Could Vrabel be in line for CoY?
Curtis: "He has the best qualities of a former player and a former coach"
Is Vrabel the perfect combination?
Transcript
00:00Gerard Mayo was last year, Bill Belichick was the year before, and Mike Vrabel is here now.
00:06And not only does his age split the two, but I think he has the best qualities of each,
00:12and there was a lot more good coaching qualities from Bill Belichick than from Gerard Mayo,
00:15but work with me. He is the reason I feel that what the Patriots have done the last three weeks
00:23is something they can replicate the rest of the season. He has bought into the team from the thing
00:28that was kind of hard-o, jumping into scrums in training camp, to standing up for players
00:35when Ramondre continues to fumble, as Courtney has accurately alluded to over the last several weeks.
00:40Standing up for Pop Douglas when he didn't know where he should be on the football field.
00:44And what that does, and also I think a huge component, is that he hasn't been too public
00:50with over-the-top praise for Drake May, where what Drake's done the last three weeks
00:55is the best quarterback play in the NFL by a pretty big margin. He has been an MVP quality
01:01guy the last three games, and Shima's been spot on on that. But Vrabel hasn't gone out of his way
01:06to praise the guy that's already being praised. He has the best qualities of a former player
01:11and a former coach. His experience in Tennessee has shaped how he's coached here.
01:16He went in eyes wide open. He's got his, you know, trusted stretch on the mic every time he needs
01:20to figure out a challenge. And things like that final challenge of the game with the two minutes
01:25and 30 seconds and Booty being inbounds versus out-of-bounds, does anybody believe Gerard Mayo
01:30challenges that?
01:31No.
01:31So it's the ability to be connected that may have been difficult for Belichick, and it's
01:36the ability to understand what players need to hear and what they don't, what will be said
01:45but ignored. I just find him to be, if I had to vote, I know Steichen's the favorite. He's the
01:51coach of the year, and it's not been any big game plan. It's been that he's sort of perfectly split
01:55the last two coaching failures and appears to be a guy that's ready to, you know, be in this
02:00position for a decade to come.
02:02I think what he's done is more impressive because he's done it in, you know, a relatively short period
02:08of the time, as opposed to the Vikings, which, you know, that head coach was there all last
02:13season.
02:14So...
02:15Yeah, the same with the Colts guys. He's been there, what, Charm, did you say? Two or three
02:19years he's been there?
02:20Two years now.
02:21Two years. So I think you're right. It does make it harder where you come in, and, you
02:26know, it's going to have to come...
02:27It's a rapid turnaround.
02:28Yeah.
02:29With a dumpster fire of a roster. I mean, yes, he did go out. You got to acknowledge he went
02:33out and brought some guys here, his guys, and they have performed great and are a big
02:38part of, I think, what he has done from a culture change point of view, but it's pretty
02:44impressive.
02:44And the confidence is what I would say also is the biggest trait. Like, whenever Vrabel
02:48comes in, there's no doubt about... He's not... I don't think he really sits back and
02:53is wondering if he's saying the right thing at all times. I feel like he's a guy that knows
02:56what he wants and says what he needs.
02:57If he gets them to 12 wins in a playoff team, and even better if they win the division, then
03:04he should definitely be... I would say he would be the favorite to be coach of the year.
