00:00Wait, you and your friends are dead? Game over?
00:02Might put a bit of a damper when it comes to trick-or-treating.
00:05Here's your spooky spot on the Spirit Halloween Retro Friday the 13th, Jason Mask.
00:10Ready to bring your favorite video game to life?
00:30Show your love for Friday the 13th, the game in this officially licensed Jason Voorhees Retro Mask, designed to replicate the Slasher's classic video game look.
00:40I see the boy from below is now rocking the purple and the blue.
00:43But is it the right purple? And is it the right blue?
00:46Before we talk about Jason's strange retro-colored choices, I actually found this at my local Spirit Halloween store, and it's a good time that I picked this up too.
00:54Because when I went into the store, they only had two of these on the shelf, along with the Savini Jason Mask.
01:00Now, my only real interest was to get the NES Jason, because I didn't really like, honestly, the way that the Savini Mask looked.
01:06Sure enough, though, I went back a week later, and all the Retro and AS Jason Masks were completely gone.
01:12They had one Savini Mask, and you know, I didn't want to make that mistake of going back to the store again, because you know I would have.
01:18And I know that that mask would have been gone too.
01:20So I picked up the Savini Mask we will be looking at in an upcoming review.
01:23Jeez, how many times have you gone back to the store?
01:25I think now I'm clocking at about six times, with another seventh time coming up shortly.
01:31There's a new coupon that's dropped. You can't blame me for that.
01:33We're also going to be talking about whether, again, this mask looks accurate to the way...
01:37Now, again, it's based on the way that the skin was done for the retro...
01:41Well, the Retro Jason Mask was done for the Friday the 13th video game.
01:44The newest one that came out a couple years ago.
01:47Not that the colors are supposed to be based on the original Nintendo game, because there really aren't.
01:52We're also going to get some tape measuring going, just in case you're curious as to how big the mask actually is.
01:56From the bottom of the mask, where it's breathing all is, to the top of it, you're looking at the mask being at about 10 inches in length.
02:04Working out to be about 25 centimeters long.
02:06From one end of the strap to the other, it's about 8 inches in width, or roughly about 21 centimeters wide.
02:13I see we're being joined by the evil candle.
02:15We're also being joined as well by the car that comes strapped to the mask when you get this off the peg.
02:19A little bit of clipping is all that's required to cut the little thin strands of plastic that come looped around the mask.
02:25I did want to hold on to this at least to show you that it's actually from, again, the Friday the 13th video game.
02:30But also that the price that I paid for this was $24.99.
02:34And that's full price.
02:35I didn't actually have a coupon at the time to redeem that.
02:38So, again, $24.99.
02:39It's a bit high, but seeing some of the inferior-looking masks that's Spirit Halloween, there's one that I'm tempted to grab just more to discuss than anything else.
02:49It's a pretty crappy-looking Jason mask.
02:51I wouldn't say that necessarily this is crappy.
02:53There are a few little problems that I have with it, especially if it's supposed to be a skin from the game.
02:58But, again, I just want to show you guys what this looks like.
03:00I also want to take the mask off from the mannequin head that I just recently purchased on Amazon.
03:06I thought this was actually going to be a full-scale or full-sized mannequin head that would be properly accommodating a mask that would be displaying on it.
03:14Well, clearly, as you can see, though, by the way the Jason mask sits on it, it's completely the wrong size.
03:19I'm just going to take this off right now.
03:21I mean, it's not a bad mannequin head, but it's just smaller than I expected it to be.
03:25So I'm going to see if I can maybe get myself a much larger one.
03:28And obviously one to better hold a mask that I'm looking to review.
03:31For the mask itself, I think it's okay for what it is.
03:35It's made of clearly, though, plastic.
03:37And it's molded, I'm guessing, probably from an original Friday 13th 3 mask, if they ever did produce one.
03:43I mean, which is really fitting because, again, like the skin of the NES Jason was actually skinned from Friday 13th Part 3 Jason in the game.
03:51So, like, there are things, notably, that you can't hold on.
03:53Let me just get the mannequin head.
03:54I can't finish this review while the mannequin head's looking eerily at me.
03:59There are things that you can see, though, on the mask that get carried over from the Friday 13th 3 design.
04:06I think that's a wrong thing that they did.
04:08Like, for example, that you can see that even though everything is really cast in this metallic blue finish,
04:14there's still evident areas where you can see, like, the chevrons are there.
04:18There's a chevron on either side of the mask.
04:20And, again, there's one in the middle there, which is accurate to Friday 13th Part 3.
04:24But to go back and watch again, like, footage from Friday 13th, well, the Friday 13th game in the skin for the NES Jason,
04:30I don't believe, like, the chevrons really should have been there at all.
04:34Generally, for the most part, Jason does have, well, it does have, like, this blue.
04:38So I will say, like, the colors are right in that regard.
04:41I think they landed the perfect blue and the decently colored purple.
