00:00What you doing? We're going to see if we can set up a tent today. I'm Garrett and this is my wife
00:04Lauren and we just booked what we hope will be an epic hiking trip through Peru. We just have
00:09one major concern. Neither one of us have slept outside before. So in addition to each spending
00:15hours on a Stairmaster and sweating all over the treadmills, we're going to test out our camping
00:20skills. We're going to go truck camping. I think she's really happy about it. For this we had to
00:24buy a lot of stuff. So we ordered Amazon packages, went to Walmart, and now here we are trying to
00:30assemble a tent in our driveway. No, this isn't an intro. Mistakes were definitely made in this first
00:36attempt at camping. I feel like it just got worse. We don't really know how to make a campfire. But in a
00:42lot of ways we thrive, especially when it came to the food. Are you in the pocket? Hold on, hold on.
00:49Do these go in the same ones as the black? Meow. Oh, I am a tent. Can we do this inside out? No.
01:04Can we both fit on one? We can try to lay on it, but it's not going to be fun.
01:10Oh, come on. Do you think our sleeping bags have enough padding? I'm not going to be snoring.
01:15Drink wine, you might be. Garrett.
01:18Garrett should not be a ding-dong when he's setting up a tent.
01:23In what at the time felt like a stroke of genius, we piled everything into the tent and then
01:29collapsed it for what we hoped would be a quick setup when we arrived.
01:33So the car is packed. We are ready to go. We had a little bit of an incident.
01:40Spilled a whole thing of coffee on the floor.
01:42Here we go. We're headed to Broken Bow, Oklahoma. There's like a state park. I think the name's
01:52Beavers Bend. So it's about a three and a half hour drive. So we'll see you there shortly.
01:55Just one quick stop. There she is. Lauren keeps talking about how much fun she had in Paris and she wants to go back.
02:04So on our drive, I was like, huh, we can stop by.
02:08The Eiffel Tower in Paris, Texas. It's got a cowboy hat on the top of it.
02:12It's like the real thing, but smaller and with more style.
02:16It's out of prison. I'm losing family members.
02:19See the little deer right there? Hello, dude.
02:26Camping in the back of the truck was a foolproof plan until we realized that we actually had to get the truck
02:31right up next to the campsite.
02:36This is home.
02:4024 hours, starting now. That's my jacket.
02:43First thing we're doing is eating food because no one wants to put up a tent hangry.
02:49Bad decisions or bad words that you normally would not say. So we're going to be proactive.
02:55Marriage tip 101.
02:57I found the bread clip. Lauren's feet. She's sitting on this picnic table.
03:00It's a really high picnic table. They don't quite touch the ground, but my truck normally has this cover on it.
03:06So in order to set up this tent, I take it off. Now Lauren and I are about to put up this tent.
03:13Pretty big tent, as you can see. There's space to hang stuff up there, so it should be a good night.
03:27The reason here is heavy breathing in the background is sort of my fault.
03:31I had this genius idea that we could blow up our air mattress at home and then leave it in the bed of the truck,
03:38but the temperature dropped overnight and it lost a lot of air pressure.
03:42So now I'm going to go make sure that he hasn't passed out.
03:45I feel like it's not going any more than this. I feel like it just got worse.
03:50Well, my contribution is picking up all the rocks that we could potentially fall on and break an ankle.
04:00I'm putting them on this fire pit pile.
04:03There's our little fire pit for the night and our two chairs.
04:06There's our picnic table where we'll be eating.
04:09I have a little grill thingy over there, but we're probably not going to use that.
04:12Welcome to my tent.
04:14This is our home for the evening.
04:19We have a bed, two sleeping bags, and a duvet.
04:24The duvet was a stupid idea.
04:26We thought it would give us extra warmth, but once the temperatures dropped,
04:29the duvet was freezing and it honestly made us colder.
04:32Some pillows, a little speaker, a lantern, and some fairy lights that Garrett thinks are going to catch our tent on fire.
04:43Those fairy lights are left over from a friend's rehearsal dinner.
04:47Sloan Brady, those are from your wedding.
04:50Got everything ready to go, so we're just walking around for a little bit before we cook some dinner.
04:55Oh, she's smoking.
05:04Propane, a little propane stain cooker thing.
05:07That we have no clue how to use.
05:09Absolutely none.
05:10We are making a chickpea curry.
05:12For dessert, we're making an apple fritter.
05:16Apple crisp.
05:17Oh, sorry.
05:18You're going to try for the first time to cook with propane.
05:22Let's see how it goes.
05:24Olive oil.
05:25I successfully have a flame.
05:26I'm going to start sautéing those onions.
05:27Sounds like they're heating up fast.
05:28Next up is my spices that I pre-mixed at home.
05:29I'm going to get my onions all coated.
05:30I can already smell the graham marsala.
05:31I'm sure half the campsite can smell our graham marsala.
05:33It's all good.
05:34Add some coconut milk.
05:35Yeah.
05:36Yeah.
05:37Yeah.
05:38Yeah.
05:39Yeah.
05:40Yeah.
05:41Yeah.
05:42Yeah.
05:43Yeah.
05:44Yeah.
05:45Yeah.
05:46Yeah.
05:47Yeah.
05:48Yeah.
05:49Yeah.
05:50Yeah.
05:51Yeah.
05:52Yeah.
05:53Yeah.
05:54Yeah.
05:55Yeah.
05:56There we go.
05:57About two tablespoons worth of tomato paste.
06:00I think it's about time to add the chickpeas.
06:03We went with a vegetarian or vegan dish because we didn't want to have to haul meat out here.
