00:00I've got two hands and there's two chocolates.
00:02You know what I mean?
00:03Four sets of holiday hosts.
00:05I think this is done to a really high standard.
00:08Check in to each other's places.
00:10Good morning.
00:11Welcome to Cherry Tree.
00:12And get to grips with one another.
00:14Underneath the toilet seat, a stain from a previous guest.
00:17You just lifted the toilet seat up.
00:19It was there all around the underside of the seat.
00:21That won't happen again, I'm sure, in their establishment.
00:24Today, the group cave in.
00:26Would anybody like to give us a bit of a song today?
00:30Ah!
00:31Brilliant.
00:32As they battle.
00:34We've still got a long way to go.
00:35There's lots of things on the agenda to do.
00:38To be named Best Value for Money.
00:40How clean was the George Inn?
00:42Five there, which is a cause for concern.
00:50The first visit of the week is to Tideswell in Derbyshire.
00:54And the George Inn, owned by Richard Fletcher.
00:57Ably assisted by brother Mick Fletcher.
01:00A pair of kindred spirits.
01:02Rich, you can rely on him.
01:03You can depend on him.
01:04If he sets his mind to something, he's going to do it.
01:06He's never going to give up.
01:07Yeah, both of us would drop everything to go and help the other one out, if need be.
01:12Guests looking to return the favour can choose from one of four rooms for up to £160 a night, with a selection of individually priced breakfasts chosen from a pre-order menu, in a place the hosts think is picture perfect.
01:26I think it's beautiful.
01:28It's full of charm and character.
01:29Each room has shower robes, toiletries, everything that's in the fridge is complimentary.
01:35If I turned up here as a guest, I wouldn't find a lot to complain about.
01:40And with their competitors incoming, for this pair, it's about the takeaway.
01:44My ideal would be that people come here and enjoy themselves.
01:48But, you know, we're open to critical feedback.
01:50That's how you improve.
01:52About to arrive at a day's first guests.
01:55I spy.
01:56My little I.
01:57Something beginning with S.
02:00Cheap.
02:01Oh, that's too simple.
02:04To the letter are Simon and Carol Bray, owners of Cherry Tree Guest House in Bridlington, in the east riding of Yorkshire.
02:11A couple in it for the long run.
02:14Me and Carol have been together 24 years.
02:15We got married 14 years ago.
02:18Correct.
02:19I'm impressed.
02:20Yeah, yeah.
02:20I'm checking on the diary there today.
02:25Guests wanting to save the date will find five rooms for up to £120 a night,
02:30and discover if life's a beach.
02:33The Cherry Tree Guest House is a very warm, friendly seaside B&B.
02:37Yeah.
02:37We feel that we're the higher end, and our aim is basically just to make their stay here as comfortable as possible,
02:42and then they can go out and enjoy the seaside of Bridlington.
02:45And this pair are hoping to cruise the competition.
02:48We will not go to anyone's with a view to find fault.
02:51We want to go there, meet some really nice people, and maybe steal a few ideas.
02:56Could do that.
03:01Really impressive.
03:02Beautiful, isn't it?
03:03Shall we have to take a look?
03:03Yeah.
03:05Hello.
03:05Welcome to the George.
03:07I'm Richard, my brother Mick.
03:08Hi, how are you?
03:09I'm Simon.
03:09This is Carol.
03:10Great to meet you.
03:11Likewise.
03:11You're in our Hardwick room this evening, which is £140 a night.
03:15Anything in the room is complimentary, and there's a breakfast menu and price listing in your room.
03:19Wonderful.
03:20Thank you very much.
03:20Thank you very much.
03:25Oh, nice decor.
03:27A bit quick with the lamps as well.
03:28There's certainly some features going on there.
03:31Very nice.
03:32With Simon and Carol abuzz, the next guests are ready for a breather.
03:36I am so excited to get away.
03:39We're going to meet new people, and we're going to be well behaved.
03:42We're never well behaved.
03:43Acting up, our friends and colleagues Laura Johnson and Lucy Neville, of Clementine's Guest House in York, North Yorkshire.
03:53A pair of ladies who lunch.
03:55You eat a lot of soup.
03:57Every time that you know that you've got a meeting or somebody coming in, you think, there she is, she's got another bowl of soup.
04:03I actually forgot that I did have that as an annoying habit.
