00:00One statement I love to make when a conference comes to an end such as this, it's the statement
00:12all good things come to an end except heaven. And for today that's even more relevant because
00:23I am dealing with the topic of the return of Christ. Let me invite you to turn to the Acts
00:32of the Apostles, Acts and chapter 1. We will read from verse 6 down to verse 11. And as
00:46you do so, really I'm speaking on behalf of my fellow speakers at this conference that
00:54we've not only appreciated the opportunity to be with you in fellowship and to minister
01:00in this way, but also to experience something of the feedback that we have received from
01:10a number of you as we have been mingling. It's clear we are among friends. We are among
01:15the brethren in the Lord. And I'd like to encourage you with that sweet spirit that you might
01:25continue in the same way. Acts chapter 1 and commencing with verse 6.
01:37So when they had come together, they asked him, Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom
01:46to Israel? He said to them, it is not for you to know times or seasons that the father has
01:55fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you
02:03and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.
02:14And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up and a cloud took him out of their sight.
02:25And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in
02:34white robes and said, men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus who was taken up from you
02:46into heaven will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.
02:57Well, brethren, as we come to the end of quite a feast of looking in from various angles at the theme
03:08of remembering Jesus Christ, we finally come to remembering him in terms of his second coming
03:20or his return. I was joking with the previous speaker that really perhaps we ought to have swapped places
03:32because as I was listening to him opening up the marriage feast of the Lamb in heaven,
03:40I thought we've arrived. We've arrived. I'm in heaven. There we are, experiencing something
03:46of the sublime goodness of God in our final destination. But I think it's only right that having
03:56looked at that, we now start thinking in terms of the departure lounge, that point where we'd finally
04:05take off and go to enjoy something of what has been spoken about. It's crucial for us to realize that
04:15the subject of the second coming of Christ is not a side topic to be engaged in by those who are either
04:25curious or have perhaps a little more of a desire to study eschatology or, you know, those who really just want
04:35to delve into something that lacks practical significance. It's of the very warp and woof of the Christian life.
04:46When you think about the Christian faith, it has a sense of movement. It has a sense of direction.
04:55And there is that point that the Christian life moves towards like the tip of a spear. And there is
05:08the return of our Lord. For instance, when the Apostle Paul describes the grace of God that has come to us
05:20in our salvation, that teaches us to say no to all ungodliness and worldly passions, writing to Titus,
05:30this is the way he puts it. Titus 2 and verse 11,
05:35for the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people.
05:40And you remember, I spoke about all people without distinction rather than without exception.
05:47Training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions and to live self-controlled, upright,
05:55and godly lives in the present age. Now listen to this.
06:00Waiting for our blessed hope. And what is that?
06:07The appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.
06:14That's the way in which Paul perceived the Christian faith.
06:21That it is one of an active waiting.
06:25Waiting for the return of our Lord and Savior.
06:30And it is our hope.
06:33Our blessed hope.
06:36Or, as he puts it, with respect to the testimony of the Thessalonians.
06:43After Paul had ministered there and many of them had come to faith in Christ.
06:50Listen to the way in which he describes them in 1 Thessalonians 1.
06:56He says there in verse 9,
06:58For they themselves, talking about people around Macedonia, where he is going, evangelizing,
07:06and what they have heard concerning the work in Thessalonica.
07:11For they themselves report concerning us, the kind of reception we had among you,
07:17and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God,
07:24and here it is, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead,
07:31Jesus, who delivered us, or who delivers us from the wrath to come.
07:37Again, you can see that it was the common testimony of the people of God in Thessalonica
07:46that people picked up and were reporting elsewhere.
07:51That here are a people who are waiting for a Savior.
07:58His second coming.
08:01If I could throw in one more, and it's our Lord's Supper that I trust you participate in fairly regularly.
08:10And the Apostle Paul, referring to that, puts it this way,
08:16that whenever we participate in the breaking of bread or the Lord's Supper,
08:22we proclaim the Lord's death, and then he adds, until he comes.
08:29So we have that view that his death is not the end.
08:35His resurrection is not the end.
08:37His ascension is not the end.
08:41This Jesus, to borrow the words of Acts again,
08:45whom we have seen going up in this way, will return.
08:51And for the Lord's Supper imagery, that's even more important,
08:57because it was meant to be a picture of what would happen at a betrothal.
09:06Again, going back to the earlier image of the wedding feast of the Lamb.
09:10When a young man engaged a young lady for marriage,
09:16he would then, on that occasion, drink together with her the fruit of the vine
09:25as part of that engagement.
09:28And then he would go to prepare a home where finally he would come back to get her
09:37so that he can take her to his matrimonial home.
