Tamil Nadu's Governor said that atrocities against the Dalit community are higher in Tamil Nadu than in the neighboring state of Kerala, despite the state's high literacy rate. The Governor said he was pained to read frequent reports of Dalits being assaulted and killed, stating, "The Dalits are our brothers and sisters. We cannot discriminate them socially." He further claimed that the Dalit movement in the state has been "hijacked by political movements," an indirect criticism of Dravidian parties. The report references a recent incident where children from the Dalit community were barred from a street. These remarks are expected to intensify the ongoing friction between the Governor's office and the DMK-led state government.

00:00And now, breaking news from Tamil Nadu, comparing Tamil Nadu with its neighboring state Kerala.
00:11The Tamil Nadu governor said the Dalit atrocities are higher in Tamil Nadu despite high literacy rate.
00:18Now, Governor Ravi said that he was pained to read frequent reports of members of the Dalit community
00:25being assaulted and even killed simply because of their caste identity.
00:31Let's listen to what he said.
00:35I read the story of some of our brothers and sisters being beaten up, assaulted and at times killed
00:50because they belong to certain community.
00:57They belong to community whom some people consider untouchable.
01:06This I have been raising from every platform.
01:11And I have made it clear I will continue raising it all the time.
01:14Because this is unacceptable.
01:19The Dalits are our brothers and sisters.
01:23We cannot discriminate them socially.
01:29And joining us live now is India Today's Pramod Madhav.
01:32Pramod, once again, I guess we will see the governor and the government at loggerheads
01:38because the governor says that the Dalit movement has been hijacked by political parties in Tamil Nadu.
01:45Actually, these are like really strong allegations by the governor
01:48where he actually compares the state of Kerala with the state of Tamil Nadu.
01:52Unfortunately, recently what happened is that like there was an instance where
01:55a group of children from Dalit community were not allowed to pass through a street
01:59that was kind of encroached by a caste Hindu group.
02:03So he is kind of mentioning that and the previous cases and he claims
02:06in the state of Tamil Nadu it has become completely frequent
02:08even after having high gross education rate.
02:13And this is where he claims that while saints and others were in Kerala
02:17in the state of Tamil Nadu, it was hijacked by political movements.
02:22Indirectly, he is blaming the Dravidian parties
02:24and definitely DMK is not going to take this lightly.
02:27Right. Thank you, Pramod, for all those details.
02:30So clearly, this might become a big issue as the governor of Tamil Nadu
02:36who has been quite critical of the Tamil Nadu government at many occasions
02:40has once again hit out at the government.
