00:09interstate uh yes we call it the highway but the highway get in the car so an hour and 25 minutes
00:17yes to get from foxborough massachusetts to boston not even boston this is this boston no
00:23brighton is brighton is boston okay well it's not like the hat of the city
00:28you're still 20 minutes you're still like 15 minutes outside i mean and it's not even raining
00:34like it's double time when it's raining it's double time is there an accident there had to be no just
00:38the traffic is crazy bad so i apologize don't find me please no fines no what did bill used to do
00:45wiggy was talking about five would he fine for being late or would he just release i think i got
00:49fine like five grand one year for being two pounds two pounds overweight and listen this was at the
00:59end of my career and i was never overweight ever i was 260 on the dot from the time i walked in the
01:05building to the end of my career this one particular day i happened to walk in and i might have had a
01:11breakfast sandwich and i might have ate something i got on the scale and i looked at ted and i said
01:16ted it's 262 am i good he goes you're good because usually if i get on the scale like i'm not i'll go
01:23jump in the sauna i'll go sweat it out i'll get two pounds off me i won't eat breakfast right in my case
01:27i go to the ladies room accidentally at a concert oh yeah yeah oh yeah that's bad so anyway i i just
01:33don't think anything about it i just go on my day a couple days later i get a note sitting in my
01:38locker and it was like you've been docked like 5200 wow for being two pounds overweight that was so much
01:45more than when i played i was telling greg it was like 450 per pound when i played it was like
01:50a couple g's oh wow that is nuts and they just they take that right out of the check yeah that's
01:55what that is terrible gonzo yeah well one one year i i barely pushed the quarterback and he like did
02:02the whole like old man falling backwards arms failing flailing and all that and fitzpatrick i got
02:07a flag 15 yards and that was like 15 5 yeah you can't even nope comes right out of your check
02:14but that's not through the pats that's yeah it's really i got i got uniform violations i got five
02:20grand for like socks one time i think they take it out after tax too so it's even do you get paid
02:24once a week every two weeks every so like a normal job yeah yeah every two weeks every monday check
02:29yeah i think monday that's uh yeah i'm sure those checks yeah i would love to see what that looks
02:34like we don't want crazy no iou's when we're gambling on the plane i want my money on wednesday
02:39rob nikovich is brought to you by catches law your attorneys your neighbors and catches is the
02:45official law firm of the new england patriots so visit catches law.com speaking of them
02:51did you imagine that this team would be in first place in the division after week six i didn't think
02:57they'd be in first place but things have worked out in their favor and i would say that if you look
03:02at the league as a whole and the afc in general there's really no big crazy great football teams
03:09right now and the teams that we thought were going to be good are not the ravens are not a good football
03:14team right now um cincinnati you lose a quarterback a lot of injuries a lot of big key guys that are going
03:20down from injuries uh and then teams that you didn't think were going to be good are good so did you
03:25think the colts were going to be a top team in the nfl not at all did you think the pats were going to
03:30be a top team i mean the you know the faithful yeah of course but you know jackson realists yeah
03:36they're like yeah you know they got a you know they got a young quarterback they got a whole new
03:40roster big turnover new coaching staff and they've done a good job so i think it's a combination of
03:46some great play you know you got a good young quarterback who's playing really well right now he's
03:51playing you know phenomenal seeing the field well making right decisions getting the ball down the
03:56field um and then some teams that we thought were going to be good are not good so it's wide open at
04:02this point and i think the crazy part is at this point right now in the season moving forward you
04:09know there are teams that are going to have opportunities to be deep playoff run teams that
04:13we didn't even think we're going to have a chance to sniff it so you know we'll see what happens i think
04:18if they if the pats continue to do like they have the first you know part of the season and they
04:23continue to improve and work on a few things and get better in some areas they're going to be a
04:28a playoff football team that's why i bet on them be uh win the afc the afc championship and then if
04:33you look at the the bills right now they're struggling to figure out what they are right now
