33:46No, I can't believe that it is you.
33:53A few years ago, a girl from Alcázar arrived very upset and very sad,
34:00like we were all about to arrive.
34:03And all night, she spoke like Morriña of her town,
34:07of a place called Solaz,
34:10and of her friend, the Vaquera of Barcelona.
34:13Sandra...
34:15Why did you know that she was here?
34:19And she's fine?
34:23I asked my husband to leave him alone, even if he was out for once.
34:31Why have you been so tired?
34:35Because it's not easy.
34:38But I've never stopped praying for you to come to me.
34:44Here we go.
35:01You have a way.
35:04With the pigs.
35:05My neighbors had some down the road.
35:07I grew up.
35:08It's almost time for dinner.
35:11Please join us.
35:12At our table.
35:13You and your friend.
35:14Go.
35:15Oh, we'd like that.
35:17I'm fine.
35:18Perfect.
35:33We'll go!
35:34¡Sí!
35:50¡Que empiece la fiesta!
36:04¡Que empiece la fiesta!
36:34¿Qué noticias nos traen del mundo?
37:05¡Oh!
37:05¡Oh!
37:06¡Oh!
37:07¡Oh!
37:08Pretty much sucks everywhere, except London. England sucks the most.
37:13Oh, really?
37:15And there's no people left there.
37:20How sad.
37:23I was concerned when you came into town.
37:26Strangers. I really was.
37:28But Justina has told me about you.
37:31You, senor, a tracker and a hunter.
37:34And I hear you work in running communities back in the U.S.
37:37I welcome your wisdom and insights.
37:39I got insight. Your food's fucking delicious.
37:43And your town is beautiful.
37:46But some of your traditions are a bit surprising.
37:51One thing I have learned is that the old ways are not always the best ways.
37:55Can you pass the pork? El puerco?
38:01El cerdo. Y se pide, por favor.
38:03It's delicious.
38:04Patanegra. From the southwest.
38:07Some newcomers brought the pigs up here.
38:09They have done well.
38:10Traders.
38:12Travelers.
38:13Over time, Solat became a destination for people from all over Spain, not only Galicia.
38:19The best country.
38:20Valencia.
38:21We are...
38:25How say...
38:27A melting pot.
38:29Few towns have prospered, as Solat has.
38:32And there is a reason for that.
38:35Carmen, it's a great honor
38:37who has fallen on Alba.
38:39Maybe I'd like you to say some words.
38:41My Alba.
38:54She's a good girl.
38:56Okay.
38:57Let's get it together.
38:58Let's go.
38:59Let's go.
39:00Let's go.
39:01Let's go.
39:02Relax.
39:03Let's go.
39:04Let's go.
39:05Let's go.
39:06Let's go.
39:09Everyone really loves Alba.
39:13Let's come to her.
39:14Let's go.
39:15Let's go.
39:16Y sabemos que Dios pelará por ella en su camino.
39:28You asked for our wisdom, Fede.
39:30Want a drink?
39:31We need you to drink.
39:32But I have a question.
39:36Why?
39:40Why surrender your daughters to these people?
39:43All for what?
39:44Some grains and seeds?
39:46A jug of ethanol?
39:49Forgive me.
39:50But Alcázar is Spain's hope for the future.
39:54And the ofrenda gives these girls the opportunity to thrive.
39:57And to be safe.
40:00Look at me.
40:01I'm the living proof.
40:07You see, Alcázar has been good to us.
40:12And your family?
40:15Didn't your mother's heart break when she lost you?
40:21Can you just imagine how unthinkable this is for any parent?
40:27The problem here is until we joined the alliance, Solázar was under constant siege.
40:36As Alcázar found a way to protect us.
40:39And no one regrets that.
40:41No one.
40:43I'm gonna go check on our stall, all right?
40:46Make sure everything's okay.
40:47Thank you for dinner.
40:48Thank you for dinner.
40:57Let's go.
40:58Come here.
40:59Come here.
41:07Come here.
41:11Come here.
41:12You're a guest who needs our help.
41:16Abuelita says you're a guest who needs our help.
41:19Yes, I am.
41:20This is our house.
41:22Our home.
41:23We've found a way
41:26to make this world work for us.
41:31Have you
41:33stranded, lost,
41:36far from home?
41:38Where do you belong?
41:41When you find a better way,
41:44you'll tell us.
41:46Come back to us when you find a better way.
41:54Well,
41:56time for the dance.
42:11Let's go.
42:12Let us go.
42:13Put the room off.
42:14Whatever.
42:17What is this?
42:18No, no.
42:19No, no.
42:20No, no.
42:21No.
42:22No.
42:23No, no.
42:24No.
42:26I'm not sure that you have to work here.
42:56Bravo! Bravo!
43:12My mother is... she's very passionate.
43:17She has a point. Who am I to judge?
43:20We make sacrifices.
43:27Well, in that way we are all the same, no?
43:36We couldn't have gotten this far without that.
43:40How else could we have survived?
43:50We burn all things.
43:57Como las fallas.
43:59To welcome the new.
44:05It's like a ritual of renewal.
44:08La quema.
44:09Hoping to be reborn.
44:15And find a better life than this.
44:18A better future before us.
44:26Ay, España. Españita, España.
44:29She is chaotic.
