00:00morning coach good morning how are you did they like our advertisement last week with the men's
00:04health and the clean drain or how did that i think they did yeah they did they like that
00:07they reached out they uh we were talking about wiggies drain yeah yeah they reached they actually
00:12reached out they wanted to know if you need any help no i don't no everything's okay uh listen
00:18i'll tell you who doesn't need any help and that is your buckeyes uh nice win over the weekend yeah
00:23i mean i think it was a it was a slow game i thought the fourth quarter brought some action
00:28but uh you know we'll see how it goes i watched a little bit of it and go from there you played
00:35uh against an overrated manning at one point in your career so you can you can relate well done
00:41um i was here i was here social media is a brutal brutal place and it never misses no i mean some
00:51of the stuff is just do you do you look at any of that do you well i mean it's hard not to you know
00:57i mean it's hard not to see some of the references and just you know people send them and then it's
01:02just like it's one thing after another and it's just like you didn't think it could get any better
01:06and then it does and it's just it's first 30 seconds of his day yeah first 30 seconds of your
01:11day is looking at social media that's what you said get the news there was a new new manning face it
01:17was this all the rage you know you created the old one now there's another one it was um there
01:21were some good ones yeah um i was here wednesday night for the uh kickoff and you talked about this
01:28team's identity uh in fact you said that uh that we should all ask any of the uh of the players that
01:35were there on wednesday night and they ought to be able to tell us what the identity is what is in
01:40your mind the identity is well again we can talk about it again and i've heard and learned that uh i i
01:46see better than i hear and so our identity is going to have to be what we put on tape but ideally
01:51you know what we would like is is our play style our play demeanor the the how much how hard we play
02:00i mean i think it certainly starts there we have to um you know be be smart with the football we have
02:06to have guys that take take the football away you know i think that looking for opportunities to do
02:10that finding ways to tip passes that get intercepted finding finding ways to hit guys hard
02:16enough to knock the ball loose we need guys that are willing to protect the guy with the ball and i
02:21think that you're going to see that and hopefully that we get the right guys that care about you know
02:25if we throw it to to wiggy you know we all need to go and and protect them there's one football there's
02:31five guys that are eligible the quarterback decides who to throw to everybody else has to just go and
02:36finish um we would love to play with great fundamentals understand the details of the
02:40play and make great decisions you know that that don't cost the team and i get penalties happen
02:45penalties are going to occur but i think the things that when it's a decision making is it full body
02:50weight on the quarterback is it a is it a blind side hit or do i high screen on a punt return uh defenseless
02:56receiver being the second guy and all these things where i feel like that's a decision that's a
03:01conscious conscious decision hopefully we're making great decisions um and that we can take advantage of
03:07bad football when when you look at the actual scheme mike you know you come from obviously
03:12tennessee where you you ran the ball first and then you try to play good defense are you going to be a
03:18week-to-week game plan type of team or are you going to say we want to try to run the ball first
03:23and play great defense or is that just going to change based on who your opponent is i mean i think it
03:28changes based on who your opponent is i think our best player in tennessee uh for for most of those
03:35years was was our running back and so i think you do what you uh what your teams are equipped for
03:41and have the ability to adjust and you know i thought there were when we had to throw the ball
03:46and we we threw it on our terms and you let plays marry and partner with each other and build that
03:53there's complementary plays you know i would think that hopefully the the majority of our first and
03:58second down offense if you're talking offensively you know you have to be able to run the football you
04:04have to be able to marry those passes up you have to be able to throw some screens to to guys uh it's
04:10hard to live in a drop back passing game in this league i just think that to to do that is play it
04:16and play out is is hard and and so you don't want to end up living in that game there's times where
04:21the game dictates that you'll have to but you know we always want to be balanced and and do what the
04:26defense you know will allow us to do on our terms when it comes to drake he's made a point to say
04:32that throughout the preseason he's felt like he's been a bit jittery right off the jump and he needs
04:36to control that so that he makes less mistakes what have you as his head coach seen him do to
04:41prepare for week one to be better at that well i think it's about just his preparation to not not
04:48the the preparation of the game or the game plan is just you know making sure that he's uh in a place
04:55that he's comfortable when the game starts and again i i want them all to be excited i need we are
05:00going to need energy and and passion and enthusiasm but that can't override our job and so making
05:07sure that um that we get into drives and we try to script structure practice the same way we would
05:14with the games and try to focus on that and how we start the game and the break and trying to finish
05:20strong and win the second half i know you talked a little bit about jabril peppers yesterday said it
05:25wasn't a scheme thing looking at it from the uneducated outside which is which is where i sit
