00:00Hello and welcome to Bargain Hunt.
00:04Perfect. You know, I've always been a huge fan of upcycling.
00:08It's a great way to kit out your home on a budget in a way that's both stylish and sustainable.
00:15But back in 1945, one man led the way long before it became fashionable.
00:21When World War II ended and materials were in short supply,
00:25a British designer pioneered a way to turn wartime scraps
00:29into some seriously cool furniture. I'll be revealing who he is later.
00:34But it's time now to see if today's teams can craft some profits.
00:38Let's go bargain hunting.
00:59It's all to play for as today's teams hunt for bargains at this huge antiques fair in Ardingline.
01:08Our teams have just 60 minutes but a budget of £300 to find three items here at the fair.
01:15One must cost at the very least £75.
01:18And of course they'll have to complete my challenge.
01:21Whoever makes the bigger profit or smaller loss at auction will win.
01:25Let's meet today's teams.
01:27Hi, I'm Dilly. I'm Reena.
01:30We're in Laws on a Mission.
01:32That's the spirit. So, how long have you known each other?
01:35Been in your family now for well over 20 years, shockingly.
01:39What are you into?
01:41I like everything.
01:42She's torn. You're a magpie.
01:44You're just torn to everything.
01:46Who'll be in charge?
01:48Me.
01:50This could be interesting. Let's meet your opponents.
01:54I'm Pat.
01:55And I'm Charlotte.
01:56When it comes to haggling, it's go hard or go home.
01:59Sounds like you mean business.
02:01Do you get on?
02:03Very well.
02:04We get on really, really well together.
02:06Will you make a good team?
02:07Of course.
02:08We're hoping so.
02:09I'll tell her what to do.
02:11Yeah.
02:12Are you here to win?
02:14We are very competitive.
02:15We are here for the golden gavel.
02:17That's all we want from today.
02:18We don't care whether we make a pound or a hundred pounds.
02:21We just want the golden gavel.
02:22Both teams are fired up.
02:23So, let's get started.
02:26Well, hi, teams.
02:27Hi, it's actually nice to meet you.
02:29Oh, it's so lovely to meet you too.
02:31That is the energy I'm looking for in bargain hunt teams.
02:35You are so ready for this.
02:36Absolutely.
02:37Yes.
02:38Who made these earrings?
02:39My son.
02:40On his 3D printer.
02:41Oh my goodness.
02:42He is so, so good.
02:43So, are you jewellery hawks?
02:44We are indeed.
02:45Gold.
02:46Gold.
02:47Yes.
02:48Okay.
02:49Now, your budget is limited because you're to buy three items and I'm going to give you
02:54300 pounds.
02:55So, who's taking it for the reds?
02:56I'm taking the money.
02:57And who's taking the money for the blues?
02:58I'm not trusted.
02:59Okay.
03:00Mum, you're in charge.
03:01She spends too easily.
03:02Right.
03:03That means that, Rena, you have the challenge.
03:05Charlotte, a challenge for you.
03:06Thank you, Sasha.
03:07But don't open them just yet because, of course, it's time to meet your experts.
03:10Yes.
03:11So keen to meet them.
03:12Yes.
03:13Off you go.
03:15They're experts.
03:16But what do they think makes a good one?
03:18Somebody who'll keep us on our toes.
03:20Somebody who's up for a good laugh.
03:22Someone who likes shiny things.
03:24Someone who's got our sense of humour.
03:25That's it, really.
03:26I think...
03:27Well, I think today you've hit the track.
03:29For the reds, it's Danny Sebastian.
03:32Oh, sure.
03:33It's in Patricia.
03:34I'll do my best.
03:35Lovely to meet you.
03:36And for the blues, it's Kate Bliss.
03:39Time to reveal those challenges.
03:41An item with a connection to animals.
03:43Oh, my gosh.
03:44An item that makes a sound.
03:47Ooh.
03:48It's going to be fun.
03:49Time to get ahead, teams.
03:52Your 60 minutes start now.
03:54We're off.
03:55Let's do this.
03:56Come on, let's go.
03:57Come on, let's go.
03:58The teams are off.
03:59And straight away, the blues have seen something that could beat my challenge.
04:04Look at that.
04:05Let's attach the light.
04:06Well, definitely making a noise there, Kate.
04:10Yeah.
04:11Yeah.
04:12So they're ship spells, aren't they?
04:13Are they?
04:14Because we've got port and starboard.
04:15But that's new, isn't it?
04:16The esky.
04:17I think the red is...
04:18Have I got that right?
04:20The red...
04:21Is starboard, isn't it?
04:22Is starboard.
04:23Yeah.
04:24And the green, or the greeny blue in this case, is the port.
04:27How old are they, though, do you think, Charlotte?
04:29I don't know.
04:30I mean...
04:31They're heavy.
04:32I think they must be brass.
04:34Yeah.
04:35They look brass, don't they?
04:36Those look much newer and we've got an electrical fitting there.
04:40A new electrical lighting.
04:41And then there's this...
04:42Because they've been...
04:43I think we put them down.
04:44They've been converted.
04:45How much are they?
04:46450.
04:47Oh!
04:48They are beautiful, though.
04:49Okay.
04:50That would be a big spin.
04:51Absolutely.
04:52More on a big spin.
04:53You'd certainly be hitting the high notes there.
04:55Reds, what have you spotted?
04:57Oh!
04:58Oh!
04:59Oh!
05:00Now that's...
05:01It's a corkscrew!
05:02Oh, that's awesome.
05:03Oh, I'd love that.
05:04Would that...
05:05Would that do well in auction?
05:06Well, I think it's a little bit different, isn't it?
05:09It's a little bit quirky.
05:10It's quite nice.
05:11I think...
05:12Look at his eyes.
05:13And it's got little glass eyes, I think.
05:15Yeah.
05:16I like it, but I'm not sure if it would do well.
05:18Shall we get a prize?
05:19Fifteen would be the absolute death on that.
05:22Just...
05:23Just examine it.
05:24Have a bit of look at it.
05:25I mean, is it...
05:26I like it, but I'm not...
05:27I don't know how others would perceive it in auction, if it's something that...
05:32Is it like a collectible?
05:33It is collectible.
05:34It's a collectible.
05:35It's a collectible, is it?
05:36People who collect corkscrews.
05:37Oh, really?
05:38Yeah, but there is...
