00:00It is a joy to be with you this afternoon and to talk about what I've been asked to talk about from Josh Bice when he invited me this year to speak.
00:13He asked that I would speak on modesty, submission, and femininity, and he wrote me and told me that he thinks it's a huge problem in our circles today,
00:24and so he wanted me to address that issue with you, especially speaking from 1 Timothy chapter 2.
00:31And I wrote him back, and I said, I really want to talk about the sovereignty of God because that's what this is about.
00:38And so I'm trying to be respectful, but I'm thinking I'm the older woman, you know.
00:44But anyway, so I really wanted to speak on the sovereignty of God as seen in Psalm 145, but I didn't get my way, and that's okay.
00:52So God has a purpose for this.
00:55But anyway, you know God is sovereign.
00:58He is sovereign over life and death.
01:00He's sovereign over this conference.
01:02And he is sovereign over his choice and his will for us as women.
01:07And he has a special design for us as women.
01:10And I know a lot of women today, they fight that idea that God has designed for them.
01:16And he is sovereign over male and female and what our roles are.
01:21So in a way, it is still dealing with the sovereignty of God.
01:25But before we begin our time together, I do want to pray and ask the Lord's blessing on our time.
01:33Our Father, we are so grateful that you have called us to this time together.
01:39I thank you for these women.
01:41I thank you for their diligence and their desire to want to learn.
01:46I thank you for those that I have met and those that I will meet through the rest of our time together here in Atlanta.
01:54Father, I thank you most of all for Christ.
01:57Without him, Lord, we would not be here.
02:00Without him coming to earth as a baby and growing up to die on a cross for our wretched sins, we would not be here.
02:08There would be no reason for that.
02:10Thank you for sending him.
02:12Thank you, Jesus, for coming.
02:14And dear Holy Spirit, I do pray that you would speak to each of our hearts.
02:19For some, this might be material they've heard before.
02:23Others may have this passage of scripture memorized.
02:27Others may have never heard this.
02:30But Lord, I pray that we would all listen attentively.
02:34Lord, I pray this time would not be wasted.
02:37Father, I pray, as Thomas Watson once so beautifully said, we've heard a thousand sermons, but have we learned any of them?
02:46So some of these women may have heard this a thousand times, but have they learned it?
02:51Have I learned it?
02:52And so, Father, I pray that you would guide in our time.
02:56Use it for your glory.
02:58May Christ be magnified.
03:01May he be glorified in this sweet time we have together.
03:04Thank you again for these ladies and for their love for you and, Lord, for their love for their families.
03:12We ask these things in Christ's name.
03:14Amen.
03:16Well, I grew up in a Baptist minister's home.
03:19And I remember as a little girl growing up, sometimes I'd go out in the lobby or when I was growing up, it was called the vestibule.
03:25And my dad had a lot of these little books, you know, for sale.
03:29And I remember as a little girl, one of them caught my eye, and it was called Bobbed Hair, Bossy Wives and Women Preachers.
03:38And I thought, that's a weird book, a weird title.
03:41And the title certainly is a catchy one, but when I read the book, it was not exactly biblical.
03:49What is the role of a woman, and specifically, what is the role of a woman in the church and her role in the home?
04:00Thankfully, I don't have copies of Bobbed Hair, Bossy Wives and Women Preachers for you.
04:04I'm not going to pass that out at the end of my session.
04:07But we do need to read God's word because, ladies, that is our plumb line for us as women.
04:14That is our plumb line for everything we do in life.
04:16Our brother Peter says he's given us everything we need for life and godliness, and it's right here in this book.
04:24These 66 love letters that God has left for you.
04:27And so God's word is our plumb line for us as women.
04:30And so we're going to be looking at 1 Timothy 2, 9 to 15.
04:34And if you have your Bible, I hope that you will open it up, or if you have it on your phone, and read along with me.
04:39And notice what Paul says to Timothy, his son in the faith, this young man that he is mentoring.
04:46He says,
04:47And like men are also, the women should adorn themselves in modest apparel with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but that which is proper for women who are professing godliness with good works.
05:00I do not permit a woman to learn, to teach or have authority over a man, but to be in silence.
05:06For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
05:09And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived fell into transgression.
05:13Nevertheless, she will be saved in childbearing if she continues in faith and love and holiness with sobriety.
05:20Now, for those of you that like to take notes, I brought a 16-year-old girl from my church who's helping us at the book table, and I've noticed she's taking copious notes everywhere she goes.
05:29She has pages and pages of notes.
05:31So if you like to take notes, I'm going to give you an outline of what we're going to be looking at.
05:36First of all, we're going to be looking at the woman's clothing in the church, verse 9, the woman's clothing in the church.
05:41Secondly, the woman's character in the church, the woman's character in the church, in verse 10.
05:48Thirdly, the woman's conduct in the church, the woman's conduct in the church, verses 11 and 12.
05:54Fourthly, the woman's created order, the woman's created order, in verses 13 and 14.
