02:26Across Derbyshire, there has been a recent rise in crashes involving the under-25s.
02:32There's definitely an increase in young drivers having road traffic collisions.
02:36They take these risks because they feel invincible.
02:39They think that nothing's going to happen.
02:41Unfortunately, it leaves them wide open to making a serious and fatal mistake.

10:58I completely understand where their frustrations lie, but it's not for me to give them all
11:02the answers at that stage.
11:05Due to the driver's disappearance and some of the casualties sustaining serious injuries,
11:10the scene will remain in lockdown for some time, while the crash investigation concludes.
11:15Ultimately, the person to blame was the driver that's decided he ain't going to stop for
11:21the police.
11:23It made no difference whether I was behind him or not, that he continued to drive in that
11:27dangerous manner.

12:22Near Chesterfield, PC Mac Cooling is responding to a serious crash involving an 18-year-old
12:28driver.
12:30So we're just en route now to a road traffic collision up there.
12:33It's a report of a vehicle that's hit a tree.
12:36It's on its side.
12:38There are 95 deaths or serious injuries every week involving a young driver on UK roads.
12:44There's definitely an upward trend of young drivers having road traffic collisions.
12:50The vehicles coming to contact with a tree.
12:53When you're in collision with these sorts of things, there is no give, there's no bounce.
12:56It's a hell of an impact.
12:57It sounds quite a nasty collision, this.
13:01There are possibly multiple casualties inside.
13:04The first priority is going to be the welfare of the people that are there.

13:11I'm not a million miles behind you, mate.
13:19It sounds pretty serious, so it could be serious or fatal, I reckon, this.
13:23I've seen some horrendous things, and I've seen lots of things with young drivers as victims.
13:36When I attend these serious collisions, I often stand there thinking it's just a complete waste
13:42of a life.
13:43As Matt arrives, fire crews and traffic cop Stuart Smith are already on scene.
13:54He's gone in, wedged himself.
13:57He's pinned by his head.
14:00He's not got injury to his leg at all to do with his head.
14:02Just single-locked in there.

14:06The young casualty needs urgent medical care, but his head is trapped in the wreckage.
14:11I just feel good in what I've seen in time.
14:14He's just rising, but not conscious.
14:18From three to six, it is believed just to be one single occupant, which is the driver.
14:23We've got no medical assessment yet, but still trying to get him out of the car.
14:26My role when I initially turn up to a serious collision is to preserve the scene, keep all
14:32the other emergency services safe, and ultimately the public, you know, as best we can out of
14:36the area.
14:37The entire family that just turned up.
14:39If they end up having to see if they are, they're going to be dying across here.

14:44We do get families that do attend the scene of these collisions.
14:47Of course, the first thing they want to do is get to their loved one.
14:50We have to then balance their needs and the job that we have to do.
14:54So I'll try to get them good out of there.

14:58I know, it's the mum and dad in to it.
15:0020 minutes after the crash, the driver's finally freed.
15:07My understanding at the minute is he's unconscious, so we're still pending an update on how serious
15:11injuries are, but it isn't looking particularly good at the minute.
15:13He's been noticed once, that's all, since the first paramedic on scene is here.
15:21Prognosis-wise, he's clearly life-threatening.

15:24We are breathing for all of them, so...

15:28So he's not breathing himself, though?

15:29So at the minute, we're just waiting for the air ambulance doctor to attend to see
15:33so he can stabilise him, so they can get him off to hospital.
15:39The critical care doctor said he's basically, they've had to put him in a coma.
15:43Because they might end up with, like, swelling.
15:46Like, brain injuries.
15:47Yeah.
15:49The medical teams are basically breathing for him.
15:54I think his life, you know, it is in the balance.
15:57We're not going to know much more until ultimately he's at hospital and he's had a scan.
16:03With the young driver on his way to hospital.
16:06Right, I'll just, I'll start the RTC side of things then.
16:11Matt and the team begin piecing together how and why the crash occurred.
16:16First thing that's noticeable is the significant intrusion from the roof and the B pillar
16:21into where the driver would be sat.
16:24And I would suspect that that's then hit the driver's head and neck area.
16:28And that's probably what's resulted in the head injury.
16:30I do often come away thinking it's just a waste of a young life.
16:35I've got a teenage son now that isn't going to be far off driving in a few years.
16:40And it really does make me sit and think in my own family.
16:44With a witness alleging speed may be the cause of the crash.
16:54I've not seen anything obvious it myself.
16:56But obviously your trained eye is far better than mine.
16:59Matt updates the forensic crash investigator.
17:02So that's why I had contact with the tree.
17:06So it's probably hit higher up and come back down there.

17:10It's a relatively mild bend.
17:13Speed limit for this section of road is 40 miles an hour.
17:16It begs the question as to how the driver's lost control on the road.
17:22But it's still kicked up here.
17:23What we think's happened is the near side front wheel has started to mount and hit the verge here.
17:36We think the vehicle's began to turn at which point then it's collided with the tree.
17:42Where it's then come to its final resting point.
17:47While officers continue gathering evidence, there's an update.
17:53The suggestion is that he may have had a drink.
17:57We'll look at getting a blood sample from him.
18:00That will potentially then be sent off for analysis later.
18:03With the crash scene investigation winding down,
18:07the young driver is undergoing treatment in hospital for a suspected life-changing brain injury.
18:13Even though someone's seriously injured in a collision,
18:16you have to gather all that evidence that if they've done something ultimately illegal,
18:20they need to understand that there is a consequence for their actions
18:24and that's why we do the work that we do.

19:11The traffic officer, you've seen an increased trend in young drivers
19:14being involved in more and more collisions.
19:17We're finding that the younger generation are now able to get more powerful cars,
19:22which obviously creates its own danger.