05:39It's quite a market for it.
05:40I quite like it, Rena, because it's a bit different.
05:42Well, this is quite early on.
05:44Shall we put it on the back burner for now?
05:46Is that okay?
05:47We might be back.
05:48Yeah, that's fine.
05:49Well, I think we've just started.
05:50Let's have a bit of a walk around and have a look.
05:53Okay.
05:54Good find, Reds.
05:56Now, what's caught Charlotte's eye?
05:57It means a corgi bus for Dad.
05:59So, your Dad was a bus driver?
06:00He was, and a bus inspector.
06:01Yes.
06:02Oh, was he?
06:03Yeah.
06:04Brilliant.
06:05Oh, well, maybe we can find a little...
06:06That's a little Leslie, I think, probably, because it's a little small one.
06:09Yep, Leslie.
06:10Yeah.
06:11Yeah.
06:12What does that say on it?
06:13British...
06:14British European Airways.
06:15Oh, okay.
06:16So, one that was used at the airports.
06:19Little bit play-worn.
06:20It's got a little bit of painting.
06:21It is, and on the back as well here.
06:22Yeah.
06:23So, it's actually probably a little bit of just blue, blue.
06:25Drew my eye to it.
06:26It's nice.
06:27I wonder if it might maybe struggle on its own just because it's a little bit worn at auction.
06:31Yeah, absolutely.
06:32That's a nice thing.
06:33That one's a little bit later.
06:34Mm.
06:35Got to be careful with these dinkies because some of them are...
06:37They don't need to be old.
06:38Well, some of them have been repainted.
06:40Ah.
06:41And, um...
06:42Ah, yes, you can see that one.
06:43That one, I think, is a case in hand.
06:45Can you see the paint's a little bit pulled there?
06:46I can, yes.
06:47Dinky would never have released that like that.
06:49So, you've got to be a little bit careful because for collectors that's an absolute no-no and would kill it dead.
06:54What about the James Bond gold knife?
06:56I know, I was just looking at that.
06:58The Aston Martin DB5.
07:00That is boxed.
07:01It is.
07:02So, this is quite late though.
07:04So, is it?
07:05Not too bad, is it?
07:06Do you fancy that?
07:07I do quite like it.
07:08Shall I ask?
07:09Well, we can find out how much it is, can't we?
07:10Absolutely.
07:11While the Blues find a price, the Reds are hunting for their animal challenge.
07:16Look at this.
07:17What about something like this?
07:18What is it?
07:19I think it's a weight or some description.
07:22What do you think?
07:23It's not really grabbing me, to be honest.
07:25I mean, you know, is it a paperweight?
07:27Is it a doorstop?
07:28No, it's hard to say.
07:30I think, I think, if we're going to get something that's got this connection to animals, we're
07:36going to have to make sure that we get it right.
07:38Yes, true.
07:39That's for sure.
07:40I mean, it's obviously got a connection to an animal because it's a...
07:42It's an animal head.
07:43Yeah, it's an animal head.
07:44It's a fox.
07:45What are you thinking, Dilly?
07:46You're not keen on it, are you?
07:47I'm not keen on it.
07:48Billy's not keen.
07:49We'll put it back.
07:50The fox doesn't get the team vote.
07:53Any luck with the price on the car, Blues?
07:56It's £25, Kate.
07:57£25.
07:58Yeah, see, it's lovely.
07:59It is.
08:00But I think it's not going to make us a profit at that.
08:03Just because it's very late.
08:04Absolutely.
08:05You know, relatively modern, is what I mean by late.
08:07Let's go and find something old.
08:08All right.
08:09Like us.
08:10Or like me.
08:11Lovely.
08:12The Reds are heading back for the corkscrew they saw earlier.
08:16Hi.
08:17Hi.
08:18We're back.
08:19I do really like this, but I think we could bring it down for maybe a tenner.
08:24Oh, Lord.
08:25Twelve.
08:26Twelve?
08:27What do you reckon?
08:28Eleven.
08:29Go on.
08:30You know you love us.
08:31Go on, tenner then.
08:32Tenner.
08:33Tenner.
08:34Tenner.
08:35Thank you, Dan.
08:36Absolutely brilliant.
08:37Thank you so much.
08:38Fantastic.
08:40You're a star.
08:41I'll take that.
08:43That's how it's done, Reds.
08:45The dog corkscrew is your first buy and meets my animal challenge.
08:49Yes, guys, we're on that one.
08:52Where are we going next?
08:53This way?
08:54Let's go that way.
08:55The Reds stride on.
08:57And the Blues are jewellery shopping.
09:00We want something that's going to really appeal to quite a few people.
09:04We don't want anything too niche.
09:07We want something that's quite commercial.
09:09Right.
09:10Like?
09:11These are a little bit old fashioned, some of them.
09:14So the belt is after a Victorian style, but you've got a lovely diamond in there.
09:18That's set with paste by the look of things, but it's got a bit of an Art Deco look to it.
09:22You don't like the paste?
09:23Looks cheap.
09:24OK.
09:25OK.
09:26OK.
09:27That will be a no then.
09:28That'll be a no.
09:29Speak your mind, Pat.
09:31What's tempting you, Reds?
09:34This is stunning.
09:36What do you think?
09:37Do you like it?
09:38I do.
09:39I think it's so unusual.
09:41Yeah.
09:42This is like my kind of stuff.
09:44Very nice.
09:45It looks like burr walnut top.
09:46You've got all this inlay here.
09:48Yeah.
09:49This is quite nice.
09:50There's some great craftsmanship gone into it.
09:52It really is.
09:53Even like the legwork and everything.
09:55There's no damage.
09:56I'm just having a quick look.
09:57There's no damage.
09:58Nice cast.
09:59It looks kind of Victorian.
10:00Yeah.
10:01Do you think it's worth $180?
10:03Oh, no.
10:04Well, it wouldn't want to be $180 to go to auction.
10:07Oh, no.
10:08I don't think I would pay.
10:10No.
10:11I think if you like it, we can negotiate.
10:13I mean, it's a lovely table.
10:15I'll tell you what.
10:16Let me go and ask the chap what's his best prices.
10:19You keep on admiring and I'll just...
10:21OK.
10:22Yep.
10:24While Danny talks numbers, Kate's playing catch up.
10:27I lost you.
10:28Yes, we lost you.
10:29Wacky.
