Shed and Buried: Classic Cars Season 3 Episode 4
Transcript
00:00...quintessential Brits.
00:02That's nice.
00:03A Lee Francis.
00:04American icons.
00:05Look at the amount of chrome on the front there.
00:08And continental curios.
00:10That is a Lancia Aprilia.
00:13We're going to buy them.
00:14Thank you so much.
00:16Fantastic, Ludo.
00:16Sort them.
00:17It's the sunroof.
00:19No, please, I'm getting out now.
00:20Drive them.
00:22And sell them for a tidy profit.
00:24Are we really the money?
00:27This is Shebberi's Classic Cars.
00:35We're off in search of a classic car in Jelly's favourite county, Berkshire.
00:44We're going to go and see Peter.
00:45What's Peter's thing?
00:47What is a schtick?
00:48I don't think he'd mind me saying this.
00:50But I think he's just a little bit eccentric.
00:53Brilliant.
00:54Well, join the club.
00:55Yeah.
00:55He collects Austin, Cambridge, period British cars.
01:0250s and 60s.
01:03Yeah.
01:03That sounds great.
01:04The sort of thing, if you imagine a town centre car park in about 1969 or 70.
01:11Yeah.
01:12That sort of thing.
01:13Outside the international stores.
01:14Or the Mace.
01:15Mace.
01:16What else was there?
01:17Fine fare.
01:19Fine fare.
01:20Yeah.
01:21Safeways.
01:22Can I tell you something?
01:23Go on.
01:23I used to ride my boat bike up and down the King's Road.
01:26Yeah.
01:27And there was a Safeways.
01:29All the glass down the side of the Safeways was mirrored.
01:33I know what's coming.
01:34I know what's coming.
01:34And one day, I was looking at myself so much, I forgot there was a bollard in the middle
01:39of the road.
01:40Oh, no.
01:41Really?
01:42Seriously?
01:42Did you hit him?
01:42Down on the way, mate.
01:43Oh, no.
01:45Okay, that just shows how ego, yeah.
01:48Yes.
01:49Fantasy.
01:49And vanity is not a good plan.
01:52No, not at all.
01:56Whether Pete will have any mirrors other than rear views and wing mirrors, who knows?
02:01But Berkshire, here we come.
02:03Woof, woof.
02:04So, Pete, look.
02:07Behind me had a couple of my favourite vehicles.
02:09Is that your thing, Land Rovers?
02:11Been in the Army for 25 years doing Land Rovers.
02:13Sibby Street moved away, and now I've gone back to them.
02:17Because, I mean, I've got the green one over there, and we love it, don't we?
02:20Yeah, well, we kind of do, but you keep complaining about your back.
02:24Oh, yeah, no, look.
02:24They're uncomfortable, yeah?
02:26They're too hot in summer.
02:28Yeah.
02:28They're too cold in winter.
02:30They're really noisy.
02:33The short wheelbase over rough ground is horrific.
02:36And we love them.
02:37And we love them.
02:38But what else would you drive?
02:39Yeah, well, exactly.
02:39I'll go over two of them here.
02:40I alternate between these two and the Morris 8.
02:43Right, okay.
02:43Oh, okay.
02:44Excellent stuff.
02:45Hey, Pete, so look, we'll have a little rummage about.
02:47All right.
02:47Yeah.
02:48And then we'll call you in on a few things, I'm sure.
02:50Yeah.
02:50And then at the end, hopefully we'll have a haggle.
02:53Yeah, okay.
02:53Yeah?
02:53Well, thanks, mate.
02:55Well, we might as well just start here.
02:57Yeah.
02:57Yeah.
02:59So Land Rover City, it is.
03:02Starting with a long wheelbase Landy from the early 70s.
03:07Bulkhead looks great, which is cool.
03:08The engine's in there.
03:10And Pete says that he regularly uses it, so that's good.
03:14So what's it like underneath?
03:15Just wait a minute.
03:15Get under there.
03:17Well, so far it looks okay.
03:19Does it?
03:19Do you want me to have a little look at the back end?
03:21Have a quick look.
03:22I have to tell you, the key thing, obviously, Fuzzer, is bulkhead and chassis more than anything.
03:28The rest of it's just bolt on, isn't it?
03:30What's it like?
03:31It's good.
03:32Yeah, it's good.
03:33It's very good.
03:33So look, that is a possible.
03:35And a long wheelbase, yeah, is really something to savour.
03:40Yeah?
03:40It is.
03:41Well, what a good start.
03:42Shall we go and have a look at this Morris 8 over here?
03:44Let's do it.
03:46Pete's Morris 8 is not quite what it seems.
03:50Can you see that?
03:50That's a more modern engine.
03:52It is, yes.
03:53That's an A-series engine.
03:54So, like a Morris Minor engine, shall we say.
03:57Engines like this were cheap, cheerful and ten a penny, you know.
04:01And the other one blew up.
04:03Probably so.
04:03Maybe.
04:04Yeah, somebody just popped this in and away they went.
04:08As for the rest of the car, the interior's a bit crowded.
04:12There's quite a bit of detritus in there.
04:14Well, at the same time, Guy can clear that out, no problem.
04:17But the hood's not bad.
04:19And let's just check this out for the British summertime.
04:23That'll do.
04:24Yeah.
04:24Mate, I'd rather like this.
04:25I mean, obviously, you know, it's just all about price, really.
04:29That's true.
04:29I have to tell you, what a good start.
04:32Let's go in, shall we?
04:33Yeah, I was going to say, head inside.
04:34Let's have a head inside.
04:37Right, come on.
04:38Let's have a look.
04:39Oh, look.
04:39What will I say?
04:40Over in the corner.
04:41Let's see, goodness.
04:46Introduced ten years before the Morris 8,
04:48the Model T Ford was the world's first true mass-production car.