04:06You have definitely got that as an annoying habit, yeah.
04:08Guests looking to lap it up can pick from 27 rooms for up to £233.10 a night in a venue the hosts hope will bear fruit.
04:20I would sum up Clementine's as a quirky, unique, boutique hideaway guest house.
04:27We've got the wonderful lounge.
04:29You've got a delicious breakfast to start the day.
04:31I think you would be hard pushed to want more.
04:35I would agree with that.
04:36And when the colleagues get a break away, they hope the place scrubs up.
04:41I would say I'm a person that's genuinely pretty happy to stay anywhere, but as long as it's clean, I don't really mind the rest.
04:51Hello, welcome to the George. I'm Richard, this is my brother Mick.
04:54How do you do?
04:54Hiya, I'm Laura and this is Lucy.
04:56Good to meet you.
04:57You're in our chasm's room tonight, which is £160.
05:00Wonderful. Thank you so much.
05:02Enjoy your stay.
05:03It's quite big.
05:06It's light and airy.
05:08Beautiful windows.
05:09They are stunning.
05:11With everything pain-sailing for Laura and Lucy, today's last guests are digging in.
05:17Have you got anything to eat?
05:18Got a brisket?
05:20No.
05:21No, no, no good.
05:23No, no, no, nasty.
05:25Biting off more than they can chew are Johnny Brown and Sasha Smith, owners of Haystack's Country Retreats in Burstwith, North Yorkshire.
05:34A couple who keep it in the family.
05:36Sasha is a person that is kind and caring.
05:39She looks after us all, including our three kids.
05:42To describe Johnny, I would say he was Captain Chaos.
05:45You are a nightmare, aren't you?
05:46Yeah.
05:46So we have four children. We have three children and Johnny.
05:49Yes.
05:51Those looking to kid around can choose between two shepherd's huts and a bothy for up to £175 a night and shed the shackles of modern life.
06:02Haystack's Country Retreats is an escape to reconnect with each other.
06:06In the most picturesque location, its own secluded woodland of four acres.
06:12We put ourselves in the customer's shoes and thought, right, if we went away to a shepherd's foot, what would we want?
06:17And that's what we've tried to bring to life, really, with our site.
06:20Yeah.
06:21And these two have eyes on the prize.
06:23If we won the competition, it would mean the world to us.
06:25To see that hard work reflected back would be really good. Very emotional.
06:31Don't start crying again.
06:32Hello.
06:35Hiya. Welcome to the George. I'm Richard. This is my brother Mick.
06:38How do you do?
06:39Hiya.
06:39I'm Johnny. This is Sasha.
06:40Good to meet you, guys.
06:41Hello.
06:41Nice to meet you.
06:42You'll be in our Basilow room tonight, which is £140.
06:45Thank you very much.
06:46Cheers.
06:49Well, this is a nice, bright room.
06:51Yeah.
06:52And the temperature's nice.
06:53Yeah, it's a nice temperature.
06:55With the hosts out of the way, the guests can go all out at the George Inn.
07:00Oh, it's actually really comfy.
07:03Yeah, a bit of bounce.
07:04So that's complimentary, though.
07:05That's really nice.
07:06Did you actually?
07:06All of it's complimentary.
07:08You said anything in the room is, yes.
07:09Fresh milk, fresh juice.
07:10Hey.
07:11Carol's milk.
07:12The new I was coming.
07:13This is great, though.
07:14Easy to use.
07:15Yeah.
07:16I think it's pretty good.
07:17I do.
07:17It's good.
07:18Good offering.
07:18Yeah.
07:19I think the windowsill could have been a bit cleaner.
07:22Yeah, it's a bit of a state.
07:23There's a lot of hairs.
07:24There's definitely a lack of that final attention to detail.
07:28Yeah.
07:29Come out, Bobby Dazzo.
07:30I do need a belt.
07:31No, there is no belt.
07:34Sizeable stain there.
07:35This one there.
07:36Yeah, and there.
07:36There.
07:37No, that's quite bad.
07:39That's like a cigarette burn or something, I think.
07:40It's on the mattress.
07:42Yeah, it's on the mattress.
07:43Oh, dear.
07:43It's a hair.
07:44It's quite a long hair.
07:46Oh, we've got a map of India on the side here.
07:48A lot of stains and a lot of hairs.