05:31um i know there's you know in some areas not necessarily a lot of depth on this team
05:37um how difficult is it to make a decision like that to release a guy who looks like somebody
05:42you know who should be on this 53 man roster yeah it's all those are always tough i mean those
05:46those are always tough they're difficult um but we're trying to do what's best for the team and
05:52again we uh try to make decisions uh that we feel like are going to help us in the long term in the
06:00short term and those are difficult i had a personal relationship with jabril i loved getting to know him
06:07and coach him and we're just trying to get it right and obviously understand where we are from
06:12from the youth and the veterans that we have in the position uh room uh and how it how it was and
06:19how it sat mike the roster turnover i think it's about 50 from last year and it feels like it has
06:27been a point of emphasis to get new leaders i think all the captains are new two of the six captains
06:33i believe are people that were brought in this offseason how much of your approach to this year
06:39was predicated upon making sure that the leaders that were four and 13 the last two years were not
06:44the leaders this year and and somebody asked me that yesterday and i've never and i don't think
06:49anybody else has been intentional on that uh or with that um and i can see you know that that's kind
06:58of how things go when there's change and there's turnover and some of those players were free agents
07:03some of those players uh we've moved on from um you know in the offseason some of them have been
07:10currently but that that was never anyone's intent we're just trying to you know build the
07:16build the position groups and build the team and try to figure out what we need and um you know
07:22leadership i think will always continue to to grow and evolve and i hope that
07:27we have many more leaders than just the the six that were were named captain and on that steph diggs
07:34was one that a lot of people were surprised was not named a captain given that we had heard he'd
07:38been leading the receiving group were you surprised that the players didn't vote for steph diggs uh
07:42again i with this with this league i don't think i've tried to use the word surprised i think
07:49you know steph uh got votes um and again we just try to look at where the voting came out and
07:54uh recognize how the players voted mike one of the things as a pats fan i woke up can't remember
08:01when it was and i said damn michael posses is in green bay were you guys in on him um you know the
08:09we continue to have conversations about all players that are available um you know mike i
08:16like i think you love saying michael possens yeah i mean i would have loved to have seen that
08:20the first jersey i would have went and got on no variable jersey do you have any jerseys you have
08:26jerseys i do have a variable when he says dynamic player great player um but but uh you know i just
08:33you know we were that wasn't something that you know we really um invested a lot of time or or
08:42resources and i think when you just try to look at what we feel like is is best for us right now
08:48uh that wasn't entertaining that specific um you know transaction interesting well it's
08:59generational but my guy sean would say generational player that you get at a bargain price yeah i don't
09:06you know maybe bargain price it just um you know i think we just have to be very smart on on building
09:12this thing and i hope that everybody else sees it the same way um outside of here and we want to
09:18bring in players that feel like give us the best chance but also you know we we have to build some
09:26some depth there to this roster and to do that from the draft and just it hasn't been and we'll call
09:31it what it is it hasn't been real great the depth of the roster has not been uh through our draft the
09:37last uh handful years and that has to change we all know that so um we'll focus on that when we
09:43get there in april right now it's you know putting guys in roles that have some versatility and building
09:50the game day roster and all these different things but i think the best teams in the league draft well
09:55they develop their players they re-sign them you know and then they they carefully choose the players
10:02that they want to add in in free agency could you say that the drafts that being bad the last several
10:07years precluded you from trading first round picks because you need those no no i i was just saying
10:12that when we when we build this thing and and moving forward we want to build it and make sure that
10:18we're we're we're building through the draft um and then again like i said retaining the players that
10:26that we feel like have developed and have earned contracts and um you know while micah parsons and
10:33he's a great player you know just you know probably wasn't the the best uh fit or the right time i
10:41think for us yeah did tommy cutlets to the roster did you have to negotiate with sean stellato or i did
10:49it okay and when you claim when you claim somebody you don't have to negotiate with them all right so
10:55you just take them you just grab their hair and drag them so you don't have to really
10:59interact no big big saint anthony yeah saint anthony's feast yeah he was everywhere why not
11:06sean stellato i guess it's like christmas day for sean how you doing i'm gonna go do a lot of talks
11:15at saint john's prep yeah back to steph diggs uh last week we talked to you about him you said you
11:22expect him to contribute uh to this team a lot now that it's game week he's still on track to be able
11:27to go week one and be good yep yep i would imagine that as of today he'll be out there
11:34great uh what's the update on gonzalez and and uh i know he didn't practice yesterday
11:41he didn't practice yesterday that's the only update i can i can't haven't seen anything from uh
11:48i haven't met with the trainers i gotta see you guys before okay and then i'll see uh but that's