44:33Impulsive.
44:36Wild.
44:39Yet culture.
44:42And also proud.
44:45Not so long ago we conquered the world.
44:48We rule an empire.
44:50All our own.
44:58And then what happened?
45:01We could not figure out what to do with it.
45:03And...
45:04Just a moment later Spain...
45:07Implode.
45:13We turn on each other.
45:18Brother against brother.
45:23Imagine...
45:24To be capable of so much.
45:25To be capable of so much.
45:32Cervantes.
45:34Picasso.
45:39Gaudi.
45:45Yet to be our own worst enemy.
45:47Anyone.
45:53My duty is to protect my people.
45:55From every threat.
45:57Do you understand?
45:58To be capable of so much.
46:08Even the most...
46:10Persistent one of all.
46:12Ayúdame.
46:15Ourselves.
46:17Au!
46:22Do you
46:24No!
46:26No!
46:28No!
46:29Who are...
46:31No!
46:35Get home!
46:38No!
46:40No!
46:41Anyma!
46:43No!
46:44I can't just let it happen.
47:10You feel like you could fix it, but sometimes you can't.
47:14I have to do something.
47:23Is there a village nearby?
47:25They do not welcome strangers.
47:26They will if you take us.
47:34When Carol and I wash ashore and she's injured, we run into a young couple, and the young couple bring us to this town.
47:42This location we are in is northeast of Madrid in a region called Segovia, and within that region is Sepulveda.
47:52Sepulveda was one of the first places that we came to, and we fell in love with this town.
47:56It has a lot of heart, has a lot of soul, has a sort of an earthy warmth to it, and you really feel like you're in Spain.
48:02Part of the reason we chose it is because this town already exists as a community.
48:06A lot of our extras are from the community, and the great thing is we're able to use that and help make our world as believable as possible.
48:13It's such a beautiful location and just perfect for the scenes.
48:16One of the things that we really were excited about was the idea of investigating how our show could echo spaghetti westerns.
48:31I, from the very beginning, was looking at the Man With No Name movies, the Clint Eastwood movies that he did with Sergio Leone.
48:37That was one of the things that attracted us to Spain, to give it a really different feel than when we were in France.
48:43Daryl and Carol are, for all intents and purposes, people with no name.
48:47They come from a far away place.
48:49Nobody knows anything about them.
48:51They don't know anything about the town they're walking into.
48:53And that sort of is a classic makeup of a Sergio Leone movie.
49:01Welcome to Solat del Mar.
49:03Man, I don't care what's so bad about this place.
49:26They wouldn't let us be together.
49:28We really wanted to explore this season Love and the Apocalypse.
49:31The idea was to have a story that was provoked by some kind of pure love that's trying to exist in a very dark world.
49:40And that's what Roberto and Justina represent to Carol when she sees them at the top of episode two.
49:44Forbidden Love is a theme that runs through this storyline, not just Roberto and Justina,
49:50where the two families are trying to keep them apart for reasons we will discover later in the show.
49:54And there's a love story between Kath and Elena, which is also Forbidden Love.
49:58Elena has to hide her love for Kath from her husband Guillermo.
50:07Having the chance to develop this relationship between Pat and Elena was beautiful.
50:13And also working with Dan about it, he was really sensitive with the relationship of both characters.
50:19Big action scenes, big zombie scenes are great fun to shoot.
50:22But what I really love is shooting two people in a room together, too afraid to say they love each other.
50:27I just remember looking at him and getting so emotional about it.
50:34Once a year they visit the northern villages, bringing gifts, offering protection.
50:40In our story, Carol and I get sort of wrapped up in this sort of underlying drama of what unfolds here to keep this place alive.
50:48La ofrenda means the offering, and it refers to this event where the last vestiges of Spanish royalty come to the town and offer gifts in exchange for a girl.
51:01These traditions have been around for a long time, but may also be exacerbated by the situation that they're in now.
51:08The resources are low and they have to do what they have to do in order to survive.
51:12Survive.
51:13Your town is beautiful.
51:16But some of your traditions are a bit surprising.
51:19This is their system, which is sort of corrupt in our eyes.
51:23And it becomes clear that that's the thing that Roberto and Justina are running from when Daryl and Carol forced them to come back to the village.
51:30Obviously, they're a couple in love, and the threat is that Justina may be chosen.
51:34Three, two, one.
51:37Today we're filming a pig race.
51:38It's a raffle, which sort of makes decisions amongst the town.
51:42And what an interesting way to have a lottery, whichever little piglet comes in first.
51:46These are the pigs.
51:48They are all females.
51:50And I've been with them, like, two days now.
51:54Beautiful.
51:55You can be doing the pigs.
51:57Yeah, exactly.
51:58Because I know you like that.
51:59So you can be getting the pigs off.
52:01Okay, great.
52:02For weeks and weeks now, we've been training piglets to race.
52:05Pigs are not normally a trainable animal.
52:12They have bags of individuality and bags of personality, and they will do what they do.
52:17But they have been training.
52:18They've been doing very well, and I'm very proud of them.
52:20Que gane el mejor!
52:21How you doing is Michelle?
52:22How you doing?
52:24How you doing?
52:24Yes, sir.
52:26Oh, my God.
52:56Oh, my God.
