00:00Today we are exploring Vatican City. So we are going to go to the Vatican Museum,
00:05Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter's Basilica. We are going to try to fit in some bites for lunch. We
00:12have a really good pizza spot picked out after we have a cooking class booked at 430. We're going
00:17to make some pasta, some tiramisu. I've got a really busy day. While we accomplished everything
00:23we set out to see, the day definitely could have gone smoother. So while we take you through our
00:27day today, we're going to make sure to call out the mistakes we made so you can avoid them.
00:32Before hours of museum, basilica, and chapel tours, I need some coffee.
00:42I got this pastry with lemon and almond in it. All right, we're getting some food in there and
00:50then we're going to head towards the Vatican. Let's go. We are in the queue to go into Vatican City.
00:55So we are in a line for our ticket at 10 a.m. Hopefully we don't have to wait very long,
01:00but we shall see. We're very confused. We waited too long to book our tickets and so the actual
01:04Vatican Museum tickets were sold out and so we booked through a tour company. But then we
01:10had to go across the street. I don't know.
01:11We got our tickets. Get us out of this mess, please. It is busy. I think we bought our tickets
01:23through like a tour guide, but we didn't have a tour. However, they're the ones that get your
01:27tickets. So you're in a herd of like 200 people, but you're relying on this one person to get your
01:31ticket for you. So all in all, it really wasn't that bad, but it's like 30 minutes. Now we're
01:35headed into the Vatican. Everything's okay. The ancient bronze pine cone is where we're
01:41going to start this tour. The Vatican Museums, the glories of the ancient world displayed in
01:46a lavish papal palace decorated by the likes of Michelangelo and Raphael.
01:51We spent about an hour admiring the collections within the Vatican Museums. In truth, we probably
02:08would have spent longer if we could, but it was very crowded and they keep the crowd moving
02:12at a pretty steady pace through the museum. The grand finale of the Vatican Museums are the
02:17Raphael rooms, which leads you straight to the Sistine Chapel. The Sistine Chapel was probably
02:23one of the most amazing pieces of art we've ever seen in our lives. But unfortunately, you are not
02:29allowed to take photos or videos in the Sistine Chapel. It all comes down to money. In 1980, a
02:37restoration effort was funded by the Nippon Television Network Corporation of Japan. And as a
02:42result, Nippon gained exclusive rights. The contract actually expired, but to protect
02:47the art from flash photography, they left the ban in effect.
02:54My brain actually can't comprehend everything we just saw and learned in there and I'm in
03:06information overload. Garrett immediately stopped and got this poke bowl that he's eating behind
03:11me. But as per usual, he went the healthy route and I'm looking for pizza. Let's go find some.
03:16So we're going to this pizza place. Lauren does a very good job of researching food, places
03:21to go eat in every city we go to. You can always tell because there's always a long line at all the places she picks.
03:29So this is where traveling becomes a bit of a game of weighing your opportunity costs. Today is our last day in Rome.
03:35Hopefully we pass our COVID test later. We're running out of time. We have a cooking class scheduled for 4.30.
03:41It's 2 o'clock. We're standing in line for this pizza place. It's moving slow. And so the question becomes, do we wait in this line?
03:50Or do we go to St. Peter's Basilica? Or do we attempt to do both? Sitting here going back and forth and back and forth.
03:57Do we stay in this line to go get to another line? What if we leave this line and we don't get the pizza?
04:01And then we get to St. Peter's Basilica and we can't get in. We don't get to do anything.
04:04So we're just going back and forth and still trying to figure out what we're going to do.
04:13An hour later, we have our food and I have a soupli. They had all kinds of souplis in there.
04:20Like it looked wild. They had like carbonara, like ragu.
04:24Every pasta imaginable, it seemed like they had it in a fried ball.
04:27This is it on the outside. It feels very crunchy.
04:30Close up.
04:34It is basically fried spaghetti.
04:39That's pretty good.
04:40And now, the moment we have all been waiting for.
04:42I got a little wild when I went in there.
04:44And I got a lot.
04:45I have a classic pomodoro, tomato, fungi, mushroom, basil.
04:49I have a sausage and artichoke.
04:51Honestly, I just went in there and after standing in that line for an hour,
04:55I wanted to try everything.
04:57I wasn't going to just get like one little slice of pizza.
04:59Sausage and artichoke.
05:02Start with that one.
05:05Classic tomato, basil, and mushroom.
