00:00That smells. Give that a whiff.
00:03No.
00:05Four sets of holiday hosts.
00:07Yeah, nice and clean.
00:08Check into each other's places.
00:10Oh, wow.
00:11It's a nice room, isn't it?
00:12What a property.
00:13And check out one another.
00:15Every day I'll check in minimum five rooms.
00:17You love a check-in.
00:18Yeah.
00:19It's because you like to flirt with all the sweet old ladies that come in.
00:22Connor and Grace are great hosts,
00:24and I think we can get on really well with them.
00:27Today, there's cowning around.
00:30This is a lovely experience.
00:32Is there any jobs going?
00:33There's always jobs to do here.
00:35As they battle.
00:36When you pay for accommodation, you expect a clean room.
00:40To be named best value for money.
00:42Cobwebs in the kitchen.
00:44I can't see them. I honestly can't.
00:47The third visit of the week is to Llan Cluny in Carmarthenshire,
00:57and Cymya Holiday Cottages, owned by Eilis Owen,
01:01who's joined in the competition by friend Demelza Fish Jenkins,
01:05a pair who like to kid around.
01:07We met through our children.
01:08Our girls do the same things.
01:10They play the harp together, so we end up on most Saturdays having a coffee.
01:14We've been friends for years. Partners in crime.
01:18Guests looking for a steal can choose from one of six self-catered cottages
01:23alongside a working farm for up to £185.50 a night,
01:28based on a two-night minimum, in a place that treasures tradition.
01:32There's something unique about these old buildings.
01:35There's something cosy and warm about it, I feel.
01:38I've painted everything, but I've kept the traditional as well.
01:42You've got to be careful, otherwise it'll be modernised,
01:44and I don't think people want that.
01:47And with her competitors on the way, Eilis is hoping for a clean sheet.
01:52It is hours of work to get the cottages clean,
01:55but after saying that, I am a clean person and things have got to be right.
01:59About to arrive are today's first guests.
02:03Why have you got a razor with you?
02:05So I could shave my neck.
02:06Is that a ladies' razor?
02:07It is. They shave better than men's.
02:09Oh, yeah, I respect that.
02:12Looking sharp are friends Connor Keddie and Grace Knowles
02:16of the White Lion Western in Western Cheshire.
02:19Earlier this week, on a trip to a nuclear bunker museum,
02:23the guests were alerted to Eilis and Demelza's nationality.
02:27It's from here that the warning of an impending nuclear attack
02:30would have been sent out all over England.
02:33You're only warning England, you're not warning Wales.
02:36I think with Demelza and Eilis' place,
02:39I trip to Wales maybe on the cards.
02:41And today, Connor and Grace are contemplating the country.
02:44This is a very rural surrounding.
02:48I'm a city boy. You are a city boy.
02:50This will be like a first time experience.
02:54Oh, we've had a message.
02:56Oh, interesting.
02:57Dear Connor and Grace,
02:58welcome to Kunwa Holiday Cottages.
03:02Price £185.50 a night, based on a two-night minimum.
03:06OK. Self-catering.
03:08OK.
03:09That's your turn to cook.
03:11Oh, hi, dragon.
03:12Are we in Wales? I think so.
03:14Oh, mackerel.
03:20Cosy.
03:24This is nice.
03:25I like the sort of oldness of it as well.
03:28It's definitely a cottage.
03:29Yeah, definitely a cottage.
03:30Definitely a cottage.
03:31With Grace and Connor building things up,
03:34the next guests are learning the lingo.
03:36Can you speak Welsh, Roger?
03:38No, I did try this morning.
03:40Bo-da, was it?
03:41Bo-da is, um...
03:42Good morning, perhaps.
03:43Good morning, perhaps.
03:44Fitting right in, our married couple, Sue and Roger Benbow,
03:49of Tedstone log cabins in Tedstone-Delamere, Herefordshire.
03:53On the last visit, over drinks, airless served up a clue.