04:53Quick to manufacture, simple to repair,
04:55and crucially for Henry Ford, easy on the pocket.
05:00This is likely to be a Trafford Park-built Model T.
05:05What was that, mate?
05:05The car building was going so well,
05:08Ford opened a factory up near Manchester in the UK,
05:11up at Trafford Park.
05:12I never knew that.
05:13Started popping these out.
05:14I never knew that.
05:16But look, in there, you've got two lovely, lovely bench seats.
05:20I mean, really, they're almost tiny Chesterfields, aren't they, in there?
05:24Mate, I just, I mean, I love them.
05:26Perfectly presented, I would call this.
05:28This is lovely.
05:28This is lovely as it is.
05:30And it comes in Ford's traditional colour.
05:33Yeah.
05:34Black.
05:34Yep.
05:36Moving outside, the main part of Pete's collection is resolutely British.
05:41Look at that.
05:43What's going on there?
05:44It's a car park from the past.
05:47Full of British stuff.
05:48Yeah.
05:48By the look of it.
05:49What is that?
05:50What's going on in there?
05:51Let's have a look.
05:52What's happened to the bodywork on that?
05:55I've no idea.
05:56I don't know if it's been done on purpose.
05:58Should we get it out?
05:59Yeah, let's see how bad it is.
06:00Can we get it out?
06:01Oh, what is it?
06:02You've got the steering.
06:05That'll be the window.
06:06It works.
06:07It's a bit like your wallet is sounding the same.
06:09It is, yeah.
06:09Yeah, yeah.
06:10That's what made me excited.
06:12Yeah.
06:13I haven't got any idea of brakes and we're going downhill.
06:15No, well, I am the brakes.
06:16Yeah, you're well done.
06:17So, don't go too fast.
06:18Okay.
06:18Okay, right.
06:21Our mystery car is an Austin A40 Farina.
06:25A proto hatchback designed by the Italian coachwork specialist Pina Farina.
06:30Almost 350,000 were built, but I doubt if many ended up looking like this.
06:37There you go.
06:37Yeah.
06:39My God.
06:41That's kind of crazy.
06:43Hey, Pete, come on in.
06:45What's that?
06:45Just tell me about this.
06:47It was in a shed for years.
06:49Right.
06:49A damp shed.
06:51Right.
06:51And that's what happens.
06:52No one of a sudden it's been lacquered to keep it like this.
06:54Right, okay.
06:55To preserve the rust, if you like.
06:57It happened by accident.
06:58It wasn't done on purpose.
06:59It happened by accident.
07:00But at the same time, the finish is quite rat rod.
07:03Yeah.
07:04It's lovely, isn't it?
07:04Especially now it's been lacquered.
07:06Hey, look, the interior's immaculate, Pete.
07:09There's no roofs underneath.
07:10It's absolutely solid.
07:11Yeah.
07:12If you were sitting in this car and didn't look too closely at the bonnet, you could be
07:16in a completely restored A40 Farina.
07:19You know.
07:19What's it like under the bonnet?
07:26Ah.
07:28Oh, righty-ho.
07:30Incomplete.
07:30Yeah.
07:31There's no cylinder head.
07:33So, have you got the cylinder head?
07:34I have, yes.
07:35Have you?
07:36Yeah.
07:36It's in the other shed.
07:37So, with a gasket set.
07:38Oh, really?
07:39It's only an A-series engine, but we go together quite easily.
07:41Oh, really?
07:41Yeah, probably so.
07:42Any other problems with it at all?
07:43I think there's some brake parts in there as well.
07:45Oh, right.
07:46Okay.
07:46So, perhaps the braking system needs a bit of a...
07:48Well, it's only an A40.
07:50Yeah, a bit of a tickle.
07:52Rebuild the braking system on this, so long as the pipes are okay.
07:54It's, you know, not too onerous a task.
07:58But, Pete, yeah, no.
07:59Well, that's quite funky.
08:02Pete has obviously got a passion for A40s, because a few tarpaulins back, he's also got
08:08an A40 Devon, the precursor of the Farina.
08:12You had your Devon.
08:13Yeah.
08:13You had your Somerset.
08:14You had your Cambridge.
08:16Counties and towns.
08:17Yeah, that sort of thing, yeah.
08:20How's the Devon?
08:22Okay, so there we have, I think, a slightly later engine.
08:26I think that's a B-series lump.
08:28Maybe 1600 B-series BMC engine.
08:32The interior ain't that peaky, is it?
08:36Oh, that is beautiful.
08:38No, it's a little bit gone.
08:40I love it.
08:41I think that's great, yeah.
08:42Why don't we shut the door and reflect on the other vehicles here?
08:46Okay.
08:46Okay, now, what do you reckon?
08:48First up, that Land Rover Series 3 long wheelbase.
08:51The cream one, I think that's got potential, you know.
08:53It depends how much it's got.
08:54Like all these, yeah.
08:55So, look, the Morris 8 soft top.
08:57I like that.
08:58Nice little boat to knock about in.
09:00Model T.
09:01The Model T, I love it.
09:02Going to be 12 grand or something.
09:04The A40.
09:05The A40?
09:06Rat rod.
09:07Yeah.
09:07No brakes, no cylinder head.
09:10Well, I think those fixes could be easier than we think.
09:14Hey, but I think it's all really relevant to price here today.
09:17Don't you?
09:18I do.
09:18Shall we go and find out?
09:19Yeah.
09:20Go on then.
09:28Sometimes we're focused on one thing, but here I think it's down to price more than anything.
09:33Yeah, I'm going to go in with the Morris 8 Tourer.
09:37How much?
09:387,000.
09:39Okay, so that's your loved everyday car.
09:42Yeah, I do use it.
09:43But I can use something else.
09:44I can use a Land Rover.
09:45Yeah, all right.