07:50And that's a curly-wurly one there, look.
07:52Yeah, that's disappointing.
07:54That's the fan in there as well.
07:55That's decent.
07:56Don't be handy.
07:56Point of fingers.
07:57There's a bit of space there as well.
07:59It's certainly suitable for what we need.
08:00Absolutely.
08:01Oh, there's a lot of dust on the back here.
08:03That hasn't been wiped at all.
08:05There's dribble marks.
08:07Oh, yes, yes, yes.
08:08On the pillars.
08:10Oh.
08:10Small, but really classy, really sharp.
08:12There's spent some money on this, actually.
08:13It's really nice.
08:14I'm impressed with this.
08:15Yeah.
08:15What's your thoughts on a lot of staining up there?
08:18Nasty.
08:19What is that?
08:20It looks like curry.
08:21Under the toilet lid?
08:23That's spotless, is that?
08:23That's the type of toilet we like.
08:25Yeah, this en suite.
08:26It's really hard to fault it.
08:27Room inspection's almost over.
08:29Johnny and Sasha are full of hot air.
08:32Oh, what's this?
08:32Hair dryer.
08:33Go on.
08:34I don't need it.
08:35Put it back in.
08:36Laura and Lucy aren't fans.
08:39Oh, my God, the extraction.
08:41Oh, it's blocked.
08:42And Simon and Carol are hanging out.
08:45If I went down to breakfast and that's where I'm going, I'm going to eat sausage.
08:47Oh, a bit of chilli-willy.
08:53Tideswell sits just east of Buxton, home to Silverlands, the highest football stadium in England,
09:00which sits at 1,000 feet above sea level.
09:02And where today, hosts Richard and Mick are hoping to score with a trip to a limestone cavern.
09:10Do you know what?
09:10I do have a head torch in the car.
09:12Lisa remembered walking boats.
09:14Yeah.
09:15Winning.
09:16And with tour guide Angela at the helm, the group head down under.
09:20As we walk around the cave, the calcite does make some very strange and weird and wonderful faces and shapes on the calcite.
09:26So, do have a look around.
09:27Just here, we have our man-eating giant skull.
09:31Above him, we have a dragon's head.
09:33And just down to the left a little bit, we have another skull as well.
09:37Two eyes, a nose and a big smiley face there.
09:39Now, the stalactites in this part of the cave, these are unique as well to this chamber because these are actually hollow.
09:45How often have they fallen on any visitors?
09:47None, as far as I'm aware of on my tours, anyway.
09:50If it fell on you, they're so delicate that you probably wouldn't even notice, to be fair.
09:54That was just amazing.
09:55Yeah, really good.
09:56And the lady who showed us round was very passionate about the caves.
10:01Yeah, it was interesting.
10:02As the tour moves deeper into the cavern, the group learns what's in a name.
10:08Now, we believe the cave is named after an outlaw called John Poole.
10:11Not a very nice man.
10:12Described as a murderer, thief and man-eating giants.
10:15Do you reckon it's haunted?
10:16I like to think there's a presence in here.
10:18We've been told that our place is haunted.
10:21And whereabouts is she ghost, upstairs or downstairs?
10:23Downstairs in the dining area, and she's looking for a husband who died in a war.
10:30We're running that way.
10:33Rich and Mick, I thought, was her to be really good.
10:35They seem genuinely interested in it themselves, and just two really nice guys, yeah.
10:38Now, because the river's not in the cave at the moment, what we can get in the cave is very good acoustics.
10:47So, would anybody like to give us a bit of a song today?
10:50I could do with peacocking, and that's about as good as it gets.
10:57Brilliant.
10:58That's it, really.
11:00That's pretty pretty, isn't it?
11:02Johnny doesn't take himself too seriously.
11:05He did a good job ice-breaking.
11:07Yeah.
11:07I think it helped put everybody more relaxed.
11:09Yeah.
11:09And with the visit coming to an end, some of the guests are ready to chillax.
11:15This afternoon was amazing.
11:17Yeah, it was good.
11:18Really interesting.
11:19A little bit chilly.
11:20What, is it seven degrees down there?
11:22Yeah.
11:22So, it'll be good to get back to the George and have a couple of drinks with the guys.
11:25The first visit of the week is to Tideswell in Derbyshire, and the George Inn, where the
11:38guests have eyes on the morning meal.