06:00and then lastly the woman's calling the woman's calling in verse 15 now i don't like jumping in
06:09the middle of a text but here we are and i do want to say just this that paul wrote this epistle
06:15this is a pastor epistle and he wrote it to timothy his son in the faith of one young man
06:22that he discipled and he tells him in chapter 5 13 he says these things i've written unto you this
06:28is why i'm writing this letter to you timothy who is pastoring the church at ephesus the reason i'm
06:34writing these things to you is so that you will know how to behave yourself in the house of god
06:39which is the church of god the pillar and the ground of the truth and so he's teaching him
06:46instructing him not only what the man's role in the church is but now he is addressing the woman's
06:53role he had just addressed the men they're to pray without wrath and doubting they're to lift up their
06:57holy hands as they pray and then he says likewise the women and so we're going now into the woman's
07:04role of the church and by the way first timothy is a wonderful epistle it not only deals with what
07:09should be going on in the church but paul is also deal dealing with the doctrines of demons that were
07:14going on in his day forbidding to marry and commanding to abstain from food which god has created to be
07:19received with thanksgiving and so uh it's a very timely epistle for our day and age so we're going to
07:26look at first what is the woman's role in the church first of all paul deals with her clothes
07:31what should she wear to church as a woman who belongs to the house of god well let's look at
07:39verse 9 in like manner the women are to dress in modest apparel now first of all we have to ask the
07:47question what does it mean in like manner also well it could mean two things first of all it could mean
07:56as he just mentioned the women of the men are to pray you're lifting up their holy hands without
08:01wrath and without doubting so in like manner women when they pray should also lift up their holy hands
08:07without wrath and without doubting but in like manner could also refer to how she is to conduct
08:16herself in the public worship service he's already addressed the men how are the men supposed to
08:23conduct themselves in the worship service and now he's going to address the women both views are
08:29accurate accurate and both views are true and so you can take each one you want i wouldn't fight about
08:34it and don't post nasty things on twitter about what your view is it's not worth that all right
08:39but he does say that women are to adorn themselves in modest apparel now the word adorn here means to
08:47arrange or to put in order so ladies it indicates our clothing should have some type of order
08:57uh modest here the greek word for modest uh is not what most people have been brought up to believe
09:03or i was brought up to believe as a baptist minister's daughter but modest actually is a greek word which
09:09means a sense of shame means a sense of shame a sense of shame so it would indicate that a woman
09:16should not feel guilty about what she is wearing ladies we do not want to cause anyone especially a brother
09:26in christ when they come to church we do not want to cause a brother to stumble or sin because of the way
09:34that we are dressed in fact the word apparel here means a dress something that's let down a flowing
09:42garment or a robe now in biblical times women wore long flowing robes or mantles and this does not mean
09:51that some have meant it to take that we should go out today and go to the nearest store clothing store
09:58when g3 is over tonight and buy some big long flowing toga robe and put it over our head and our
10:04face and all that in fact one time somebody challenged me and told me i was a false teacher
10:09because i didn't teach that women should go out and buy long togas and you know wear them over their
10:13head and their face and everything else and so but i'm on a website with macarthur and justin peters as
10:18a false teacher so i'm in good company so that's okay but it was over this issue and uh that's not what
10:26what paul is saying here he is saying it does mean that a woman should dress for church with the thought
10:33in mind that she's going to worship god ladies you're going to meet the lord and so is this how
10:39you would dress if you knew jesus christ in the flesh was going to be at your church is this how
10:47you would dress and by the way he's there he's omnipresent he is there now paul goes on to describe
10:54the way she should dress with the words propriety and moderation propriety means a soundness of mind
11:00good good sense and moderation indicates women should not be extreme in her dress she should
11:11not try and show off her body she doesn't have to have the latest fashion she needs to be modest but
11:19she doesn't need to be showing off her body she doesn't need to be drawing attention to herself
11:25and ladies the women in paul's day did just that they drew attention to themselves and may i say this
11:33women today christian women today many of them dress in a manner to draw attention to their bodies or to
11:41themselves and he mentions the way that the biblical world the women in the biblical world drew attention
11:48to themselves notice what he says braided hair gold pearls costly clothing now this might be a little
11:56weird to us a little different but we always need to put ourselves in the shoes of the biblical world
12:02and the first way they overdid it was braiding the hair and you might be saying well susan i've got braids
12:07am i in sin no you're not in sin some of you probably have very beautiful braids on and you are not
12:14in sin but one man helps us here and i think it's good to read from him he said no expense was spared
12:21to make clothing dazzling they actually sparkled and so the braids were fastened by jeweled tortoise
12:28shell combs or by pins or ivory or silver and the pins were of bronze with jeweled heads and the more
12:36varied and expensive the better and they were made out of animals or female figures and for a woman to have
12:43braided hair in the biblical world meant that she had a lot of money it was a sign of luxury in fact
12:48they would often have these huge braids and you know be up to here and many women uh feared to go
12:54to bed at night because they'd mess up their hair and all of their braids and i remember uh sometimes
