Gaza peace deal explained: What we know about Israel-Hamas agreement
Transcript
00:00I was just given a note by the Secretary of State saying that we're very close to a deal in the
00:05Middle East. Donald Trump says Israel and Hamas have signed off on the first phase of his Gaza
00:10peace plan. But what does the peace deal actually entail? It appears there are four main elements
00:15in this first step towards a deal. Firstly, a full ceasefire. Secondly, an exchange of hostages.
00:22All 48 Israeli hostages, alive and deceased, should be returned within 72 hours of Israel
00:30publicly accepting this agreement. In exchange, more than 2,000 Palestinian prisoners could
00:36be released, including 250 on life sentences. Number three is a withdrawal by the IDF to agreed
00:43lines. Then fourthly, the resumption of humanitarian aid going into Gaza. This has all been agreed
00:50under a wider 20-point peace plan that Trump unveiled last week. But many things remain
00:55unclear or have not been agreed upon yet. Under the terms of Trump's peace plan, Israel will
01:01not occupy or annex Gaza, and Hamas fighters will have to put down their weapons and be
01:07granted amnesty to safely leave the Gaza Strip. However, Hamas have previously said they would
01:13only do so when a Palestinian state has been established.
01:18There have been two ceasefires already, both of which failed. But this time, President
01:23Trump seems intent on drawing a line through hostilities once and for all. Whether he was
01:29motivated more by Israel's attack on US ally Qatar in September, or by a potential Nobel Peace
01:36Prize remains unknown. But if the peace plan succeeds, it could bring an end to one of the bloodiest
01:43conflicts of our time.