11:40OK, so pre-ordering breakfast for tomorrow morning.
11:42Yep.
11:43Beans on toast, one slice, and some bacon on the side, please.
11:47Tonight, hosts Richard and Mick have invited their guests downstairs to the bar for a beverage.
11:52Cheers.
11:53Cheers.
11:53Cheers.
11:53Cheers.
11:54And with bottoms up, Sasha wants the down low.
11:58Just interested about how long you've had this place, and a bit of history about your
12:02work here.
12:03Right.
12:03We've only been here just over six months.
12:06Both of us have work and business outside of this place, actually.
12:10We're both involved in plumbing and heating.
12:12But for both of us, doing this is the thing that gives us most fun.
12:16So, what are both your roles here, then?
12:17To use a posh title, chef proprietor.
12:19I kind of run the place on a day-to-day basis, and I kind of lead the kitchen.
12:24My brother Mick is the pastry chef.
12:27I get a buzz out of it.
12:28It's like a bug, isn't it?
12:28Yeah, yeah, yeah.
12:29There's nothing that's a greater buzz than sending food out and people saying something
12:34nice about it.
12:35Richard and Mick are characters.
12:37I think Mick's obviously quite quiet.
12:39Richard's definitely the lively of the two, but he seems very passionate about what he's
12:42done.
12:42It does.
12:43It shows that they care.
12:44I think they are a good house.
12:46They're full of character.
12:47Yeah.
12:47They've hosted us well tonight.
12:49What's been the biggest challenge that you've found within the first six months of starting
12:53here?
12:54Several.
12:54Let's try and, like, pot them all up.
12:57We came here and found there was an issue with rodents that we've dealt with.
13:02They chewed some wires.
13:03They placed nearly caught on fire.
13:05There were problems with the heating system.
13:08Luckily, I've got a brother who's an efficient plumber who was able to sort all that out.
13:12We had a water leak one Friday tea time.
13:15You must have been very resilient, so I've kept on going.
13:18Mentally, we're pretty tough people, yeah.
13:21We've still got a long way to go.
13:23There's lots of things on the agenda to do.
13:26We'd just like to try and make it as comfortable as we can.
13:29I feel like I've got a lot more empathy for him and his brother now.
13:33I think they've embraced a new operation, and I think that's quite exciting and a difficult
13:38challenge.
13:38Some of the bits we've seen when we first came in that are sort of attention to detail.
13:43I should imagine it's going to take them a while to get on top of the whole set-up,
13:47but they're getting there, yeah.
13:50Pitfalls probed.
13:51Richard turns the tables on his guests.
13:53I was wondering how long you guys have been doing what you're doing.
13:56Me and Carol have been in hospitality for the whole period of five months.
14:02Wow.
14:03I've been in hospitality for just under ten years now.
14:07I started in hospitality at the age of 13.
14:11I get a buzz from the fact that no other industry offers you a different day every day.
14:18No two days are the same.
14:19Lucy and Laura have got a lot of experience in the industry.
14:23I should imagine really professional.
14:25I'm expecting very high standards.
14:27Yeah.
14:28Drink's done, it's all off to bed, where Simon and Carol have a marked response.
14:33We found that one.
14:34Found this one.
14:35And you've got quite a stained pillow.
14:37Yeah.
14:38Night.
14:38Night.
14:38Night.
14:39See you later.
14:39It's a new day in Tideswell, and the guests are rising from their slumber.
14:51How did you sleep last night?
14:53Do you know what?
14:54This was a very comfy bed.
14:55Yeah, I think it was far too cold, and the heating needed to be on, and it wasn't.
15:01Downstairs, with pre-orders already underway, Richard and Mick are cooking on gas.
15:06I hope that breakfast is enjoyable.
15:09We like to use very high-quality ingredients.
15:11We do feel that we send out quite a nice breakfast.
15:15And with the last guests seated...
15:17Morning.
15:17Morning.
15:18Morning.
15:18Morning.
15:19Hello.
15:20Mick is out to meet and greet.
15:21Morning.
15:22Morning.
15:23OK, we'll get your pre-orders sorted and brought at your tables.
15:27With the pre-ordered hot stuff good to go...
15:29Toast and jam, scrambled egg on toast.
15:33Team member Harry delivers the goods.