13:00growing up you know people would go to bed with a little wig or some kind of a thing uh over your head
13:05so you didn't mess up your hair and so paul is saying you don't do that you don't come to church
13:12with some kind of extravagant hairstyle so that it will be distracting to those who are coming to
13:19worship the lord these braids that they had in the biblical world were expensive and they were very
13:25gaudy now i will say this ladies this does not give you license to come to church you know looking like
13:31you just put your finger in the electrical socket and uh you know your hair is a fright and uh you're
13:37like you know anything that would draw attention to yourself our hair should be becoming and it
13:43should not be fixed in a way to draw attention to ourselves the second outlandish adornment
13:50was gold and pearls again the same man helps us a woman who is a believer must not try to make
13:56herself conspicuous by a vain display of ornaments of gold also she will not yearn for pearls
14:03from the indian ocean these were often fabulously priced and way beyond the purchasing power of the
14:10average church member in order to obtain a pearl of great value a merchant might have to sell all of
14:16his possessions in fact they said the emperor's wife she had emeralds and pearls gleaming all over her head
14:24her hair her ears her neck and her fingers to the value of over a million dollars and that's in the
14:33biblical world so that's been a long time ago but they would they would often come to church
14:38uh with rings on every one of their fingers and bracelets up and down their arms so when they come
14:43in you know it's clanging and gold around their neck and and so what's going to happen when they're
14:48coming into the synagogue to worship uh they look like a clanging mess right uh their braided hair
14:54their you know female figures in their hair tortoise shells in their hair and all this jewelry
14:59blopping around and and so what does that do that distracts from the reason we go to church we go
15:07to church to worship the lord but again ladies may i say this uh this does not mean you can't wear
15:14jewelry uh peter says in his epistle our adorning should not be merely jewelry and braiding hair it's
15:20not that they're condemning jewelry they're not even condemning having a nice hairstyle but ladies it should
15:26be worn in such a way to not draw attention to ourselves it should be attractive and becoming
15:31i remember when my daughter and son-in-law were out at the master's uh college and then he went on to
15:37seminary there but i remember they were going to a certain church and they finally had to leave that
15:42church uh because my son-in-law said i cannot worship there because the women were coming in halter tops
15:49and so he's trying to stand there and worship the lord while they're ahead of him barely clothed and
15:57so they loved the preaching but they had to leave the church uh that's more what we deal with in our
16:03day is women coming to church with blouses too low and dresses too short and too tight and so a man
16:10that is behind you is seeing you as you stand to worship and he can't fix his eyes on the savior and the
16:17cross and music and worshiping the lord because we are many times distracting by the way that we dress
16:25so ladies we need to be very careful how we do that lastly paul mentions women should not wear costly
16:31clothing to church uh some women in that day in the biblical world would wear dresses that cost
16:377 000 denariah that doesn't mean much to us but that's 140 000 back then i can't even imagine i don't
16:46even think my whole wardrobe's worth 140 000 i mean this i got off amazon this was my mother-in-law so
16:52i mean she's been gone a long time so i mean and you say yeah it looks like it but uh but during
16:59covid my my daughter said mom you can buy clothes off amazon you know and i was like really okay well
17:03maybe i'll buy a dress off amazon so pretty good deal but uh i don't even think my whole wardrobe is
17:09the hat but ladies when we come to worship the lord we should not show off our bodies we shouldn't
17:14show off our clothes we shouldn't show off our jewelry when we dress in the morning for worship we need
17:20to be mindful of dressing to please the lord we should not dress to attract the attention of men but
17:26dress to show the inner attitude of our heart ladies do not allow the culture to dictate to you what to wear
17:32i dread going sometimes to have to buy clothes because uh it is very challenging uh to find
17:40something that is modest don't worry about what others think of you ladies do not be like the woman
17:47in proverbs 7 10 where solomon says about her there was a woman that met him with the attire of a harlot
17:54and a crafty heart ladies your outer dress reflects your inner heart it really does
18:01what you are wearing today reflects what is in your heart and by the way i know we're talking about
18:08how we should dress at church but could i say this you need to watch how you dress in other places as
18:15well even when you run to walmart to pick up something you need to be careful how you are
18:21dressing in the privacy of your home with your husband or whatever that's up to you
18:26but when you're worshiping the lord or you're out in a public place
18:30be mindful you are representing christ
18:34you are representing our father who is in heaven
18:38dress as one of his daughters do not dress
18:42as one a woman of the world well paul moves from the clothing women should wear
18:47to church to the character they should wear to church and by the way
18:50in my humble opinion women should wear this character at all times not just in church
18:57to do only this in church is hypocrisy and as charles haddon spurgeon says we named our firstborn son
19:04after charles haddon spurgeon charles edward edward after jonathan edwards but uh charles spurgeon
19:10says what you are at home is what you are what you are at home is what you are so ladies
19:15this attitude should also be in our homes not just in church notice what he says
19:20but which is proper for women professing godliness with good works anytime you have a but in the bible
19:28it's usually a word of contrast uh buts are interesting in the bible we uh debbie and i met a
19:33flight attendant on a plane one time and she saw us reading our bibles or doing something with
19:37christianity she asked us if we were christians and we said yes and uh she said hey i have a friend
