"We needed to put the fire out this week"- NE HC Mike Vrabel talks ball security and finding a balance. Maye ahead of schedule after 4 weeks? #
Transcript
00:00When you get into that mode of maybe you fumble a couple times,
00:04sometimes you'll put two hands on it, you'll over-secure it,
00:08which takes away from maybe your ability to run after catch or hit holes.
00:13How do you make sure that you balance the ball security
00:16but still being an aggressive runner?
00:19I think that that's obviously what the balance is,
00:22and we needed to put the fire out this week,
00:24so we were able to create some explosives, but you're right.
00:28You can't just sit there and run through with two hands on the football
00:32and crouched over on it and gain three yards.
00:36But you also have to take care of it,
00:38and I think it was important for us to put the fire out
00:40and, like you said, continue to still be aggressive with the football in our hands
00:43and be able to make yards after the catch or the run.
00:45Do you think Drake made his ahead of schedule
00:47about where you thought he'd be through four weeks?
00:49I really didn't have a timetable.
00:51I'm not really sure.
00:51We're just trying to throw the guy that's open as soon as he is in the progression
00:54and then take care of the football, and when he's not there, use his legs,
00:57and I think he's done that at times and will continue to work on it.
01:02Do you see a comp between him and Josh Allen?
01:04That was the big sort of...
01:05No, I'm not big into comparisons.
01:07I think you guys know that by now, but if not, we'll keep reminding you.
01:10I'm not big into comparisons.
01:12Steph Diggs said that his comfortability within the offense
01:15is a 5 out of 10 right now.
01:16Is that just how he feels?
01:18Then he should study more.
01:21Okay.
01:22I love this view, by the way.
01:24This is like, let's go get him.
01:255 out of 10.
01:26Let's go get him.
01:27We need to get going.
01:27I'll have to talk to Steph today.
01:29You got to know the playbook inside and out.
01:32Yeah, I just didn't know...
01:33I mean, 5 out of 10.
01:34I went to Ohio State and said he was failing.
01:37Yeah, that's not good.
01:39Go ahead.
01:39Sorry for you.
01:40No, no.
01:40I just didn't know if it was him feeling comfortable coming back from injury
01:43or if it was how he felt with Drake or within the offense.
01:46I didn't know...
01:47Well, again, we'll have to clarify what part of it is 50%.
01:50We'll have to have a winning effort physically, mentally,
01:54and whatever the third one was.
01:56We'll have to bump it up a little bit here to see what's going on.
01:59I think the third one's emotionally.
02:01Emotionally.
02:01We need to be better in all three phases then
02:04because that's not good enough.
02:06Mike, what was the difference after the first series defensively,
02:10adjustment-wise, that you made against...
02:12You know what I mean?
02:12Trying to disguise a little bit and just get our eyes in the right place.
02:16They're moving guys and motion in and flashing them after the snap.
02:19And, you know, that was...
02:23You know, then we'd pick each other.
02:24You know what I mean?
02:25We got that weak side bunch formation that we've seen for pretty much
02:29since we started practicing football and we were running to each other.
02:33So I thought when we settled down,
02:36I thought just being able to hold the disguise,
02:39they were trying to motion and shift and do different things.
02:42And we just needed to settle down and relax and play football
02:46and fit where we're supposed to fit, push the pocket,
02:50not let the quarterback scramble, extend plays,
02:53which I thought that was good.
02:55He had a lot of just third-down conversions just by scrambling.
02:59That can be deflating.
03:01Well, that'll be huge this week, obviously, coming up.
03:03So I did a lot of those things well.
