Victoria’s Police Minister confusion over crime and bail laws review ahead of by-election

Victoria’s Police Minister has downplayed the scope of a review into crime and bail laws, just a day after it was announced by the Premier. It comes as police investigate serious crimes in the two electorates heading to by-elections this Saturday.

00:00We can't wake up every morning and see the kinds of things that we're seeing right now.

00:06We can't be looking over our shoulders because of the kinds of offences that are happening.

00:11The Premier conceded there's community concern about crime.

00:15I've asked the Attorney-General and the Police Minister to review the settings,

00:19review the current laws, review our law settings.

00:22But by this morning, that message didn't seem to have reached the Police Minister.

00:27I wouldn't even say that there's particularly a review.

00:30We're always doing this work. I'm okay if you want to call it a review.

00:33But all I'm saying to you is...

00:34We need the Premier to call it a review.

00:36By question time, the opposition was capitalising on the confusion.

00:40This morning, the Minister for Police contradicted the Premier

00:43by confirming there is no formal review.

00:46Who is telling the truth?

00:48I've asked the Minister for Police and the Attorney-General

00:51to review our current settings, including bail.

00:54The terms of reference for this work are crystal clear.

01:01But it seems clear as mud.

01:03And for the second sitting day of the year, the government's been spinning its wheels

01:07as the opposition grills Labor on crime,

01:10hoping to lock up more votes at this weekend's by-elections.
