Being a veterinarian means sometimes you have to work where the sun doesn't shine. Warning: this is not for the faint of heart.

This clip is from Episode 1: Caring for Elephants

About The Elephant Hospital:
Take a trip to the world’s largest hospital devoted solely to treating elephants: the Elephant Hospital in Lampang, Northern Thailand, which cares for over 100 sick, injured or neglected animals each year. With unique access to the daily challenges faced by the vets and volunteers on site, this is a heart-warming series full of uplifting, extraordinary and unexpected stories—whether that’s treating an elephant with cancer or fitting a prosthetic leg to one that has lost a limb after standing on a land mine.

00:00Hi, I'm Paul. Nice to meet you.
00:05Nice to meet you. I'm Dr Uwe.
00:07Dr Uwe, nice to meet you. I would shake your hand, but it looks like you're about to put it up an elephant's bottom, so I'll leave you.
00:13A symptom of the herpes virus is a high temperature, so it's the first thing Dr Uwe wants to check.
00:20Unfortunately for many, it's not as simple as placing the thermometer under her tongue.
00:30To get an accurate reading, Dr Uwe must hold the thermometer in place for at least one minute.
00:37It's actually quite dangerous. The vet's got her hand inside the bottom of her, but just backing up onto the pole, you could easily break her arm if it gets crushed against the pole.
00:49In an elephant, anything above 97 degrees Fahrenheit will show a high temperature.
00:57Temperature is one-handed Fahrenheit.
01:04100 degrees Fahrenheit? Yes.
01:06So that's very high? Yes, very high.
01:08So is that a sign of the herpes virus? Yes.
01:11Wow, that's very worrying.
01:13One of the hospital's other vets, Dr Gunn, arrives with an anti-fever jab in an attempt to bring Minnie's temperature down.
01:27OK.
01:28OK.
01:33Yeah?
01:34Got it.
01:37In terms of a chance of survival, where would you put it at this stage in a percentage?
01:41Very low. Maybe 20%.
01:44So she's only got a 20% chance of...
01:46Maybe, maybe.
01:47Wow.
01:48This is a real danger situation for her?
01:49Yes.
01:50She could still die?
01:51Yes.
01:52Minni is in the best place for her condition.
01:59The team of vets here will be working 24-7 fighting for her survival.
02:04And she will be kept close to her mum for some much-needed TLC.
02:11But even with all this help, the odds are against her.
02:15That's good.
02:17Yeah.
02:18We can't take a chance of being passenger on her.
02:19No.
02:20No.