09:46Talking of Land Rover.
09:47The cream coloured long wheelbase.
09:50How much would that be?
09:51Six and a half.
09:52Now, moving inside, the Model T might be?
09:56Yeah, it is for sale.
09:57Is it?
09:57How much is that?
09:58Ten.
09:58The rather interestingly complexioned Austin A40 Farriner.
10:06With no cylinder head.
10:07I think that was 18 at 1,800.
10:091,800 quid.
10:10Okay.
10:11Okay.
10:11Okay.
10:12Would you contemplate 1,600 quid for the Austin A40?
10:1817.
10:1917.
10:1917.
10:1917.
10:21We've been down in Berkshire with Pete and his singular collection of Landys and British
10:39cars.
10:40I haven't got any idea of brakes and we're going down here.
10:43No, I am the brakes.
10:44He wants 1,800 for a unique, to put it mildly, Austin A40 Farriner.
10:50But can we get it for less?
10:5317.
10:54Do you think?
10:55There's not much between the two, is there?
10:58Yeah.
10:59Right.
10:59Yeah.
10:59That would be great.
11:00Yeah.
11:00Yeah.
11:01Go on, Pete.
11:01That could be really cool.
11:04And it matches your complexion.
11:07Ooh.
11:08Thanks, Pete.
11:09Next day, back at the shed, we're ready to share the good news.
11:15The reason why I didn't say good morning is I'm a little bit nervous.
11:19It's an unusual purchase.
11:23You're basically saying you've bought a red.
11:25It's not got a lot of go and it's got a little less stop.
11:29Oh, dear.
11:29Sounds bad.
11:29But it's got quite a lot of lust.
11:31It's got all the parts with it, but not necessarily in the right place.
11:35Oh, they're in the boot.
11:36The engine's in the boot.
11:38Right.
11:38Okay.
11:38Yeah.
11:39Rather than prolonging the agony, we'll bring it on.
11:47Oh, no.
11:48Whoa.
11:49Whoa.
11:49I'm going to be...
11:50Oh.
11:51I forgot it had no break.
11:53Well, luckily, you've not damaged anything.
11:55Yeah.
11:55I've got to put it on the paint.
11:58I can live with this pot-marked paint job, but if we're ever going to take it on a road trip,
12:04first, we've got to sort out the mechanicals.
12:07A lot of the vehicle, engine-wise, is in the boot.
12:13Oh, so the brakes are in the boot.
12:14Yes.
12:14Yeah, well, that's why we've just had that little contretemps.
12:17There's a valve there hanging out.
12:19Yeah.
12:19It's new valve, these are.
12:20And look.
12:21Brand new brakes as well.
12:24And drums.
12:24Yeah.
12:25I mean, those, yeah.
12:26Those will be absolutely great once they're actually installed in the car.
12:30Yeah.
12:32Moving up front and under the bullet...
12:34Oh, there you go.
12:35At least the lower part of the engine seems to function.
12:39It does have, not compression, but it does go up and down.
12:42It's not seized.
12:43Someone's put grease on the boards, which is a good thing.
12:45Yes.
12:45What do you reckon, then, lads?
12:47I think you're going to need a pen and paper.
12:49What for?
12:50For a list.
12:51Everything for this is readily available.
12:54Certainly engine-wise, anyway.
12:55Basically, the question is, are you up for the challenge?
13:00Definitely.
13:00Great.
13:01Definitely up for the challenge.
13:03Great, great.
13:04Wait a minute, I actually like this thing because when it is up and running and we're inside it,
13:10we will not be able to see the disgusting exterior.
13:13Yeah.
13:13From inside, we'll feel like we're in a minta.
13:16Can I just make a suggestion?
13:18Yes.
13:18Right, that we actually get all the stuff out, put it on that trestle table, have a cup of tea and do a stock take.
13:25Four cups of Rosie later.
13:27We start on the great work.
13:30While she snoozes, explain to me where we're at.
13:34We have a cylinder head here and we suspect that actually this is new.
13:40It may not work.
13:40It's either new or it's been reconditioned.
13:41Yeah.
13:42So, what do we need?
13:43Come on, full gasket set?
13:44Yes, so full engine gasket set, I guess.
13:47I'd go for a valve spring set because we've only got one missing, but we may as well have them all the same.
13:52Amazing, you've got all the collets and all the clips.
13:54Yes.
13:54And this is going to take hours.
13:57Better make a swift one.
14:01Let them carry on with the list.
14:03We'll have some proper training.
14:04Okay?
14:06Training.
14:08Come here.
14:09My wife says she's trained.
14:11I'm not so sure.
14:12Come here.
14:13That's good.
14:15Now sit.
14:17Sit.
14:19Blimey, that's not bad, you know.
14:21Next stop.
14:22Crufts.
14:23Back at the shed.
14:24The stock has finally been taken.
14:27How's the list?
14:28Is it expensive?
14:29I don't think it'll be that expensive because I think these parts are quite cheap, aren't they?
14:33It's extensive, but hopefully not expensive.
14:37I like your style, mate.
14:39All right, great.
14:40So what's the first major job that you have to do?
14:43Clean everything up, really.
14:45I mean, Al's already started.
14:46Well, you carry on cleaning because I know you're itching too, Al.
14:49Within ten minutes, virtually every brush in the workshop is being gainfully employed in a mega-clean-a-thon.
15:01The two biggest components are the block.
15:04I'm going to remove these three studs so that we can clean up the top of the cylinder block.
15:11We need to make sure that we've got a nice, clean surface to work to.
15:16And the cylinder head.
15:20I'm starting to clean off the rust, but it's not actually rust, it's grease, protective grease.
15:24Underneath the protective grease is like a ground surface.
15:27This could be a really good cylinder head.
15:31The A-Series engine featured in many British cars from the 1960s until the 1990s.