04:38like they're they're not really they don't have an identity their identity is josh allen right
04:45their defense is what they can and sean mcdermott said it the other night after the game like we
04:49can't rely on him on his arm only but yet they're doing that right they that's the problem they're
04:55one-dimensional so you you can't be one-dimensional in the nfl you have to have a good running game or
05:01a good play action or a good you know he has just running back yeah uh yeah yeah james cook is
05:06really good he's very good he was like 52 percent of the the plays like no third downs the other night
05:13they're they're not using it but doesn't that set let's maybe that will settle our argument right
05:17so we're arguing with shyme about the offensive coordinator isn't it the offensive coordinator's
05:23job the quarterback coach isn't calling the plays i know that right so the quarterback coach can help
05:30prepare a player for the game plan so you go through the whole week and this is what we're looking for
05:35and this is what we're not going to do and if you see this look we're going to go here if you see a
05:40three by one look and it's open and it's there run it if there's light box run it to the light
05:45box it's a heavy box you would attribute like the uh the phantom hitch that people were talking about
05:49in preseasons and who was talking about a phantom hitch people have talked about this in the
05:55preseason am i an owl beat writers who the beat writers the beat writers the beat writers okay but
06:01no but and also the uh the bad footwork you would attribute helping him fix that to the to the
06:06quarterbacks coach correct i look i mean no offense to plumbers but i look like a plumber if it was up
06:12to the beat writers and i wouldn't have played it down in the nfl so you know it's that sometimes the
06:17beat writers can be wrong and at the end of the day honestly and wiggy knows this because at the end of
06:23the day a coach puts you in a position as a player to make plays if your footwork is a little bit
06:29different but not technically perfect but you still get the job done there was a coach that once told me
06:34done is better than perfect right so i want a player that gets the job done but isn't perfect
06:39because we're all imperfect if you're saying that you think that the team just needs to improve week
06:43after week and you look at the trade deadline do you think that they improve through the trade
06:47deadline or do you think that they improve with the guys that they already have no i mean you're
06:50always looking to grab some talent some more talent at the trade deadline but i think i said it
06:55before there are some positions that are easier to attain that give you more talent versus you grab
07:01somebody that has to learn a deep offense or hey you're the if you just grab a pass rusher
07:08hey pin your ears back go get the quarterback okay i'll learn as the weeks go but my first week here
07:13i can go contribute if you go get a number one receiver like okay yeah you run a run a go route
07:19run an in cut run an over route like but and it's going to take a little time to learn that
07:24uh so i think they're always constantly looking to improve the team through the the deadline but you're
07:30also have to look at the other side of it what are we going to give up for that i don't want to
07:33give up a first or second round pick for somebody that you know potentially is an older veteran right
07:38yeah i mean shyme has been on i'm sure you've heard uh this odd kick for for most of the season
07:44giving zero credit to josh mcdaniels when it comes to i think he's the most important addition
07:49that they've made the most important addition that they've made in this offseason more so than
07:55mike vrabel no i mean obviously vrabel's the head coach but i'm saying you have a head coach
07:59and then you go and you get players and then you go and get a coaching staff he's the most important
08:04piece that they brought in for a young quarterback oh because think about it i don't i would argue
08:10will campbell is more important than josh mcdaniels but i mean will campbell's a great player but
08:14listen at the end of the day oh what were the beat writers talking about his arm length yeah
08:18oh yeah yeah did we ever talk about his arm length short arms i think some people talked
08:25about that i don't have a problem with that matt light doesn't have very long arms i have the
08:29shortest arms of any they had a list of bill belichick starting outside linebackers of his
08:35whole career you know what my arm length is dead last glass 31 inches right yes william mcginnis is
08:44like go go gadget 50 inch arms and i'm dead last right get the job done for all time in sacks
08:50break just has short arms at certain moments of the night yeah when the check comes well well nick
08:56see that's like a like that's a great point that i don't think chime and beat writers understand
