00:00Jones and Keefe, Thursday, 1130, means it's time for Rob Bradford, W-E-E-I, and the Baseball Isn't Boring podcast.
00:07You can check it out on the Odyssey app, A-U-D-A-C-Y.
00:10Get it on your phone, free, easy, take it with you wherever you go.
00:14Rob Bradford, brought to you by McFarlane Energy, the heating, cooling, and bioheat delivery pros at Easter Mass,
00:19and all of Cape Cod depend on at McFarlaneEnergy.com.
00:24Bradfo, how we doing? It's do or die tonight.
00:26Oh, my goodness. I'm yelling McFarlane ever since 6 o'clock this morning.
00:30It's just over and over and over again, and I will not bore you with any travel stories about me getting $800 vouchers
00:36because I don't know what I'm doing. I have no idea. I'm sitting here, I don't know what I'm doing.
00:41It's kind of good. It's kind of exciting. I don't know if you guys have that same excitement, the anticipation, let's go.
00:48I have a lot of feelings. I have a lot of feelings right now.
00:51I feel that.
00:52Bradford, you say you don't know what you're doing.
00:54Could we apply that same thought to one Kyle Hudson?
00:58What, honest to God, what was that there with Nate Eaton?
01:02Yeah, so late last night, we got the all-22, right?
01:06We got the all-22 of the breakdown of that play, the overhead camera.
01:11All-18, yeah.
01:12Yeah, the all-18, exactly, exactly.
01:15And so, yeah, I don't think there's any question that the big mistake there was Kyle Hudson not reading the room right and holding Eaton.
01:25I mean, I think Eaton wasn't, as he said, after the game, Eaton said, you know, I was running.
01:30You know, I was told to hold. I couldn't see the play after that.
01:33I couldn't see over there, and then that was that.
01:35But really, once Kyle Hudson holds him, I don't think he had a chance.
01:41I don't think it went up far enough away.
01:43But what he shouldn't have done was hold him, because if you see it, he holds him, and basically, Jazz Chisholm is sprawled out trying to get his wits together to throw to first.
01:54There was no way he was throwing home.
01:56So he should have known just to keep going, just to keep sending him all the way home.
02:01That, to me, was the biggest mistake of all.
02:03I don't think it was after the fact.
02:05I don't think it was after he got away.
02:06I think that was too late.
02:08I think he should have sent him.
02:09No, and I agree, especially, you know, knowing how Eaton's speed can change a game like we saw just a few weeks ago against Oakland.
02:16So I'd have him first on the list of who to blame for last night.
02:20That whole play was just so crushing.
02:22After that, the Rafaela bunt, and there's, I didn't realize this would be such a debate today.
02:27I heard Greg's show talking about it.
02:28Me and Keith actually disagree to a degree on how much of bunting there is on Cora, how much of the lack of execution is on Rafaela.
02:36How did you view that issue for the Red Sox late in the game?
02:39I don't know if you could feel the venom coming through my tweet when I just simply said two words or three words, tilt the bat.
02:50Tilt the bat.
02:52It drives me nuts.
02:54You know, to answer your question, I don't necessarily have a problem in bunting there, but if you have a participant who isn't willing to tilt the bat, then don't do it.
03:08Like, don't do it.
03:09Like, that's what I'm talking about, of course, is when you're taught to bunt, you're taught do not hold the bat perpendicular.
03:16Do not hold it just flat, because what will happen is that you have a much less chance of getting the bunt down.
03:23Rafaela, two straight times, not only were the pitches out of the strike zone, but the form was just awful.
03:30It drives me nuts.
03:31So what that tells me is that he wasn't really a willing participant.
03:36He didn't know how to do it, and if you don't know how to do it and you're not a willing participant, then probably find another avenue to go.
03:44Well, and you brought up, Brad Foe, there were two, like, even if Cora wanted to do it, you saw him offer it the first one.
03:49He looked so bad on the first one.
03:51That's where I put some blame on Cora.
03:54Like, he could have called it off after you saw the horrible effort on the first one.
03:57Yeah, and I hear you.
04:00Like, I just, I would like to think that a Major League Baseball player, especially one whose game is somewhat predicated on speed throughout his career.
04:10I mean, this is a guy, keep in mind, this is a guy, when he signed a professional contract and hit one home run outside the park home run his entire life.
04:20So what does that tell you?
04:22Probably he's had to do something along these lines at some point.
04:26But I don't know why you can't dysfunction in that situation.
04:30And people will say, I know that baseball players will say, it's really hard to do because the pitching is just, the ball is coming out, it's bobbing and weaving all over the place.
04:40And that's true.
04:41But even if you miss it, then just do it right.
04:44So, yeah.
04:45So I don't have a problem with the actual calling for it, but the execution was terrible.
04:51Two of the big decisions Cora had to make last night, when to take out Brian Baio.
04:56He went quick hook on Baio, and then how long to stick with Whitlock.
04:59He seemed to give him a long hook, as it were.
05:03So what were your thoughts on those two decisions?
05:06Yeah, the Baio one, you know, we should have saw it coming.
