In this gripping recount, activist Iylia Balqis Suhaimi shares the moment her humanitarian flotilla was intercepted by the Israeli army, just 16 nautical miles from Gaza.

She describes how, in a split second, a blinding spotlight from a military speedboat lit up their vessel.

Iylia and 28 others were then confined in a cramped space for 16 hours, unable to do much but wait.

00:00They came to our boat and the first sentence, they said like,
00:02Okay, everyone, we are the Israeli army.
00:05We are here to intercept your boat.
00:07We didn't mean any harm.
00:09We just want to check you if you bring any weapon and stuff.
00:12And I was like, oh, wow, that's so smooth and kind.
00:17When we got intercepted, they came with a speedboat,
00:20a very, very bright, with a very, very bright speedlight, light, a spotlight, sorry.
00:27And then they came to our boat, like in a second, in a blink,
00:30they just got to the top deck where we are already ready there to be intercepted.
00:36With our hands up, it's not saying that we are surrendering ourselves.
00:39No, it's to say that we bring peace.
00:42We didn't have any weapon.
00:43And this is not a sign of surrender.
00:45It's actually a sign of victory.
00:47And then they came to our boat and the first sentence, they said like,
00:50Okay, everyone, we are the Israeli army.
00:53We are here to intercept your boat.
00:55We didn't mean any harm.
00:57We just want to check you if you bring any weapon and stuff.
01:00And I was like, oh, wow, that's so smooth and kind.
01:05And then we were in a circle and then they broke all the CCTVs
01:09and all the starlings, they broke everything.
01:11And then we are gathered at one point at the very far behind of our boat.
01:16And then they start to call one by one.
01:18And then they just search if there's any weapon.
01:20And then they just take our passport and just keep for the documentation.
01:24And then they even handed like a sitting pad for Nelson Mandela,
01:32or I call him Chief Mandela.
01:35He offered to sit on a sitting pad.
01:40And it was like, friend, here, take a sitting pad.
01:43And then me and one Turkish woman, we was like, oh, friend, what a way to call Chief.
01:51And then they were having all the cameras on their vets.
01:55So we know it's like a propaganda.
01:57And then they were handing out water, drinking water and stuff.
02:01So we were told not to take the water so that it won't be another media stunt for them.
02:08So, and then they were like, oh, okay, it's going to be very hard to sit on the top deck.
02:14So let's go down.
02:15And then it's more comfortable there.
02:17Oh, wow.
02:18And I was like, mashallah, it's very...
02:20Because they know we have a lot of people from other nationalities in the boat.
02:25So I'm pretty sure all the steering committee would even shop to see how they treat us.
02:30And then we were sitting in the deck with all the 29 of us were packed in one space.
02:38And then we had to sleep there.
02:40And then because there's nothing to do, because if you...
02:42It's a 16-hour journey from the place we got intercepted,
02:45which is 16 nautical miles from Gaza.
02:48And then it took 16 hours to go to the port.
02:52So when we...
02:53So during the time we just sit and then some of us were talking,
02:57but I was just sleeping because there's nothing else to do.
03:00And then we can go to the toilet, we can go to smoke.
03:03Not me lah, they went to smoke.
03:05And then we can pray outside.
03:07So because what we saw is they are new army.
03:11They are not the elite army.
03:13So we can see like they are not well trained enough.
03:17Probably they were sent to intercept us.
03:20And then when we reached to the port, we had to wait.
03:24We reached...
03:25We were gotten intercepted at 8pm.
03:29And we arrived at the port around 9.30pm.
03:33We were sitting at the ground outside the immigration port.
03:38So there we...
03:40They hold us for about 3 hours.
03:42No, no, no.
03:433, 4 hours I think.
03:44Because I've...
03:459 and then at 1pm we had to move into the immigration post.
03:50So we're going to be...