15:38Fitted in everything from the Mini to the Morris Minor to the MG Midget, as well as several other Austin models.
15:45Cheap to produce, it was reliable and easy to work on.
15:49Do you know what, first, one of my earliest memories of the A-Series engine.
15:52Yeah.
15:53I was about 14, and my dad took the engine out of his Mini.
15:55Yeah.
15:55Stricted it all down and left it in the cellar in our house.
15:58And he said, if you can put it back together, you can have it.
15:59Wow.
16:00So I put it all back together, started it on the battery, and it ran great.
16:02There's a big part of bits left over.
16:05It ran great.
16:07Yeah.
16:07These sort of jobs were always given to the apprentice, weren't they?
16:13They were.
16:14Yeah.
16:14Let's face it, we're all apprentices forever.
16:20In truth, we've been lucky with most of our recent restorations,
16:24and haven't had to do such a comprehensive rebuild as this.
16:27But it's great to see everyone getting down to it,
16:30giving me the opportunity to do some strategic thinking.
16:37Fuzz and Alan have moved on to the rest of the car.
16:41The clutch is seized, so Fuzz gives the slave cylinder a few gentle taps,
16:46and then Alan tests the pedal.
16:48Yeah, it's working.
16:49Yeah.
16:49Brilliant.
16:50That's working.
16:51Fantastic.
16:52We've got, hopefully, a working clutch.
16:54We're one step further ahead.
16:56Fabulous.
16:56And the other thing is,
16:58we've got a full set of brake shoes and springs and everything.
17:02So, perhaps, we might not have too much missing at all.
17:07That's good, isn't it?
17:08To check the other wheels,
17:10Fuzz digs out one of the A40's original accessories.
17:14This car looks in such good condition,
17:17I am actually going to use the jacking point and the original jack.
17:23I'm going to lift up both wheels at the same time,
17:26so that I can take the rear wheels off as well as the front.
17:29And just see if that works.
17:31I'm going to be totally shocked.
17:34Oh, ye of little faith.
17:37Fuzz extends the jack,
17:38attaches the handle,
17:39and up she goes.
17:43I'm totally shocked.
17:45Well, well.
17:46I'll go back to my cleaning.
17:48OK.
17:48Cheers, Al.
17:50Though all the wheels do have brake shoes,
17:52they're not set up correctly.
17:55I'm going to just adjust these off a little.
17:58One, two.
18:00One, two.
18:02Let's see if this will now go on.
18:11Not quite.
18:13It's still protruding a little bit.
18:16It takes a bit more fettling.
18:17One, two.
18:18But finally...
18:20One, two.
18:22Right.
18:23OK.
18:23Let's see.
18:27OK.
18:27Great.
18:29That's gone all the way home.
18:31And there we are.
18:32And then this
18:33is a little access hole
18:35to reach the adjusters.
18:39Alan, meanwhile,
18:40has been working on the carburettor.
18:43Several systems on this were seized.
18:44Sorry, this is the choke enrichment device.
18:46That was seized.
18:47This was seized.
18:48That was seized.
18:49Now it's all free.
18:49So I'm really pleased.
18:52So nice to work on something proper
18:53for a change.
18:54Oi!
18:56Contestants!
18:57You have one hour left
18:59to finish this vehicle.
19:11Here you go, Al.
19:15OK, so it's not really
19:17ready, steady car.
19:18But with the clock ticking,
19:20even I get caught up
19:21in the excitement.
19:23This is Alan's technique
19:24of constantly spraying,
19:26which I have to say,
19:28in some situations
19:29works incredibly well.
19:30Check this all out.
19:32All the parts all cleaned up and shiny.
19:34All the valves are polished.
19:37Thill in the head.
19:37Rockers.
19:38Cleaner pipes.
19:39All the collets.
19:40Everything's all done.
19:41Nothing's been lost
19:41in the cleaning process,
19:42which is a good thing.
19:43A really cool car to work on.
19:44Nice and simple.
19:46Everything's easy to do.
19:46Nothing seems solid.
19:48Everything's perfect.
19:49It's been a really good day.
19:51Can't think of the last
19:52and I have a happier day
19:53than today.
19:54That's the joy of shed life.
19:57Things are happening.
19:57We're saving another one.
19:59We started the morning
20:00with a prang
20:01and have finished the afternoon
20:03with a smile.
20:06It's that happy.
20:08Our car, though,
20:09is still in bits.
20:10There's plenty missing
20:11and masses to reassemble.
20:13If we're ever going to get
20:15our A40 back on the road,
20:17there's a lot more to do.
20:18Last week,
20:33we spent days
20:34cleaning,
20:35investigating
20:36and trying to work out
20:37what was missing
20:38from our A40.
20:39All the parts all cleaned up
20:40and shiny.
20:41All the flowers are polished.
20:42Seven days later,
20:44it's time to begin
20:45the reassembly.
20:46The good news is,
20:49oh, look what's arrived.
20:51Lots of new things.
20:52The bad news is,
20:54not all of it's arrived.
20:56But at the same time,
20:57Alan's having fun
20:58with the dynamo.
21:01Before he can fit
21:02a new dynamo,
21:04Alan has to salvage
21:05the pulley from the old one.
21:07If we damage any parts
21:08on here,
21:09it doesn't really matter
21:10because it's beyond repair.
21:11The car's been stored
21:12in the garage
21:13in damp conditions.
21:14It's rusted.
21:15Everything's solid.
21:16The nut that holds
21:17the pulley in place
21:18is particularly
21:19tough to crack.
21:22It takes elbow grease,
21:25penetrating oil
21:26and a bit of flambéing
21:31until...
21:33Oh!
21:34There we go.
21:35That's sheared off then.
21:36Yeah.
21:37Yeah.
21:37Ah!
21:38Bath!
21:39Colour!