09:02right it's about getting the job getting the job done and you might not fit into the prototypical
09:09measurable and footwork and technique but it's about and when you get the job done a large part
09:16of that is your coach putting you in the right position and motivating you right specific way
09:20because some players you have to and now it's changing we talked about this as well some coaches
09:25understand the best ways to motivate a player like myself like tom you know bill might say something
09:32to tom like oh our so-called best quarterback and you're like sitting there like what yeah best core he is
09:38the best quarterback you know but it's just it's just uh well i guess you can't get it done rob i
09:43guess i'm gonna have to put somebody else out there to do it and you and it's just to poke you it's just
09:47to poke you you're pissed off just get you pissed off is that why somebody like your guess why somebody
09:52like mike mcdaniel is unable to be successful in oh i i i said years ago that i thought he was a
09:59it's a tough job for him because you have to stand in front of a room of grown men 90 grown men in the
10:06offseason and have every single one of them look at you and you lead them and they have to believe
10:11in everything you say but if you have a hard time communicating and you have a hard time relaying a
10:16message it's not going to work it's not going to work because the player has to number one respect
10:21you and they also number two have to believe in everything you say if you don't have the ability
10:25to to speak and relay a message and have the buy-in of the players you're never going to have success
10:32on the other side of the fraudulence easy on the other side of that though is that why mac jones
10:36didn't work under bill belichick because he couldn't handle bill saying stuff like that no i think
10:39it was the it was the situation i mean mac jones was a much better quarterback with who is his
10:46offensive coordinator josh mcdaniels josh mcdaniels yeah then josh mcdaniels he leaves and the the
10:51whole thing kind of falls apart and there was really no weapons there's no offensive line there's a big
10:55plethora of issues there um so i think that it's a mixture of you know situation um i mean life is
11:05all about situations timing you know i think it was bad time now he goes to another place and how
11:09does he look now he looks pretty dang good because he's with a different offensive coordinator the team
11:15is better you have more weapons to throw to who's he have as a running back mcaffrey mcaffrey a go-to
11:20guy so it's all situations um looking ahead to sunday and the fact that these guys uh may have
11:29they may be happy with the fact that their head coach isn't there any longer um is that a boost
11:33for the for the titans heading into this game and i think it's just a dumpster fire when you fire your
11:40coach this early into the season so i i don't i don't expect them to have more juice because they
11:46just fired their their head coach and i feel like you got brable coming into town so you know he's
11:52going to be ready to go you know he's jacked up for this one i mean this is like when a this is like
11:56digs against buffalo you know he's he's ready he's going to be ready to go he wants to show everybody
12:01that they made a mistake by not keeping him there and they made a mistake by hiring somebody else and
12:07that guy's not there so you know i i think it's going to be another situation where you know maybe
12:13a motivating factor to the team is there's there's been a point in your life where somebody is
12:19not wanted you so let's go out here as a team and let's show everybody that now sean i believe you
12:24did point out we are wanted uh the analytics say the the uh fired coach bounce is is legit
12:30in the uh in the gambling community uh there's always a uh fired coach bump you always always be
12:37weary of the team who's just coach just got fired because they're generally bump like look at what
12:42happened when they canned mcdaniels in vegas uh antonio pierce immediately comes out wins his
12:46first football game so it's just a be weary situation more than anything i could see i mean
12:52yeah but you're also getting that you're like somebody motivated the that one i i guess i could
12:59see in the with pierce that team because josh was probably every day like we suck you know like
13:06just going crazy we're like smoking cigars in the locker room yeah yeah i know that's isn't that a
13:10what a joke you know if you were smoking a cigar in a locker room and you just won your like third
13:14game i'd knock it out of your mouth it's almost like a gatorade bath what's the point of smoking
13:19a cigar we just beat the giants and it was the giants i do believe yeah rod mayo did get the