09:41So the very fact that they've had this meal together says to her,
09:47my bridegroom is coming back.
09:51It's not simply enjoying the meal, but it is bringing out this truth
09:58that someone has made this promise to me, an all-important promise.
10:05So between now and then, I live in this hope, in this anticipation,
10:12that I will hear the cry in the streets before long,
10:16the bridegroom is here, the bridegroom is here,
10:19and I know I'm packing up and going on into my marriage.
10:25Well, that's really the picture that the Lord's Supper should bring to us
10:30every time we have it.
10:33We are a people in anticipation,
10:37a people in genuine expectancy.
10:40Our bridegroom is coming back to take us home.
10:48Now, as we get back to this occasion at the beginning of the book of Acts,
10:55I think we need to enter into the shoes of these brethren.
11:01On one hand, they had gone through the most traumatic experience
11:07when they had seen their Savior nailed to the cross,
11:14finally expire, put into a tomb.
11:20Well, there was some moment of excitement
11:22when they now were able to see him again for about 40 days.
11:27They mingled with him.
11:30They had become disillusioned, depressed.
11:33Some of them had gone back to their previous professions
11:35and so on, catching fish.
11:38Now, he's come back.
11:42And then, there they are seeing him with their own eyes
11:47going through the sky, through the clouds, gone.
11:55You can understand why they were still looking.
12:00It's gone.
12:01That hope that we had, that we'll be with him longer,
12:08he's gone.
12:13And then, two angels standing among them
12:17tell them this fact
12:22that this Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven
12:29will come in the same way
12:33as you saw him go into heaven.
12:36They were given this promise,
12:40this promise to hang on to.
12:44He died.
12:45He came again briefly.
12:47He's gone.
12:48He will return.
12:52And what I want us to do
12:53is to look at a number of facts concerning this.
12:56First of all,
12:57I want us to look at the certainty of his coming,
13:01then the timing,
13:02the content,
13:04the purpose,
13:05and at least two implications of this,
13:09and we are done.
13:11First of all,
13:13the certainty of his coming.
13:16that's what these two men
13:19standing by them in white robes
13:22would be saying to them.
13:24He's basically saying,
13:26or they are basically saying,
13:28take it from us
13:29that he is coming again.
13:36The basic point that I want to bring out there
13:38is that,
13:40in fact,
13:40when you read the Old Testament,
13:43and, of course,
13:43the new,
13:44as we'll be doing in a few minutes,
13:46over and over and over again,
13:49this thought is brought out
13:51that there were to be two comings
13:55of the good man into the world.
13:59There was the first,
14:01which we studied in the incarnation
14:04and his final death
14:07and resurrection and so on.
14:08There was that,
14:10but there was also,
14:13literally,
14:14side by side in the Bible,
14:16across the Old Testament,
14:18the fact that
14:19he's also going to come
14:22in another way.
14:24And especially,
14:26coming in power,
14:30in victory,
14:32in a way in which
14:33he will destroy
14:35all the enemies of his people.
14:38In fact,
14:40one of the reasons
14:41why Jesus was rejected
14:44in his first coming
14:46was because so many individuals,
14:49in reading the Old Testament,
14:51limited themselves
14:53to the second coming.
14:55And so,
14:56as far as they were concerned,
14:57it doesn't make sense
14:58that this great champion
15:01and captain
15:02of the Lord's people
15:04should now be hanging on a cross
15:07in complete shame
15:09and weakness
15:10and so forth.
15:11It didn't tie up with them.
15:14And yet,
15:15as far as the Bible is concerned,
15:17the two went together.
15:21Let me just quickly show that to you
15:22from Isaiah
15:23and not so much chapter 53,
15:27which also has a lot of information there,
15:30but chapter 52
15:31before going into chapter 53.
15:35I want you to notice
15:36these two together.
15:39Isaiah 52
15:40and verse 13.
15:42Behold,
15:43my servant
15:44shall act wisely.
15:46He shall be
15:47high
15:47and lifted up
15:49and shall be
15:51exalted.
15:53As many
15:54were astonished
15:56at you,
15:56now listen to this,
15:57his appearance
15:59was so
16:00marred
16:01beyond human
16:02semblance
16:03and his form
16:04beyond that
16:05of the children
16:06of mankind,
16:07so that's to do
16:08with his first coming
16:09and the
16:11extent
16:12of his suffering.
16:14We saw that
16:15in his death.
16:16But listen to verse 15.
16:19So
16:19shall
16:20he sprinkle
16:21many nations.
16:22Kings
16:23shall
16:24shut
16:24their mouths
16:26because of him.
