Dalian’s powerlifting star Xu Mingjie has drawn international attention after a video of him training in ancient Chinese armour went viral.

Footage shows Xu, weighing 170 kg, lifting heavy weights and striking powerful poses in full armour.

“In the beginning, I posted videos of my physique online, and many people said I'd look really cool in armour. I had a custom-made suit of armour made, and it definitely looks great on me. After that, netizens said I was a modern-day Xu Chu,” Xu explained, referring to the Chinese military general who lived during the late Eastern Han dynasty.

Mingjie started training at 17 to lose weight, weighing 125 kg. He quickly discovered his talent for strength sports and bulked up to 170 kg.

"After I started training at the gym, my weight increased, and I felt my strength and athletic performance were much better than before. I think muscle mass is what determines a person's health," Xu said.

“I think fitness is a very fair thing; if you put in the effort, you will see results. But don't take fitness too seriously. It's just a part of our lives, improving our focus, workload, or athletic performance, all of these are fine, but there's no need to make it seem so important. It's just part of our lives," he added.

In December 2023, Xu set an Asian junior record at the IPF Asian Championships with a total lift of 855 kg in the 120 kg+ category. He now plans to compete at the IPF World Championships in 2026.

00:30其实我当时就是因为减肥而接触健身的,之前一直跑步一直跑步,完了进就是上到初中的时候接触到健身房,我开始慢慢做力量训练,就这样。
00:46去年开始吧,我把自己的身材视频发到一些网上,很多朋友说我穿盔甲应该很帅,之后我定做一套盔甲穿确实很帅,完之后网友才说我上那个现代的虚褚。
01:16我觉得体重跟健康应该没有任何关系,因为我之前的时候是250斤,但是那时候没有就是没有接触过任何训练,那时候就很胖,就是走两步就很喘,完了一点运动能力都没有,一点力量都没有,我慢慢接触到训练之后,进健身房接触训练,但我的体重反而大了,但我觉得我的力量表现和运动的表现比之前好的很多,我觉得肌肉才是决定一个人健不健康。
