00:00Good. Well, let's turn to the scriptures and to Acts and chapter 16, the conversion of Lydia.
00:30Acts 16, if you are there.
00:46I begin reading from verse 11.
00:51So setting sail from Troas, we made a direct voyage to Samothrace.
00:58And the following day to Neapolis.
01:03And from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony.
01:12We remained in this city some days.
01:16And on the Sabbath day, we went outside the gate to the riverside where we supposed there was a place of prayer.
01:24And we sat down and spoke to the women who had come together.
01:29One who heard us was a woman named Lydia from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods who was a worshiper of God.
01:42The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul.
01:50And after she was baptized and a household as well, she urged us saying,
01:57If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.
02:04And she prevailed upon us.
02:08Yesterday, I preached on the subject of the worshiping church.
02:15And I argued for the fact that worship is the greatest activity that any human being can engage in.
02:26That's why God created the universe.
02:32It was that he might reveal who he is.
02:35And in revealing who he is, that he would cause us to be inspired to recognize him in praise, adoration, and worship.
02:50But also, that's the reason why he has recreated us in the person of his son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
02:59It is in order that we might be worshippers of God, including the ingredient of grace and mercy,
03:14recognizing something of those attributes of God,
03:19because we know where we ought to have been if God was only a God of justice and righteousness.
03:31And that's the reason for missions.
03:34Primarily, in order to get the knowledge of God to fill the earth as the waters cover the sea.
03:44And that as the nations get to know this God, they may indeed worship him.
03:52Hence, John Piper's classic statement that is to the effect,
03:57missions exists because worship does not, is true.
04:05That ought to be the engine that drives the missions enterprise.
04:11It is that a people that ought to be worshipping the true and living God
04:19are instead ascribing to rocks and to idols that they have made as their deities.
04:29And to say to them, no, God has overlooked such ignorance.
04:35He is now demanding, commanding all men everywhere to turn to him as the true God
04:43in genuine repentance and faith.
04:48And in many ways, that's the reason why the subject before us this evening is so important.
04:55That of asking the question,
04:59should we be busy making disciples or simply join the latest fad of bringing in anything
05:12into the fold that works on four legs, gods included?
05:19Just for the sake of numbers, should we go through all the current that beats against us?
05:35Should we weather the storm of the popular opinion of the day
05:42and insist on the fact that only true disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ,
05:51only those who are converted to him should be part and parcel of the Christian church?
06:00Why suffer for it when indeed we can boast of thousands upon thousands of people
06:09in our churches by simply opening the door wider?
06:15Well, the command of the Lord Jesus Christ was obviously very clear from Matthew and chapter 28.
06:23He said,
06:24All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
06:28Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations.
06:32In other words, initiating them into this localized entity called the church
06:49and then teaching them to obey or to observe everything that I have commanded you.
06:58That's what Jesus said.
07:00The head of the church before he left to go to heaven.
07:07How did the New Testament church carry this out?
07:14Did they simply say,
07:15Well, you know, we do need to earn a living
07:20through the giving of individuals in the church
07:25and therefore let's simply bring in the numbers?
07:28Did they think in terms of wanting to make a name for themselves?
07:34That they are the individuals that are drawing the crowds
07:39and consequently in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and wherever it is they went,
07:46they simply had an attractive enough message to bring in the crowds?
07:51Or were they unflinchingly committed to making disciples?
08:04That unless men and women are converted,
08:09they cannot be party to what we are doing.
08:13What do we read?
08:15Well, clearly the best place to look in understanding the mission of the church
08:21is the book of Acts.
08:23If we're going to see the way in which the New Testament church
08:27then carried out the mandate of the Lord Jesus Christ.
08:33One way for me to handle this would have been to give us a bird's eye view
08:39of the whole of that book.
08:45However, I felt that that would really be demanding on us
08:53and would be missing out on depth.
08:57So I opted to instead go to one instance.
09:04To a situation where we will see details
09:11that will enable us to dig deeper.
09:14And in digging deeper, help us to come away with greater convictions
09:22to hang in there despite the current popular fad around us.
09:34And hence, I thought we could look at the conversion of Lydia
09:37and basically learn a few lessons from there.