19:43and she wrote a book called all the buts in the bible have you read it i go no i haven't read that
19:47book and at first i didn't know what she meant and uh then she said you know all the buts in the bible
19:53all the contrasts in the bible and uh i thought i haven't bought it but it's on amazon i have seen it so
19:59uh but here's one of the buts in the bible he says but is a word of contrast instead of dressing
20:07provocatively we dress properly instead of dressing ostentatiously we dress moderately
20:17paul puts it like this that which is proper for women professing godliness in other words that which
20:26is appropriate for women who say they're god-fearing women interesting greek word here profess
20:33it means to convey with a message that is loud and clear ladies women today are dressing with a
20:42message that is loud and clear but it is a far cry from godliness i don't know about you but i dread
20:49sometimes going out of my home just for this reason alone going to the grocery store i don't dread going
20:56to my church because most of the women in my church dress modestly and uh but when deb and i have to
21:02travel a lot and we go to have to fly um it's challenging uh just standing in line waiting for
21:08our flight and watching women who only are forgot half of their clothes and then watching other men
21:15lust after them and especially young men it just breaks my heart and so often i dread going places
21:22because i know there will be women and sometimes men too who are not appropriately dressed and i feel
21:29bad for the men of our age i have five grandsons who are teenagers and uh i pray for them often but
21:35i feel for them because they are tempted uh many ways that is probably very very challenging just by
21:41the way that young ladies dress and by the way if you're a mother uh please please teach your daughter
21:47uh to dress modestly before my daughter became a believer and we'd go clothes shopping it was quite the
21:52challenge and i said sorry you are not buying that and you're not going out of the home of that even if you
21:57did buy it so uh i was so thankful when the lord saved her now we're the best of friends but back then
22:02if it weren't for her dad i probably would have killed her but uh i was very thankful that uh he
22:10could come between us but now she she loves the lord now having said that i will also say that a godly
22:17woman should look nice at church but she does not have to have the latest fashions in order to do so
22:23ladies you don't have to shop all week spending money on jewelry and the latest trend so you can
22:28shock everyone at church on sunday with your new outfit ladies you need to realize what you're going
22:35to wear to church this sunday what you're wearing right now one day unless the lord returns it's going
22:40to burn up it's going to burn up that chair you're sitting on is going to burn up and so you realize
22:47that and so your heart is not set on your body your heart is not set on your outward appearance
22:53it's not set on your clothes it is set on your inner attitude of a meek and quiet spirit which is
23:00precious in the sight of god paul puts it like this notice how he puts it professing godliness with
23:07good works notice he didn't say good look good works ladies good work should be your adornment
23:16that should be your adornment that is what should attract the attention of those at your church
23:23that worship with you not your clothes oh look at that woman look at her clothes look at her jewelry
23:31look at her makeup look at the way look at that isn't that great it said look at that woman isn't
23:37she a godly saint you know i heard this week that she ministered to a lady that just had a baby or i heard
23:43you know look at her she is a woman that is known with good works not good looks and not the outward
23:51appearance but the heart ladies a woman of god will focus on her good works and that what she that's
23:56what she spends her time on one man says this it reflects the right attitude of the mind for paul was
24:03shrewd enough to know that a woman's dress is a mirror of her mind end of quote a woman's dress
24:10is a mirror of her mind ladies a woman is adornment in short lies not in what she puts
24:16herself puts on but in the loving service she gives out well paul now moves from the her character to her
24:25conduct in verses 11 and 12 notice what he says let a woman learn in silence with all submission now paul
24:33also addresses this the church of corinth he mentions the same thing in first corinthians 14 34 and 35
24:39let the women keep silent in the churches for they're not permitted to speak for there to be submissive
24:44as the law says and if they want to learn anything let them ask their husbands at home for it is shameful
24:50for a woman to speak in the church now before you get all upset and start getting agitated and angry which is a
24:58sin you need to put off um now i know because i had a terrible temper before i became a believer so my
25:06husband used to say he's gonna put on my headstone she did it her way so uh so don't get mad just hold on okay
25:12we need to understand the biblical world oftentimes we as women we read these passages and we bristle
25:18and that's not very attractive but we need to understand the church services in the new testament were very
25:25different than ours in fact the church at corinth where paul addresses the sentence i just read
25:31uh women not women men would stand up uh some would prophesy some would uh have a tongue some would do the
25:38interpretation of tongue uh often they would stand up and challenge the speaker and so women often would
25:44stand up and challenge the speaker as well in fact it was so out of order in the church of corinth that paul has
25:52to come to the end of his letter and he says let everything be done decently and in order why because
25:58it was out of order it was chaotic uh in the church of corinth and ladies also before you bristle you need
26:04to understand all the culture but you need to understand this in the jewish world it was unheard of
26:12for a woman even to attend public worship and so uh they were discouraged from learning and she was
26:20encouraged to remain at home women did not even come to meals and never appeared alone in public
26:25so people who call paul a male chauvinist and i've actually heard women call him that
