00:30Nessled between the Scottish highlands and lowlands is Loch Lomond.
00:43With a surface area of 27.5 square miles and a depth of 502 feet,
00:50it's the largest inland stretch of water in Great Britain.
00:53And Loch Lomond is a lovely remote location that thousands and thousands of people enjoy every weekend.
01:08It's also regularly used for training by police divers.
01:11A police diving team must keep up their skills at all times.
01:26And in order to do this, they must train somewhere deep or somewhere in flowing water,
01:32no visibility, different environments to practice their skills.
01:36You know, the water in Loch Lomond is fairly cold all year round.
01:44As far as the diving team was concerned, we were in Loch Lomond on a regular basis.
01:49Quite a different variety of locations that we can find,
01:53from deep water to shallow water,
01:56from really, really good clear water to quite poor visibility.
02:00On a cold December morning, police diving supervisor Jeff Adams
02:12was leading a dive team on a training exercise near Loch Lomond's Rowerdennen Pier.
02:17This is Rowerdennen, where it all began.
02:24Nothing much has changed from 25 years ago.
02:27It was even colder than it is today.
02:30Snow, rain, high winds.
02:34It was quite a horrible day.
02:36Jeff was on the pier running the operation as his team entered the icy water.
02:42We were just sending the divers out to make sure that they covered this large area.
02:47It was purely by accident that the divers were sent to an area
02:51that they suddenly saw these two black bin bags.
03:00Being inquisitive by nature and, if you like, by training,
03:03they went to have a look and see what was in these bags.
03:06The officer found an arm.
03:17He thought initially that his colleagues on shore
03:22were playing a practical joke on him.
03:24He thought it was a mannequin inside a black plastic bag.
03:28Either that or he thought,
03:28maybe this is a test to see if I'm doing my sets properly.
03:32Either way, he came out of the water and held the arm aloft
03:35as if to say, yes, I found it.
03:40I was quite convinced that there was some kind of practical joke being played.
03:45Very quickly, we realized it wasn't.
03:48The discovery of a severed arm and part of a leg
03:52meant the area was now a crime scene.
03:54Strathclyde police were called in.
04:02I was a detective superintendent.
04:05I was in charge of the Ayrshire area.
04:09It was all very early in the Monday morning.
04:12It was an unusual crime in Scotland
04:16and, in fact, pretty much the UK
04:18for body parts to be turning up
04:21in a local law.
04:28Once they realized there was a crime scene there,
04:31the surface area immediately around that point
04:34would have been sealed off
04:36from anyone else entering it
04:37apart from forensic people
04:39and the people that had to be there
04:40to investigate the crime.
04:42You need to make sure that everything is intact and secure
04:47so you'd put the body part into a polythene bag
04:51and make sure that that is sealed up
04:53so that nothing can escape it.
04:55You don't want to lose anything,
04:58skin sloughing off
04:59or anything else falling off the body.
05:02Once the limbs had been found,
05:04then they would start resorting back
05:05to proper search techniques and search patterns
05:08to start looking for any more evidence
05:10and to look for the rest of the body parts.
05:12With just an arm
05:18and part of a leg to work from,
05:21police turned to missing person records
05:23to shed light on who their victim might be.
05:27Meanwhile, a specialist water team scoured the loch
05:31using underwater cameras and sonar equipment.
05:35Sonar, it's a very crude method.
05:38It can find things, but what it can't do
05:42is say for definite that there's nothing there.
05:44So, technology-wise,
05:46you really can't beat the aspect
05:49of putting a police diver in
05:50to search it properly.
05:52So, recovery of the first two items
06:01would be roughly 15, 20 metres
06:04off the corner of the pier as we're looking at it.
06:07We continued the search later on
06:10and found another body part
06:12down in this corner of the pier.
06:14Every body of water has a tide of some sort,
06:24but it's too small to measure,
06:26and that's the case of Loch Lomond.
06:28Although it's the largest in surface area
06:30of any freshwater body of water
06:32on the UK mainland,
06:34it still doesn't have any measurable tidal flow.
06:38So, most likely,
06:41the limbs were actually put into the water
06:44near the pier.
06:50By the 8th of December,
06:52divers had recovered two hands,
06:54two arms, two lower legs,
06:56one thigh, and a foot.
06:59They were maybe of a slightly older male,
07:01but they weren't sure,
07:03and they were searching for further body parts.
07:05And by now,
07:08the search had attracted the attention of the press.
07:16At the time, the newspaper I was working for,
07:18we got a tip-off about
07:19the police were searching for body parts,
07:22but the assumption was
07:23that this was possibly
07:25some sort of gangland crime-related incident,
07:28that possibly some criminals had fallen out,
07:32one had been murdered
07:33and these body parts disposed of.
07:35It's extremely difficult
07:42to dismember a body.
07:43You can't do it with knives
07:45that you usually keep in a kitchen.
07:47Somehow, there has to be
07:49some level of intention
