00:00Hey, do we have mixed messaging?
00:04What do you mean?
00:05Coming from the 49ers front office.
00:07Oh, please explain.
00:09Sean Salisbury, 15 minutes, okay?
00:11Yeah, yeah.
00:12Confirmed.
00:14Yeah.
00:14Cuckoo.
00:15Nice.
00:15Please explain.
00:16I love Sean.
00:18John Lynch publicly stated this morning,
00:22yeah, we're having some productive calls.
00:24We're on that phone now.
00:26We're out there talking about pass rushers.
00:30There's no one player who's going to replace Nick Bosa, duh.
00:33Yep.
00:33But, like, yeah, we're moving.
00:36We're having a lot of really productive calls.
00:39I live in a world where,
00:43especially when I'm listening to major people in sports talk,
00:48they do a great job of trying to under-promise
00:52so they can over-deliver.
00:54That's why, for instance, on a Thursday,
00:57lovely Christy will do this every week.
00:59She'll say, hey, this player's got a cue next to his name.
01:02Is he going to play?
01:04And often on a Thursday, I'm going to be like, I don't know,
01:07because they're not going to tell me yet.
01:08No.
01:08Because they're going to under-promise so they can over-deliver.
01:11Is Xavier Worthy going to play Sunday night?
01:13I don't know yet.
01:14The Chiefs are not going to over-promise and under-deliver.
01:19So when John Lynch says publicly, oh, we're moving the ball down the field,
01:23we're having some productive conversations,
01:24I feel like he's telling the fans, oh, yeah, we're 4-1.
01:28We're going to go get some people, and we're going to bolster this, right?
01:34Well, then there's Kyle Shanahan,
01:35who got into a conversation with Tim Calakami at his presser yesterday
01:40and was asked if this moment for a pass rusher feels similar to 2019
01:47for a receiver when the 49ers went out
01:51and I think dropped maybe a fifth-rounder on Emmanuel Sanders
01:55to bring him in, and it helped,
01:58and then the Niners went to the Super Bowl and almost won the darn thing.
02:01So this is before practice yesterday.
02:04Listen to this.
02:04The Emmanuel Sanders trade was like, really, you said it,
02:07maybe one piece away.
02:08Do you feel at all similar?
02:09I know it's a little ways away to that time.
02:12No, I don't feel at all like that.
02:14I think at that time we had a Super Bowl defense
02:18that was as good as anyone in the league
02:20and probably had been for like 10 years, and it was pretty obvious.
02:23And I thought at the time some of the receivers we were dependent on
02:25weren't there, and we were playing some young rookies,
02:28and we thought we needed to add another guy.
02:31But, yeah, I don't totally see it the same situation as right now.
02:33Okay, translate this for me.
02:35Did Kyle just say no?
02:36Because back then I thought we could win the Super Bowl.
02:39This is, and by the way, I'd agree with him, but this is not that.
02:44Like, we do not feel, oh, yeah, we're one player away from being the big bad wolf on the block.
02:51Right, because what they have going on right now goes far beyond just missing an edge rusher.
02:57And just looking at the internet, they traded a third and a fourth for Emmanuel Sanders,
03:03and they got back a fifth.
03:05Okay, that's what I'm remembering.
03:06So, yeah, they got a fifth for the upcoming draft.
03:09They gave up a third and a fourth, and they got Emmanuel Sanders, and yeah.
03:12And you look at that year and stuff, and they had an elite defense, and he talked about it.
03:17You had the best defense in football, and you felt like you were one piece away.
03:20And it reminds me more of the Christian McCaffrey situation where you also had a really good team,
03:25and you just could not run the ball.
03:27So you got that one piece.
03:28And so you look at this year and put four and one aside for just a moment.
03:32Your quarterback has not been able to play.
03:34We don't know when he'll be able to play.
03:36Your tight end is due to come back but can't come back.
03:40Your number one wide receiver who's getting $30 million a year hasn't played and maybe won't play.
03:44And we can go all the way through.
03:47So this team does not have an elite defense.
03:50It's a good defense.
03:51You don't have a great offensive line.
03:55You don't have a good pass rush, and you've got about seven or eight rookies or second-year guys who start for you.
04:01So I get what he's saying.
04:03What he's saying basically without saying it is we're four and one.
04:07Are you sure?
04:07Are you sure and stuff?
04:10Because I looked at the film, and honestly, and I always do this, Mark,
04:14when if you watch a game in the old school, before they had the score bug
04:20and before they had the score box and all the rest of the things,
04:23if you just watched these games and you didn't keep track of who was scoring and who wasn't scoring,
04:30and you look at all five of these games like a boxing match,
04:32they're probably down three if not four of the five rounds.
04:36Yeah.
04:37I mean, do you want to know?
04:38Like, Kyle would never say this, and I don't even think he thinks this.
04:40I think he just said that.
04:41No, no, no.
04:42Well, but what I'm about to say, like, you know what the problem with the 49ers right now is?
04:47I mean, in theory, they're going to acquire a bunch of people at the trade deadline
04:50who are already on the team.
04:52You know what I mean?