26:30people who call paul a male chauvinist don't realize what was going on in the biblical world
26:36at this time and paul is actually commending women to learn that was new for that culture he's commending
26:46women to learn in church ladies in christ there is no male or female i had a woman tell me recently
26:54that one of her elders told her that women are not smart enough to learn the bible and i said you're
26:59not going to stay in that church are you and she said nope we're not and i said okay good
27:02that's crazy of course we can learn the bible right and that's what paul is doing here he's commending
27:08that we can learn but ladies we have restrictions in the church of god just like men have restrictions
27:15we also do and so paul says a woman should learn in silence now ladies the learn here means to listen
27:23silence does not mean muzzled silence does not mean that you need to take duct tape to church sunday
27:32morning and put it over your mouth and never talk to anyone the word silence here in the greek means
27:38we are to remain calm we are to remain calm in church we're not to stand up we're not to challenge
27:46the preacher we actually had a woman in our church that was eventually church disciplined
27:50for this very reason she would sit in the back of the church auditorium and often she would start
27:58yelling out when my husband was preaching and trying to contradict what he was saying and eventually
28:04she was put out of the church for this reason and also doing uh illegal abusing illegal and medical
28:11drugs and so she was eventually um put out of the church and by the way this is not in my notes but
28:17you know church discipline is really serious and you know that passage i was a pastor's wife for 46 years
28:21but that passage that says you give them over to satan for the destruction of the flesh it's true
28:27that next morning after she was disciplined on a sunday she stood up uh to go to the bathroom fell
28:33and hit her head on the toilet never walked again and uh then died eventually and in every every
28:38situation in the 46 years that i was his wife and the 50 years he preached he wasn't married to anyone
28:44else before that i was only he preached before i married him but anyway um uh every church discipline i ever
28:51saw that is really true most people either died or got very sick so don't take that lightly god will
28:58not be mocked he means what he says uh we give them over to satan for the destruction of the flesh
29:03and so ladies when we come to church it doesn't mean we can't talk that we do have a lot of things we can
29:09do in the lord's house but we cannot stand up and challenge the preacher we are to be uh in uh we are to
29:18respect those that are in authority over us ladies we should not be rebellious in our heart
29:24or in our actions our calling in life as a woman in the church does come with limitations so does the
29:34man now can we teach ladies yes can we teach children yes can we sing yes there there is tons of things we
29:43can do in the church right we have lots of women in our church that are serving and using their
29:47spiritual gifts and i'm so thankful for it and we have a ladies bible study where women facilitate
29:52small groups and we have a heavily discipling ministry in our church and so there's a lot of
29:57things we can do but we do have limitations we need to be respectful to those in authority over us
30:04the limitation that we have mainly has to do with men and that is seen in verse 12 notice what paul says
30:11i do not permit a woman to teach or usurp authority over a man but to be in silence now one of the
30:18questions i get asked a lot in fact some of you text me and said there's men here in your session
30:23and i said well then i'll have debbie ask them to leave uh but i do uh get this question asked a lot
30:30when i go and speak at women's conferences and retreats is why do you not allow men in your sessions and
30:36i've been criticized for this slander for this persecuted for this and i say you should take
30:43them to this passage because first of all these are my biblical convictions they were my husband's
30:47biblical convictions they're my elders for biblical convictions and uh my plumb line is scripture
30:53not what somebody else dictates to me now paul does say i do not permit a woman to teach a man
31:00i'm not sure what the opponent's issue is i know they pray all kinds of spiritual gymnastics
31:05to prove their point but this is a command it is not an option and remember what's he what's he
31:13writing to timothy what's the purpose how do you behave yourself in the house of god which is the
31:17church of god the pillar and ground of the truth he's talking about public worship in public worship
31:24in the local gathering of the assembly we are not to teach or have authority over a man and interesting
31:32words here in the greek have authority mean we are not to play the master we're not to play the master
31:40we're not the authority we're not to interrupt the preacher thus evidenced by the next words we're to
31:47be in silence so i know the question comes to mind a lot can a man learn from a woman of course he can
31:54i've had several men uh even at g3 come to my table and say i watch your youtube channel
31:59and uh i said great i read you know my husband or my husband my son-in-law graduated from southern
32:04seminary after uh the master seminary and he told me one of the best commentators that they had in one
32:10of his classes was written by a woman uh yes men can learn from women i think the most classic example
32:18we have is in acts 18 when apollos was ignorant about uh christ baptism he only knew the baptism
32:25of john and it says that priscilla and aquila took him aside and explained to him the way of god more
32:30excellently and the greek order there is that priscilla did most of the talking and if you study her
32:37in church history she actually was more biblically educated than her husband was she did most of the
32:43talking and so yes men can learn from women and yes women can learn the bible so don't let anybody
32:49tell you that error either and so yes we can but ladies we are not to teach in the public assembly
32:57in fact this is the second time the word silence has been mentioned so it must be important and again
33:03i want to be clear because i know some of you are going to leave here and you're going to take what i said
33:09and say something i didn't say i know because it happens all the time silence does not mean you're