10:30Oh, that is wacky.
10:31But is £85 wacky?
10:32We don't know what it is.
10:33Is it worth £85?
10:34We don't know what it is.
10:35It's just weird.
10:36I'm not sure how commercial it is.
10:37Crikey, it's heavy.
10:38Exactly.
10:39It's heavy, heavy.
10:40It's bronze, apparently.
10:41I'm not quite sure whether it would appeal to the wider market.
10:45Better move on, then.
10:47Any news on the table, Danny?
10:49Well, I've spoke to the gentleman.
10:51Yeah.
10:52I mean, it's in great condition.
10:54Yes, that is.
10:55The best he can do is 140.
10:57It's a safe bet.
10:58It's a safe bet.
10:59But maybe we should keep looking, because we're still quite early on, wasn't we?
11:02We've still got a bit of time, haven't we?
11:03Yes.
11:04We'll keep it in mind.
11:05OK.
11:06We'll see what else is out there.
11:07Just in case.
11:08Yes.
11:09OK, let's go.
11:10That is put for now.
11:11Back to Kate, who's rallying her blues.
11:13Ladies.
11:16Calling us over.
11:18There's a baby bell.
11:19So we've got a little brass table bell here, which is quite nice.
11:23It's got, well, some signs of the zodiac on it.
11:25Nice, actually.
11:26We've got a pelican in there as well.
11:28But Leo, rather nicely cast.
11:33It's not, the lady's got it priced at 12.
11:36OK.
11:37And has kindly said she will do it for eight.
11:40Yes.
11:41You're nice.
11:42It's quite a nice little decorative piece.
11:44I mean, it is quite affordable, but I quite like that.
11:47It brings well.
11:48That would sort our noise.
11:49That's our noise.
11:50I like that.
11:51And it's got a good weight to it.
11:52It does, right?
11:53It's a really nice weight to it.
11:55That's going to be much lighter than that.
11:57And people do collect sperm.
11:59Well, it would do our challenge.
12:02I'm just conscious.
12:03Absolutely.
12:04No, that's good.
12:05I've acted a bell, so that's perfect.
12:07What would you like to pay for it?
12:09Five would be better, but I'll be very kind.
12:11They can have it for five.
12:12Oh, wow.
12:14With 35 minutes on the clock, you're saved by the bell, blues.
12:18And your first buy takes off my item that makes a sound challenge.
12:22Let's have a look at the challenge.
12:23Thank you very much.
12:24My pleasure.
12:25Brilliant.
12:26OK, onwards.
12:27And upwards.
12:29What have you found, Reds?
12:30I wonder if this is a pair with...
12:32I think there is, yeah.
12:33Because this one hasn't got a price on it.
12:35It looks like it's...
12:36Well, there's 35 pounds it's got on it.
12:40Yeah, but this one hasn't, so I'm assuming it's a pair.
12:43I wonder if we can find out.
12:45What do you reckon, Rena?
12:46I mean, it's really pretty.
12:47I think it would look lovely on, like, a fireplace or something, wouldn't it?
12:51Yeah.
12:52This kind of lustre wear.
12:53I think you've just got to be careful, you know, where it's got...
12:55Oh.
12:56As you see, there's quite a bit of wear on it.
12:58Yeah.
12:59And they'll pick that up, won't they?
13:00Down the bottom.
13:01Well, it just kind of comes across as a bit of an imperfection.
13:04But, I mean, they're nice.
13:06There's no chips.
13:07Marlin.
13:08How do you think that would do?
13:10Well, 35 for the pair.
13:11It just depends on what we can get it for.
13:13There's the governor.
13:14What would be your best price for that?
13:1630.
13:17How much?
13:1830.
13:1930...
13:20No, I don't think we...
13:21No.
13:22No.
13:2320 for the pair?
13:24Why not?
13:25I think you've got a chance.
13:2619, so we'd definitely make a profit.
13:27All right.
13:28If you want another pound, that's cool.
13:29A pound for luck, that's cool.
13:30Yeah.
13:31I mean, I would have said about 15, to be honest.
13:33Okay.
13:34Oh, even worse.
13:35I would have done.
13:36I would have said about 15.
13:37Go on, then.
13:3815.
13:39Go 17.
13:40Compromise.
13:41All right, we'll compromise.
13:42I'll go with it.
13:43Sure.
13:44Thank you very much.
13:45I think you'll be all right.
13:46What's the worst you can lose?
13:47That's true.
13:48Nicely done, ladies.
13:50So, we've bought two items.
13:52We've got 25 minutes left.
13:54We've got a lot of money.
13:56Yes.
13:57But we haven't got a plan.
13:58No.
13:59The Reds are winging it.
14:00And you, Blues.
14:01These are really fun.
14:03Oh, yeah.
14:04I quite like those.
14:05So, this is just...
14:06It's Japanese in design.
14:08Just a little bit different.
14:09Pepperette.
14:10It's a little cruet set, really.
14:11You've got pepperette and a little mustard and a spoon there.
14:15What do you think of that?
14:16That's quite sweet, isn't it?
14:17Yeah.
14:18Can we have a little look at that?
14:19Different.
14:20How much is that?
14:21The retail on them is 125.
14:23I'd be open to an offer.
14:25Yeah.
14:26So, they're sterling standard.
14:28Little.
14:29And the spoon comes with it as well.
14:31It's not even chipped, is it?
14:32It's in good...
14:33It's in good...
14:34So, you've got 125 on them, have you?
14:36What's the best on those?
14:38I'd do them for 75 for you.
14:40You could do 75.
14:41That's fantastic.
14:42That's good.
14:43I mean, it sounds like a lot of money for just a two-piece cruet,
14:46but it's the design which is going to make it...
14:49It's the quality as well.
14:50Yeah, it is.
14:51It's quite great, isn't it?
14:52It's got into making that piece in particular.
14:54Yeah.
14:55Does it matter that there's not?
14:56All that has been beautifully chased
14:58with those lovely sort of Japanese leaves, aren't they?
15:01Sort of palmit-shaped.
15:03And it's got its container.
15:04Yeah.
15:05It's little blue glass.
15:06Is that little blue glass?
15:07Yes.
15:08Liner.
15:09Lovely.
15:10Japanese silver is selling very well at the moment,
15:12particularly with slightly more interesting designs.
15:15It's super quality.
15:17What do we think?
15:18I like it.