04:53They're going to acquire George Kittle, and they're going to acquire Ricky Pearsall,
04:56and they might acquire Jawan Jennings this week,
04:58and maybe they'll acquire Brandon Iyuk at some point.
05:01Maybe they'll acquire Brock Purdy here pretty soon.
05:04They're still going to need a pass rusher.
05:06But, you know, for years when the Giants were just so flippin' boring,
05:11and this is true now, this is a fact, the marketing department over at the Giants,
05:16if you said, who is the team's face, who's the face of the Giants,
05:23who's their most popular asset, the answer was their broadcasters.
05:29Right.
05:30No joke.
05:31And a babe.
05:31Like, right.
05:33Like, bobblehead night was crook and kipe.
05:36It wasn't the shortstop or anybody out on the field.
05:39Two.
05:39A double play.
05:40That's great.
05:42That's a great broadcast team, but that's not good.
05:45It's not ideal if your broadcasters are your most popular assets.
05:50Do you want to know what the best thing the 49ers have right now?
05:54It's their coaches.
05:57It's Kyle and Robert Sala.
05:59Like, that's, right, to me, when I look at the way this team has performed so far this year,
06:06those are their MVPs.
06:08That takes nothing away from people who have performed well,
06:12and there are a number of them, although I can barely, outside of McCaffrey,
06:17is there anybody who's played five games?
06:19And I'm talking about, like, the major names.
06:21The skill guys?
06:22Yeah.
06:22Not Colton McKibbitz.
06:24I mean, I think Tonjes has.
06:27But even in the opener, like, he probably didn't play more than a few plays.
06:31Fred Warner, I guess.
06:32Fred Warner.
06:32Juice has played all five.
06:33Yeah.
06:33Fred Warner would be like, okay, he's played all five games, and he's been phenomenal.
06:39But outside of that, like, Purdy hasn't played five.
06:44Mack hasn't played five.
06:45If no receivers played five, nobody's standing out.
06:50Somehow they're four and one.
06:52But, yeah, their best asset right now is their coaches.
06:55Not ideal.
06:56No, and it's their system, and yet they have, you know, done enough to where they're four and one.
07:01And I'm going back to what Kyle was just talking about in that cut about, you know,
07:06what things were like back in 2019.
07:08And you beat Washington on the road, 9-0, in that monsoon, Nick Boso doing, you know,
07:16water angels on the field, and they all were doing the slip and slide.
07:19They got to 6-0.
07:21But you beat a bad team, 9-0.
07:24And before that, you beat the Rams, 20-7.
07:27You beat the Browns, 31-3.
07:29That defense did not allow people to score.
07:32It's just they didn't let you score.
07:34And he looked at his offense and stuff, and he's like, okay, we're 6-0.
07:38But, my God, I got Garoppolo, who's got no one to throw to.
07:41I've got a mediocre run game.
07:43What do we need to do to get this team to be better?
07:46And so he made that move.
07:47They were 6-0, and he made that move.
07:50Well, that's why I ask about mixed messages, though.
07:53Because I think we all agree that the 49ers could use a pass rusher or 8.
07:58And John Lynch is out there going, yep, we're on the phone, man.
08:02We're driving this thing.
08:03We're 4-1, and we're going to find somebody.
08:05But then Kyle kind of drops like a – now, he doesn't say anywhere in there we're not going to go get someone.
08:12But the 49ers are clearly in a spot where they have to be judicious about who they acquire
08:18and what it means for their salary structure going forward, largely because of major contracts
08:23that will kick in next year, starting with Brock Purdy.
08:27But new extensions for Fred Warner and George Kittle and et cetera, et cetera.
08:31So they've got to be careful about who they acquire and how does it fit both on the field
08:36and in the salary structure.
08:39And you hesitate to do that unless you feel like, dude, we're one player away from winning this thing.
08:46And I think Kyle right there was saying that they're not.
08:49Right.
08:49And he's right, by the way.
08:50Yeah.
08:51I think you need a guard.
08:52You need a pass rusher.
08:53You need probably another corner and stuff.
08:58And you need more than just one guy.
09:01And I'm looking at that game against Washington when they won 9-0.
09:05And you had Dante Pettis play 92% of the snaps.
09:10Kendrick Bourne played 89% of those snaps at wide receiver.
09:14Richie James played half the snaps.
09:16And so you're Kyle, and you win 9-0, whatever, weather aside, you scored nine points.
09:22And you look at Dante, Kendrick, and Richie James, you're thinking, my God, we're 6-0.
09:28But I'm going to need to get somebody who I can actually trust out there.
09:31Yeah.
09:32So, I mean, I'm sure that they, especially if they win another game or two before the deadline,
09:37there will be an acquisition, I believe.
09:41But at the same time, will it be fancy?
09:44Will it be big money?
09:45Will it be someone that they commit to beyond this year?
09:48However, I think the 49ers might be looking to not do that unless this thing gets to, you know, 7-1.
09:56But even there, I think you're right about, like, it has to be the right, not only player, but the right contract.
10:01No doubt.
10:02Because you don't want to, like, be sunk into a guy who is going to cost you a bunch.