11:53the trainers that's injury related you know people look at a young player sometimes and wonder hey
11:58is there some kind of quiet hole oh no i mean i said he's yesterday i said he's working hard to
12:02to come back and when he's ready to to get back out and practice hopefully that's this week and then we
12:10can decide and go from there mike you you look at will campbell first game of the season i think
12:16you better than anybody can give him the advice he needs especially to see a guy like max crosby and
12:23maybe some of the techniques and some of the you know i don't know veteran kind of uh tips that you
12:30might be able to give him to help with a guy like that what are you saying to will uh about this matchup
12:36well it's going to be with all of them and then max can can line up wherever he wants
12:40and uh or they can put him wherever they want uh so it i think it has to be for for everybody
12:46blocking him and he has a certain play style you know i think if you drop your head he's going to
12:51jump around and if you're overaggressive he's going to you know try to make you miss i think just
12:55a certain play style of just having making sure we're not overextended um to to where and again he
13:04has a very unique play style where he'll jab and jump around and he uses his length and as
13:09athleticism as opposed to let's say maybe more of a a power player not that he can't do that but
13:15but again he makes his um money with instinctiveness and and jumping under if you overreach him he's
13:22he's coming under and he's getting in the backfield do you tell him be patient well it's just making
13:27sure that you can't sit there and wait you have to if in a run game you have to you have to go get
13:31on him but you have to make sure that you're not out of control and that your your head's up and
13:34your eyes are up and that you're able to uh to redirect and again not be overly aggressive uh when
13:40you're trying to block players like that and again it'll change based on who the player is and
13:44who you're going against but but that would be you know max's skill set did you watch the uh unc
13:50tcu game last night uh probably i maybe a few snaps that's all the
13:57first drive first drive thing of beauty yeah it was a thing of beauty if they would end in a game
14:10after the first job it would be good you guys seem to be excited about that no no i i listen i am i'm
14:16rooting for the guy and i think you know i mean you you've coached in college it takes a while don't
14:22you think to get a program going in there like that uh i don't know urban meyer won 12 of the
14:28first 12 games in ohio state so it didn't take him long i'm just that that's my experience in
14:32college football all right okay but so we have the cop but isn't it like i i because i mean i think i
14:38can only imagine the landscape of college football now and uh you know hey who are you oh i just came
14:44from wherever and right i'm sure it's it's probably not as easy outside of the you know top few programs
14:51ohio state guys have to take a pay cut when they get to the nfl maybe hopefully but isn't that
14:56it's called the put it under the budget line for winning yeah but isn't that the difficult thing
15:01that obviously bill's going to have to navigate for i know when you i don't know what he's going
15:05to have to navigate you know i mean i've got plenty to navigate here was your son happy with the eagles
15:10went on saturday yeah he was excited for his first game and uh yeah yeah he got to wear a headset so
15:15he's uh he's official that's awesome all right well uh you're the mike brable era gets underway
15:22sunday and so yeah it does it's here um and we wish you the best of luck i know uh wednesday night
15:28you sort of refuse to answer the question about your favorite restaurant in boston well that doesn't
15:35you know i mean there's going to be a lot of places i go to so why would i you know i mean it's like
15:38who's your favorite co-host well i mean swiggy i mean i i like them all different i don't like
15:46them all equally of all the choices that he had of the three choices he had it was i would not pick
15:51wiki i'd put it out there right now i heard that was your favorite teammate though come on yeah
15:55i heard from some people down in the seaport they were like wait a second guy can't you can't
16:01throw us a little plug out there yeah i guess a bunch of everybody's pillow talking
16:05that's the problem with this place everybody pillow talks we got rats
16:09who ever gets restaurant rats it's all about put a name on it or i ain't paying attention
16:13i'll live my life you live yours outside of here how about that it's all about the freebie
16:18i just got no i don't mind paying no i don't mind what he does yeah we already asked you for a jersey
16:26yeah we've already been two different pay skills even when we played but i have to ask this
16:32question you got a parking pass for sunday you wouldn't even pay for it i can't get one here
16:36believe me you can't get a pet we'll get you okay you know what's interesting though in north street
16:41answer i was trying to come back brock bowers i want to you know talk about georgia uh bulldog like
16:51myself but here we go no no no but that's where the comparison is very very good player very athletic
17:00but the the matchup nightmare that he presents yep he treat him as a wide receiver um he will
17:07you know play in line he will block uh at great length i think the biggest thing that he continues
17:14to gain speed as he's down the field and try to locate and find the ball he doesn't lose speed i
17:19think that's you have to treat him as a receiver uh they do a lot with him you know the full route
17:25tree they'll take shots to him so that'll be an important matchup and also you know just being able
17:33to um know where he is and be able to find him and understand you know what he's trying to do from
17:38the different locations that they put him in all right well we'll let you go get ready uh get ready
17:43for week month thanks appreciate it guys mike