15:19It's quirky.
15:20And I like it.
15:21I wanted quirky.
15:22Yeah.
15:23It was part of what I was after today, so it really works.
15:24And I think because it's complete, it's got its glass liner as well.
15:26Absolutely.
15:27I think we're on for winner.
15:28Well, I think we've got a deal.
15:29We do.
15:30Yep, that's a deal.
15:31We've got agreement.
15:32We do.
15:33Wonderful.
15:34Thank you very much indeed.
15:35Can you take your hand?
15:36Amazing.
15:37Thank you very much.
15:38Well done, Meggies.
15:39That's your second buy and your big spend in the bag.
15:42Good work, Blues.
15:43Brilliant.
15:44That's number two.
15:45Number two.
15:46Right.
15:47We've got about ten minutes.
15:48Let's do this.
15:49While Kate drives her team on, what's taking your fancy, Rina?
15:53Oh, I love this one.
15:54Can I have a look?
15:55Which one?
15:56This one here.
15:57What do you think?
15:58Well, this is quite nice.
16:00There's a lot going on here, isn't there?
16:01Yeah.
16:02So I suppose what you've got is you've got a lovely little table
16:04and that's the size of it.
16:05But if you want a little bit more room, then you just pull up the...
16:10Yeah, I think.
16:11Oh, there it is, yeah.
16:12Yeah.
16:13Which just makes it a little bit bigger.
16:14It's not very stable though, is it?
16:15Well, it's on turf.
16:17It's on...
16:18No, no, I meant...
16:19It's quite nice.
16:20I mean, it's...
16:21So it's Victorian.
16:23Yeah.
16:24Yeah.
16:25It's got this kind of ebonised finish to it.
16:30It's priced up at £185.
16:34I think my heart is on the other table.
16:36OK.
16:37Let's go for the other table.
16:38Well, thank you very much for your time.
16:41We might be back because we're deliberating.
16:43We're deliberating.
16:44Thank you very much.
16:45Thank you very much.
16:46Thank you very much.
16:48Where was the other table though?
16:49Good luck, Reds.
16:51And with just over five minutes left,
16:53it's back to you, Blues.
16:55I quite like the pillbox at the back,
16:56but I'm not sure if they're...
16:58They're plated, aren't they?
16:59Yeah, if they're not silver.
17:00No, these are silver.
17:02I think this one's plated,
17:03but I think that one's silver
17:04because this one's marked.
17:06It's got a sovereign case there.
17:07That's quite nice.
17:08You can see the hallmark there.
17:10This is spring-loaded,
17:11so you depress it down,
17:13slide your coin in,
17:15and it holds it in place.
17:16And would very often have been worn
17:18in a little watch chain, perhaps,
17:20which is why it's got the little suspension ring there.
17:22So you'd wear it and keep your sovereign safe on your person.
17:26How many can you get in there?
17:27Quite a few.
17:28Can you?
17:29Yeah.
17:30So do sovereign cases sell?
17:31Well, they're interesting
17:32because they are appealing to silver collectors
17:35because this is English hallmarked silver,
17:37but they're also collectable for coin collectors.
17:40That is a particularly nice plain one.
17:42Normally they're engraved or they have initials on them,
17:45and that's absolutely plain.
17:47How much is that one?
17:49Well, I'm on 50 quid for it.
17:51For you, 25 quid.
17:53Ooh.
17:54Would you do it for 24?
17:55Yeah.
17:56We'd make a profit on 24?
17:58I would hope so.
18:00A little Victorian plain sovereign case.
18:02Sure.
18:03I would seriously hope so.
18:05Are you happy?
18:06I like that.
18:07Do you?
18:08It's plain simple.
18:09We've gone magpie and we've really bought three.
18:11Let's show anything.
18:12What are we going to do, then?
18:13We're taking it.
18:14Let's check the general's hand.
18:15Patricia's in charge.
18:1624?
18:17Yeah, we're happy.
18:18Wonderful.
18:19Thank you so much.
18:22Bravo, Blues.
18:23The sovereign case is your third and final die.
18:26I don't know about you, but I'm just asking for a cup of tea.
18:28Absolutely.
18:29Let's do it.
18:30Definitely.
18:31Meanwhile, the Reds are in search of an elusive table.
18:35Why have you left it so late?
18:37It's so nice.
18:39Have we found it?
18:40No.
18:41No.
18:42Where was it?
18:43How long's left?
18:44Less than four minutes, Danny.
18:45Found it.
18:46Yes.
18:47Found it.
18:48I'll tell you what, you're worried me that I'm not sure.
18:52It's a nice table.
18:53It definitely is.
18:54Yeah?
18:55Yeah, it's like a walnut.
18:56Yes.
18:57Do you want to see what you can get it down for?
18:59What's your absolute death?
19:01140?
19:02Well, er...
19:03I'll tell you what, 135?
19:05That would be my absolute best because my husband said 140.
19:08I mean, could you do 120?
19:10130.
19:11That's right.
19:12Do it.
19:13We're running out of time.
19:14We'll do 125.
19:16We'll do 125 with you.
19:18Cash.
19:19Go on then.
19:20Go on then.
19:21125, 125.
19:22Brilliant.
19:23Awesome.
19:24Thank you so much.
19:25Oh, Billy, you're the mess about, do you?
19:27125.
19:29Oh, what a pleasure.
19:30Thanks very much.
19:31Red's with just three minutes to spare.
19:33The walnut table is your final die and meets the big spend.
19:37Sheer perfection.
19:38That's it, teams.
19:40The shopping's done.
19:41We cut it to the wire, didn't we?
19:42We did, team.
19:43Thank you very much.
19:44Oh, let's go and get a cold drink or something.
19:46Come on.
19:47Let's remind ourselves what the red team bought.
19:51The carved wooden dog with interior corkscrew
19:54met my item with a connection to animals challenge
19:57for just £10.
19:59Next was the pair of mailing vases.
20:02Price paid, £17.
20:05Finally, the Victorian walnut occasional table
20:08was their big spend at £125.
20:12Reena, Dilly, you did it with Danny by your side.
20:16Danny, you learned a thing or two about haggling.
20:18Oh!
20:19Dilly's one at best.
20:20Absolutely incredible work, ladies.
20:22Tell me, first of all, which is your favourite item, Reena?
20:25Oh, I'd have to say the table, definitely.
20:28I loved the table.