05:10You know, Baio hasn't stopped, hasn't been great the last few outings.
05:14And, you know, I think we all, or at least I was seduced with the idea of like, okay, we're going to do the John Lester, Josh Beckett, Curt Schilling, Jordan Montgomery, Zach Allen, you know, Nathan Evaldi thing.
05:25Where are you just going to ride all these starters to the promised land?
05:29And, yeah, because we saw Crochet.
05:31But, no, that's not how these postseasons work.
05:34And we were reminded that with Baio.
05:36His stuff hadn't been good.
05:37And I think they knew that.
05:39They saw that.
05:40And they're like, we're not taking any chances.
05:42We're going to rope-a-dope the Yankees.
05:44We're going to get all your lefties in there.
05:45And then we're going to come with all these left-handed pitching.
05:48And for a while, it looked like an unbelievably great move.
05:51But, you know, I think that ultimately if you go on any run, I mean, I just, you have to have two good starters, man.
05:58Like, you have to find them.
06:00You can't just keep, because what happens is what happened last year in the postseason.
06:04Teams ultimately run out of relief pitchers.
06:06And I think that that's the predicament the Red Sox are in right now.
06:09And you go to Whitlock.
06:10Well, yeah, you know, Whitlock is like you got to the point of no return with them.
06:15Now you aren't using them.
06:16Like, there's no way that you can possibly use them.
06:18You burnt them.
06:19Nothing tonight?
06:21I mean, what do you throw, like 48 pitches or something like that?
06:24Yeah, 47.
06:2547, season high, yeah.
06:26Yeah, yeah.
06:27No, I mean, I can't.
06:28I mean, maybe they'll say all hands on deck and everything else.
06:32But that's really hard for me to see.
06:36I mean, I should never say he's not pitching because it is all hands on deck.
06:41I mean, Aroldis Chapman, I think, would have come in the ninth inning last night,
06:45even after getting four outs the night before.
06:47So, yeah, but still, like, what's this stuff going to look like?
06:52And this is, I mean, make no mistake about it.
06:54Like, we can talk about all the maneuvering that Cora has had to do and will do.
07:00But one of the foundations, one of the things that they felt like they could count on was Whitlock and Chapman.
07:05Like, I think that he said that on maybe on the afternoon show.
07:10That that is, he thought that was the best one-two combination for bullpens in the entire major leagues.
07:16And Whitlock almost got there, but then he got to the two outs and obviously it went the other way.
07:21And that's, to not have those two guys at their absolute best, that's on the top of the power rankings and how it's not going to work.
07:29All right, so I have a, admittedly, a stupid question, which could lead to a very smart answer.
07:33Oh, I like it.
07:34You mentioned the rope-a-dope there, and Baio ended up going, like, two and a third.
07:38Because so many teams now have such lefty lineups versus righty lineups, is there any rule, let's just take this to the next level,
07:45is there any rule to say, hey, you know, Brian Baio's our starter, Brian Baio's our starter.
07:52He throws one pitch, and then you put in, like, Connelly early.
07:55And then the next day you do the same thing.
07:57You're like, our starting pitcher today is Peyton Tolley.
07:59They load it up with righties, and then you're like, just kidding, it's Brian Baio.
08:03Is there any rule against that?
08:04Because it's not like a substitution thing in other sports.
08:06Like, if that pitcher's out for that game, great, he's out.
08:08He's going to pitch the next day anyway.
08:10You've got to face three batters, though, right?
08:12Okay, so you've got to face three.
08:14Well, no, that's in a – but you do?
08:17Yeah, you have to face three batters.
08:19That's a reliever rule.
08:19Is that also a starter rule?
08:20Oh, that's a good question.
08:21I think it's – I believe it's every pitcher.
08:24Okay.
08:24You have to face three batters.
08:25But can you be like, ah, my arm?
08:27Oh, yeah.
08:28You could be like, ah, my arm.
08:29Oh, wow.
08:29Ah, my arm.
08:30I mean, there's a lot of – but unfortunately, there's a lot of ah, my arm,
08:34by the way, great Rodney Dangerfield reference.
08:38There's a lot of Rodney Dangerfield moments in the postseason now.
08:41We saw it with the Cubs yesterday where they're trying to outsmart themselves
08:45and bring Imanaga in after having an opener just so he can avoid facing
08:51Manny Machado in the first inning.
08:53And then he faces Manny Machado.
08:54It's a home run.
08:56So, yeah.
08:57I mean, yeah, you can do that.
08:59But you've got to be careful because, you know, you only have so many pitchers.
09:04That's my problem with this whole strategy.
09:06We're going to see again tonight, which is, it's fine.
09:10You want to run out all these relievers?
09:12Yeah, last postseason, relievers pitched more innings than starters.
09:15That's crazy to me.
09:16But what happens, you saw it in Detroit last year.
09:18You saw it with Cleveland last year.
09:20You really saw it with the Dodgers almost at the end where you run out of pitchers.
09:24You have these guys running on fumes.
09:26And when you want to spin it forward to the night, like,
09:29they can talk about all hands on deck.