15:35And there is your toast with jam and butter.
15:38There you go.
15:39Full English down.
15:40Lovely, thank you very much.
15:41The sausage are on the side.
15:44Ooh, that was a nice egg.
15:45Yeah.
15:46Nice and yellow as well.
15:50Mine's really good.
15:51Yeah.
15:51Egg perfect, bacon perfect, and the roll's really soft.
15:55It's nice.
15:55You're excellent.
15:56It do look buttery, though.
15:57I do like really buttery, smothered toast.
16:00Sausage is really good.
16:00Yeah, it is a really tasty breakfast.
16:02Yeah.
16:03Yeah, it's really tasty.
16:04I thought the sausage was really good quality.
16:06I thought the egg was really nice and cooked really well.
16:08I really enjoyed the breakfast.
16:09The breakfast was good.
16:10Breakfast was good.
16:11Really tasty, really on point.
16:13Can't say anything bad about it.
16:14It was a great breakfast.
16:15Food getting rave reviews.
16:17It's Richard and Mick, who are hot news.
16:19How do you think our hosts have done?
16:21Very well.
16:22I think they were very welcoming on arrival,
16:24and I think they're very approachable.
16:26It's good.
16:26They care, don't they, which is really important.
16:28Massively important, isn't it?
16:29Yeah.
16:29Yeah.
16:29Definitely, I agree with that, yeah.
16:31I think Richard and Mick have been really pleasant hosts.
16:35Yeah, they were friendly.
16:36They were very welcoming.
16:38Hosts hitting the spot.
16:39Simon wants a flavour of the future.
16:42I think we can agree that it's been a good first visit.
16:44Yeah.
16:44So excited to find out where we're going next.
16:46So who can enlighten us on that one?
16:48Well...
16:48Ta-da!
16:49So we are actually a boutique guest house.
16:53Oh, wow.
16:53Oh.
16:54And a bit more sizable than here.
16:56So how many rooms do you actually have?
16:57We've got 27 rooms.
16:58Wow.
16:59Wow.
16:59So it keeps us busy.
17:0227-room boutique.
17:0327-room boutique B&B.
17:05I'm assuming something a little bit zany, a little bit wacky.
17:07Yeah, I'm really excited to go.
17:09Breakfast finished.
17:11The guests head upstairs to fill out the anonymous feedback forms.
17:14Ready?
17:15Yes.
17:16Let's go.
17:16How were your hosts at the George Inn?
17:18Mick and Richard were really friendly.
17:21I'd give them a ten.
17:22Yeah, let's give them a ten.
17:24How clean was the George Inn?
17:26Mmm.
17:26It could have been cleaner.
17:28Yeah, a lot of stains on pillows, big stains on the curtains.
17:31There were hairs and stains on the mattress.
17:34A six.
17:35I think it's fair, yeah.
17:36Marks on the mattress.
17:38And a hair.
17:39Stains on pillows.
17:40So the positive for the cleanliness was the ensuite,
17:42because I thought that was really clean.
17:43Yeah, sparkling.
17:44Yeah, and really impressive.
17:45So overall, I think it's a six.
17:48Attention to detail wasn't there.
17:50Quite a lot of stains, hairs, dust, the extractor fan.
17:54So I think probably five.
17:56How were the facilities?
17:57Excellent facilities.
17:58Yeah.
17:58Loved the offer of the complimentary drinks.
18:00Ten?
18:01Yeah, over ten.
18:02That was some nice touches.
18:03There was just one of the belts missing.
18:05Missing from the robes.
18:06On the robe.
18:06Yeah.
18:06Yeah, I think a nine's fair.
18:08Yeah.
18:09How did you sleep?
18:11Comfy bed and pillows.
18:13Sadly, it was too cold for us, as the radiators were not on.
18:18And so we're going to give them a five?
18:19Yeah.
18:20How was breakfast?
18:21Brilliant.
18:21Well cooked.
18:22Yeah, fantastic breakfast.
18:24I think it has to be definitely a ten.
18:25It has to be a ten.
18:25Definitely.
18:26I really enjoyed my breakfast.
18:28Excellent tasty breakfast.
18:29Yeah.
18:30It's got to be a ten.
18:31Ten?
18:31Yeah.
18:33Would you stay here again?