20:29The big spend.
20:30Which is going to bring the biggest profits?
20:32Oh, I think it's going to be the dog corkscrew.
20:35I think it's going to be a little cheeky one.
20:37Dilly, now tell me, which is your favourite?
20:39The vases.
20:40The vases.
20:41OK, no challenge attached to those, but a good bit of haggling.
20:44Yes.
20:45But which, Dilly, will bring the biggest profits?
20:47Again, I think, like Reena says, the dog.
20:50OK, we know that you have £148 in your pocket, Dilly.
20:53Yeah.
20:54So please hand it over to Danny.
20:56Danny, there we go.
20:57Thanking you.
20:58Danny, can they trust you with such a big budget?
21:01Well, let's just say, um, I hope I don't get stitched up.
21:05Oh.
21:06Oh.
21:07OK.
21:08Danny's off to find a bonus buy for the Reds, but let's remind ourselves now what the blue team bought.
21:13First, the brass bell met my something-that-makes-a-sound challenge and cost just £5.
21:20Next was their big spend, the Japanese silver cruet set in the form of a lantern for £75.
21:27And the late 19th century silver sovereign case completed their shop.
21:32£24 paid.
21:34Pat, Charlotte, Kate, you've done it.
21:37You've hardly spent any money, but you've done it.
21:40Did you feel good wandering around the fair?
21:42Did your earrings bring you luck?
21:43Absolutely.
21:44Oh, definitely.
21:45You bought three items, Pat.
21:46It's always hard, but can you choose a favourite?
21:49I think the sovereign case is my favourite.
21:51Oh, interesting.
21:52So why is that?
21:53It's very plain and simple and it's understated, but it's lovely.
21:56So do you think it will bring the biggest profit?
21:58I'm hoping so.
21:59OK, so you're backing the sovereign case all the way?
22:02Yes, yes, all the way.
22:03Right, OK.
22:04Now, Charlotte, tell me, are you on the same page?
22:05Which is your favourite?
22:06My favourite, I think, because I really wanted quirky today, is the Japanese cruet set.
22:11Yeah.
22:12But I think the sovereign case is in it for the money.
22:14You didn't spend a huge amount of money, $104, which leaves Kate a huge sum.
22:19Pat, are you still in charge of the money?
22:20Oh, definitely.
22:21So you have $196 to hand over to Kate.
22:24I haven't had such a large amount for a long time.
22:27It's a huge budget.
22:29Spend it carefully.
22:30Spend it and double it for us.
22:31I have seen something.
22:32It's a little way away, so I've got to get my skates on.
22:35OK.
22:36Running shoes.
22:37Thanks, Kate.
22:38Yeah.
22:39So while Kate goes off in search of a bonus buy, I'm off to learn more about a true pioneer
22:43of mid-century furniture.
22:48After the Second World War, there was a real appetite to rebuild Britain and enjoy home comforts once again.
22:55And that's where this man came in.
22:57Designer Ernest Race introduced practical, affordable and comfortable furniture for the home.
23:03His sleek, elegant designs are still popular today.
23:07To learn more, I'm meeting John Schofield.
23:10John, you're the managing director here at Race Furniture, but it's not your name above the door.
23:15It's that of Ernest Race.
23:17So tell us, where did it all start?
23:19So Ernest Race, he's a Geordie by birth.
23:22Born 1913, just before the start of the First World War.
23:25And went through his education and then ended up in London at the Bartlett School of Architecture,
23:29where he graduated in interior design, and he started Race Fabrics in London.
23:34In terms from a furniture perspective, it was at the end of the Second World War,
23:37where he answered a call to arms to join up with other designers
23:40and at the request of the government and the design council
23:44to produce mass-produced furniture
23:47to go into all the new prefabricated houses that were acquired after the war
23:50and after all the houses that we lost.
23:52So it was the end of the war that was the catalyst for him to start designing furniture.
23:56Britain on its knees, financially, it must have been a really tough time for creators.
24:00So where did he source his raw materials?
24:03Traditionally, furniture had been made from wood.
24:05That was the material of choice.
24:07And obviously, as a result of the war, wood was at really short demand.
24:12He had the ingenious idea of utilising components and metal and materials from the Second World War
24:19and really, really driving that sort of up-cycling, if you will, thought process
24:25and philosophy.
24:26That's really smart. It really is. So what was his first design using these unusual means?
24:32Well, the first design was the BA chair that we have here.
24:35This was a chair that he designed. It was all about being easy to assemble.
24:39It was lightweight so that it could be transported easily.
24:41Out of necessity, a big part of the design concept came from utilising metals from old aeroplanes and munitions,
24:49but also the fabrics. The fabrics were, the very early chairs were utilising old RAF parachutes.
24:55It wasn't just the type of materials, it was the way he used them.
24:58So cast aluminium in furniture just didn't exist.
25:02So he was a real groundbreaker in there and polishing the aluminium as well to give it what we would call a utilitarian look now.
25:09But at the time was design and necessity, really.
25:12So yes, it was a game changer in many ways, not only in design but also in the materials that it used.
25:18Between sort of 1945 and 1960, 68, they sold about a quarter of a million, these worldwide.
25:25I mean, that's huge.
25:26And it's a phenomenal chair, you know, extremely comfortable and, yeah, it's still considered a classic now.
25:32These days this would set you back a few hundred pounds if you were to buy it on the open market.
25:37But what would it have cost at the time? Was this affordable?
25:41That was very much a part of it. The government was driving for affordability because everybody was coming off the back of the war.
25:46Basically getting people back on their feet so they could live their life.
25:50In 1951, the Festival of Britain was organised to boost the nation's morale.
25:55The perfect time and place for innovators and designers like Race to showcase their wares.
26:01So this is the antelope? This is the antelope, absolutely.
26:04And the big design feature there is that historically the metal frame would have been covered up.
26:09Whereas what Race did was tuck it and effectively put the skeleton on the outside.
26:13So he set the bar very high. Every aspect of this chair is interesting.
26:17So what happened next? I mean, did everyone want to work with him?
26:21Well, absolutely. I mean, you can imagine the exposure from the exhibition and the awareness of his design capabilities.
26:27And from there, he was very highly in demand. Part of the outcome from the Festival of Britain was he got commissioned to start making furniture for cruise liners.
26:36And obviously the people who were on cruise liners at that time would be the type of person that were looking for higher-end furniture for their own home.