07:50where they go out
07:52and buy various implements
07:54in order to saw the body into parts.
07:59Police were keeping an open mind.
08:01They also widened the search area.
08:08Once we'd finished,
08:09we realised that, you know,
08:10we hadn't found all the body parts
08:12to make up a human being.
08:14In the next phase,
08:15that you're trying to think,
08:16right, if they're not here,
08:18where are they?
08:19So you then have to look
08:20at any other possible sites
08:23where someone could have access
08:25to presumably a vehicle
08:27and be able to dump things in the water.
08:41Officers and the police diving team
08:43moved their search seven miles south
08:45along Loch Loman's shoreline
08:46to the quiet village of Balmaha.
08:51We were fairly confident
08:53that this would be a prime location
08:55for finding more
08:56because of accessibility
08:58and remote area,
09:01very, very limited police presence.
09:07Conditions here underwater
09:09are quite different
09:10to what we'd find at Rowerdennen,
09:11whereas Rowerdennen is clear,
09:14quite sandy bottom here,
09:15quite muddy
09:16and very, very poor visibility,
09:18which made the search of this area
09:20really quite difficult.
09:22It's often asked
09:23if we do underwater lights
09:25and everything else,
09:26which obviously we did have access to.
09:28It's effective like
09:29putting your main beam on in the fog.
09:33Suddenly you can see absolutely nothing.
09:35So, unfortunately,
09:36you're down in the mud
09:37and you're working with your fingertips.
09:41Now, why a murderer would choose
09:43to dispose of a body in water
09:45instead of burying it on land
09:47may be due to the belief
09:50that they're less likely to be caught
09:52if the body parts
09:54or a body is dropped into water.
09:56The offenders think
09:58that the body is likely to disappear
10:00or be eaten by fish.
10:02As the days developed,
10:06it was a very fast-moving story.
10:08I think people were very, very concerned.
10:10There was a kind of fear and undercurrent.
10:13For police,
10:14the race was now on
10:16to capture an individual
10:17with clear sadistic tendencies.
10:19On the conditional body parts,
10:22we found at Balmaha,
10:24you could see quite clearly
10:26that handcuffs had been used.
10:28You're not used to seeing them
10:29having made such an impression
10:31on a human body,
10:33and particularly to put handcuffs
10:35around someone's lower leg.
10:42One of the things
10:43that comes to mind immediately
10:44when I think about somebody
10:45who's restrained against their will
10:47with handcuffs is this need
10:49to dominate in control,
10:51and that being part
10:51of the sexual turn-on
10:52for that person.
10:54It's very rare to see situations
10:56where somebody is handcuffing somebody
10:58because they're wanting
10:59to kill them for money
11:00or kill them for revenge.
11:02By now, detectives had finished
11:05searching the missing person reports
11:06and had a possible name
11:08for their victim.
11:11But it's not one they
11:12or the press were expecting.
11:17Detectives in Scotland
11:32are scouring missing persons lists,
11:35trying to identify
11:36the murder victim
11:37whose dismembered body parts
11:38have been found in Loch Lomond.
11:41Now, they have a possible name.
11:44Barry Wallace,
11:46last seen the day
11:47before the body parts
11:49were discovered.
12:07Barry Wallace was 18 years of age
12:09and he was going out
12:10for a Christmas night out
12:11with his friends
12:13and his colleagues
12:13from a local supermarket
12:15in Kilmarnock.
12:17He'd had quite a lot to drink.
12:18He was last seen drunk,
12:20walking about Kilmarnock,
12:21trying to get a taxi.
12:23He didn't arrive home.
12:26He had no previous history
12:29of going missing.
12:32He had no previous history
12:33of any involvement
12:35in criminality.
12:37He was a good lad.
12:39His parents were concerned
12:40about where he was
12:41and when he hadn't come back
12:43late on a Sunday night
12:45and didn't report
12:46for work on a Monday morning,
12:47he was reported
12:48as a missing person.
12:50Barry would have disappeared
12:51into thin air.
12:52There was no backstory.
12:54There was no family issues.
12:57Just a normal teenager
12:58enjoying a Christmas night out
13:00and with his future
13:01ahead of him.
13:02Fifty miles north
13:13of Kilmarnock,
13:14the police search
13:15of Loch Lomond continued.
13:22On land,
13:24you can easily
13:24mark out search areas
13:26because everything
13:27is visible.
13:30Underwater,
13:31it's very, very different.
13:32because the people
13:33on the surface
13:34can't see what's going
13:35on underneath.
13:37You're looking
13:38at the distance out
13:39that the diver is
13:40from the bank
13:41and so just by taking
13:43measurements
13:43from the diver's lifeline
13:45as to how far out
13:46they are,
13:46how far along
13:47the search pattern
13:48they are,
13:48you can actually log
13:49on your underwater plan
13:51exactly what areas
13:52have been searched.
13:53You've also got to think
13:57if these limbs
13:59have been thrown
14:00into the water,
14:02how far out
14:03can they have been thrown?
14:04How far out
14:05are they likely
14:05to have drifted?
14:08Meanwhile,
14:09a pathologist
14:10examined the recovered limbs
14:12for clues
14:13about the murder weapon
14:14and what tools
14:15might have been used
14:16to dismember the body.
14:17It is actually