09:44And the very first lesson that we learn from this passage
09:48is the kind of people who need to be converted to Christ
09:56before being welcomed into the body of Christ.
10:02Now the obvious answer is that the kind of people
10:07is simply every kind of people.
10:11some individuals before their conversion
10:16live utterly godless lives.
10:21They are well known for their sinfulness.
10:27They are famous for their degradation.
10:31The kind of lives they live,
10:35their lives that are lived in the sewer of society.
10:41While others, still unconverted,
10:46live lives that are socially good and religious.
10:53And what we have in our text before us here
10:56is somebody who is in the second category.
11:01Lydia.
11:01And the point I want to emphasize here
11:05is that both of them need to be converted.
11:11It's not just the individuals
11:14that are given to sexual immorality,
11:17to drugs, to crime.
11:20Perhaps they've even been imprisoned because of that
11:23that we should be looking at and saying,
11:25you know, those people need to change
11:28before they can be an integral part of the Christian church.
11:35It is even those who are religious,
11:40those who are civilized in their outward form.
11:47Lydia here in our text is described in this way.
11:51That one who heard us was a woman named Lydia
12:01from the city of Thyatira,
12:04a seller of purple goods,
12:07who was a worshiper of God.
12:12Two things about her.
12:15First of all, she was a businesswoman.
12:17And the fact that she is described as
12:23a seller of purple goods
12:27immediately tells you
12:29that she was not on the bottom end of business.
12:35She was the kind of woman
12:37who was dealing with expensive merchandise.
12:44Purple in those days
12:46was not as easily available
12:49as it is today.
12:52Its sauce
12:53was in shells,
12:56in the seas,
12:58and consequently,
13:00it was a color
13:02that was often left for royalty
13:05or at least
13:06those who were very rich.
13:11So clearly,
13:12this was no easy
13:14run-off-the-mill kind of woman.
13:18She was the kind of person
13:20who lived among the well-to-do
13:23with the kind of society
13:28that is also living
13:31sometimes in the corridors of power,
13:34but certainly where the money is.
13:37Secondly,
13:40she was a worshiper of God,
13:45we are told.
13:47Now, that's a technical phrase
13:49that is being used there.
13:51It's not simply suggesting
13:53that she worshipped
13:55some form of deity,
13:58but rather what it means
14:00is that she was a Gentile
14:03that was
14:05aligned with
14:07the Jewish tradition.
14:10She
14:11was
14:12within
14:13Judaism,
14:15but not
14:16a Jew.
14:18She
14:19would be gathered
14:21with those who were
14:22either Jews
14:23or not Jews,
14:24but were
14:25worshipping
14:26Jehovah.
14:27So,
14:29if there was
14:30the temple
14:31in Jerusalem,
14:32she would be
14:33in the outer court.
14:34If there was
14:36a synagogue,
14:37she would also
14:38be there.
14:40And in this
14:41particular case
14:42in Philippi,
14:43the suggestion
14:44is that
14:45they did not
14:46yet have
14:47a community
14:48of Jews
14:49that would
14:50then put up
14:51a synagogue.
14:53And so,
14:54the place
14:54of prayer
14:55was outside
14:56the city.
14:57And that's
14:58where
14:58Paul
14:59and his
15:00colleagues
15:01went
15:02to look
15:03for
15:03this group
15:04in order
15:05to bring
15:06the gospel
15:06to them.
15:08So,
15:09she was
15:10religious.
15:11She was
15:12religious
15:12within
15:13the outward
15:14confines
15:16of
15:17Judaism.
15:19The people
15:20that worshipped
15:21Jehovah,
15:23she
15:23was
15:24there.
15:24But here
15:29is the
15:29point.
15:30She was
15:31unconverted.
15:33She was
15:34still dead
15:35in her
15:36sins.
15:38From the
15:39perspective
15:40of whether
15:42if she died
15:43in that
15:44moment,
15:45she would
15:45be welcomed
15:46by God
15:47or she
15:48would be
15:48punished
15:49for her
15:49sins,
15:50the answer
15:51is simple.
15:52She would
15:53have been
15:53punished
15:53for her
15:54sins.
15:57Therefore,
15:58she needed
15:59Christ.
16:01And I
16:02think it's
16:03important
16:03for us
16:04as we
16:05tackle this
16:06question
16:07to face
16:08this reality.