26:43And that's where he tapped into that market.
26:46So this is the Heron from 1955. This would be developed to sit alongside the likes of the Eames chair at the time and other high-end soft furnishings.
26:56It's a phenomenal design. These chairs are still extremely desirable.
27:00Now, anyone who's looking to collect mid-century furniture, I'm sure you would sear them towards Race.
27:07So what would be your top tips? Any particular pieces? Any that are springing up in value?
27:12The Heron, obviously, is continuing to be a design classic, but sits so well in the modern world.
27:17Even one in disrepair is going to cost £1,000. But once it's refurbished, it will be £3,000 or £4,000.
27:24So if you can find one and you've got the ability to refurbish it, that's where the money's to be made.
27:29John, thank you very much for this potted history of Ernest Race's life and designs.
27:35I've genuinely enjoyed it and I will be keeping my eyes peeled for herons in bad condition.
27:41Absolute pleasure. Thank you, John.
27:43But it's time now, you know what I'm going to say, to race over to the auction.
27:50And today's auction is in Wiltshire.
27:53Almost time to see the items go under the hammer, but first we must chat with our auctioneer, Tim Weeks.
27:59Tim, are you ready? Born ready. Let's do it.
28:02Let's go straight in with the Reds, Dilly and Rina.
28:05They were paired with Danny Sebastian and they seemed delighted to fulfil my challenge,
28:10an item connected to animals with this little corkscrew.
28:14I love a bit of novelty when we come into the sale room.
28:16The fact that it's all together, you've got those little glass eyes.
28:19Bit of fun, isn't it? So I love it.
28:21I'm putting £25 to £40.
28:22£10 was paid.
28:23Yeah. I was hoping that would be the case.
28:25Yeah.
28:26We're going to move on to the vases.
28:27They're Malling, Newcastle upon Tyne.
28:29There's a pair of them which is nice, decorated with the grapes.
28:32I don't see much quality to it.
28:34I'll put £15 to £25.
28:36£17 paid.
28:37I was going for £7.
28:38Right.
28:39But we can work with £17, alright? I'm going to give it a good shot.
28:41Let's move on now to what must be the big spend.
28:44Yes.
28:45It was always going to be the table.
28:46I like an occasional table, I really do.
28:48Very functional.
28:49Good quality as well.
28:50Walnut, satin wood.
28:52I love the ceramic casters.
28:53I've been punchy.
28:5460 to 80.
28:55They spent £125.
28:57Well, there's a chance.
28:58Serious buyers with serious money.
29:00I'm just going to need two or three of them, I think.
29:01Right.
29:02Let's move on to the blues.
29:03Charlotte and Pat.
29:05Kate Bliss, their expert.
29:06And an item that makes a sound, that was my challenge.
29:09So it's going to be the bell.
29:11Yes.
29:12It obviously ticks the challenge, which is important.
29:13It's nicely decorated, nicely cast with the animals.
29:15Why not?
29:16Animals at auction, you know I love that.
29:17It's minimum estimate.
29:18It's £10 to £20.
29:19£5 spent.
29:20Yeah, OK, good.
29:21Right, let's move on to a more precious metal.
29:23The Japanese piece, the pepperette.
29:25I love the tripod legs.
29:26They're so cool.
29:27It's lovely having the spoon.
29:28You've got the blue glass liner of the salt as well.
29:31So it's all there.
29:32Good condition.
29:33Good clear marks.
29:3440 to 60.
29:35Oh, but £75 was paid.
29:36Oh, that's OK.
29:37You will make it happen.
29:38I'm sure you will.
29:39At least you'll try.
29:40More silver.
29:41This time we're going further back in time, late 19th century.
29:44We're always going to get interest in a sovereign holder.
29:46They're very popular auction, as you know.
29:48OK, it's not a double, which we'd love it to be, but this is in good order.
29:51Good age to it.
29:5280, 92.
29:5360 to 80.
29:5424 pounds was spent.
29:5524?
29:56Yeah.
29:57They should have bought two of those.
29:58They really should have bought as many as were available, because that is a steal.
30:01Amazing.
30:02So it's you on the rostrum doing your level best.
30:05I will.
30:06I promise.
30:07My gavel is raised.
30:08I will sell at £100 online.
30:11Rina, Dilly, Danny, here we are, ready to perform.
30:16Ready to make money?
30:19Yes.
30:20Yes.
30:21I believe you are.
30:22And you were ready when it came to my challenge.
30:25Yes.
30:26Something to do with animals.
30:28I'll show you how it's done.
30:29It's so lovely, that corkscrew.
30:31Are you looking forward to seeing it sell?
30:32Yeah.
30:33Cheap and cheerful.
30:34Yeah.
30:35£10, so a nice easy way to start the auction, isn't it?
30:37Indeed.
30:38Can we see how it goes?
30:39Yes.
30:40Yes, please.
30:41Let's do it.
30:42I've got commission that starts me at 26.
30:44I'm looking for 28.
30:45Come on back!
30:4628.
30:4730.
30:4832.
30:49I'm 34.
30:5036.
30:51It's 36 in the room.
30:5238.
30:53Fair warning.
30:54We all sure.
30:55All done.
30:56I'm selling at £36.
30:58Yes!
31:01It's a £26 profit.
31:03Yes.
31:04What a good way to start.
31:06We are moving into the vases.
31:08Yes.
31:09£17.
31:10Do you reckon another profit is on the horizon?
31:12I do.
31:13Come on.
31:14I think we're going to get another profit here.
31:16Let's see how they get on.
31:17Here we go.
31:18Start me at £20.
31:1920, I'm being.
31:20Yes!
31:2120 in the room.
31:23Where is 22?
31:24Come on.
31:2522.
31:2624.
31:27It's 22 is going to do it then.
31:2824 I offer.
31:29Fair warning.
31:30Selling at £22.
31:33£25.
31:34Oh, yes!
31:35We've got a profit.
31:36We've got a profit.
31:37Well done.
31:38Yes!
31:39It's a tidy little profit of £5.
31:41I don't want to take that.
31:42So, we'll add that to your running total.
31:44All of a sudden we have £31 to play with and two profits,
31:48which means one away from a golden gavel.
31:51Right.
31:52What comes between you and the golden gavel is your big spend,
31:55annoyingly.
31:56It's the big gamble.
31:57You spent £125 on this table.