16:27for that
16:28which has not
16:29been told
16:30them
16:30they see
16:31and that
16:32which they have
16:33not heard
16:33they understand.
16:36And then of course
16:36chapter 53
16:37opens up
16:38that topic.
16:40But the thing
16:40I want you to notice
16:41there is the way
16:42in which
16:43the prophet Isaiah
16:44literally puts
16:46these two
16:46next to each
16:48other.
16:49And one of the
16:50reasons why
16:51is as has been
16:52said,
16:53there was this
16:54prophetic
16:55view
16:56across the
16:57landscape
16:58of time
16:58that saw
17:00the first
17:01coming
17:01and the second
17:02coming
17:02as though
17:03they were
17:03next to
17:04each other.
17:06And so
17:06as the prophet
17:07would look
17:08he would
17:08see
17:09Christ
17:10in his first
17:10coming
17:11see Christ
17:12in his second
17:13coming
17:13and make it
17:14look as though
17:15it was really
17:16just a year
17:17or two
17:18between the
17:19two events.
17:20now here's
17:22my point
17:23the same
17:25prophets
17:26who prophesied
17:28his first
17:29coming
17:29prophesied
17:31the second
17:32and they
17:35prophesied
17:36the first
17:36coming
17:37with such
17:38detail
17:39such
17:40minutest
17:41detail
17:42that you
17:44would think
17:44these individuals
17:46lived in the
17:47days of
17:47Jesus
17:48and then
17:49simply
17:50wrote
17:50as though
17:51they lived
17:51much
17:51much
17:52earlier.
17:54Now
17:54brethren
17:55if the
17:56prophets
17:57were so
17:59correct
18:00on the
18:01first
18:01coming
18:01why
18:03would
18:04you
18:04even
18:05entertain
18:05the
18:06thought
18:07that they
18:07would be
18:08wrong
18:08on the
18:09second
18:09coming
18:09why
18:10if they
18:13have
18:13proved
18:14as Isaiah
18:15does
18:16in chapter
18:1653
18:17so much
18:19detail
18:20concerning
18:21the life
18:22the death
18:23the resurrection
18:24of Christ
18:25well we
18:27have every
18:28reason to
18:29believe
18:29they should
18:30be right
18:31on the
18:32fact
18:32he is
18:33coming
18:34again.
18:36So I'd
18:37like to give
18:37that to you
18:38as a
18:39simple
18:40argument
18:41a logical
18:41argument
18:42that should
18:43undergird
18:44your faith
18:45that our
18:47savior
18:47is truly
18:48coming
18:49again
18:50and when
18:52Jesus Christ
18:53was here
18:54on earth
18:54you will
18:55recall
18:55how
18:56especially
18:57towards the
18:58end of
18:58his life
18:59he shifted
19:01in emphasis
19:02in terms of
19:03what he was
19:04often speaking
19:05about.
19:06He often
19:07as we shall
19:08see in a
19:09few minutes
19:09spoke about
19:11that same
19:12second coming.
19:14Now here
19:14is the one
19:15who has
19:16already
19:17proved
19:17himself
19:18to be
19:20true
19:21in
19:22every way
19:23and now
19:25he is
19:26deliberately
19:27over and
19:29over again
19:30speaking about
19:32his
19:34second coming.
19:35surely
19:36we should
19:37rest in
19:38the fact
19:38that this
19:39is
19:40certain.
19:42But secondly
19:43what about
19:44the timing?
19:45What about
19:45the timing?
19:47Well let me
19:47draw your
19:48attention to
19:49Matthew
19:49and chapter
19:5024
19:50Matthew 24
19:52because
19:53they
19:54in a sense
19:55he was
19:56asked a
19:56question
19:57to that
19:57effect
19:58about
19:59the sign
20:01of his
20:01coming
20:02morning and
20:02also about
20:03the end
20:04of the
20:05age.
20:07And the
20:07thing that I
20:08want you to
20:08notice as we
20:09peep at
20:09Matthew chapter
20:1024 is the
20:12fact that
20:13the Bible
20:15and indeed
20:16our Savior
20:16here speaks
20:18about a
20:18number of
20:19major events
20:20that were
20:21to precede
20:23his return.
20:25And he
20:26speaks about
20:26wars,
20:27we shall see
20:27that,
20:28about natural
20:28disasters,
20:30about apostasy,
20:31about the
20:32persecution,
20:33major persecution
20:34that would be
20:35coming upon
20:37his people.
20:39Matthew 24
20:40and verse
20:403
20:41As he
20:43sat on
20:44the Mount
20:44of Olives
20:45the disciples
20:47came to him
20:48privately
20:49saying,
20:50tell us
20:50when will
20:51these things
20:52be?