06:08Oh, it smells so good.
06:10I wish you could smell this, but hopefully it looks close to as good as how it smells.
06:15All right.
06:16We're going to let this simmer for 10 minutes.
06:18While we do that, we're going to cut up some of our toppings, our cilantro and our lime.
06:22Let this thicken and then we'll cook our rice.
06:24This is the recipe that we're making.
06:26We'll go ahead and link it down in the description and let you know what we think, but so far
06:31it looks and smells absolutely amazing.
06:34This is how you wash vegetables in the woods.
06:37Squirt bottle.
06:39Nine.
06:40All right.
06:41To go with our curry, we got this jasmine rice pre-cooked, so we're just going to warm
06:47it up in the pan with a little bit of water.
06:49Real mess.
06:50Well, our other pan was clearly too small to cook on this stove, so we're trying a new
06:56method.
06:57It's not going to look as pretty in the bowl.
06:59People who know me know that I love food presentation, but since we're not going to have that on our
07:05side, we're just going to mix the rice in with some cilantro and a lime wedge.
07:15Time to try our first ever camping meal.
07:21Yeah.
07:25It cooked a little faster than I went on to.
07:27We couldn't really quite figure out the heat settings on the propane tank, and then Garrett
07:31kept trying to turn it down but turning it off, but 8 out of 10.
07:34Give it a 10 out of 10.
07:36You can taste the garam marsala and the hint of cinnamon, which I like.
07:39Now we're just doing some prepping for the night.
07:41Trying to get everything ready before it gets dark out here, because we've never been camping
07:45before.
07:46We're scared.
07:47Lauren's got this fire.
07:48She's starting to put some firewoods in a cool teepee formation, if you can see that.
07:53We don't really know how to make a campfire, but I think we're getting pretty close.
07:58We definitely were starving of oxygen for a while, and then we definitely didn't give
08:02it enough brush to burn, but I think we're going to be able to make a s'more on this here
08:07in a couple hours.
08:08Rough day building the campfire.
08:13With our pre-bought wood and our pre-bought fire starter.
08:16I had to go chop that wood down.
08:18We still can't figure it out.
08:20Cheers to our first ever camping trip.
08:24To many more.
08:26It took four fire starters.
08:29A whole bunch of us scrounging around on the ground for sticks and tinder.
08:33We have officially, successfully created our fire.
08:36Okay, next time we're going to bring an axe, and Garrett's going to chop up some wood himself.
08:42Fire going good, and it's putting off some good warmth.
08:46My phone died, but the temperature's dropping a little bit.
08:49It's probably about, I don't know, in the 40s sometimes.
08:52Let's get to the low 30s, but we'll be good as long as the fire keeps rolling.
08:57Garrett's quickly becoming obsessed with the fire.
08:59I'm obsessed with the idea of making some s'mores on this fire.
09:05She's got her s'more.
09:08The chocolate sounded very hard.
09:11How is it?
09:13Time for one last snack today.
09:16Some campfire apples.
09:18Do you see the stars?
09:20Probably not, but they're beautiful.
09:22Goodnight Oklahoma.
09:24Good morning from our tent.
09:26It's about 7am I think.
09:28I'm probably going to go out and make some coffee.
09:31I slept pretty good.
09:32My sleeping bag was really warm.
09:34See?
09:35I'm green.
09:36We'll see how Lauren did.
09:39I think she's still kind of snoozing, but we'll check in with her in a little bit.
09:45How did you sleep?
10:01Good.
10:02What's your first impressions of camping in 32 degree weather?
10:06It was good.
10:07It was good.
10:08We were comfortable.
10:10It was our first time sleeping outside, so I feel like every time I heard noises I got
10:14a little freaked out, but I'm bundled up.
10:17Honestly, it felt cozy.
10:18It felt nice, so.
10:19Next time we'll just work on the sleeping pad.
10:22It deflated.
10:23Yeah.
10:24Our air mattress.
10:25Which we should have known.
10:26Is completely deflated, so.
10:29We have a moving blanket like under the tent and our sleeping bags are pretty padded,
10:34but once that air mattress went out, it got pretty sad.
10:40Success.
10:41Next time, we'll do it in a national park for three days.
10:45Canned food, backpacking style.
10:47That's a big promise.
10:48Just wait.
10:52Awesome.
10:57Good?
10:58Yeah.
10:59Alright, we got all the ingredients for this morning's breakfast.
11:03We're making some green chilequiles.
11:05Got some green chili enchilada sauce, fire roasted corn, some rotel, crema, cojita cheese,
11:12cilantro, eggs, and tortilla chips.
11:15And a lime.
11:18Alright.
11:19Now we're gonna scoop this up into our bowl and give it some toppings.
11:24My bowl still smells like curry.
11:28Curry chilequile combo.
11:30Breakfast chilequiles.
11:32Time to see if it tastes as delicious as it looks.
11:42And the answer is yes.
11:4310 out of 10.
11:45The perfect yolk.
11:46It's just a little runny.
11:49Hot.
11:51I'm really good, my wife can cook.
11:53And I can eat.
11:54Go me.
11:55All done.
11:56Not time to clean up.
11:57Alright, we just finished our first camping trip.
12:09Lauren, how do you feel?
12:10Good.
12:11Good.
12:12It was a great trip.
12:13So, we're signing off, but we'll see you in the next one.
12:16If you are interested, the camping gear we bought and liked is linked in the description
12:20below.
12:21Please subscribe as we travel down to Peru to hike the Inca Trail.