09:32But believe me, if they are, I would imagine they are certainly banking on Conley Early,
09:38maybe giving five or six.
09:40Probably not six.
09:41That's unheard of.
09:42But giving five than they were Brian Baio last night.
09:47What do you think happens tonight, Brad Foe?
09:49Who you got?
09:51Man, don't ask me that.
09:53I'm terrible.
09:54It's like, it's...
09:55I repeat.
09:56I repeat.
09:57Who wins?
09:57We must know.
09:58Yeah, you know what?
10:00Because I feel like the Yankees are going to win, I'll pick the Red Sox.
10:05Because I'm just...
10:06I am also all over the place.
10:08Well, the one thing that I do think with Early,
10:10and I think that maybe we obsess over the starting pitching maybe too much,
10:14because ultimately these games have been decided with things like Nate Eaton
10:18and Whitlock and everything else.
10:21But I do think that if they are able to find a crack in the armor of our guy,
10:26the guy who used to put Christmas trees on top of cars in the wall pole,
10:30Cam Schlittler, you know, if you can...
10:33Yeah, there you go.
10:34You're welcome.
10:35So, if you can find a crack in the armor and you can do one of these things like they did
10:40at Fenway against the Yankees and put up six runs or whatever,
10:44and then you can ride Conley Early a little bit,
10:46I can see Conley Early doing well is what I'm saying.
10:50Because not only because he went to West Point and makes his bed and is very disciplined,
10:54but because he has that sort of mindset to succeed,
10:59he has the stuff to succeed in multiple ways,
11:02not just the Peyton Toley one or two pitches.
11:05He can get all these pitches over the plate.
11:07I don't think he's going to be overwhelmed by the moment.
11:10So, you know, I do think that Conley Early is going to be good.
11:13And also, the factor is, one of the things, guys, I don't know,
11:17Peyton Toley came in last night, right?
11:19And, like, he's been up and down.
11:21But one thing that you're reminded watching Peyton Toley go against,
11:24I forget who it was he faced at the end,
11:26but I was like, they're like an hour late on his fastball.
11:29And that made me kind of think about when you don't see a guy,
11:33like, that's how that is.
11:35And I can see a little bit of that with Early tonight.
11:37Okay.
11:38It was Grisham who he got out last night.
11:40Yeah.
11:40His stupid mustache.
11:42Not Toley.
11:43Not Toley.
11:44Not Toley's mustache.
11:45Grisham.
11:46Grisham's stupid mustache.
11:47Stupid mustache.
11:48And by the way, Lucas Giolito forgives you, Rich Keith.
11:51He says that his appearance on Dork had nothing to do with his misfortune.
11:56I feel terrible.
11:57I don't know if I should reach out.
11:57Maybe he has more time to do more podcasts,
11:59or maybe I should just stay away.
12:01You let him know only half the show agrees with him.
12:04Anyway, Bradfoe, good stuff.
12:05Check him out at Bradfoe on Twitter.
12:08You can listen to Baseball Isn't Boring on the Odyssey app.
12:10We'll talk to you next week, Bradfoe.
12:12All right.
12:13See you guys.
12:13All right.
12:14All right.
12:14Thank you, sir.
12:16I can picture.
12:18He's got, he's got,
12:18he's feeling positive though about Connelly Early.
12:21Well, he is,
12:22but then he could be a little bit of a fault hero.
12:23He also said he thinks the Yankees are going to win,
12:25so he's picking the Red Sox.
12:26I was a little confused at all of that,
12:27but he does seem a little more.
12:28He doesn't like doing predictions, it sounds like.
12:30Look, here's what I got out of that.
12:31Yeah.
12:31He wants over on eight and a half outs for Connelly Early.
12:33I got that out of his answer.
12:35Yeah.
12:35What about over under runs tonight?
12:37Seven and a half.
12:38There's not been a lot of runs in the series.
12:40So is this like,
12:41does it continue or is this like a 10,
12:43eight game?
12:44I'll take the over.
12:45Take the over.
12:46What's is,
12:47where's the juice?
12:48I didn't.
12:48Plus money on the over.
12:50Probably not.
12:50Let me take a look here.
12:52Where's the,
12:52where's the juice?
12:53I'll chase the juice.
12:54Okay.
12:55It is.
12:56It's close.
12:57Minus one Oh five on the over minus one 16 on the under.
13:00Yeah.
13:01Over.
13:01You're going over.
13:02Yeah.
13:02That's what I want.
13:03Okay.
13:04Uh,
13:04six,
13:04one,
13:05seven,
13:05seven,
13:05seven,
13:05nine,
13:06seven,
13:0693,
13:07seven.
13:09Schlittler.
13:09What did he say again?
13:10Put Christmas trees on top of cars.
13:11Yeah.
13:12It's a good game.
13:13Very helpful.
13:13Although did you like verify that Robert?
13:15Did he just tell you that?
13:16Cause he'll also tell you he's from downtown Boston.
13:18Maybe he's just a liar.
13:19There's a bit of a,
13:20uh,
13:20uh,
13:21Bill Chisholm thing going on with him,
13:22quite frankly.
