00:00Beckett is an eight-year-old boy who, at just eight weeks old, was violently shaken,
00:24leaving him with shaken baby syndrome.
00:26He was violently shaken by a parent figure, somebody that should have really been protecting
00:32Beckett, but lost their temper, and instead of putting Beckett down in a safe place, Beckett
00:38was violently shaken, and this is the end result.
00:42Most babies that are shaken do not survive or are typically bedridden.
00:47Lucky for us, even though Beckett has 90% brain damage, including his brain stem, Beckett's
00:55doing really well.
00:56He is unable to walk, he is quadriplegic CP, he's G-tube fed, he's epileptic, but he's
01:03really, really doing well for all of the obstacles that he has had to climb.
01:08Even though his condition was stable, the fear of something going wrong kept her up at night.
01:12Just reassuring myself before I go to bed, everything needs to be in its correct spot.
01:21Stethoscope, monitors, crash bag, emergency meds.
01:29Everything that we need is right where it belongs for easy access.
01:34But how sad is it that this is Beckett's life, yet he was born very, very healthy.
01:41We did adopt Beckett.
01:43We picked him up at eight weeks old from the hospital as a foster child, and we were able
01:48to adopt him just shortly after his second birthday.
01:51But he has been with us since he was eight weeks old.
01:55She has now made it a mission to educate and spread awareness on her son's condition.
01:59When I'm doing this, or I'm doing this, or I'm even doing this, I am in no way, shape,
02:07or form violently shaking this baby or doing anything that is going to cause the symptoms
02:14and reality of what's happened to my son.
02:17Violently shaking a baby to cause brain damage to classify as a TBI or a shaken baby requires
02:27a tremendous amount of force.
02:30This baby's brain is going to shake back and forth and create horrible bruising and bleeding
02:38in that brain.
02:39And that is how a baby is going to get a TBI, not by bouncing.
02:43Despite it all, she's filled Beckett's childhood with love and laughter, not just hospitals and medicine.