33:17to be muzzled it just means when you go to church you need to be peaceable you need to be quiet you need
33:23to be calm you shouldn't be loud and boisterous you shouldn't challenge your pastor sunday morning when
33:31he stands up to preach that's not what we should be doing you might say well paul's a male chauvinist he
33:37makes me angry well he's not a male chauvinist i'm sorry he makes you angry but he does give a reason
33:43in verse 13 as to why women are to behave this way in the church and it has to do with her created
33:48order look at verse 13 and 14 for adam was first formed then eve the the word for gar because of
33:56why do we have to do this why do we behave this way in the church because adam was first formed
34:03then eve ladies this is the first reason women are to be silent in the church is because of the
34:09order of the creation who was created first adam right paul says clearly in first corinthians 11 3
34:17i want you to know the head of every man is christ the head of every woman is man and the head of
34:23christ is god in fact he goes on to say in verses 8 and 9 for man is not from woman but woman for man
34:29neither was man created for the woman but woman for the man ladies woman was taken out of man's side
34:36to be his companion she is not to be his master she is not to be his lord she is not to be his holy
34:44spirit or his mother and you know i was married for 46 years first 10 years as an unbeliever and um
34:51even though i thought i was a christian but the first two years as an unbeliever and uh i i did i tried to
34:57be my uh husband's mother his holy spirit and everything else and he would often say and remind
35:02me i you are not my mother and you're not my holy spirit and uh so thankful after the lord saved me i
35:09i i started treating him in a different manner and boy it sure may all the difference in our marriage
35:14uh when i stopped trying to do that i'll just tell you a little secret the more you nag your husband
35:19the more the farther you're going to find him in the corner of the rooftop and uh he you'll push him
35:23away further and further so uh but i haven't been asked to be talked about marriage so we'll talk
35:28about that another time well paul gives the second reason why women should not teach men in the local
35:33assembly notice what he says and adam was not deceived but the woman being deceived fell into
35:38transgression so ladies the second reason you're not to usurp authority over a man in the local
35:46assembly in your church is because eve was deceived in the garden and the word deceived means she was
35:55completely deceived she was seduced holy w-h-o-l-l-y holy not h-o-l-y in fact turn back to genesis 3
36:06genesis 3 1 we need to read this i can tell by looking at some of your faces you don't like this text so
36:14you need to go back to the beginning right genesis 3 1 now the serpent was more cunning than any beast
36:23of the field which the lord god had made and he said to the woman has god indeed said you shall not
36:28eat of every tree of the garden and the woman said to the serpent we may eat of the fruit of the trees
36:34of the garden but the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden god has said you shall
36:38not eat it nor shall you touch it least you die then the serpent said to the woman hi you're not
36:44going to die for god knows in the day you eat of it your eyes are going to be open and you will be
36:49like god knowing good and evil so when the woman saw the tree was good for food it was pleasant to
36:55her eyes and a tree desirable to make her wise she took of its fruit she ate it she also gave to her
37:01husband and he ate then the eyes of them both were opened and they knew they were naked and they
37:07sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings ladies adam disobeyed but the woman
37:15was deceived by satan in fact paul says in another place second corinthians 11 3 i fear i fearly somehow
37:24as the serpent deceived eve by his craftiness so your minds will be corrupted from the simplicity
37:31that is in christ also paul will write later on we don't have time to get into this but in
37:37second timothy 3 later on in the next chapter he talks about false teachers and their prey on women
37:44he said for of this sort they creep into houses that are filled with silly laden women who are kept
37:53captive by their lust they're loaded down with sins and so even in paul's day false teachers the men
38:00would be out working in the fields and the false teachers would actually enter in we they enter in
38:05now on our tvs and our instagram and facebook and youtube and all that many women are watching false
38:11teachers but in the biblical world they would actually come into the house and try to corrupt
38:16these silly women these silly deceived women who were laid down with sins and that's why for me
38:24personally that's why i have through the years the decades that i've been teaching bible studies for
38:29women i want to equip women uh to be women of the word to know what god says ladies you cannot afford
38:37not to be spending massive amounts of time in scripture you must know god's word we do not want
38:43to be deceived like eve was what adam did on his own he willfully disobeyed willful choice on his own
38:51he knew what he was doing eve was deceived and because of that she fell into transgression and
38:58ladies as women recognize your weakness don't don't fight against it i've been widowed now two years and
39:05um i i know god is sovereign in life and death i miss my husband greatly but one of the things i miss
39:11the most is his headship uh someone to talk bible theology someone to protect me uh someone who's looking
39:18out for my interest he was my biggest hero he would be sitting usually in home in his maroon chair when
39:24i'd come home from speaking things and he'd be all excited to learn and to know how it went and
39:29called me every day when i was gone sometimes many times a day usually as i was trying to get through
39:33security in the airport and i go honey it's not a good time i can't talk right now i'm being you know
39:38checked out so i've had that happen more than once too not a fun thing to do but ladies we should
39:47realize this is a this is a blessing to have a husband as a head recognize your weakness satan
39:55knew she would be easier to tempt than adam and so he did and and she fell into sin
