00:00In 1849, on the Pacific Islands, Adam Ewing, under his father-in-law's influence, signs a
00:10contract with the Reverend Hero to supervise his human trafficking business. Afterward,
00:14Ewing takes a walk through Hero's fields where he's bewildered by the harsh conditions. He
00:20observes one of the slaves named Atua being whipped. While enduring the intense pain of the
00:24whip, Atua's eyes meet with Ewing's, leaving a profound impact on the latter, leading him to
00:30faint. Ewing awakens in a room with Dr. Henry Goose, who deceitfully convinces Ewing that he is
00:35infected with a deadly parasite. Offering a supposed cure, Goose administers a poison instead.
00:40An unsuspecting Ewing expresses gratitude, not realizing that Goose is a con man. When Goose
00:46uncovers Ewing's chest to see the key to his treasure box, a prominent birthmark resembling
00:51a shooting star can be seen on Ewing's chest. In Cambridge, 1936, Robert Frobisher, who has a
00:57birthmark identical to Ewing's on his lower back, awakens beside his lover Rufus, Sixsmith. Debt
01:03forces Frobisher to flee from his persistent creditors. Relying on his musical prowess, he
01:08works for Vivian Aris, a renowned aging composer. In 1973, in San Francisco, Louisa Ray finds herself
01:15stuck in an elevator with an older Rufus Sixsmith, who's a nuclear physicist. As the heat
01:20intensifies, Louisa removes her jacket, revealing a birthmark on her shoulder. Sixsmith remarks
01:26on it, mentioning that he once knew a dear person to him with the same birthmark. Eventually,
01:31the power is restored and they leave the elevator. In 2012, London, publisher Timothy Cavendish
01:37meets with his author, Dermot Huggins, at a fancy event. Huggins, disgruntled by a critic's
01:42harsh review of his book, reacts impulsively, hurling the critic out of a window. The shocking
01:47incident unexpectedly boosts the book's sales. However, Huggins' relatives, seeking their
01:51share of the profits, break into Cavendish's home, threatening him. In the dystopian future
01:56of 2144, in Neo Soul, an archivist thanks an imprisoned woman named Sonmi 451 for agreeing
02:03to conduct one last interview. The archivist starts by asking her to describe what a typical
02:07day for her as a fabricant was like. In response to the archivist's inquiry, Sonmi begins to
02:13describe her life. In Papa Song's dinery, her days are filled with monotonous tasks and harsh
02:18conditions, including customer abuse. Despite this, she can't complain due to the customer-first
02:23policy. The fabricants serve, clean, and fulfill other duties, all while being prohibited from
02:28thinking or feeling. They're led to believe that if they endure, they'll ascend to a better life
02:33through a process called exaltation. In the year 2321, in a post-apocalyptic Hawaii, Zachary is
02:40haunted by a monstrous apparition that tells him to hide instead of helping his friend
02:44from getting murdered by the cannibalistic tribe called the Kona. Meanwhile, Meranim,
02:48a woman from a more advanced civilization, arrives and is welcomed by Zachary's tribe.
02:53However, he remains wary of her. Meranim reveals her purpose for visiting Zachary's land,
02:58telling him that she needs a guide to Mauna Soul. Despite the inherent dangers of the journey,
03:03Zachary agrees. In a state of desperation, Timothy Cavendish seeks financial aid from his wealthy
03:08brother, Denholm, who reluctantly promises to finance Timothy's stay at a hotel, providing him
03:13a safe haven while he gathers the money for him. While traveling home on a ship, Ewing is visited in
03:18his quarters by Atua. Having escaped the slave fields, Atua seeks Ewing's aid, hoping he could
03:23convince the captain to employ him. Touched by Atua's plight, Ewing persuades the ship's captain to give
03:28him a chance. This enables Atua to prove he's a great sailor by impressing everyone on board with how
03:33skillfully he navigates the sails as he lowers them. His exceptional abilities earn him a place
03:38among the crew. Trusting Ray's journalistic integrity, Sixsmith calls her in the middle of
03:43the night, hinting at possessing confidential information too sensitive to discuss over the
03:47phone. Ray decides to meet him in person. However, before she can reach him, Sixsmith is murdered in
03:52his hotel room. Despite being the creative force behind Aerie's musical masterpieces, Frobisher receives
03:57no credit. Yet, he finds solace in the luxurious life he gets to lead and the fact that he gets to create
04:02music for a living. During the work hours at Papa Songs, the rebellious Yuna 939, who is a close
04:08friend of Sonmi, confronts an abusive customer before attempting to escape. Sadly, her attempt
04:13is quickly thwarted and she is killed as all fabricants have collars around their necks that
04:17could be triggered in a moment by their employers. While heading to the hotel, Cavendish walks by the
04:22house of Ursula, an old love interest that he's been too afraid to reconnect with. This brings back
04:26memories of the moment they made love in her bedroom, only for her parents to walk in on them,
04:30causing him to fall out of the window. In this memory, the same remarkable birthmark can be seen
04:35on Cavendish's calf. In the midst of the night, Sonmi finds a stranger who introduces himself as
04:40Heiju Chang, who reveals that he is there to liberate her. The same birthmark can also be
04:45seen once Sonmi's collar is removed, freeing her from her employer's control. Flunted by his brother,
04:50Cavendish arrives at a hotel and signs a contract for a stay. Later, he is startled to learn that he has
04:55unknowingly committed himself to a nursing home. He contacts his brother who confesses that this is
04:59revenge for Cavendish's past infidelities with his wife. While investigating Sixsmith's murder,
05:04Rey visits the Seaboard Corporation. After a brief conversation with Lloyd Hooks, who runs the company,
05:09she notices an office door with Sixsmith's name on it, seemingly scraped off. Upon entering,
05:14she is found by Isaac Sachs, an engineer for the company. Feeling a strong connection to Rey for
05:18some unknown reason, Sachs decides to help her. He reveals that he has managed to preserve a copy of
05:23a crucial report. Explaining the grave state of the world to Sonmi, Chang emphasizes her role as
05:28humanity's last hope. Unfortunately, their mission is hindered by the relentless pursuit of the
05:33Enforcers. In a daring escape across a narrow bridge, Chang valiantly defends Sonmi. Tragically,
05:38Chang is defeated during the skirmish and falls off the bridge. Subsequently, Sonmi is apprehended.
