00:00Former MP Maria Chin Abdullah has opposed the move to allow the suspects in the gang
00:05group of a teenage girl to sit for their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia exams.
00:09Maria said while it was right to expel the four students involved, they can take their
00:13exams only after the trial ends or from prison if they're found guilty.
00:18Maria, who is with a community NGO called Martabat PJ, said talk about the suspect
00:22sitting for their exams had shifted the public debate and awareness away from a very horrible
00:27act of violence.
00:28She added that efforts should instead go towards supporting the survivor and changing
00:32mindsets to end gender-based violence.
00:35Maria said society should also commit to ensuring that children grow up able to share the values
00:40of respect and dignity with one another.
00:43She said society often fails survivors because of poor understanding of the emotional and
00:47psychological trauma caused by violence, urging schools, parents, and the education ministry
00:52to work together to create safe spaces for students.
00:55Yesterday, Education Director General Azam Ahmad said the four Form 5 students allegedly evolved
01:01in the gang group of a Form 3 girl at a school in Malacca had been expelled.