03:57We have self-checking service because, on my location,
04:01we do get people arrive at 12, 1 o'clock in the morning.
04:05I think Alice's place is on a farm, most definitely,
04:08but it's obviously completely different to where we've been so far.
04:12And today, Sue and Roger are reaping the rewards.
04:15I'm looking forward to getting out into some countryside.
04:18I reckon it's going to be on a farm,
04:20perhaps a little bit old-fashioned, I don't know.
04:23Mm, it could be.
04:25Oh, taxi as we've come through.
04:27Dear Roger and Sue, welcome to Kermia Holiday Cottage.
04:33Price, £178.50 per night.
04:39Ah, there we go.
04:44Definitely lots of character.
04:46Look at that wood burner over there, that's really nice.
04:49With Sue and Roger warming to the place,
04:52today's next guests are disaster planning.
04:54Worst-case scenario today is belting in the rain.
04:58It's not something that's at the top of my list.
05:00I don't mind camping.
05:02Yeah, but you do scouts.
05:03Yeah.
05:04I'm just glad I've come with a scout leader.
05:06I can build us on fire.
05:08Leaders of the pack are friends Laura Mewes and Claudia Pardo,
05:14of Foxlow Grange in Buxton, Derbyshire.
05:16When they hosted last time...
05:18It's different, isn't it?
05:19Very, very different.
05:21Despite first-rate first impressions...
05:24Oh, wow.
05:25Oh, wow.
05:26Come morning, Eilis and Demelza had views on the view.
05:30You can see inside. It's a massive issue for me.
05:32Yeah, it is. There's no privacy there.
05:34There's nothing.
05:35No.
05:36And at feedback...
05:37How was the facilities?
05:38They broke the news.
05:40I would say six because of the privacy.
05:43Six.
05:44Yeah, that's disappointing.
05:46Obviously, people are being super critical.
05:49But today, Laura and Claudia are in the mood for moving on.
05:53Some of the comments that were said, we felt were a bit unjust.
05:57But, yeah, we just continue being as we are.
05:59I think we're quite straight-talking people anyway,
06:01but not in a nasty way.
06:03Laura and Claudia, welcome to our holiday cottage.
06:07£139.50 per night. That's cheap.
06:10It's a cottage.
06:11Yeah.
06:12Oh, look, Claudia. This looks medieval.
06:19I don't know if I expected this.
06:21A lot of cobwebs.
06:23Dust.
06:25With the hosts out of the way,
06:28the guests can cast their eye over Cumya.
06:31Lovely and keen, Rog.
06:33It's got beams. I love beams.
06:37I think it's good guys' book, Laura.
06:39The checking information you get is great,
06:41but I would like a digital guide pre-arrival.
06:44It's slightly rusty.
06:46It seems to be leaking rust as well,
06:48which is affecting the carpet.
06:50There's quite a lot of cobwebs, like Halloween on steroids.
06:54I like the rustic beams.
06:55I like that they're not painted over like ours.
06:57However, quite a lot of cobwebs.
06:59Can you see up there?
07:00It looks like a well-established cobweb.
07:02Yeah, there's loads up there.
07:04Oh, this looks nice.
07:06Very rustic.
07:08I found some dust.
07:10Oh, just a bit.
07:12Did you find any dust?
07:14Yes, there's some dust there.
07:16That should have been white, really, shouldn't it?
07:18There's a lot of cobwebs around my head,
07:19and I'm not quite sure how I feel about that.
07:21The lights are annoying me a little bit
07:23because of the warm yellow and then the harsh white.
07:26It's just a bit jarring.
07:27Yeah.
07:28What have you got in here?
07:30Ooh.
07:31Not my favourite thing to have a bathroom downstairs.
07:34No.
07:35Takes me back to when I was a child.
07:37It just needs a little bit of a brush.
07:39I just feel like it just needs a really deep clean with bleach.
07:42What do you think of that string?
07:44It just needs a new string on there, doesn't it?