14:27very hard indeed
14:29to dismember a body
14:31cleanly.
14:33Sometimes there are
14:35marks associated
14:37with the cuts
14:37in the flesh
14:38that suggest
14:39it may be
14:40a serrated material.
14:41Sometimes a chainsaw
14:42is used,
14:43that leaves a different
14:44cutting impression.
14:45sometimes a grinding wheel,
14:47once again
14:47a different impression.
14:51You'd be looking
14:52at both the soft tissues,
14:54the muscles
14:54and the skin,
14:55but also any cuts
14:57through bone
14:57which are much better
14:59at reproducing
15:00the implement
15:01that was used.
15:03Parts of the bones
15:05were transported
15:06by a road
15:07to specialists
15:07in England,
15:08but all they could say
15:09was they were cut
15:11with a fine-toothed saw.
15:13If we were hoping
15:13for maybe something
15:14more specific
15:15that we could focus
15:16a part of the investigation
15:17on,
15:18but that just came
15:19to a dead end
15:21unfortunately.
15:25Officers suspected
15:26missing person
15:27Barry Wallace
15:28was the victim
15:29whose body parts
15:30they had found,
15:31but they still
15:32had no definite proof.
15:34until the 15th
15:43of December
15:43and the most
15:45grisly discovery yet.
15:52At a beachfront
15:53on Scotland's
15:54west coast,
15:55more than 50 miles
15:58from Loch Lomond.
15:59A lady had been
16:08walking her dog
16:09and her dog
16:10had noticed
16:12two bags
16:13and was pulling
16:14at the bags
16:14and when she went up
16:16she saw
16:16that it was
16:17a human head.
16:18To the best
16:31of my recollection
16:31it was just
16:32down near
16:33where the rocky
16:34area starts
16:35and where you see
16:37the bits of seaweed
16:38lying
16:38in that kind
16:39of area there.
16:42Disposing your body
16:43at sea
16:43is tricky
16:44in many ways.
16:46In some places
16:47the tide's very weak
16:48or nonexistent.
16:49In other places
16:49they're incredibly strong.
16:51We can get flows
16:52in excess
16:53of 15 miles an hour
16:55in some places
16:55which is phenomenal.
16:58The tide goes
16:59back and forth
17:00so a body
17:01might go
17:01at great speed
17:02in one direction
17:03but six and a half
17:05hours later
17:06it comes back again.
17:10We can only assume
17:11that it was
17:12the temperature
17:12of the seawater
17:14but preserved
17:16of the head.
17:20Being cold
17:21of course
17:21is really important
17:23for us.
17:23It preserves
17:24the tissues
17:25it preserves
17:26the cut marks
17:27it preserves
17:28evidence
17:28and that's
17:29what we want.
17:31So if it's been
17:32out of the water
17:33in a warm environment
17:34for two or three days
17:35before being deposited
17:36that's going to have
17:38a significant effect
17:39but if
17:40on the other hand
17:41the individual
17:42has died
17:43it's put quickly
17:43into water
17:44preservation
17:45is going to be
17:46much much better.
17:51In this case
17:53the head
17:53was so well preserved
17:55it was even possible
17:56to confirm
17:57the victim's identity.
18:01Unfortunately
18:02it was Barry.
18:03it was a big step
18:15forward for investigators
18:16but the coastal nature
18:18of the crime scene
18:19put them under
18:20time pressure.
18:25You've got access
18:26by the public
18:26along the beach
18:27so you're going to have
18:28to coordinate
18:29all off
18:29you're then dealing
18:30with the tides
18:32if the tide comes in
18:34it's going to bring in
18:35sea creatures
18:36that like
18:37fleshy parts
18:38of human bodies.
18:41You're wanting to get
18:41this skull
18:42recovered as quickly
18:43as possible
18:43photographed
18:44bagged up
18:45and taken out
18:46of the way
18:46out of that environment
18:47before the sea
18:49and everything
18:49that lives in it
18:50comes back in.
18:51I knew I was going
19:00to have to go
19:01and see his parents
19:03they're two of the
19:05nicest people
19:06I've ever met
19:07one of the
19:11farm realizing officers
19:12took
19:13Barry's dad
19:15to Glasgow City
19:16Marcery
19:17to identify him
19:19I think people
19:32were horrified
19:33I think they were
19:34absolutely stunned
19:36shocked and horrified
19:37that an innocent boy
19:39and he was
19:40could end up
19:42in this situation
19:43Barry Wallace
19:45had gone missing
19:46in the early hours
19:48of the Sunday morning
19:49and then the first
19:50body parts
19:51are found
19:51very early
19:52on the Monday morning
19:54so whoever
19:56has done this
19:57has done it
19:58very quickly
19:59and could well
20:01have done
20:02something like that
20:02before.
20:05The offender
20:06would be
20:07someone who
20:08would be callous
20:09have no empathy
20:10for anyone
20:11would be extremely
20:12selfish
20:13and possibly impulsive
20:14now the police
20:18would then
20:18look to see
20:20who
20:20in the area
20:22had a criminal record
20:24especially for violence
20:25The main trade
20:28that we were focused
20:29on was dismemberment
20:30Initially
20:31a check was made
20:32in the police
20:32computer system
20:33and there was
20:34a very short list
20:35of one person
20:36who had
20:36an MO
20:37of
20:38carrying out
20:40dismemberment
20:41we had a suspect
20:43right in our doorstep
20:44In a chilly
21:02Scottish loch
21:03police have found
21:04and identified
21:05the remains
21:06of 18 year old
21:08Barry Wallace
21:09As soon as the search
21:13was made
21:14they realised
21:14that it was
21:15actually
21:15a human
21:16body part