21:39There we go.
21:40There you go, Alan.
21:41The pulley's coming off.
21:43Yes, there we go.
21:44Oh, Alan.
21:45There we go.
21:47That's a bit.
21:47Oh, genius, Alan.
21:48Yeah.
21:48That's a bit apart from the nut.
21:49We saved it all.
21:50Did it not come with the nut?
21:51It did.
21:52No worries, then.
21:53We've got any nut.
21:54We're laughing.
21:55Yeah.
21:55How's the burn?
21:57How's the burn?
22:01Replacing the wipers
22:03is a different sort of challenge.
22:05The spares don't fit,
22:06so Fuzz tries to grind them down to size.
22:09A little bit too thick,
22:11a little bit too wide.
22:13Rather like me.
22:15I didn't say that.
22:16No, but I can tell in your eyes...
22:18I can tell in your eyes.
22:22That's exactly what you meant.
22:26I join in.
22:28It's all going remarkably well.
22:30But my enthusiasm gets the better of me.
22:34I've rubbed the knob off.
22:35Yeah, I can see that.
22:36You're not supposed to do that.
22:37I know.
22:40You go and make the tea.
22:42I'll finish this off for you, shall I?
22:46From sorcerer's apprentice
22:48to tea boy.
22:50I'm seeking solace in a biscuit
22:52and a cup of tea.
22:57The only way to redeem myself
22:59is to help Alan with the cylinder block.
23:02Which way should this go?
23:03That way?
23:04Yeah.
23:04First, we fit a new thermostat.
23:06Oh, seated nicely.
23:09So there you are.
23:09That is our first sub-assembly.
23:13Then we move on
23:15to the dark art of valve fitting.
23:17All we've got to do is clean up the surface.
23:19It's nice and smooth and flat.
23:20Matches the valve exactly
23:21to give a gas-tight seal.
23:23Armed with a tin of abrasive paste
23:25and a special tool
23:27called a suction valve grinder,
23:29we lap the valves into a perfect fit.
23:32It's quite good now you're getting trained up.
23:33I can sit down and relax
23:34while you do the work.
23:35Well, I wouldn't say that, mate.
23:36You go horribly wrong.
23:38Once all eight valves are done,
23:40there's plenty more parts to fit.
23:42But after another good day in the office,
23:44we'll save that pleasure for tomorrow.
23:46Next day, the jelly bean and the jelly tot
24:01have come for a look-see.
24:03Having a puppy.
24:04Now my kids are fully grown.
24:06It's like having another baby.
24:08But Alan's focused on stage two
24:11of the engine rebuild.
24:13Okay, valve in.
24:15Number four.
24:16Yeah.
24:16Number four.
24:17Okay.
24:20You've got one of those on there.
24:22Oh, right.
24:22One of those on there.
24:23Oh, right.
24:24One of those on there.
24:26And we have to compress it
24:27with a valve spring compressor.
24:28Have we got a valve spring compressor?
24:30I've bought an old one.
24:31Oh, that'll do.
24:32This is 1950s.
24:33Oh, yeah, mate.
24:34But that's quality, mate.
24:37The back end of each valve
24:39is a complicated assembly
24:40of springs, clips, seals and collets.
24:44I continue my apprenticeship.
24:46So far, so good.
24:48Yeah, so far, so good.
24:50And Alan does what he does best,
24:53systematically putting it all together.
24:55An hour later,
24:56all eight valves are fitted
24:58and we're ready to put the cylinder head
25:00back onto the engine.
25:02First, he installs a gasket
25:04and then the head itself.
25:06Yeah, okay, got it.
25:07Are you going to be all right with that?
25:08I think so.
25:13So the head is on.
25:14Yeah.
25:15Alan, this is great.
25:17Now we can put on the rocker.
25:20As the assembly continues,
25:22Alan drops in the pushrods
25:23and the rocker arms.
25:26And I get down and dirty,
25:28cleaning off an old gasket
25:29from one of the engine covers.
25:32Am I getting dirty
25:33so you don't have to?
25:35Technically, I'm assembling the engine
25:36which should be done
25:37in a clean environment.
25:38If I get a dirty T-shirt,
25:40what do I do?
25:40Bill, you?
25:41Yeah, prove you've done some work.
25:43When we bought this car,
25:45I didn't understand
25:46how intimate I was going to have to get
25:48with an A-Series engine.
25:50But with the carb going on
25:52and then the spark plugs,
25:54it really is starting to come together.
25:56And even better,
25:57it's inspired me to form a plan.
26:00We're going to get the tweed jackets on
26:02in this because it's very bucolic.
26:05It's very much sort of period BBC drama.
26:09So I thought what would be nice
26:10that we should go to a country show.
26:12That sounds nice.
26:13Yeah?
26:13With sheep shearing and things like that.
26:15Yeah, sheep shearing,
26:16tractors for sale,
26:18have an ice cream,
26:19just all in all,
26:20take in the Morton in Marsh
26:22country show.
26:23That's what we're going to do.
26:24And it's a few days away,
26:26so we've got time
26:27to test this out before we go.
26:31There's just one more thing
26:33to put on the engine.
26:34Unfortunately, next morning,
26:36it turns up.
26:37So, Al, look,
26:41I've been absent
26:42while you've been rebuilding this engine.
26:44Apparently, you had a hand from Henry,
26:45is that right?
26:46He was really good.
26:47He's got his T-shirt dirty
26:48and his trousers.
26:49Oh, oh my God.
26:50Well, I've got some widgets here for you.
26:52Well, the new rocker covers arrived.
26:54Oh, that's what you were waiting for, is it?
26:55Let's just hope it fits.
26:56It's quite a tight fit, getting them on.
26:58Very good.
26:58There it is, that's it.
27:00There we go, that fits lovely.
27:01Right, rubbers first.