04:45I think, like, the purple and the blue are the things that at least Spirit Halloween did right.
04:49What I don't think they did right, though, was by keeping the chevrons on this mask.
04:54The game itself really does have the skin of Jason, where the mask seems more smooth than anything else.
04:58The only one thing that I do seem to spot on the Jason mask is a kind of little line groove right here.
05:05It's just above, like, the two holes above his eyes, which clearly now have been redesigned with the new look of Jason.
05:11I'm not going to even talk about that in this video.
05:13But there's, though, a gouged line right here that Jason has.
05:16If I really was to be a stickler, though, for details, I think also, like, the straps should be a little bit further down as well.
05:22I think in the game, like, the snaps that he has, and again, he has the two in the bottom, so I think that's right.
05:27The straps that he naturally would have here on the side, too, I think they should be a little bit lower down,
05:32and they should be closer into the mask.
05:34Because if you look at, actually, the way that Jason moves with the mask, the straps, I feel, are further down.
05:39And they're a little bit wider, but I'm not going to be, like, nickel and diming how accurate a game like this or how accurate a mask like this should look for a $25 price.
05:48The things, again, I think are good about it is the color, 100%.
05:52I think, like, that metallic kind of teal-ish aquamarine kind of blue I think is actually correct.
05:58I think also the coloring that they use for the purple is good, too.
06:01Where I think, again, like, the mask fails the most is adding too many unnecessary imperfections.
06:07So, again, like, you've got, like, cracks all along the side of the mask right here.
06:11Again, you've got a couple of indents and little scratches and gouges there on the sides of the mask.
06:16Like, the mask does have age if you're looking at it from the Friday the 13th Part 3 designs.
06:21But, like, for the mask to be a skin in the game, he really did have a much smoother finish than what he actually has here.
06:28What I will say, though, is while we won't be trying this on in the video,
06:32on the back, though, I will say the mask is quite comfortable.
06:35A lot of it really has to do with the fact that they did add this little rectangular piece of foam.
06:40I mean, it's just enough padding that when you do put it on your face,
06:44when you put it on your face, though, there's just that right of support that actually sits against your forehead.
06:50And it doesn't feel like it rocks around a lot, which is a good thing as well.
06:55Again, there's some adjustability to the straps themselves.
06:58The straps are elasticized.
07:00So, right there, there's some give, obviously, when you're going to be putting this on your head.
07:05But then you can also, as well, you can tighten this.
07:08So, there's, like, a little adjustment on the side.
07:10Now, I will say, though, I have a pretty large head.
07:13Putting this on my own head, I feel like it probably could have been tightened a little bit more than what it was.
07:18But I did deliberately leave it as loose as I did because that's the way it came out of the store.
07:23You know, again, I kind of want to leave it at the length that it was to kind of give you an idea of how big.
07:28I don't know whose face or whose head that would actually fit.
07:31I mean, that's a pretty big-sized melon.
07:33But, you know, again, like, there's a fair bit of give to give when it comes to certainly having this wearable on any person's face.
07:40The colors, again, of the snaps are pretty close.
07:42Like, again, they probably would have likely gone in there and just painted this in a metallic purple finish.
07:46But at least the attention to detail is there that they did actually paint it.
07:50I think in the game as well, like, these snaps are accurately done in purple to match the coloring of the straps that he has attached or snapped to the top.
07:59The snaps, by the way, don't feel like they can detach.
08:02Normally, these would just have snapped in place.
08:06But by the way that they are snapped, see, like, putting pressure against this, I feel like if I pull this, I'm only just going to break this.
08:13I really don't want to do that.
08:15Again, like, you've got all the holes where they need to be.
08:17No, he doesn't have 13 air holes.
08:19That's just, again, a new design that they've implanted to the mask.
08:23The things, again, I like about it, the color.
08:25The color of the blue, the color of the purple.
08:27I don't really like that it's metallic like this.
08:30You know, again, like, if truth be told, if I ever wanted to get, like, Nintendo, Nintendo, NECA did release a Nintendo NES Jason mask.
08:39And it did have more of a matte blue finish, more of a pastel blue.
08:43That ideally would have been the better mask to have on display, which I actually do have on display right now.
08:48This metallic finish doesn't work so much for me to be like an NES Jason.
08:52But, again, if you were to base it from the Friday the 13th recent game, I think, again, like, the colors are pretty close.
08:57The metallic finish, again, may not appeal to everybody, but the color, I think, is pretty close.
09:02The purple, again, looks pretty good.
09:03The only thing, if I could say the one thing that really does bother me the most about this, is that the fact that, like, there's too many imperfections to the mask.
09:11The placement of the chevrons, I don't think they even need to be there in the first place.
09:14If this was, again, just a recasting of what they've already used, and actually, on the inside, too, I did want to show you that it does say Friday the 13th, Friday the 13th, the video game.
09:23If they did release, though, a Friday the 13th Part 3 mask, it would be safe to assume that Spirit Halloween simply just cast the mold again in this metallic blue finish and gave us, then, the retro mask.