39:59paul or peter even says we're the weaker vessel right we're the weaker vessel women should realize
40:07eve was the one who was deceived and because of that she should take a humble attitude now maybe all
40:12this sounds really bleak to you you wish you'd have gone to justin's lecture instead or nathan
40:17businitz or whoever else is teaching right now maybe this all sounds really bleak to you but my
40:22friend it's not paul leaves us with a wonderful outlook in verse 15 as he gives us the woman's
40:28calling look at it nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if she continues in faith love
40:33holiness with self-control now i will say this this is one of the most difficult verses in all of
40:40scripture to interpret and there's some really weird ones out there and i won't share those with
40:45you but paul says she will be saved through childbearing now we know for sure this does not
40:52mean salvific this does not mean a woman is saved eternally through childbearing otherwise all of you
41:00that can't have children are still single i guess you're sorry you're not going to get to go to
41:03heaven right we're no we know we are saved by grace alone through faith alone through christ alone
41:11the word salvation here is not salvific it means to be delivered there's two greek words for salvation
41:18this one means to be delivered to be set free now listen very carefully in other words women can be
41:27delivered from the stigma of eve's sin in the garden of eden by being set free through delivering
41:36children and raising them to the glory of god john macarthur says this the pain associated with
41:45childbirth was the punishment for the woman's sin but her joy and privilege of child rearing delivers
41:52women from the stigma of that sin in fact we don't have time to get into first timothy 5 but paul says
42:00later on i will there that the younger women marry bear children rule the house give no occasion for the
42:08adversary to speak reproachfully why because some of them have already turned aside to satan and they're
42:13wandering from house to house talking about things they shouldn't be talking about and so god's will
42:20for us as women is to marry bear children and rule the housewife so satan doesn't have anything to
42:26accuse of us and if we don't then we end up being idle and now we don't have to actually get our nike
42:31tennis shoes on and go next door to gossip to my next door neighbor i can do all this through my texting
42:37right and through twitter and instagram and all the other social medias out there ladies a christian
42:43woman's role is not to be a female pastor but to be a female parent by raising godly children
42:49she must however just like a man it's already been said this about the man look what he says
42:54continue in faith holiness with self-control faith holiness and self-control this triad here we don't
43:03have time to get back to first timothy uh the beginning of it but this is how paul started this
43:07epistle and this is how he is ending this this chapter this portion on the role of a woman faith would
43:15be her faith in the lord love would be her love to all and holiness would mean she's set apart
43:20and she does this with self-control you know that's one of the first things that an older woman is to
43:25teach a young woman according to titus 2 the older women are to teach young women first thing is to be
43:30self-controlled have a sound mind elizabeth elliott says that means to wiser up to her wifely duties
43:35to be sensible and so ladies we want to have love we want to have holiness but we want to do all of this
43:43with self-control a sound mind ladies this is a high calling and paul reiterates this as i mentioned
43:51in titus 2 so what is the woman's clothing in the church from verse 9 women are to dress in modest
43:58clothing and jewelry that is becoming the profession of her faith in christ what about you what about the
44:07way you come to dress to worship do you stop to look at yourself in the mirror and ask if what you
44:14are wearing pleases the lord would you dress in that manner if christ were going to visit your church
44:20this sunday morning well let me tell you he is are you secretly trying to draw attention to yourself by
44:28the way you dress and what about your what you're wearing right now are your jeans too tight is your blouse
44:35too low are you in attire right now that would attract a man to desire something in you that you
44:42cannot fulfill righteously do you purposely dress seductively in tight fitting clothes and low blouses
44:50to attract the attention of a man for those of you who are married you might ask your husband before you
44:56leave the house if you're appropriately dressed and again for those of you with daughters please
45:02make sure they're dressed appropriately martha peace has a book on her table over there in the exhibit
45:08hall called modestly modesty it's more than just clothes and i'd encourage you to buy that and go
45:15through it with your daughters the woman's character in the church verse 10 women are not to focus on
45:21their good looks but their good works how much time have you spent this past week focusing on your inner
45:27heart how much time have you spent in the word in prayer and with god's people in comparison to the
45:35time you've spent shopping or on pinterest facebook twitter and searching the internet how much time do
45:42you spend on the inner woman versus the outer woman what good works have you done for the master
45:48this week and thirdly the woman's conduct in the church verse 11 and 12 women are learned with all
45:55calmness and submission to those in authority over her are you guilty of overstepping your boundaries
46:01as it comes to this do you secretly wish you could be the preacher in the pulpit remember what the bible
46:08says if a man desires the office of a bishop he desires a good thing right that's another proof text
46:14for no women preachers next the woman's created order verses 13 14 have you embraced the god-given
46:23truth that women were created second for a purpose of being a helper to her husband do you dwell on the
46:31untruth that you are a second-class christian do you joy in the fact that god has created you to be a
46:38woman and by the way for those of you who are married are you being submissive to your husbands
46:44paul says in colossians were to be submissive to our husbands as is fitting in the lord paul says to the