27:02Right.
27:04And the chrome washers.
27:05Looking really good, isn't it?
27:10While Al's putting on the finishing touches,
27:12I've got an errand to run.
27:16We need to get
27:18a little piece of chrome trim
27:21for the bodywork
27:22just in front of the door.
27:24Yeah.
27:26So I'm off to Maidenhead
27:28to meet someone
27:29who I hope will have the spares.
27:32Say hello to Derek and his friends.
27:35At the A40 Farina Club.
27:37Hello, I'm Henry.
27:38Hi, I'm Martin.
27:39Hello, Martin.
27:40I'm Peter.
27:41Peter.
27:41Hi, I'm Anna.
27:42Anna, lovely to see you.
27:43I'm Henry.
27:44Now, look, I thought I was just going to pick up
27:45a little bit of Ali.
27:46Oh, it's never that straightforward, isn't it?
27:48But look, look at these.
27:50Now, tell me,
27:51what is it about the Austin A40?
27:53They were a family car.
27:54Every time I take her out,
27:55there's people going,
27:56I passed my driving test in there.
27:57It's like, do you want to sit inside it?
27:59Can I?
28:00Yeah, of course you can.
28:01And they got smiles from ear to ear.
28:03I think it's just the lines,
28:05the Penny and Farina design.
28:06I think it was innovative at the time.
28:08And it was very, very different
28:10from all the previous UK-made cars.
28:12The club has 420 members worldwide
28:16devoted to this iconic car.
28:19Now, Peter, we've got a Mark II,
28:21but I'll tell you what,
28:22it looks nothing like that.
28:24Well, it's been a labour of love.
28:26I've had it since 1983.
28:28It sat in a garage for 30-odd years.
28:31And then just before lockdown,
28:32I started working on it.
28:34Oh, right.
28:34So lockdown was beneficial in some ways.
28:36Oh, it's marvellous.
28:37People like Peter in there, beavering away.
28:39I thought we took about £60,000 in spare parts that year.
28:44But talk about spares.
28:47Have you got any parts?
28:49I've been on them.
28:50Have you got any?
28:50Run out.
28:51Have you got any parts?
28:52OK, look, I've just seen them in the garage.
28:55Come on.
28:55Come on.
28:58Derek's garage is an Aladdin's cave
29:00with everything from brakes to bumpers to bearings.
29:04And luckily for me, plenty of trim.
29:07Now those look right.
29:11So these obviously have come off other A40s.
29:15Yes, that's right.
29:15Yeah?
29:15And people have collected them
29:17and then donated them to us, usually.
29:19I've driven all over the country.
29:20Sometimes I've hired a van,
29:21sometimes I've taken my own car.
29:22Right, OK.
29:23And the wives are always pleased to see me
29:25come to collect all this junk.
29:26Well, I'm sure they are.
29:27My wife would love to see you.
29:29I have to tell you.
29:31But before she gets on the blower,
29:34time for me to get back to the shed.
29:36Fuzz has arrived and the engine looks complete.
29:41It's all together.
29:42That's it.
29:42We're ready for our first start.
29:44Hopefully it's going to go.
29:45Yeah.
29:45I mean, that is genuine teamwork.
29:46I mean, obviously I've rebuilt most of it.
29:49Does it work?
29:50I don't know.
29:51You haven't tried it yet.
29:51We haven't tried it.
29:52Come on, Al.
29:53I've primed it all up with easy starts.
29:54It might just work straight away.
29:55All right, go on, Al.
29:57Oh, this is really exciting.
29:59Do you honestly think it'll just work?
30:01I do, yeah.
30:01I think it will.
30:02Yeah.
30:02You?
30:03Yeah.
30:04Go on, then.
30:05Give it a go.
30:07Don't work.
30:08Nearly.
30:09Yeah.
30:10There we go, Al.
30:11Yes.
30:13Perfect.
30:13There we go.
30:14Look at that.
30:15That's that's rather nice.
30:18Gosh, like a Swiss watch.
30:21And it takes over nicely as well.
30:23Yeah.
30:23Shall we see if it goes?
30:25Let's take it out of the drive.
30:25Let's do it.
30:26Come on, here.
30:26Come on, who's driving?
30:27You.
30:28Buzz?
30:28Me?
30:29I don't know.
30:29All right.
30:30I'll go in the back, Al.
30:31Go on, then.
30:36Oh, that's smooth.
30:38Yeah.
30:39Well, it is, isn't it?
30:39Don't sound so surprised.
30:41You built the engine.
30:42Oh, yeah.
30:43No, I did.
30:43Yeah.
30:44Of course I did.
30:44Just before you do anything, try the brakes.
30:51Not too hard.
30:53And it stops as well.
30:56They went really good.
30:56Yeah.
30:57Yeah.
30:57Really good.
30:57I have to admit, there were moments when I thought I'd made a big mistake, but look at
31:06it go.
31:07People, we're in third gear.
31:09Well done.
31:10I mean, it drives.
31:12It drives really well, isn't it?
31:13It seems rather lovely.
31:16Long live the A-Series engine.
31:19But is the gearbox just as reliable?
31:22Well, I'll just turn around here.
31:24You know where reverse gear is?
31:26I reckon it could be here.
31:29Is it up or down?
31:31Oh, he's found it.
31:33Well done.
31:33I've never had it.
31:35I never doubted him, you know.
31:36I didn't doubt it.
31:37Everything on this car is first time.
31:41So we've passed the reverse test, the start-up test, and the brake test.
31:47Well, I think this has been a massive success, this test drive.
31:50Yeah.
31:50But I think it's going to get us to Morton Marsh, to the country show.
31:53No problem.
31:54Easily.
31:55I think so, too.
31:56Now, what could possibly go wrong?
31:59Everything.
32:03That'll be the window.
