The "railroad signal-man ghost story" is
"The Signal-Man", a short story by Charles Dickens about a signalman haunted by a ghostly apparition that appears before tragic railway accidents. The signalman sees a ghost by the tunnel who warns him by gesticulating and saying "Halloa! Below!" He tries to avert disasters based on these visions, but they are always preceded by similar, horrifying events. In the end, the signalman dies in a train crash, and the narrator realizes the ghost's final warning was for the signalman himself
