00:01Welcome to an unforgettable chapter of baseball history. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch entered the
00:07interview room at T-Mobile Park on Friday night, visibly emotional with tears still in his eyes.
00:12His voice trembled as he attempted to reflect on the conclusion of his team's season. For nearly
00:17five hours, and spanning 15 innings, the Detroit Tigers fought against the Seattle Mariners in
00:23Game 5 of the American League Division Series, vying for a spot in the ALCS and the chance to
00:29prolong their season. The matchup became one of the most unforgettable winner-take-all playoff games
00:35in Major League Baseball history, certainly the longest in duration. Hinch remarked, that was an
00:41epic game. The contest came to a close when Jorge Polanco hit a line drive in the 15th inning that
00:46landed in right field, driving in J.P. Crawford for the winning run. This moment marked not only the
00:51end of the game which concluded with a score of 3-2, but also the end of the Tigers' season. In such
00:57games, the conclusion can feel sudden and challenging to comprehend. We have nothing to
01:02hang our heads down on, Hinch stated, as the sounds of the Mariners' celebration filtered through the
01:07walls, into the interview room. There's going to be plenty of time to talk about it. At this point
01:15in the season, the highs and lows of the game are evident. However, I feel a deep sense of pride for the
01:21team and what we achieved together, especially as we fought hard tonight in an effort to prolong our
01:27season. Many players were still coming to terms with the outcome as they sat in the clubhouse.
01:32Catcher Dylan Dingler, who had caught 263 pitches from eight different Tigers pitchers and managed to
01:38hit a double in the 14th inning, moved with noticeable fatigue. It's strange, it still hasn't
01:43fully sunk in, Dingler remarked. Of course, there's only one team that gets to keep playing.
01:48Tarek Skubal made history by setting a record for a winner-take-all postseason game, achieving 13
01:56strikeouts over six innings while allowing just one run. He also set a postseason record with seven
02:03consecutive strikeouts. After leaving the game, he leaned against the dugout as the Tigers' bullpen
02:09took over, effectively pitching the remainder of the game.
02:12It's tough. I think it's supposed to sting. It's meant to hurt, Skubal expressed. It will
02:19hurt for a while, but then you need to channel that pain into motivation to ensure it never happens
02:25again. Kerry Carpenter, who hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning and had a four-hit game,
02:31expressed his gratitude to God for allowing him to be part of this moment.
02:35This game was incredible, Carpenter remarked. It's one of the best games I've ever participated in.
02:40Losing this one was really tough. While the Mariners celebrated their victory,
02:44several Tigers players remained in the dugout, some frozen in place at the railing,
02:49shocked that the game had come to an end.
02:51It was just amazing to witness such a fantastic game unfold, said reliever Kyle Finnegan.
02:56We were in it, fighting until the end. Both teams had numerous chances. I saw some excellent pitchers
03:02step up and keep the game alive. I was just watching and appreciating my teammates as they worked hard to
03:07stay competitive. For fans of a certain age, the intense game and its heartbreaking conclusion
03:12evoke memories of the Tigers' loss in the 2009 AL Central tiebreaker against Minnesota.
03:18That match, which lasted 13 innings, left players in tears when it concluded.
03:23This defeat became a source of motivation for several players, especially Miguel Cabrera,
03:28who later contributed to Detroit's AL Central title run two years later.
03:32This run included four consecutive division championships, culminating in the Tigers'
03:37most recent appearance in the ALCS in 2013. This current team came agonizingly close to
03:44breaking that postseason drought. They reached the same stage as last season but experienced
03:49even greater disappointment. Although the Tigers' pitching staff managed to prolong the game,
03:53their batting lineup struggled to generate the crucial run needed for victory.
03:57Carpenter made history by becoming the third player in MLB postseason history to safely reach
04:02base six times in a single game. However, the Tigers left two runners stranded in the 8th,
04:0811th, and 12th innings, with the final opportunity coming when Zach McKinstry was thrown out at home
04:14plate with no outs. Ultimately, the Tigers went one for nine with runners in scoring position.
04:19The team struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities, leaving 10 players stranded on base,
04:25which highlighted a persistent issue that plagued them from September through the postseason.
04:30Javier Baez remarked,
04:32It felt like the entire game hinged on who would make a mistake first, as that team would ultimately
04:37lose. He referenced his bold slide into second base for a leadoff double in the sixth inning,
04:43which prompted the Mariners to pull their starter, George Kirby, and set the stage for Carpenter's
04:48home run against left-handed pitcher, Gabe Spire.
04:52Baez acknowledged,
04:54It was a well-fought game from both teams. Unfortunately, we didn't perform as we had
04:59hoped with our batting. This outcome marks a devastating conclusion to a Tigers season that
05:04had started strong, boasting the best record in the majors at the All-Star break. However,
05:09a collapse in September cost them the AL Central title, although they managed to revive their hopes
05:14with a wild-card series victory in Cleveland.
05:17What's your take on the most heartbreaking game of the season?