32:15A month ago, we found an ugly duckling in a shed in Berkshire.
32:19My God, that's kind of crazy.
32:22We stripped it.
32:24It's extensive, but hopefully not expensive.
32:28Sorted the brakes.
32:29One, two.
32:31One, two.
32:33And rebuild the engine.
32:35So the head is on.
32:37This is crazy.
32:39And now, with the addition of that piece of trim from the owners' club.
32:42Go on.
32:43Glue it.
32:44Is it the right link?
32:45First of all.
32:46Looks like it.
32:47Yep.
32:48So, let's get one on.
32:50Oh, there we go.
32:51That's clipped on nicely.
32:54RA40 is finally ready to go to the ball.
32:57Or, to be more precise, the annual Morton in Marsh country show.
33:02Okay, look.
33:03The sun is shining on the righteous, as always.
33:05We don't have any tweed.
33:07But what we do have is motivation.
33:09Yes.
33:09Motivation to go to one of the greatest country shows in England.
33:13I'm very confident, as well, this is going to make it.
33:15I know that's the famous last words.
33:17And I never do a cup half full.
33:19But there we go.
33:20I think it'll make it.
33:21Yeah.
33:21Same here.
33:21Yeah.
33:22And away we go.
33:28So, yeah, I used to go to country shows with the old man.
33:31Yeah.
33:31When I was younger, up in Norfolk.
33:33What was your favourite part of a country show?
33:35What did you like the most?
33:37Guinea pigs.
33:37Guinea pigs?
33:39Cavies.
33:40Have I told you?
33:41Yes.
33:42Have I told you?
33:43Yes, you have.
33:43That the cavies were my life.
33:48Today, we're the guinea pigs.
33:50Testing a car that was in pieces just a few weeks ago.
33:54But now is heading out on a 50-mile round trip.
33:58I have to say, though, the A40 feels great.
34:01Although I can't vouch for the driver.
34:04Oh, beautiful.
34:06Blimey, you nearly had us in ahead.
34:08Yeah, we nearly had us in ahead.
34:10Let's get there, shall we?
34:11Yeah.
34:11I must say, it's going really well.
34:14It's rather lovely, this car.
34:16Do you know what?
34:16It's not wrackly.
34:18You're absolutely right.
34:19It's all right, isn't it?
34:24I've just realised that it hasn't got any wing mirrors.
34:27You've got a rear view one.
34:28Yeah, yeah.
34:29You can hang on me while you're driving.
34:30I've got this all-round view.
34:32Look, 360.
34:34Often, cars didn't have wing mirrors.
34:36Option extra.
34:38Yeah.
34:38Can I just say, though, driving it, looking across the bonnet.
34:41Yeah.
34:41Looks like you're driving a toad.
34:48Whether our toad will turn out to be a prince, we'll find out later when Chopper Roy comes a-calling.
34:54But all is good as we reach Morton.
34:57Next stop, the annual show.
34:59It's been running since 1949, a one-day extravaganza with traditional crafts and parades at Go-Go.
35:13Please stay aware while these tractors are moving around the show back.
35:18They're not like a morning car.
35:23This is great.
35:24All we've got to do is find ourselves a little nice place to park.
35:27Yeah, there's a lot of people walking around here.
35:30Yeah.
35:30I mean...
35:31Are we in the right way?
35:32Yeah, Chopper.
35:33It says this way.
35:34It doesn't say park, you know, does it?
35:36Oh, it's here.
35:37I mean, there's a nice space, though.
35:39Oh, mate, there's plenty of room in here.
35:40Oh, this is the first one in here.
35:42Look at that.
35:43Look at this.
35:43We're off and away.
35:45What on earth is going on here?
35:47Come on, there's a boy with a microphone.
35:49People driving about round the ring, completely lost.
35:53There we go, that's great.
35:55You can't park there, sir.
35:58I think this is a device so they don't have to pay to get in this lot.
36:03Are we in the wrong place?
36:04I think you might be.
36:05Are you sure?
36:06Is that what they call patina?
36:09No.
36:09In the antiques trade.
36:11It's a bit of a wreck, I have to tell you.
36:14But the car itself is nice.
36:16Fuzz just looks like that every day.
36:17Oi.
36:19No, I've got to tell you, right, this is an A40 that we have restored from the inside out.
36:26We haven't quite got to the out yet.
36:28I think we're probably in the wrong place, right?
36:31I think that was sort of the conclusion we came to, yes.
36:35OK, well, we'd better go and find ourselves somewhere to park properly.
36:39Right, what's happening next?
36:41After that inauspicious entrance, the Morton Show is as good as I'd hoped.
36:47There are traditional attractions, like the petting tent.
36:50Can I just draw your attention to my favourite things here, which are the guinea pigs?
36:57Also, can I draw your attention to those strangely coloured sheepage?
37:01Oh, yeah.
37:02I prefer the dude at the end.
37:03He is a dude, man.
37:04He looks a bit like you, actually, Skid.
37:06Well, I do have an affinity with him from here.
37:08Yeah, can you buy these things?
37:09I might buy Alan a goat.
37:13And elsewhere, some less traditional country pursuits, as well as a modern-day version of
37:19the Maypole.
37:20Or not quite.
37:21That's it.
37:23Now, this knee to the pole.
37:25And hold.
37:26Yeah.
37:26And then as you put yourself around, squeeze your legs together.
37:31Yeah!
37:32Having made an entrance in the A40, which I'm glad to say is getting a lot of attention,
37:48we've been roped into an event, celebrating the 65th anniversary of the Series 2 Land Rover.
37:55We're going to find out from you, Ruby, right, what we've actually got to do.
38:01You've got to judge the Land Rovers, the one you like most, the one you would like to
38:06take home the most.
38:07Okay, so it's just the one prize?
38:09Just the one prize.
38:11Okay, which is there.
