pakistan's covert influence and china's economic ambitions number four enhanced soft power
10:48india's goodwill projects build genuine friendships with ordinary afghans contrasting with pakistan's
10:54coercion
11:06despite these opportunities india must tread cautiously
11:09taliban factionalism not all taliban factions are friendly some remain closely tied to pakistan and
11:16extremist networks china's growing role beijing's investments in afghan mining and infrastructure
11:22could overshadow india's cautious engagement western hesitancy engaging too closely with the taliban
11:28could draw criticism from western allies security risks without clear guarantees afghan soil could still be used
11:35by terror groups
11:48one prolonged tensions between kabul and islamabad this benefits india most as pakistan's influence continues
11:54to erode two china's dominance in afghanistan india risks being sidelined if it does not scale its
12:01engagement three taliban pragmatism if kabul continues balancing ties with multiple powers india could
12:07emerge as a long-term partner pakistan's relationship with afghanistan is unraveling the durand line
12:14dispute ttp sanctuaries and refugee expulsions have soured ties to unprecedented levels pakistan once the
12:21taliban's closest ally is now seen as a coercive and untrustworthy neighbor at the same time the taliban's
12:28outreach to india signals a new phase in south asian geopolitics for india this is not merely an
12:34opportunity but a historic opening by blending hard security interests with soft power diplomacy new
12:40delhi can reshape its western frontier strategy afghanistan once a challenge could become a partner not in
12:47formal recognition but in pragmatic cooperation as pakistan weakens under domestic and external pressures
12:54india's challenge is clear engage cautiously but strategically ensuring that the shifting sands of
12:59south asia tilt in its favor this moment if seized wisely could redefine the balance of power in the region