07:45Yeah.
07:46Bit dirty-looking.
07:47And it's also a little bit of...
07:49Damp on the outside wall.
07:50Damp on the... possibly on the outside wall.
07:52Black mould there and some in the corner there and some over there.
07:55It's on the silicone.
07:57It could have done with some new taps.
07:59That's missing.
08:00I don't know whether that's the hot or the cold.
08:02And it's got a bit of gunge under there.
08:04It's a bit rusty.
08:06Oh, mate.
08:08Room inspection's almost over.
08:11Sue and Roger are quick on the draw.
08:13Three, two, one, go!
08:19Connor's hanging out.
08:20Walking wardrobe.
08:21Beautiful.
08:23While Laura and Claudia request a re-clean.
08:27If you just look down the side of these lights,
08:29and this side's even worse,
08:31and this one's got a little friend attached.
08:33Do you want me to draw light before this evening?
08:34Yeah, don't mind.
08:38Myth has it that Carmarthonshire was home to the Arthurian wizard Merlin.
08:45And today, hoping to give their guests a magical time,
08:48hosts Airless and Demelza are treating them to a look around the farm.
08:52Well, being a farmer myself, it is a best man's holiday,
08:56but it's always nice to see other people farm and how they do it.
09:00But with it raining cats and dogs,
09:02it's all inside to meet some of the farm's youngest animals.
09:06Welcome to our calving shed.
09:08We've got some hungry calves, you know.
09:10Where Laura and Claudia really milk the experience.
09:13What breed of cow are these?
09:15Limousine crossfreesions, they are.
09:17And how old are they?
09:1821 days.
09:19Oh, really?
09:20This is a lovely experience.
09:22Is there any jobs going?
09:23There's always jobs to do here.
09:25Oh.
09:26And as the rest of the group have a turn...
09:28Yours is finished, mate. All gone.
09:30..it seems the hosts aren't cowering away from the morning's re-clean.
09:34I was a bit disappointed with her feedback for the cottage.
09:39They show with a bed.
09:40It was nothing, I thought.
09:42I think it was a bit of a tit-for-tat.
09:44We're not here to give any, like, tit-for-tat.
09:46Obviously, we've got our comments and, you know,
09:48it's all about constructive criticism
09:50and I hope people take it in the way that it's intended.
09:53With the downpour showing no sign of dissipating,
09:56Alice has a surprise in store, courtesy of her children.
10:00Alice's two daughters have decided to give you
10:02a little bit of a quiz.
10:04Yes.
10:05And the winner has, well, a box of chocolates.
10:08To win the competition,
10:09the guests must identify the four different breeds of sheep
10:12in front of them from a list provided.
10:15And with quiz sheets handed out,
10:17the competition intensifies.
10:19But we're going to be bad at it.
10:23I'm a bit of a sheep farmer.
10:25If I get it wrong, he's going to make me look really bad.
10:27Roger definitely kept that in his secret pocket, didn't he?
10:30I know my sheep.
10:31I really don't know what to expect from them now.
10:33I've got no idea.
10:34I don't see Sue as a farm lady.
10:36Roger's revelation revealed.
10:38The group get guessing.
10:40What's this?
10:41It's a black one.
10:43Black no-kill cheviots.
10:44Is that the one you saw?
10:45No.
10:46What's that?
10:47That one.
10:48Why that one?
10:49Oh no, that's that one.
10:50Shall we go for that then?
10:51Roger!
10:52Have you got them all yet?
10:53Just about.
10:54We're going.
10:55Decisions made.
10:56The group gather for the results.
10:59Pen number one.
11:00Roger said,
11:02Breck knock her cheviots.
11:04OK.
11:05Herdwick.
11:06Herdwicks.
11:07We said same as Roger.
11:08Yes, it's Breck knock cheviots.
11:11Yes!
11:12With both Sue and Roger and Laura and Claudia correctly guessing the next two breeds, it all comes down to question four.