38:12That's a very fancy rosette.
38:14That is, yeah.
38:15Yeah?
38:16It's the first time he's ever had a rosette.
38:18Are you?
38:18No, I won a guinea pig of rosettes years ago.
38:21We are now going to judge, and then we will come and tell you when we're ready to present
38:27the prize.
38:28There are dozens of entries, from long wheelbases to short wheelbases, hard tops and soft tops.
38:37This is mint.
38:39Yeah, that's nice.
38:39Okay, so we've got ourselves a Series 2 here, in that beautiful Land Rover grey.
38:45It's got a winch, yeah.
38:47It's beautiful.
38:47Yeah.
38:48And it's got the best of both worlds, it's got a hard top, hasn't it?
38:51But at the same time, it's got your canvas back there.
38:53It's a truck cab, isn't it?
38:54Truck cab, yeah.
38:55Have a look inside the canvas, it's lovely.
38:57Is it beautiful?
38:58Yeah.
38:58Yeah.
38:58Let's have a quick look.
38:59There's lots of pouches.
39:00Oh, is there?
39:01Yeah.
39:02Oh, look at that.
39:02It's perfect.
39:03Yeah, that's great.
39:04That's really lovely.
39:06Now, Andrew.
39:07Is that yours?
39:08Yes.
39:09It is lovely.
39:10Nice, isn't it?
39:11Isn't that a lovely thing?
39:12How long have you had that?
39:1441 years.
39:15Oh, my Lord, really?
39:17Amazing.
39:18Yeah.
39:18The back of it's lovely as well, all the pouches, it's just beautifully detailed.
39:25Phil's pick-up style Landy is very different.
39:28It has a high-spec interior and an unusual roof.
39:33Is that called a bikini top?
39:35Bikini.
39:35Yeah.
39:36And continuing the holiday theme, all your camping essentials.
39:40But that, I think, is for cooking, isn't it?
39:42It is, yes.
39:43But it matches the Landy.
39:45Yeah, no, it's lovely, mate, the way it does that.
39:47Yeah, what's 71?
39:48To you?
39:48Yeah.
39:49Of it.
39:49Yeah, I'm a 71 model as well.
39:52You youngster.
39:53Which one's looking better?
39:56That.
39:58I didn't mean that.
40:00And that's the beauty of a Series 2 Landy.
40:03You can either put your stamp on it or keep it trad.
40:07Tell me why, right, you have a love of Land Rovers.
40:13Well, for me, when I was a kid, I used to do Meccano.
40:15Right.
40:16That is the ultimate Meccano.
40:18It is, isn't it?
40:18Did you do Meccano as well, James?
40:20I did, actually, yeah.
40:21Yeah, there you go, mate.
40:22He looks as though he did Meccano as well, doesn't he?
40:23It pushed on to me by him.
40:24Yeah, yeah, that's fantastic.
40:25I think it's kind of one of those things that you rebuild it because you can.
40:30Right.
40:30It's easy to get the spares.
40:31Yeah.
40:32As you can see, no two Land Rovers are the same.
40:35Absolutely.
40:35So you can make it your own.
40:36Yeah, that's the best bit.
40:39The only thing we're not enjoying is having to choose a single winner.
40:43So after catching a few extra prizes from Ruby, we're going to award three.
40:48In third place, Phil's bikini clad, accessorised up, Landy Pickup.
40:54Well, congratulations.
40:55There you go.
40:56Now, look, we found that.
40:58I don't quite know what it is.
41:00It's a door hinge, but it doesn't work.
41:02In second place, Adrian's mid-60s long wheelbase model with a perfectly patinaed interior.
41:09There you go.
41:09Well done.
41:09There's your mug.
41:10Tell me about that one because that's beautiful.
41:12We haven't seen each other.
41:13It was spec'd by a very rich man years and years ago at the factory.
41:18And the factory did all the work.
41:19All the stuff in it.
41:21That's original.
41:22All the cladding, everything.
41:23That's a fantastic vehicle.
41:25But the top prize.
41:27The winner of the Land Rover Rosette, Rosette, furnish me.
41:34Right, the winner is that one over there has won.
41:40Here, let me give you that.
41:42Now, the reason why Andy's got it is the pouches in the back.
41:46Thank you so very much.
41:47We have had a great day.
41:49It's thanks to you lot that our heritage is preserved.
41:54And when it comes to heritage, there's the small matter of our 1964 A40 Farina.
42:01It has now proved its mettle, but what's it going to be worth?
42:05Next day, we find out when our favourite dealer, Chopper Roy, pays us a visit.
42:09Oh, yeah.
42:14Deja vu.
42:16Deja.
42:16Here we are again.
42:17All right, all shorts.
42:18Hey, what do you reckon on the bodywork, first of all?
42:21Um, it's quite patina.
42:24Isn't it?
42:25But unbelievably solid.
42:26Okay, look, here's the SP with it.
42:28We've given it a new head, right?
42:31Yeah.
42:31Okay, the interior's mini-lite wheels.
42:34They're genuine mini-lites as well.
42:36And Fuzz tells me people might race this.
42:40You can tune the hell out of this.
42:41Yeah, you can.
42:42Honestly, these are a very tunable little saloon kind.
42:45Okay, well, look, what do you reckon, mate?
42:47Quick sale, small profit, quick return, or not?
42:50Quick sale, two and a half.
42:52If you get the historic racer bloke on it, you're going to get more for it.
42:57Hang on a second.
42:58So we pay 1,700 quid for it.
43:00Yeah.
43:01And let's call it 300 quids worth of parts, probably.
43:03Yeah.
43:04We could earn ourselves a monkey.
43:06Yeah.
43:06500 quid.
43:07It's not bad at all.
43:08What are we going to spend our monkey on?
43:10Nuts.
43:11Yeah, peanuts.