13:24gatorade bath after that week one yeah and i thought that was real silly but you're getting
13:29the bump for the revenge game for for able so it kind of like kind of like a level's everything
13:34everything everything out and i've always looked at and i agree with you on the josh mcdaniels thing
13:39you know better than anybody because you were actually with josh but what is josh doing like
13:45behind the scenes that is really making drake may you know play the way he's playing because you were
13:52actually there with him i was there with him but when i was there he was more like holding cards well
13:56i don't think i don't think right now drake is has the complete control and the whole playbook even
14:04right now i i think that josh has probably been smart with how do i install my offense how do i
14:12install an offense that has a mobile quarterback that i know can get out of situations who can run
14:17um which tom you know let's face it he's a he's a statue back there tom's not running for first downs
14:23tom's not you know trick playing it which we did a little bit of that right the throwbacks i mean the
14:29one they threw back to tom the one he dropped let's not talk about that um but i think that
14:33there's a maybe a different excitement for josh with hey i can run a style of offense that i really
14:39haven't been able to run before and i can also implement all my old school stuff so i can run
14:44what i love to run that i've run with tom because we have a guy that can throw from the pocket but i
14:48can also do some maybe some move the pocket stuff maybe some flat to the right stuff or left if you're
14:55a defender so you know i think right now i don't i i don't think they have the full offense together
15:01yet i think it's still slowly coming in because you have a young guy in his second year that you're
15:05trying to continue to boost his confidence and they've done a great job of that i mean think about
15:10week one where we're at right now drake's got to feel pretty good about himself right and josh even
15:15said that like we haven't even gave remember there was that whole point in time where it's like
15:20when josh was like we haven't even put in uh which is a small part of we're not overloading
15:26man i mean people thought they were overloading them and josh was like we haven't even done that
15:30so it's interesting that you say that there's also probably going to be a control aspect of it to
15:34where hey i'll give you two plays uh you you kill it or you know live dead tags all that stuff
15:40and everyone's like what is he talking about it's two plays within a play and depending on the defense
15:45you select the play that you feel is the best fit based on numbers because at the end of the day
15:50football is all about numbers you know it's freedom at the line freedom at the line yeah maybe you can
15:55check some stuff you know go into something he's more comfortable with and you know in two minute
16:00you got to think two minute is usually your best plays that a team is most confident in running so if
16:06he can have a good amount of plays that he's confident with you give him more control and then you know he
16:12turns into a guy that can check at the line of scrimmage a guy that's you know the drew breezes
16:18of the world the mannings of the world toms of the world where as a defender you're like okay don't
16:23show our safety movement do not show the safeties if we rotate too early he's going to check the play
16:28if you're a blitzing uh linebacker do not take a step until you know he's going into his cadence or
16:33else he's going to say check check check 52's the mic uh rita rita rita slide the line right
16:39you know all that says rita rita rita or she used to at loco before she was pregnant truly i can't
16:45wait for that moment again all right we got rob ninkovich is here aruba aruba aruba aruba is
16:52beautiful it is yeah we should be a citizen of aruba i'm trying to have the end of the the end of
16:59the dreads are kind of you know highlights for my lead this morning but i wanted you to weigh in
17:05on science determining that the kansas city chiefs are are getting calls left and right well i have
17:10a silver f-350 and the birds poop on it all the time i heard about that scientific research and i
17:16think that's bs but anyway yes i honestly i don't know i'd have to see some more of the research and
17:23see some more of this like where they're getting their facts from i could tell you this though the
17:28quarterback once they get to a specific level of success and you know protection honestly they're
17:36going to get more calls i mean i i think if you look at if you look at uh patrick mahomes early part
17:42of his career versus where he's at now or in general did you see jackson dart get absolutely destroyed
17:48and no flags like the dude dropped weight on his chin and like smashed his face and i remember just
