Hundreds of demonstrators marched through central Milan on Wednesday, waving Palestinian flags and protesting Israel’s raid on the Gaza Sumud Flotilla - a convoy carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza that was intercepted, with all vessels seized and about 450 activists detained.
Footage shows flotilla supporters waving Palestinian flags, lighting flares, and marching through traffic before police cordoned off the area and patrolled the rally.
“We are here especially for Gaza, where genocide continues despite the chatter about a peace that is not coming,” said former detained activist Paolo Romano, a regional councillor from Lombardy.
“We call for the release of the activists who were illegally detained [...] in international waters, and who should not be subjected to the inhumane treatment that we were subjected to,” Romano continued.
Romano described the mistreatment faced by flotilla participants while in custody, saying, “We are collecting everything that has happened to us: from beatings to water deprivation, sleep deprivation, insults, humiliation, to dogs being set off to scare us. We will report everything.”
"The harassment we suffered is one millionth of what Palestinians suffer every day. Palestinians would pray to have a roof over their heads like we had in prison, even if there were twenty of us in a room for eight […] We must always remember that the flotilla and our mobilisation are a beacon to illuminate Gaza," Romano added.
Israeli forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla as it neared Gaza last week. The fleet aimed to break Israel's siege and deliver humanitarian aid to the enclave. Meanwhile, Tel Aviv accused the flotilla of violating a 'lawful blockade' and called the mission a publicity stunt.
All activists have now been released from Israeli detention.