16:10Because
16:11often the
16:12issue is,
16:14well,
16:14look,
16:14these people
16:15come to
16:16church.
16:17This person
16:18is interested
16:20somehow
16:21in what
16:22we're
16:22doing
16:23here.
16:24Surely,
16:25if we
16:26don't
16:26bring
16:27them
16:27in,
16:27we may
16:28lose
16:29them.
16:32And so
16:33it's not a
16:34question of
16:34whether they
16:35have been
16:35genuinely
16:36converted
16:37or not.
16:38It is the
16:39fact that we
16:40don't want
16:41to lose
16:41them.
16:42We don't
16:42want to be
16:43offensive to
16:44them.
16:45Therefore,
16:46if they are
16:47asking for
16:48membership,
16:49let's not put
16:50up barriers,
16:52let's bring
16:53them in.
16:55The ones
16:56that we
16:56should be
16:57closing the
16:57door to
16:58are those
16:59whose lives
17:00are scandalous.
17:03The ones
17:04who are
17:05living in
17:05open
17:06sin.
17:08The ones
17:10who are
17:11infant
17:12defilers,
17:14rapists,
17:16criminals,
17:17those are
17:18the ones
17:19that we
17:20should be
17:21closing the
17:22door to.
17:24The point
17:25is,
17:26what we
17:27learn from
17:28this example
17:29is that
17:31it is
17:32possible
17:33for an
17:35individual
17:36to be
17:37near the
17:38kingdom,
17:39but outside.
17:45Almost
17:45there,
17:46but not
17:48there.
17:52And those
17:53of us
17:54who have
17:55got the
17:55keys as
17:56it were
17:57of the
17:57kingdom,
17:58those of
17:58us who
17:59are at
17:59the door
18:00of membership
18:01for the
18:02church,
18:03those of
18:03us who
18:04guard
18:05as it
18:05were the
18:06flock
18:07that are
18:07on the
18:08inside,
18:09we should
18:10not simply
18:11conclude
18:11because
18:12people
18:13are
18:14regular
18:15enough
18:15in the
18:16place
18:17of
18:17worship
18:17that
18:19therefore,
18:20if they
18:21want
18:21membership,
18:23they ought
18:23to come
18:23in.
18:25Because it
18:26is when
18:26we do
18:26this that
18:28we often
18:29end up
18:29baptizing
18:31gods.
18:36Let's
18:36proceed.
18:39Because the
18:39other lesson
18:40we learn
18:41here is
18:42that there's
18:42only one
18:43way of
18:43salvation.
18:44Only one.
18:47And it
18:47is this.
18:48The Lord
18:50has to
18:50open a
18:51person's
18:52heart to
18:53respond to
18:54the gospel.
18:56That's the
18:56only way.
18:58If the
18:59Lord hasn't
18:59done that,
19:02you can
19:03teach the
19:05individuals
19:05the way
19:07of the
19:08kingdom,
19:10bring them
19:11in.
19:12They will
19:13still be
19:14on their
19:15way to
19:15hell.
19:16To
19:17borrow the
19:17words of
19:18the Bible,
19:19they will
19:19still be
19:19dead in
19:21their sins.
19:23Look at
19:24what happened
19:24to Lydia.
19:25Back to
19:26her text.
19:29The Bible
19:30says,
19:32this 14,
19:33one who
19:34heard us
19:35was a
19:35woman named
19:36Lydia from
19:37the city of
19:37Thyatira,
19:38a seller of
19:39paper goods,
19:40who was a
19:40worshiper of
19:41God.
19:42And here is
19:43a statement.
19:44The Lord
19:45opened her
19:46heart to
19:48pay attention
19:49to what was
19:50said by
19:52Paul.
19:54The Lord
19:55opened her
19:56heart.
19:56and that
19:59opening is
20:01a supernatural
20:03work of
20:04God.
20:06It's a
20:07supernatural
20:07work of
20:08God in
20:09the human
20:10soul that
20:11makes you
20:11conscious of
20:13what previously
20:14you were
20:15totally
20:16oblivious to.
20:19Let me put it
20:20this way.
20:21every human
20:24being born
20:26into this
20:27world is
20:28born
20:29spiritually
20:30dead.
