00:00Welcome to the oldest street in Leeds, Kirkgate. I'm Andrew Hutchinson at a start of a journey
00:06celebrating the people and places of Yorkshire's largest city. This is the A to Z of Leeds.
00:17From A for Armly to Z for the Zoological and Botanical Gardens, I'm going to be visiting
00:22many of the suburbs of our great city. We'll also be meeting many Leeds locals along the way.
00:28Leeds his home to an eclectic mix of people and places and has a real sense of pride and community.
00:44During my 30-year career I've been so so lucky in meeting some fascinating people covering stories
00:50in suburbs right across the city. Let's start our A to Z which could mean A for Adle or Woodley,
00:57Allerton-Bywater or Aberford but we're starting with A for Armly. Let's meet somebody who knows the area
01:04really well. Councillor Lou Cunningham has called Armly home for the best part of two decades.
01:12In terms of community, Armly is still one of the places where lots of people know each other,
01:17lots of people still help each other. We've got lots of faith groups that work together,
01:22lots of community groups that work together, we've got arts and culture. I've raised my son here as a
01:28lone parent and as he got older he started saying, Mum I'm not coming to Armly Town Street with you,
01:33it takes us an hour or two hours to go up and down because everyone stops to chat with us.
01:38I think that tells us a lot about how friendly and welcoming the community is.
01:42Here are some other A's of Leeds and we'll be trying to include as many people and places for
01:49each letter as we can. So, where to next? Let's head to B for Beeston.
01:57There's a wide range of people, really wide range of people in Beeston and that is beautiful and
02:01brilliant, sometimes challenging but I think that people on the whole do well at getting along together
02:06and collaborating together and making good things happen. I would give a special shout out to Beeston
02:10Festival, really good event in the life of our community. I don't want to kind of gloss it as a
02:16as a lovely lovely place always but at the same time I do think there is really remarkable
02:21community pride, a lot of people are really bothered about Beeston, lots of people are very active in
02:25the community. Hopefully the next few years is going to see a lot more street art and we hope to make
02:30this part of Leeds the street art capital of the north.
02:32Be is also for Badsey, Bramhope, Bramley and Burley. Be also brings to mind Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow
02:43and there's also Leeds Bridge. He has links to filmmaker Louis LePronze who shot for the first
02:49time moving traffic in 1888. We also can't forget Barrick in Helmet, famous for its maypole.