18:35A few cleaning issues need addressing, but yeah, I'd stay here again.
18:38Overall, we've had a good time.
18:39We've really enjoyed it, haven't we?
18:41No.
18:41No.
18:42I think just because of the cleanliness, unfortunately, it's going to have to be a no.
18:49Now the guests must pay what they think their stay was worth.
18:52Does that seem fair?
18:53It does, yeah.
18:54The cash will be kept secret until the end of the competition.
18:57But for now, Richard and Mick can see if their guests had a right royal stay at the George Inn.
19:03And we are hosts at the George Inn.
19:05Ten, which is satisfying, really friendly, very pleasing to hear that.
19:10How clean was the George Inn?
19:12Five here, which is a cause for concern.
19:15Attention to detail, not there.
19:17Stains, hairs, dust.
19:19I know that our rooms are cleaned thoroughly between each guest visit.
19:24Extract a fan, maybe it was dismantling and cleaning, maybe it was replacing.
19:29How did you sleep?
19:30We have a five.
19:31It is frustrating.
19:33It's not good enough.
19:34Bed's comfy, pillow's comfy.
19:36The room wasn't warm enough.
19:38The heating system as we inherited it, it's either all on or all off.
19:42The way forward is to zone the heating so each room can be turned on and off by the guest quite easily.
19:49Have a safe journey.
19:50Thank you for having us.
19:51Thank you, bye.
19:52So let's see whether these people would stop here again in the future.
19:56And it is a no.
19:57If the people were cold and couldn't sleep, I mean, that makes perfect sense to me.
20:01Let's have a look at what the next person says.
20:05How clean was the Georgian?
20:07Six.
20:07Stain on pillows and on curtains.
20:10One of the things we've planned is new curtains.
20:13We did recently have new pillows, so how there are stains on them, I don't know.
20:17Air and stains on the mattress.
20:19Again, replacement mattresses were something that were on our horizon.
20:23How are the facilities?
20:25We've got a nine for that.
20:26Very, very pleasing.
20:28Nice touches.
20:29Great.
20:29I'd agree with them.
20:30The belt missing from the robe.
20:32So that's probably an issue to discuss with the supplier.
20:35How was breakfast?
20:36A ten for that.
20:37Very, very pleased with that.
20:39Well cooked.
20:40Fantastic.
20:41I'll take that.
20:42Hope you've enjoyed your stay.
20:43Enjoy the rest of your day.
20:44Bye-bye.
20:45Shall we find out if we'd stay here again?
20:48Yeah, we would.
20:49Happy days.
20:51Well, shall we go to the next one?
20:54How clean was the Georgian?
20:55We've got a six for that.
20:56I think it's something we need to take a look at.
20:59Marks on mattress and hair.
21:01Stains on pillows.
21:02We will be replacing mattresses, carpets.
21:04In terms of things like a hair, we perhaps need to have a look at housekeeping and see
21:08where we can tighten up the process there.
21:09The en suite was sparkly and impressive, which is extremely pleasing.
21:14How were the facilities?
21:15A ten.
21:15Cannot grumble with that.
21:17Excellent facilities.
21:18Love the offer of complimentary drinks.
21:20It's an example of something that I did because I'd like it.
21:24Somebody else has liked it too.
21:25How was breakfast?
21:27Ten out of ten here.
21:28Just go to ten out of food.
21:30This is what we're both passionate about.
21:32Excellent, tasty breakfast.
21:33That's exactly what we want.
21:35The quality of the produce that we use shines through.
21:38Nice to meet you and have a safe journey.
21:40Cheers.
21:40Would they stay here again?
21:43No.
21:44Slightly disappointed by that, but then again, it's their prerogative.
21:48Yeah.
21:49Some great constructive criticism in there.
21:52If our rooms haven't quite cut the mustard, I'm expecting that they're going to stay in
21:57three spectacular places in the next few days.
22:00Bring it on.
22:01Next time, when Laura and Lucy host...
22:04Hi.
22:05Good morning.
22:06Dreams come true.
22:08Whoa, wowee.
22:09And I wanted a four-poster bed.
22:11This is high-end.
22:12This is lovely.
22:13And there's a matter of taste.
22:15It's a little bit gritty in texture.
22:18We have a warning next time.
22:19And there's a little bit of passion.
22:20Yeah.
22:20Yeah.