11:20Kerry Hill.
11:21Hey.
11:22Speckled face.
11:23Yes.
11:24Speckled face.
11:25They are Beulah.
11:27Speckled face.
11:28Yes!
11:29Absolutely buzzing that we beat Roger.
11:35Do you not feel sorry for it?
11:37No.
11:38Oh, I felt sorry for it.
11:39No, I don't.
11:41When this goes out, I will have a few texts, I think, come through.
11:46And with the afternoon nearing its end, the weather hasn't dampened the hosts' spirits.
11:51I hope they enjoyed something different anyway for them.
11:53On a rainy afternoon, it was really nice to show off what we had with.
11:57I felt quite proud then.
11:59The third visit of the week is to Llan Chluny in Carmarthenshire, where tonight hosts Eilis and Demelza have invited their guests for a drink in the local.
12:16Cheers.
12:17Cheers.
12:18Cheers.
12:19Cheers.
12:20As it's raised, Sue wants the history from the host.
12:23So, Eilis, how did you come about buying your holiday let?
12:26Well, Cumiar had been for sale for a year and a half, and we were looking as farmers, obviously, to buy the land.
12:32We looked at farming on its own, and we knew we couldn't sustain it, so we looked for diversification, like most farmers do these days.
12:39So, have you done any work yourself on the cottages?
12:41Yes.
12:42When we arrived there, there was, well, it was really run down, unfortunately, and we had to refurbish everything.
12:47It's actually one whole season she's been running it, so to be honest, she's in the early stages of learning.
12:54I think Ernest has taken on a lot. I suspect she was pretty busy before she even took on the holiday cottages.
13:00I think she is doing a good job. Some of it just needs upgrading. She needs to spend more money on the properties.
13:07Business balanced. Grace wants the group to dish the dirt.
13:11What's everyone's opinions on the level of cleanliness? Do you find it changes depending on which kind of property you go to?
13:16When you pay for accommodation, wherever it is, you expect a clean room, and it should be clean regardless of where you are staying.
13:24You go in to some places with some sort of expectation. This is a very rural place.
13:29I'm expecting to see spiders. So, for me, that's an expectation I'm already going in with.
13:34I will come across a few spiders. You know what I mean? So...
13:37Yeah, but, you know, you want a clean kitchen, you want a clean bathroom, don't you?
13:40Yeah. You want... I think it's still... You expect it to be clean, wouldn't you?
13:43Yeah, definitely. For me, I have my expectation, and if it's...
13:47It doesn't matter if I pay £10 a night or £300 a night, I still want it clean.
13:51Yeah.
13:55Laura and Claudia live in a different part of the country to where we do.
13:58In a way, in a different world to us.
13:59And, you know, this year has happened to be everybody's complaining about spiders.
14:02Tension mounting. Claudia's looking ahead.
14:06Roger, Sue, we're coming to you next. What can we expect?
14:09Our property is quite different from everywhere else.
14:13Mmm!
14:14It's very bespoke.
14:16And I think the only place you possibly will find something like it
14:20is up in the Highlands of Scotland.
14:23Mmm!
14:24It is self-checking.
14:25And it is self-catering, but we do leave a little welcome basket for you.
14:30So I've already had to cook breakfast for everyone,
14:32and I have to do it two more times.
14:34I think that's quite selfish, to be honest.
14:36LAUGHTER
14:37I am expecting from Roger and Sue absolute perfection.
14:41Everything is super immaculate, bespoke, and it's an experience,
14:46so my expectation is up here right now.
14:50Drink's done, it's back to the cottages.
14:53Isn't this a nice cosy room to sit by the wood burner?
14:58Yeah, really nice feature.
15:00Ah, this is more like it.
15:06Morning has broken in Carmarthenshire.
15:09I slept really well last night.
15:11Yeah, I slept really well. Less sleep I've had.
15:14How did you sleep last night?
15:15Yeah, really well, thanks, yeah.
