00:00Hi, I'm Mike Bush, Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police and I want to speak directly to every
00:06Victorian today.
00:07We have a crime problem here in Victoria and the levels of offending we're seeing in our
00:12communities are simply unacceptable.
00:15Good people, innocent people, going about their everyday lives are being victimised
00:19in their own homes and on our streets.
00:23That cannot continue.
00:25Our people are doing an exceptional job responding to crime and other incidents, but we need
00:30to make some changes to enable them to do their job as effectively as possible.
00:37This week I announced major reforms to how Victoria Police operates.
00:42These changes will free up thousands of police hours every year, putting more of our members
00:48back on the streets where they can prevent crime before it happens.
00:51We're cutting bureaucracy, modernising technology and reshaping how we work, all to better support
00:58the front line, the backbone of Victoria Police.
01:02That includes new initiatives to release sworn officers from station counter duties, dedicated
01:08admin teams to help process arrests faster and the establishment of a new State Crime Coordination
01:15centre.
01:16A 24-7 hub, using advanced data and intelligence, to deploy resources in real time and stop crime
01:24before it occurs.
01:26These are big changes, but they're necessary ones.
01:30Because to stay ahead of criminals and stop the offending before it happens, we need to
01:34change how we police.
01:37This is about helping our members do what they do best, protecting Victorians.
01:42These changes give us the foundation we need to reduce crime, rebuild trust and make sure
01:48every Victorian feels safe in their community.