32:00It's a lovely table.
32:01Come on.
32:02Here we go.
32:03It's a stunner.
32:05I can go straight in at 65, 75, 85, 95.
32:13I'm looking for £100.
32:14Come on!
32:15Where's £100?
32:16Where's £100?
32:17It's £95 here with me.
32:20It's quiet online.
32:21I need £100 from you.
32:22You all sure then?
32:23I will sell at £95.
32:27Oh!
32:28Oh!
32:29£95.
32:30It's a loss.
32:31It's a £30 loss.
32:33Ladies, you had £31, so you're still in profit.
32:36Ah!
32:37Still in profit.
32:38It's a pound profit is where we land.
32:41Now, we don't get a golden gavel to hand over to you,
32:43which is annoying but not the end of the world.
32:45No.
32:46But we do get to say, Danny, please grab your bonus buy.
32:49Of course!
32:50Because you left £148 to Danny, so there is one more chance.
32:54One pound and one more chance.
32:56Danny, you grab your bonus buy.
32:58I'll grab it.
32:59I hope he spent more than a pound on it.
33:00Right, ladies, you cover your eyes.
33:02Danny, here you are.
33:04You're ready and raring to go, ladies, on Danny's queue.
33:07Open your eyes.
33:09OK.
33:10Oh!
33:11Oh!
33:12It's so cute.
33:13A little cutie.
33:14That is so cute.
33:15Oh, he is cute.
33:16What did you spend with him?
33:18Well, just hold on a minute.
33:19Just calm down, Danny.
33:20It's funny.
33:21Do you do any sewing yourself?
33:23A little bit.
33:24It's a pincushion.
33:25It is a pincushion.
33:26It is a pincushion.
33:27It's white metal.
33:28OK.
33:29It's a white metal material.
33:30It's not silver, but it's got a silver look.
33:32Animals always sell well.
33:33They're quite a novelty.
33:35It's in great condition.
33:36The only thing that's really going against it is it's not silver.
33:40But it's not priced as silver.
33:43OK.
33:44So, what did you pay?
33:46I paid...
33:47What would you pay?
33:48For this, I would have said about 18 most.
33:51You're not for help!
33:53I paid 20.
33:5420?
33:55Oh!
33:56What do you think it would make in auction?
33:57It's got to make 30, 40 pound.
34:00Yeah.
34:01I'd sort of look at it in auction about 20 to 40.
34:03I think it's so cute.
34:04He is cute.
34:05Shall we go for it?
34:06Shall we go for it?
34:07Yeah.
34:08Let's go for it.
34:09Great.
34:10So, that sounds to me like a unanimous decision.
34:11Yeah.
34:12So, the Reds are going with the bonus buy.
34:13But what does Tim think?
34:15White metal in nice condition.
34:17I think for a pig pincushion, which we see a lot of.
34:20This is a nice example.
34:2120 to 30.
34:22OK.
34:23Well, 20 pounds paid.
34:24Yeah, that's good.
34:25So...
34:26Profit all day long.
34:27Yeah.
34:28Yeah, easy.
34:29Tim thinks you've made the right decision.
34:31He says 20 to 30 pounds for the pig.
34:33He agrees it's a lovely cast, lovely shape.
34:36For some reason, it just makes you smile.
34:38Here he comes.
34:39The piggy is literally going to market.
34:40Here we go.
34:43Start with 30 pounds.
34:45Where's 30 pounds?
34:46Come on.
34:47Where's 20 then?
34:4820.
34:4920.
34:5022.
34:5124.
34:5226.
34:5328.
34:5430.
34:5532.
34:5634.
34:57It's a bid in my room at 32 pounds at the very back.
35:01Any further advance, are we all sure and done then?
35:03Fair warning and finished, I'm selling to the room at 32 pounds.
35:07Yes.
35:08Well done.
35:09Yes.
35:10That would do.
35:11So good.
35:12Woo!
35:13Lovely.
35:14Now, sometimes on Bargain Hunt the maths is hard, but 12 plus one is quite easy.
35:18It's 13, that's where you land, 13 pounds in profit.
35:19I am delighted for you.
35:20But the blues might fare slightly better, you never know.
35:21Or they could feel miserable.
35:22Exactly.
35:23Exactly.
35:24Yes.
35:25Yeah.
35:26This is your first ever auction.
35:27Yes.
35:28What have you been waiting for?
35:29We'll find out, won't we?
35:30Absolutely.
35:31We have.
35:32Yes.
35:33Okay.
35:34Pat, Charlotte, Kate, we're here, we're watching Tim in action and the next lot he sells will
35:39be yours.
35:40My challenge was to find an item that makes a sound.
35:41You did that and you only spent five pounds.
35:42We did.
35:43So are we starting with a profit?
35:44Totally.
35:45Yeah.
35:46Just say yes, with confidence.
35:47They'll hear you.
35:48They'll make it happen.
35:49Come on, here comes the bell.
35:50Start with just ten pounds.
35:51Let's see where you take me.
35:52Where's ten pounds?
35:53Let's see where you take me.
35:54Where's ten pounds?
35:55Yes.
35:56Let's see some hands.
35:57Ten on bid, thank you.
35:58Yes.
35:59Where's twelve?
36:00Twelve.
36:01Fourteen?
36:02Sixteen?
36:03Sixteen just fine.
36:05Fourteen pounds here.
36:06Sixteen online.
36:07Eighteen.
36:08Thank you for your bids.
36:09Sixteen pounds, I've got you.
36:10But you all sure, all done there.
36:12You all sure, all done there.
36:13You did that.
36:14You did that and you only spent five pounds.
36:15We did.
36:16So are we starting with a profit?
36:17Yeah.
36:18Just say yes, with confidence.
36:19They'll hear you.
36:20They'll hear you.
36:21They'll make it happen.
36:22Come on, here comes the bell.
36:23Yes!
36:24Oh, wow.
36:25Ring-a-ding-ding.
36:26That is a big, big reaction for an 11-pound profit.
36:27It is!
36:28Charlotte.
36:29But I like your style.
36:30So we now...
36:31Just let's have the next one.
36:32Yeah.
36:33Well, it's your biggest obstacle in terms of price.
36:36£75 is your big spend.
36:37Kate, it's a classy crew, it said, is it not?
36:40It is.
36:41I mean, do you think it's your biggest obstacle in terms of price?