15:17Good, you?
15:18Yeah, good. Comfy bed.
15:20Kumya Holiday Cottages is a self-catered stay,
15:23and host Airless hopes her guests will be cooking on gas.
15:27Here at Kumyaar, we provide everything for self-catering,
15:30and I hope they'll have a delicious breakfast,
15:32even if they can't cook.
15:35With breakfast prep underway, the guests suss out the set-up,
15:38We've got gas, we've got pots, we've got pans,
15:40we've got what we need to do the job.
15:42A saucer in there for the beans.
15:46Put that out on the side.
15:48I think I've got everything to cook, Laura.
15:50I don't think we're missing anything.
15:52But for some of the group, it doesn't all scrub up.
15:55Not the cleanest of cookers.
15:57There's a lot of grease up around here.
15:59Oh, it's a bit gummy. The bean juice.
16:02I, er, don't like that very much.
16:05The facilities were good. We had everything we needed.
16:07Obviously, one dirty pan is what it is.
16:10Maybe she could look over everything, but it is what it is.
16:13With the cooked stuff close to completion, the guests plate up.
16:17Well done. Thanks very much. You're welcome.
16:19And as they dig in, it's the overall stay that's on the menu.
16:23I really like Ellis' place. I think it's cosy, cottagey, rural.
16:29It's comfortable enough. Loads of space.
16:32You've got everything you need at the end of the day.
16:34Other than having no bathroom like yourself.
16:36I love the setting and I love Ellis as a person.
16:39I think she's a wonderful host.
16:41I really want her to do well.
16:43I think she's got the bones of something amazing here for her and her family.
16:46There's just a few cleanliness issues which would need to be resolved for me to come back to stay.
16:52For me, I would love to come back in 12 to 18 months' time and see what she's managed to do with the place.
16:58Cottages digested. The guests chew over the next visit.
17:02I don't know what to expect. He's a sheep farmer, so if there's no sheep on site, I'll be quite disappointed.
17:07I have got very high expectations.
17:10Yeah, I've got very high expectations of going to Sue and Rogers.
17:13Do you think they'll give you a run for your money?
17:15Yeah, I do. Maybe Sue and Roger are our competition.
17:18I am a bit worried, being the last to go, that they might be a bit nitpicky at us.
17:23But I also hope that what we've got will just blow them away.
17:27Breakfast done. The guests get settled in to complete the anonymous feedback forms.
17:33How were your hosts at Comeyar Holiday Cottages?
17:36Good checking information.
17:38Could have done with a digital guide.
17:40Nine? Nine.
17:41How clean was Comeyar Cottages? Bathroom and kitchen were disappointing.
17:46There was cobwebs in the kitchen.
17:47Dust behind the TV.
17:48And I think a six.
17:50A lot of little things adding up. Dust.
17:53Cobwebs. Bathroom seals.
17:55I think I'd be happy with a six.
17:56We had quite a few issues.
17:58Cleanliness not standard.
18:00I just feel like it needs a really good deep clean.
18:02I think it's going to have to be a five.
18:04How were the facilities? Broken, rusted shower, radiators was leaking a bit of rust.
18:09Odd coloured lights.
18:10I'd say a seven. A seven? Yeah.
18:13Loved the wood burner.
18:15Downstairs. Bathroom. Not ideal. Damp behind the toilet. Taps old and outdated. It's a five.
18:25How did you sleep? Slept like a baby.
18:27Ten. I was about ten.
18:28It was the best night's sleep of the week.
18:31A big ten.
18:32How was breakfast?
18:34We did have everything we needed.
18:35Check over equipment prior to checking. Yeah.
18:38Breakfast was a solid nine out of ten.
18:40So the big question, would you stay here again?
18:43We're away from what we're used to and it's peaceful.
18:46I think it's a lovely place and I'd be happy to stay here again.
18:48And so would I.
18:49But as it is, right at this second, no, I wouldn't.
