49:28Lauren really wanted to direct and she really understands the show and cares deeply.
49:33It was one of the greatest joys getting to work with her not only as an actor in the show and as a producer, but as a director.
49:39To work with every department and to break down the script together and do that for each character and for the overarching story.
49:48There is no experience like collaborating with the entire crew like that.
49:54She put so much thought into it.
49:56She spent a lot of time in the writer's room too.
49:58It's so funny.
49:59We were shooting something and she's like acting the scene and she's directing the scene.
50:02So we're doing a scene and somebody's like, oh, what's the word?
50:04And she's like, blah, blah, blah.
50:05She knows everybody's lines.
50:07I'm like, how do you know everybody's lines?
50:16My favorite scene to direct in episode six was with Joko and Jeffrey in the top floor of the cathedral reflecting on their past and sharing a cigarette.
50:26I will go home to Croatia.
50:30There was something about that that was so stirring to me as a normal thing that two guys might sit on a stoop and do.
50:36But within this insane context.
50:39I love working with Joko.
50:40Any scene with him is a pleasure to do.
50:43What he brings to this role as an actor is stunning.
50:47I was so lucky to have someone like Joko.
50:55The sequence that follows them having the conversation upstairs in the cathedral is really one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the whole episode.
51:02All of these things that were ideas are suddenly brought into a physical altercation.
51:09We have the stunt actors, but I would say the majority of that scene is those guys doing it.
51:14And Lauren was right there in the thick of it, pushing them on and helping them and keeping them motivated.
51:19Let's pause for a second and switch the bats.
51:21The guys brought so much to it and they were broken and exhausted and drenched in sweat.
51:26I'm too old for that is what I've decided.
51:28Suddenly, I can't bounce off the ground like I could when I was 20 anymore at 58.
51:33And so what I realized that day was, ouch, it hurts.

51:46Also, Negan has gotten in fights with everybody in The Walking Dead world at some point.
51:51And then he gets his ass kicked by Jelko, who's like this big.
52:02So that was kind of awesome.
52:04There was some sort of poetry in that.
52:06And I think he took special pleasure in getting to be the dude that got the dude to beat him.
52:11To see two men that were brothers and find each other again and to rail on each other in such violence,
52:17It was just a crushing moment.

52:26With that comes, I think, a lot of remorse and a lot of responsibility.
52:30You know, if on some level the Croat's almost like one of his kids and he wasn't there and he broke him
52:35and it's his responsibility and so when he sends him away, it's almost like protecting him from Negan.
52:47The most challenging part of Directive 206 was definitely the bear sequence for a number of reasons.
52:55You have to think of the final edit and where you're going to want to see it
52:59and where it will be of most benefit and where it will be the creepiest.
53:06And you have to imagine all of that before you even start shooting anything.
53:09So we storyboarded to within an inch of our lives to see it and to build it
53:13and when you can hold back and not see the bear and when it will really make an impact to see it.
53:17And so with me at this height, the eye line is proper.
53:20It's a bear.

53:23And it was really interesting because she got to like go in her director mode and she'd be like,
53:26okay, you go here, you go here, let's try this, let's try this.
53:29And then immediately, boom, she'd switch and go like actor mode.
53:32Within performing, especially something like that where you are really fighting for your life,
53:36you have to drum up so much adrenaline and cortisol.
53:39So it was a funny down regulation and up regulation in between each take
53:43because I wanted to stay in the zone as much as I could.
53:46It was such an amazing experience.
53:50You weren't the first ones that I found in the park.
53:57I can't even start with how I can sing the praises of Dasha.
54:01She was one of the best walkers we have ever had.
54:04When I became a walker, I had to go in there and get fitted for my contacts.
54:07I'm like, yeah, yeah, I wore contacts.
54:09The contacts covers my whole eye.
54:11But then they put this little piece on me and they ate my leg up.
54:15She just captured something that was incredibly moving.
54:18And then that's when I got to work with Kim.
54:23Working with everyone was so great.
54:25We just formed a little family, you know, everybody is very kind.
54:28I've been really excited to get the opportunity to be more of a villain.