09:34I mean, all in all, it's not a bad-looking mask.
09:36If you don't mind the fact that it does have, like with the mannequin mask that I picked up, it just doesn't have the right details, doesn't have the right dimensions.
09:45The mask, I feel like, especially when you're putting it down on a mannequin head, for example, I feel it also is a little longer than it really needed to be.
09:52From what I really remember, the NES Jason mask was a little bit more wider, and maybe not as, maybe, like, in the mouth area, it wasn't as long.
10:01So, if I was just to kind of push this up a little bit, stretch it out just a little bit more, and actually, even, like, make it a little bit more boxier on the side.
10:08The problem with that, though, I mean, you know, you have to look at this.
10:12Somebody didn't design this, and they're not selling it for, like, $80 to $100.
10:15This is a, for the most part, a retail-release mask you're getting easily, or somewhat easily, if you can still find them, at Spirit Halloween at $25.
10:24$25, I suppose you kind of have to overlook the fact that it doesn't 100% match the game.
10:29But, I guess, if you are looking for an NES Jason mask from the game, it's the closest thing that you're going to get for the cost that they're selling it for.
10:36While I may have some buyers regret about buying this overly undersized mannequin head, you know, to type in mannequin head on Amazon,
10:44you would think what was shipped to you would be a mannequin head with a head of human size.
10:48And yet, unfortunately, it wasn't.
10:50However, though, the mask that is currently on it loose does fit comfortably on a regular human head, with enough adjustability to the straps, too.
10:58Even if you have a large head or a small head, it should accommodate both.
11:03Now, again, to go back and looking at the details that we discussed in this review,
11:06one thing I made several times apparent was that the placement of having chevrons on the mask was incorrect.
11:12That actually was an incorrect statement of saying something was incorrect.
11:16I went back and looked at high-res images of the skin mask from Friday the 13th game.
11:21And the NES Jason does, in fact, have a chevron.
11:23They're not as noticeable, though, on the cheeks.
11:27It's a little bit more noticeable, the chevron, the big giant one, in between his eyes.
11:31So he does have it, but he doesn't have it in the way that they've designed it here.
11:35I mean, with the Friday the 13th NES mask, it's essentially just a skin over the NES Jason from Friday the 13th Part 3.
11:42So logically, if Spirit Halloween hasn't already released a Friday the 13th Part 3D mask,
11:48they could either base it from the mold that they've done here, or vice versa.
11:52They've already done one, and they just cast it again in this now metallic blue finish.
11:56The blue is the right color.
11:58The purple is the right color.
12:00And at least from the standpoint of seeing a chevron in the middle of the eyes, that is also correct.
12:05But there's still, again, too many imperfections to the rest of the mask.
12:08I feel like the mask is overly complicated, with too many scratches, too many indentations,
12:13when it didn't need to be that in the first place.
12:15The game does have a much smoother-looking mask, and I'm sure you probably could, if you had the money,
12:20venture to get a customized mask designer out there that could give you a much better-looking NES Jason mask.
12:26You have to kind of, again, look at this at the price point of what they're selling these for.
12:29For $25, $24.99, I can live with at least the fact that the imperfections are there,
12:34or the things aren't really matching the details to the game,
12:37if it means I have a pretty affordable mask I can put on the shelf.
12:41Now, there is also, on Spirit Halloween's site, and I say it's on the site because I didn't see it in the store,
12:45there's also a retro NES Jason costume, where in the description, they also say it includes the mask.
12:51I don't know if it actually is the same mask that we looked at in this video,
12:54or if it's a more flimsier, you know, the kind of mask that just feel like it's like a thin rubber,
12:59and it's just enough that you could literally just roll it up and put it in a bag.
13:03I don't know if it's that kind of mask that's going to come with the costume,
13:06but it is one that's going to be sold with the suit as well.
13:10They also are advertising a retro NES axe, which, unfortunately, the costume or the axe
13:16weren't available at the time that I've gone to my local Spirit Halloween store.
13:19And still, the last time they went back in the store, they didn't have the retro mask,
13:24they didn't have the Savini mask, they didn't have anything related to NES Jason.
13:28What do you guys, though, think of the mask? Let me know down below in the comments section.
13:31Do you feel like it's enough of a closer resemblance to looking like the game,
13:35or do you feel like there's too many things wrong with this for you to want to pick this up for yourself?
13:38Let me know what you guys think of it down below.
13:41Again, if you guys did enjoy this video, do it a solid and hit it with a like.
13:44You guys want to stick around for more so?
13:45I hope so.
13:47We're wrapping up things right now for Camp Crystal Lake and all the many skins of Jason Voorhees.
13:51That doesn't sound right.
13:52But there will be more spooky related videos coming your way for the rest of this Spottober.
13:56So I hope you guys are going to be joining me for that.
13:58As always, guys, thanks for watching.
14:00See you guys next time.
