How to Compare the Culture You Have with the One You Want | Les Landes on Employee Engagement

Description:
If you could identify the traits and characteristics that define your culture—both what you want and what you don’t—how would you compare what you currently have with what you wish you had?

In my conversation with Les Landes, author of Getting to the Heart of Employee Engagement, he explained a practical process for identifying your current cultural state, envisioning your ideal one, and bridging the gap between them.

00:00We have 40 value statements, and instead of a Likert scale, the people who are participating
00:04in the assessment take these all 40 statements on an inverted pyramid, and they put the values
00:10that are most like their current culture on the left, least like their current culture on the
00:14right. They create a word picture of all of these value statements. Then we flip it over,
00:19and we say, now do the same thing for the culture you would love to have, your target culture,
00:24your desired culture. So can you give me some examples of what some of those word statements
00:28would be that would describe the culture? Visualize this, okay?
00:32Cover the mistakes of others. Pay attention to hierarchy and status. Work long hours. Demonstrate
00:38trust and respect for people. Communicate openly and honestly. And so as you can hear, there are
00:44some highly negative kinds of things and some highly positive kinds of things.