20:35Not
20:36spiritually
20:37fainted,
20:42spiritually in
20:44some kind
20:45of coma,
20:47but
20:47spiritually
20:48dead.
20:51In other
20:53words,
20:54there is
20:55no
20:56relationship
20:58at a
20:59spiritual
20:59level
21:00between
21:01this
21:01individual
21:02and
21:03God,
21:04his
21:05maker.
21:06More than
21:07that,
21:08there is
21:08an enmity
21:10in the
21:11soul
21:11against
21:12the real
21:14God of
21:15heaven.
21:18That's
21:19the state
21:19we refer
21:20to it
21:21as being
21:22totally
21:23depraved.
21:25And yes,
21:27there might
21:27be outward
21:29good
21:30given by
21:31God
21:32through his
21:33common
21:33grace,
21:34but we
21:34must never
21:35lose sight
21:36of the
21:37fact that
21:38when push
21:39comes to
21:40shove,
21:41and this
21:42individual
21:43has to
21:44face the
21:44real God
21:45of heaven,
21:47he will
21:47hiss,
21:48he will
21:49bite,
21:50he will
21:50kick,
21:51because of
21:54being
21:55spiritually
21:56dead.
22:01The Bible
22:02teaches this
22:03again and
22:05again.
22:06Ephesians 2
22:07is an obvious
22:08example.
22:10Paul referring
22:11to the
22:11believers,
22:13he says
22:14about them
22:15that once
22:15upon a
22:16time,
22:17you were
22:18dead in
22:20your
22:20trespasses
22:22and sins,
22:23in which
22:24you once
22:24lived,
22:26following the
22:27ways of
22:27the world,
22:29following the
22:31spirit who
22:32is at work
22:33in the
22:34sons of
22:34disobedience,
22:36and indeed
22:37following the
22:38desires of
22:39your own
22:40fallen
22:41nature,
22:42spiritually
22:43dead.
22:48We need
22:49to face
22:49this,
22:52that those
22:53apparently
22:54civilized,
22:57well-respected,
23:01religious
23:02individuals,
23:05who are
23:06not yet
23:07converted,
23:09through
23:10repentance
23:11and faith
23:12in Christ,
23:14that they
23:14are dead.
23:20And so
23:21it's not an
23:21issue of
23:22simply speaking
23:23to them
23:23nicely,
23:24being with
23:25them in
23:26church a
23:27few more
23:27weeks and
23:28a few more
23:28months,
23:29and they'll
23:29slowly turn
23:30and turn
23:31and become
23:32a little
23:32more of
23:33what we
23:33want them
23:34to be.
23:36It's not
23:37Christianizing
23:38them.
23:39They are
23:40spiritually
23:42dead.
23:45Until
23:46God
23:48miraculously
23:50and
23:51supernaturally
23:52opens
23:53their
23:54eyes
23:55to
23:58understand
23:58the
23:59gospel.
24:01Only
24:01then will
24:02they begin
24:03to appreciate
24:04what is
24:04going on.
24:05Apostle
24:07Paul
24:07refers to
24:08this in
24:092 Corinthians
24:10chapter 4
24:11when he
24:12says the
24:13God who
24:14said,
24:15let there
24:15be light,
24:16and there
24:17was light,
24:19caused
24:20the light
24:21of the
24:22knowledge
24:23of the
24:24glory of
24:24God in
24:26the face
24:26of Jesus
24:27Christ to
24:28shine in
24:29our hearts.
24:30that's
24:33the same
24:33issue
24:33here.
24:34That's
24:34what
24:34Dr.
24:36Luke
24:36is
24:37describing
24:37as
24:38God
24:38opening
24:39the
24:40heart
24:41of
24:41Lydia.
24:43It
24:43is
24:43this
24:43infusion
24:45of
24:45spiritual
24:46life
24:46through
24:47regeneration.
24:48It
24:48is
24:49this
24:49work
24:49of
24:50God
24:50that
24:51enables
24:52an
24:52individual
24:53who
24:54previously
24:55was
24:56dead
24:57to
24:59now
24:59suddenly
24:59come
25:00alive.
25:02This
25:02Charles

25:05imprisoned
25:06spirit
25:07lay

30:53travel
30:54economy