46:50women in in ephesians we are to be submissive as unto the lord he is the head and even for those of
46:58you that are married to unbelievers uh peter says in first peter in the like manner you wise be in
47:04subjection to your own husbands that even if they don't obey the word you will win them without a
47:09word by your behavior of a meek and quiet spirit meek is strength under control and quiet just means
47:15calm and that's how you're going to win them i i had a joy i think it was a couple years ago is that
47:20the truth matters conference at the ark and uh had this man come up to me and i share this for you
47:26women who may be married unbelievers but uh he came up to me and he said are you susan heck and i said yes
47:31i am and he said i just want to tell you a story he said uh my wife watches your youtube channel
47:37and he said i became a christian by watching the changes in her life and uh he said so i just wanted
47:44to thank you and can i have a picture with you she won't believe you're here so it was kind of fun but
47:48but that's what even if you're married to an unbeliever and ladies even if you're married to
47:52a believer uh the best thing you can do as a wife is not only be submissive but have a behavior that
47:59is meek and quiet uh before i became a christian my husband used to remind me of the meaning of my
48:04name which is susan and he'd say tender lily tender lily the reminder that i wasn't very tender
48:10and uh so he was very patient with me bless his heart now he doesn't care about it anymore so
48:18all right now i've lost my place okay the woman's created order uh do you joy in the fact that god
48:27has created you to be a woman by the way and i mentioned that about those of you that are married
48:32um we are also to submit with a joyful heart i would say this unless our husbands ask us to send
48:38the word submission just means to place in an orderly fashion under i like what jay adams says
48:44the husband's the president the wife is the vice president the husband's a five-star general the wife
48:49is a four-star general ladies this does not mean you're a doormat it doesn't mean you don't make
48:54appeals and hopefully you're married to a man who's loving you the way christ loved the church
48:58and willing to discuss matters with you and you make decisions together but ultimately the final
49:04decision is his and i remember when after i became a believer and i had to learn submission
49:09because i was not submissive no one was going to tell me what to do especially my husband
49:13and even though my mother was a good role model i was not a very submissive wife and so when the lord
49:19saved me i had to really work on this and so i remember that often i would say to my husband i'd say
49:26could we pray about this for a few weeks and often he would say yes let's do that and then we'd come
49:31back together and talk about it again and and uh sometimes he would go ahead with his decision and
49:36sometimes he'd say no i think you're you've got the better decision and then when it was uh this
49:41decision was said and done and the thing had happened when he was right he'd come back and say
49:45i want to hear those words i love and that was he was right and i was wrong and then sometimes he'd say
49:52i wish i had to listen to you so i was like okay but hopefully you have a husband like that but
49:57you can make gracious appeals and ladies one area you do not submit in is if your husband ever asked
50:03you to sin you never submit you obey your lord over your husband there are ways to graciously
50:09talk to him when he asks you to sin but you never sin uh to obey your husband the woman's calling in
50:17verse 15 we're called to be delivered from the stigma of eve sin by rearing children to the glory of
50:23god and by continuing in faith love and holiness and we do all this with a serious mindset we're
50:28serious we're sober minded for those of you with children are you rearing your children to god's
50:34glory do you take your parenting seriously are you rearing your children in the nurture and
50:39admonition of christ in fact paul mentions later in this letter that he as i mentioned wants young
50:45women to marry bear children and rule the house and he tells why ladies marriage should be the desire
50:51of all women unless god has called you to be single and just a reminder i have to say this marriage is
50:57between a man and a woman not a man and a man not a woman and a woman not not a woman and a dog not
51:04you know in oklahoma now we've got uh litter boxes in our schools for the children that want to be kitty
51:10cats so it's not even between a man and a kitty cat man marriage is between a man and a woman
51:16it should also be our desire to bear children and manage our homes we should desire to be diligent
51:24as the proverbs 31 woman she looked well to the ways of her household she did not eat the bread of
51:29idleness does your life exhibit faith love and holiness as paul mentions in first timothy 2 15
51:36would others say about you that you have your senses about you you're sober minded you're calm in your
51:43spirit well instead of being known as women with bobbed hair who are bossy wives and women preachers
51:49how about we be known as women who properly dress perform godly and produce children let's pray
51:58our father in heaven we love you ever so much we are so thankful to be calling you our father
52:06thank you for this joy of what you've called us to do as women not only in the church but in the
52:13home what a high calling what a privilege thank you for making us women we pray for our husbands and
52:20all the men that are here lord they have the harder job to love us the way christ loved the church i don't
52:25know how they do that the high calling for them too and so i pray that we would be worthy of their love
52:33and their affection that we would be doing good to them and not evil all the days of their life lord
52:38that we would count it a joy and a privilege to rear our children for the glory of god and for his
52:44kingdom so father bless in the remainder of our time again thank you for these ladies patience and i
52:51know some of them squished in together just give them a good rest of their day and evening and father
52:57good rest tonight so we'll be fresh tomorrow to come back and to worship and to fellowship with like-minded
53:03believers again we love you and we thank you in christ's name
53:08you