36:4475 pounds is your big spend.
36:46Kate, it's a classy crew, it said, is it not?
36:47It is.
36:48I mean, do you think it's your biggest obstacle in terms of price?
36:4975 pounds is your big spend.
36:50Kate, it's a classy crew, it said, is it not?
36:52It is.
36:53I mean, Japanese silver is selling really well at the moment.
36:55Yeah.
36:56This is a really interesting design.
36:57So I really hope the silver collectors are after it.
36:59Here we come.
37:00And it's going under the hammer right now.
37:02I'd like to start at 42, 44, 46, 48, 50.
37:06Looking for 55.
37:0855, 60.
37:09Make it 65 online.

37:16Yes!
37:17I need 85 for me on the net.

37:40Yes.
37:41Well done.
37:42Fantastic.
37:43So that is a 45 pound profit.
37:47We'll add that to your current total of 11 and we land on 56.
37:52Wow.
37:53As we move into the item you both think is going to bring the biggest profit.
37:57Let's hope we're right.
37:58That is the sovereign case.
37:59It can't be less than 24 pounds.
38:01You really can, Pat.
38:0224 pounds is all you paid.
38:04I reckon you are going home with a golden gavel.
38:08I don't want to jinx it.
38:10I don't want to jinx it.
38:11But, but.
38:12Tash.
38:13Here we go.
38:14Come on.
38:15A lot riding on this.
38:16And I'm straight in at 55.

38:2890.
38:2995.
38:30100 is bid.
38:31Yes!
38:32Come back to me with 110.
38:33It's 100 pounds then.
38:34I offer 110.
38:35You are all sure.
38:36All happy and finished.
38:37Selling up 100 pounds.
38:40Yes!
38:41Done lady.
38:42It's a 76 pound profit.
38:44So overall you have 132 pounds in the kitty.
38:47You have golden gavels guaranteed.
38:49Yes.
38:50I mean it's just so wonderful.
38:51But there's still more to do.
38:53We are not fully done.
38:54196 pounds was left for Kate.
38:57So please grab your bonus buy.
38:58And ladies, I know it's exciting but could you take a moment to close your eyes?
39:04Right, Kate's ready when you are.
39:06Kate, over to you.
39:07Well, there was one item which we didn't find on the shop which I knew you secretly really wanted.
39:13So open your eyes.
39:14Oh!
39:15It is a bus!
39:16It is a bus!
39:17It is a bus!
39:18And I think, I'm hoping...
39:19And it's Dad's favourite bus.
39:20It is!
39:21I'm hoping it was the one that your husband, very close to the one your husband drove and
39:26your dad drove.
39:27OK, that's amazing.
39:28But I wouldn't be buying it if I didn't think it was a good buy.
39:31Because this is a lovely little Dinky.
39:35And this is the route mastered...
39:37Now, of course, Dinky is a fantastic British toy die-cast model success story.
39:43The first bus came out in about the 1930s.
39:46But this is a lot later.
39:48In this livery, this particular model came out in about 1964.
39:53This is probably a little bit later.
39:55But we have the box and it's in really nice condition.
39:58What did you pay for it, Kate?
40:00£18.
40:01OK.
40:02What do you think it might vouch?
40:03I'm going to say £20 to £40 is my prediction with Tim Leeds.
40:08We've got to do it.
40:09Dad would want us to, wouldn't he?
40:10Absolutely.
40:11He's on my shoulder, so...
40:13OK, so it sounds like an easy sale.
40:16You going to go with the bonus buy?
40:17Definitely.
40:18OK.
40:19So the Blues are going with a bonus buy.
40:21They wanted a bus and they got one, but what does Tim think?
40:25The die-cast is absolutely immaculate.
40:28The decals are all there.
40:29The figures at the back.
40:30It's Dinky, a magic name when it comes to die-cast.
40:33The slight downfall of it is obviously the box.
40:35The end flap is loose and torn away.
40:37I've put £20 to £30 and I think we'll beat it.
40:39Well, £18 paid.
40:40Yeah, this is on the money.
40:42He says £20 to £30.
40:44That's his estimate.
40:45OK.
40:46It's about to go under the hammer.
40:47I really hope that this does well.
40:49Lovely personal connection, so let's see how it goes.
40:52Got you.
40:53I've got interest, of course.
40:54I could start at £24, £26.
40:56Yes!
40:57I look for 30.
40:5830, 32, 34, 36.
41:01Bid me £38.
41:02It's with you, sir, at £38.
41:04My gavel is raised.
41:06It's with you, all sure and done, at £38.
41:09Well done.
41:10Extra £20 to add to your £132.
41:15152, ladies.
41:16152.
41:17And golden gavels all round.
41:20Kudos to you.
41:21Well done.
41:28The OK teams, who's done it?
41:29You're desperate to know who's done it.
41:31Who's come out on top?
41:32The Reds.
41:33Oh, I thought you said the Reds then.
41:34Of course, the Blues.
41:36Well, each team made a profit.
41:38No.
41:39Right.
41:40But the bigger profit today was made.
41:42For the Blues!
41:43Yes!
41:44Well done.
41:46Well done.
41:47They were determined to win and they've done it.
41:51They've done it.
41:52Right, I'm turning to you, Reds.
41:54Although, overall, you've made £13 and you are today's runners-up.
41:59I am so proud of you.
42:01And I kind of wanted it to stop when you had a grand total of £1
42:05after three items.
42:06Because a £1 profit on Bargain Hunt is kind of like a badge of honour.
42:10I loved it.
42:11Danny had to go and ruin it.
42:13That £12 to the kitty and make it £13.
42:17But you just laughed all the way.
42:19You had a lovely time.
42:20It was awesome.
42:21Brilliant.
42:22Absolutely brilliant.
42:23Now, let me tell you what the Blues got.
42:24It might blow you away.
42:25You're Going Home Blues with £152.
42:27Yes!
42:28Wow!
42:29It is impressive.
42:30It's serious money.
42:31Well done.
42:32So, yeah, here we are.
42:33Sounds like golden gavels to me.
42:34It is a golden gavels.
42:35Oh, well done.
42:36It was.
42:37Well done.
42:38Golden gavels all round, as it happens.
42:41One for everyone.
42:42So, your Bargain Hunt experience, even better than you imagined?
42:43Yes.
42:44Absolutely.
42:45I'm so pleased.
