00:06Mariners favor because you get Logan Gilbert opposite of Jack Flaherty that said pretty good

00:11first outing from Flaherty does that change the way you feel about this pitching matchup here

00:15and how much of a of an advantage to the Mariners you think Gilbert is against Flaherty given that

00:20Flaherty did look like he got a bit of a spark in that last time out and the stuff was no doubt

00:26better than we saw through the regular season it's just hard for me to buy in after facing the

00:31Guardians I'm sorry right they came into the postseason with the lowest batting average in

00:37baseball but to your point the stuff did look good and he has proven before that he can throw in big

00:42time moments but he's not coming off the best season and this will be a huge start for him

00:48and now the Mariners everybody talks about how bad they are on the road and their record would show

00:54that they are a below 500 baseball team this year but they actually have a higher WRC plus on the

01:00road against righties than they do at home but Detroit also a much better offense at home 107 WRC

01:06plus against righties again 100 is league average they're 7 percent better than a league average

01:12offense 90 on the road 10 percent below league average Jack Flaherty's ERA is a run lower at home

01:20he's faced Seattle once this year he's thrown five innings two runs Gilbert is interesting

01:26because there are some concerning numbers and there are then there are other numbers that make me think

01:31he's going to dominate Gilbert has troubles on the road 474 ERA on the road this season compared to a

01:38224 ERA at home and if you look at the strikeout rate 13 K's per nine at home 10 K's per nine on the

01:46road opponents are hitting huge opponents are hitting 261 on the road against him versus 158 at home

01:54those are stark differences yeah I'd say that's that's that's legitimate like that those are splits

02:01but here's talk about splits here's something that I think he can dominate with that Blue Jays pitchers

02:09have shown against the Yankees these righty fastball guys with splitters against these lefties

02:15have proven to be very effective how do you quiet the Tigers lineup Kerry Carpenter Riley Green put

02:24them on ice so if Gilbert can be dominant against those two lefties and just do his job against

02:33a lot of so-so right-handed bats maybe outside of Gleyber Torres maybe outside of Spencer Torkelson

02:40Gilbert has a path here to true domination and the Tigers boast one of the highest strikeout rates

02:47in baseball especially against righties so this could be a Gilbert start where after we're like

02:53all right he struck out 10 he threw six shutty but if he's not landing that splitter and he looks like

03:01the pitcher that he has been on the road this season that's how the Tigers win because if they get a lead

03:06here the Mariners offense is still kind of like this right I'm giving you good numbers about them

03:11on the road in order to kind of hype them up the thing is their offense has not looked good so far

03:17without two big Jorge Polanco home runs they're going to Detroit 2-0 now shout out Jorge Polanco

03:23right like I'm not I'm not taking anything away from them but it's not like the Mariners offense has

03:28looked explosive at all and Josh Naylor did not take the flight to Detroit yeah wife is having a baby

03:35yeah so if he's again not in the lineup that's an important lefty a lefty that used to play for

03:41the Cleveland Guardians who has seen Jack Flaherty plenty of times he's not going to be there

03:46and that's why I think to answer the first question which started the segment is this the best series

03:52it might be because of all these little nooks and crannies yeah how Tigers are more well managed

03:59they're better on the bases they're better at defense but the Mariners have the better roster

04:03what's going to win out that's my question and I really don't know