21:19like wildfire
21:20because
21:21that's
21:22a very
21:22uncommon occurrence
21:23This was
21:26absolutely horrific
21:27This was
21:27off the scale
21:28Now
21:29they also
21:30have a suspect
21:31a known
21:32local offender
21:33by the name
21:35of William
21:36Frederick Beggs
21:37A man
21:39with a violent
21:40past
21:40Beggs
21:50Beggs had
21:50previously
21:51stood trial
21:52for an incident
21:53in Kilmarnock
21:54eight years
21:55early in 1991
21:56where he had
21:58invited a gentleman
21:59back to his home
22:00They'd met
22:01in a gay bar
22:02in Glasgow
22:03and this person
22:04had been given
22:05a drink
22:06that was drugged
22:08and he fell
22:09unconscious
22:10and woke up
22:11to find
22:12Beggs attacking
22:13him with a knife
22:14and trying to
22:15cut him up
22:16or slash him
22:17This particular
22:19individual
22:20jumped out
22:21a window
22:21to escape
22:22Beggs
22:22and he was
22:23found by
22:24a local resident
22:25taking to
22:25hospital
22:26Beggs was
22:27arrested
22:28Beggs was
22:32sentenced
22:32to six years
22:33for the attack
22:34and there was
22:35more
22:36He had also
22:37previously been
22:38imprisoned
22:39for the murder
22:39of a 28-year-old
22:41man in 1987
22:42but the conviction
22:44was quashed
22:45on appeal
22:46They'd led
22:48the trial
22:48of murder
22:49with instances
22:50that Beggs
22:51had carried out
22:51woundings
22:52of other men
22:53and it was
22:54deemed that
22:54because they
22:55had led that
22:56it was unfair
22:57and might have
22:58tainted the jury's
22:59opinion of him
23:01as far as
23:02the murder's
23:02concerned
23:02and the appeal
23:04was upheld
23:04and he was
23:04released
23:05Beggs' lawyers
23:08succeeded in

23:12he couldn't be
23:14retried for the

23:18Beggs started

23:24that he had
23:25been convicted
23:25of a murder
23:26in Teesside
23:27We knew
23:28that he had
23:28got off
23:29with that murder
23:29on a technicality
23:30But although
23:32the conviction
23:32was overturned
23:33the details
23:34of that murder
23:35for which
23:35Beggs was
23:36the only suspect
23:37were worryingly
23:38similar to the
23:38crime police
23:39were now
23:40investigating
23:40There had been
23:42attempts to
23:42dismember
23:43the loons
23:44Dismembering a body
23:48is extremely
23:48a rare thing
23:49to happen
23:50after someone
23:50has killed

23:51and in that
23:52particular case

23:54evidence

23:55to dismember

24:23Beggs
24:23as a person
24:24of interest

45:14it be difficult