18:53As it is, we wouldn't stay here again.
18:55So it's a no.
18:59Now the guests must pay what they think their stay was worth.
19:03I think that's a fair price too, don't you?
19:05Yep.
19:06The cash will be kept secret until the end of the competition.
19:09But for now, Erliss and Demelza can see if Kumjar hit a high bar.
19:14Right, let's have their thoughts.
19:17How were your hosts at Kumjar Holiday Cottage?
19:20Nine.
19:21That's quite good.
19:22Good check information.
19:23That's good.
19:24Guidebook, great.
19:25Would like digital copy.
19:27That's something we could look at, yeah.
19:29How clean was Kumjar Holiday Cottage?
19:31Five.
19:32I'm disappointed with that, I must say.
19:34Cleaning us not to standard.
19:36I thought, you know, it was clean.
19:38Place needed a deep clean.
19:40Well, there's nothing I can do.
19:41I cleaned everything from top to bottom.
19:43How did you sleep?
19:44Oh, ten.
19:45Oh, I'm happy now.
19:48Slept like a baby.
19:49Well, that's good.
19:52Do you think it'll stay again?
19:53I would hope so.
19:54No.
19:55No.
19:56Disappointing, but they were.
20:00One down, two to go.
20:01Let's go to the second one.
20:03How clean was Kumjar Holiday Cottage?
20:06Six.
20:07Okay.
20:08Okay.
20:09A lot of little things adding up.
20:11What are the little things then?
20:12Dust, cobwebs, bathroom seals.
20:15I'm very disappointed with that.
20:16There's a lot to keep on top, but I, you know, I always clean to a standard.
20:20How were the facilities?
20:22Seven.
20:23Okay.
20:24Broken, rusted shower.
20:25I wasn't aware it was broken, it was rusted.
20:27Rusted radiator leaking onto carpet.
20:30I'm fully aware of the rusted radiator.
20:32We need them all changed with time.
20:34Odd coloured lights.
20:36It's just, that's just preference, I would say, you know.
20:39How was breakfast?
20:40Nine.
20:41Good, yeah.
20:42We had everything we needed.
20:43Very happy.
20:44Check over equipment prior to check in.
20:47I always check them, we pulled everything out.
20:53I think you should be positive, I think.
20:54Would you stay here again?
20:56Yes!
20:57That is a relief, yeah.
21:00Last but not least, okay, number three.
21:02How clean was Kumjar Holiday Cottages?
21:05Six.
21:06I thought it would be higher than that, to be honest.
21:08The bathroom and kitchen were disappointing.
21:11A bit disappointing, but you know, everybody's cleanliness is different, isn't it?
21:14Cobwebs in the kitchen.
21:16I can't see them.
21:17I honestly can't.
21:19I don't know where they've seen them.
21:20Dust behind the TV.
21:22I dusted it clean, but they were okay.
21:24How were the facilities?
21:25Five.
21:26Very disappointing, yeah.
21:27Loved the wood burner.
21:29Good.
21:30Downstairs bathroom, not ideal.
21:31They would most probably preferred one upstairs, maybe.
21:34Yeah, but they've got a toilet upstairs, don't they?
21:36Yeah.
21:37Damp behind the toilet.
21:38It happens because they're stone walls, don't they?
21:40Taps old and outdated.
21:42New taps need to be placed there.
21:44That's fair enough, okay.
21:45How did you sleep?
21:46Ten.
21:47Good.
21:48Best night's sleep of the week.
21:50That's nice.
21:51That is a massive compliment.
21:55Would they stay again?
21:56I don't know.
21:57I haven't got a clue.
21:58No.
21:59I am gutted.
22:00I think the competitive side is starting to show.
22:03And I just feel better have a good place now.
22:05They have to be perfect.
22:07Yeah.
22:08Yeah.

22:17Bye, Roger!
22:18Go on!
22:20As the guests get back to nature...
22:22I think Roger will have me in his flock.