17:54like thinking in the moment like that's got to be a flag right no flags if that was patrick mahomes
18:00there would be six flags from every direction just flying in the back from the back judge would be
18:05flinging a flag across the field so you know the thing that bothers me i think that bothers me is i
18:11think kansas city has put themselves in the position where they're annoying because of the way that the
18:18flags are thrown in certain instances the quarterback acting like he's going to go out of bounds
18:23doesn't go out of bounds then he then he flops on the sideline or he gets hit and he flops and he
18:28looks right up to the ref and you know his chin strap is across his face because it's loose and then he
18:33goes points to his head and then they throw the flag you know but those are the things that bother
18:37though like in the league when you were playing for the pats and it brady was at that i think tom got a
18:42few calls and the other team but then i also think he didn't you know and he got suspended four games
18:47for doing nothing so it all that was dumb a lot of silliness going on but i mean wasn't there a game
18:53when he was with tampo where he got like choked like the guy like choked him as he was like pushing
18:59him to the ground and tom was choking me no flag no flags so i don't know i think it depends on the
19:07situation but you know now those flags against the patriots that let's let's talk about those because
19:13those were crazy oh my god have you ever seen anything i've never seen anything like it now
19:18basically special teams are already out there it's crazy crazy okay that is crazy to me because
19:24you to validate how there is no validation oh okay so the the offensive pass interference
19:29on the first one crazy like that was a touchdown yeah i didn't even understand it i didn't even
19:35understand because he doesn't he didn't affect the coverage right and there are certain instances
19:40where the receiver picks or stops the defender saying he was blocking he wasn't he was just
19:46getting straight up the field and the defender put his hands on him that one was terrible atrocious
19:52now where he had that deep pass and he did extend his arm i can see the extended arm as
20:00an offensive pass interference because if you if you extend your hand out in a straight that's that's
20:08like uh having a red glove on a white jersey right like you see that out there you're also
20:13should be allowed to figure out where the defender is which is oftentimes i think what's going yeah
20:19but he put a post out there you can't do that he said just wing yeah you gotta chicken wings so
20:23gronk honestly gronk was the best at not extending his arm but he had such long arms right and he would
20:30he would flipper you so as you get tight to him you're on him you're on him you're on him he gives
20:35you a flipper wing as he's cutting so that is almost like an arm because he's so long high and
20:40it would push you out just a little bit and can't do that once you extend can't extend once you extend
20:46because what the db will say and as an offensive player it's true it just creates a little bit of
20:51space for you not to make that extra step and it just might be a boom and then here but you can't
20:57extend that's why i always got to teach him flip chicken wing lean on it never extend and wouldn't
21:03that really piss off defenders because you already you already understand that the league goes out of
21:07its way to protect quarterbacks and even if you don't agree with it you understand why but the way
21:11that mahomes has been sort of just mocking it in a way like when he was running that when he did that
21:18on the sideline like i feel like there are defenders that are going to want to take him out
21:20i would want i would want to just like take his legs out and try to give him the worst deep thigh
21:26bruise he's ever had in his life you know because i've had a deep thigh one time we were playing the
21:31ravens in the playoffs and mayo i think he knocked himself out on my thigh and my thigh board was
21:37broken half my the actual plastic inside the thigh board was broken and i had the worst thigh bruise
21:44from that game all the way through the super bowl had blood all the way in my ankle it was crazy how
21:49much was a fine for that because i never wore pads how much was i fine for the guy because there was a
21:54point in time where you had to you had to wear them right so you would get fined if you didn't wear
21:58him because we never wore them yeah you guys were crazy yeah you you guys were in the era of like
22:02no thigh pads no knee pad i like to have it doesn't affect his performance at all on the radio
22:07no no no no no no no no thigh pads but it's you know what the coach said hey listen you're not
22:12gonna wear those thigh pads you better not come up in here with a thigh bruise my leg would be at times
22:17like oh
22:17like oh