20:53And what
20:54will be the
20:55sign of
20:56your coming?
20:58So clearly
20:58they understood
20:59that he had
21:00been saying
21:01to them,
21:02I'm going
21:02but I
21:04will come
21:05back.
21:07And in
21:07coming back
21:08I'm bringing
21:09certain things
21:10to a clause
21:11as they're going
21:12to say here
21:13and of the
21:14end of
21:15the age.
21:17Well Jesus
21:17initially speaks
21:18here about
21:19the level
21:21of deception
21:22that would be
21:22there,
21:23verse 4
21:23and just
21:24answered them,
21:25see that no
21:26one leads
21:27you astray.
21:27for many
21:29will come
21:29in my name
21:30saying
21:31I am
21:32the Christ
21:33and they
21:33will lead
21:34many
21:35astray.
21:37And then
21:37he speaks
21:37about wars
21:38and you
21:38will hear
21:39of wars
21:40and rumors
21:41of wars.
21:42See that
21:42you are not
21:43alarmed
21:43for this
21:44must take
21:44place
21:45but the
21:46end
21:46is not
21:48yet.
21:49Speaks
21:49about nation
21:50rising
21:51against nation,
21:52kingdom
21:53against kingdom
21:54and then
21:55he also
21:55adds in
21:56natural
21:57disasters
21:58and there
21:59will be
21:59famines
22:00and earthquakes
22:01in various
22:02places.
22:04All these
22:04are but
22:05the beginning
22:06of the
22:08birth pains.
22:10He deals
22:10with not
22:12only the
22:12persecution
22:13that would
22:14be happening
22:14but also
22:16the betrayal
22:18that would
22:19take place
22:19among God's
22:20people
22:21and those
22:22that would
22:23the general
22:24apostasy.
22:25Verse 9
22:25Then they
22:27will deliver
22:28you up
22:28to tribulation
22:29and put
22:30you to
22:31death
22:31and you
22:32will be
22:32hated
22:33by all
22:33nations
22:34for my
22:35name's
22:36sake.
22:36And then
22:37many
22:37will fall
22:39away
22:39and betray
22:40one another
22:41and hate
22:42one another.
22:43And then
22:43he goes
22:44back to
22:44the false
22:45prophets
22:46and so on.
22:47But verse
22:4814
22:48and this
22:50gospel of
22:51the kingdom
22:52will be
22:53proclaimed
22:53throughout
22:54the whole
22:55world
22:56as a
22:56testimony
22:57to all
22:57nations
22:57and then
22:59the end
23:00will come.
23:02So the
23:03Lord says
23:03quite a
23:04number of
23:05things that
23:06generally
23:07give a
23:08sense of
23:09this is
23:11the eve
23:12of his
23:14coming.
23:16However
23:16the same
23:17Lord Jesus
23:18is concerned
23:19that we
23:21don't get
23:22carried away
23:23with trying
23:24to find
23:25the exact
23:26point in
23:28history
23:29where we
23:30can say
23:31aha
23:312024
23:33July
23:34he is
23:37coming
23:38back.
23:40And so
23:40he speaks
23:41in terms
23:42of
23:42coming
23:43like a
23:45thief
23:45in
23:46the
23:47night.
23:49In
23:49this
23:50same
23:51chapter
23:51he says
23:52I've
23:53skipped
23:53quite a
23:54bit.
23:54Let's
23:54go to
23:54verse 36
23:56verse 36
23:57but
23:59concerning
23:59the day
24:00and hour
24:02no one
24:03knows.
24:06Not
24:06even the
24:07angels
24:08of heaven
24:08nor the
24:10son
24:11but
24:12the
24:13father
24:13only.
24:15For
24:16us
24:16were the
24:17days of
24:18Noah
24:18so will
24:19be the
24:19coming
24:20of the
24:21son of
24:21man.
24:22people
24:23eating
24:24and
24:24drinking
24:25and
24:25marrying
24:26and being
24:26given
24:27in
24:27marriage
24:27and so
24:28on
24:28until
24:29the
24:30end
24:30comes.
24:31And so

25:38a
25:39general
25:39sense
25:40but
25:41warns
25:41against
25:42any
25:43attempt
25:44to
25:44pin
25:45it
25:45down
25:46to
25:46a
25:47year
25:47to
25:48a
25:48month
25:49or
25:49to
25:49a
25:50day
25:50he
25:51is
25:51coming
25:52like
25:52a
25:53thief
25:54not
25:54that
25:55he's
25:55coming
25:55secretly
25:56in
25:56that
25:57sense
25:57but
25:58he's
25:58coming
25:58in
25:59a
25:59way
25:59to
26:00take

26:03surprise