05:11Wow, wow, wow. This is fantastic.
05:13Fantastic.
05:15We are headed to at least try to explore a little bit of the Vatican City Square
05:19before we head to our cooking class.
05:21Lauren is walking and eating her pizza dangerously close to the cooking class,
05:25but it looks good.
05:27She just might be a little full.
05:29St. Peter's Basilica.
05:31Be aware that there's a strictly enforced dress code to get into St. Peter's.
05:35And, unless you arrive very early or late in the day,
05:38long security lines can be a problem.
05:40That's the security entrance, and this is the line.
05:48My biggest piece of advice if you're planning to visit Vatican City,
05:52you know, St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel,
05:56is to book a tour.
05:58There's a lot of tours that will let you in early.
06:01They will do, like, before open hours.
06:04They'll get you access.
06:05There's really no lines.
06:06Today was, it wasn't a bad day.
06:09I think it just didn't live up to our expectations.
06:11Honestly, we've been having a really, really good trip.
06:13Everything was, like, coming up aces.
06:15And so, you know, if something had to go wrong, I mean, this is it.
06:19But we are definitely not going to make it into St. Peter's Basilica.
06:22I think, honestly, we planned a lot in the first half of our trip.
06:24And then, by the time we started thinking about the last day,
06:26we just had lost steam.
06:28So, it is what it is.
06:29It's a bummer, but we're still going to take in Vatican City
06:31and enjoy what we can.
06:33I'm really stressing Garrett out by making him get in this line.
06:36But, we saw that the line was moving super quick,
06:39and it's looking like we might actually get a peek of St. Peter's Basilica.
06:42Are you nodding yes because I'm making you anxious?
06:44We're going to have to sprint.
06:45I take back all my negative thoughts, all my negative vibes.
06:48This is really cool.
06:49We're going to get to see it very quickly,
06:51and then we're going to probably run as fast as possible for this cooking class.
06:54So, it should be fun.
06:56St. Peter's is the greatest church in Christendom.
06:59Built on the memory and grave of the first pope, St. Peter,
07:03this is where the grandeur of ancient Rome
07:05became the grandeur of Christianity.
07:08It's impossible to capture the scale of St. Peter's,
07:16but even if you've been to 100 cathedrals in Europe,
07:19this one will still take your breath away.
07:21They can't see us.
07:22Got to give the pope a wave.
07:24I was being really dramatic earlier.
07:26You definitely don't need a tour.
07:28You could do it by yourself.
07:29Rick Steves, 10 out of 10 once again.
07:32Maybe just do a little better time management than we did.
07:36Power walking.
07:37Going to try not to be late.
07:38We're pretty close.
07:40Despite all this rushing around,
07:42we were actually one of the first people to arrive.
07:44So, we had time to enjoy a welcome drink and a quick snack
07:47before jumping in to make tiramisu.
07:51It's about five minutes.
07:52No mussel, man.
08:01Look at that.
08:03It doesn't look very appetizing.
08:05Maybe don't serve it.
08:06With our tiramisu in the fridge to set,
08:09we got our hands dirty making pasta.
08:11Start to beat everything together.
08:14One mix and one with the flour.
08:16I'm just kind of sorry.
08:17You're doing great.
08:18Right?
08:19Like you're doing a mountain of pasta.
08:21So, pick it up a little flour,
08:23wash your hands,
08:24a little bit.
08:25Wash your hands with the flour on the dough.
08:26Like this.
08:27Wash, okay?
08:28Then you keep going.
08:29Okay?
08:30So, fold and fold.
08:33Ow!
08:40Time to get this one.
08:42Looking like that one.
08:46Did you give it a little pat for good measure?
08:48Next, we made the hand-cut fettuccine.
08:51You have a knife, remember?
09:04And then some ravioli.
09:06Finished product.
09:07My carbonara.
09:08And Garrett got his with the pesto.
09:09Everyone else is still eating.
09:23Now we get to try our ravioli.
09:25With very full bellies, we set off for one last nighttime stroll through Rome before heading home.
09:37One of those lucky moments when Google Maps just happens to route you down a beautiful bridge at night.
09:43We're crossing the Bridge de San Angelo or the San Angelo Bridge.
09:48The castle of San Angelo.
09:50Behind us.
09:51The Vatican over there.
09:53And it's truly a beautiful stroll home.
09:56It's creepy life going wild up there.
10:00Seriously, no better way to end this trip than with a nice drink with some snacks with a view.