05:43In the dead of night, a notice slipped under Cavendish's door, leading him to discover a rebellion
05:47brewing among three other residents who are planning an escape. As Frobisher plays a captivating melody,
05:52the Cloud Atlas sextant, Ayers audaciously tries to claim the composition as his own.
05:57Ayers then attempts to extort control over Frobisher, threatening to ruin his reputation
06:01by exposing his bisexuality. This culminates in Frobisher stealing Ayers' gun one night and later
06:07shooting him in the abdomen. After handing over the report to Rey, Sachs is murdered in a plane
06:11explosion. Shortly after, Rey's car is forced off a bridge into the ocean. As she ascends the treacherous
06:16slopes of Mauna Sol, Maradheim slips. Despite the monstrous apparition urging Zachary to let her fall,
06:22he overcomes his fears and pulls her to safety. Upon reaching the summit, they discover a chilling
06:27sight, a room filled with corpses. It's here that Maradheim reveals a shocking truth to Zachary.
06:32She shows him footage of Sonmi 451, revealing that contrary to Zachary's tribal beliefs,
06:37Sonmi was not a deity but a fabricant, merely a clone created for servitude who rebelled against
06:42her creators in a fight for freedom. This revelation shakes Zachary's faith to its core,
06:47as he always thought Sonmi was an actual goddess. Afterward, Maradheim completes her mission,
06:52which is to send a message to creatures on another planet in hopes of finding a new home,
06:56away from Earth's hazardous atmosphere. On the ship, Ewing's health declines due to Goose's poison.
07:01Suspicious, Atua breaks into the room and discovers Goose's treachery. A fight ensues culminating in a
07:06severely ill Ewing killing Goose. Once recovered, Ewing finally returns home to his beloved wife.
07:11Waking up in her drowning car, Rey narrowly escapes death by swimming out of the sinking vehicle.
07:16She then learns from Seaboard's head of security the chilling truth behind Sixsmith's murder.
07:21Sixsmith had become aware of a dangerous conspiracy involving a nuclear reactor
07:25operated by the Seaboard Corporation. The scheme was orchestrated by Lloyd Hooks to suppress
07:30information about critical design flaws in the reactor that could lead to a nuclear catastrophe.
07:35As Sonmi is being transferred, a rebel guard eliminates the others and rescues her,
07:39revealing himself to be Chang, having somehow survived his fall.
07:42To reveal the full truth to Sonmi, Chang shows her the gruesome reality behind exultation.
07:47Far from the paradise they were promised, the ascended fabricants meet a brutal end.
07:51Their bodies are processed into food, served to the living fabricants as a cost-effective protein
07:56source. Having survived being shot, Ayers calls the police on Frobisher, who has since been on the run.
08:01Frobisher's face is plastered across the newspapers. Upon reading about Frobisher's predicament,
08:05Sixsmith rushes to the hotel where he's rumored to be hiding.
08:08Despite being enthused to see Sixsmith, Frobisher spots him first and decides against meeting him,
08:13fearing the potential consequences for Sixsmith. However, Sixsmith, undeterred and driven by
08:18concern, proceeds to find Frobisher's hotel room. As he rushes up the stairs, he hears the chilling
08:23sound of a gunshot. Heartbreakingly, Sixsmith enters the room to find Frobisher lifeless in the
08:27bathtub, having taken his own life. Sixsmith then discovers a suicide letter from Frobisher, a detailed
08:33confession of the events that led to this tragic moment and a declaration of his undying love for
08:38Sixsmith. In the nursing home, a cunning escape plan is executed by the four elderly rebels.
08:43They commandeer a nurse's car, crashing through the gates. They head to a local bar where Mr. Meeks,
08:48typically mute due to a speech impediment, delivers an impassioned speech. This incites the bar patrons
08:53to brawl with the home workers, providing the diversion needed for the rebels to make their final escape.
08:57In the stillness of Chang's slumber, Sonmi finds tranquility, her head nestled on his slow beating
09:02heart. Unfortunately, their peace doesn't last long, as soon after, a fierce battle ensues between
09:07the outnumbered Union, who's fighting for freedom, and the formidable Enforcers. Despite their resilience
09:12and unwavering belief in their cause, the Union succumbs. Sonmi, a silent observer to the tragic
09:18spectacle, watches as her companions, including her beloved Chang, falls one by one. The battle
09:23culminates with her capture. Upon descending from Mauna's soul, Zachary is startled by a
09:27war cry emanating from his village. Rushing back, he is met with a scene of devastation.
09:32His tribe has been decimated, his sister among the casualties. Thankfully, his niece has managed
09:36to survive. Suddenly, the Kona tribe members descend upon them. Thinking they might be doomed,
09:41Zachary is rescued at the last moment by Maranim. A chaotic fight ensues, during which Zachary is
09:46wounded. Nonetheless, they manage to defeat the Kona and escape. Maranim takes him and his niece to her
09:51land, where they get to live among her welcoming tribe. Having reunited with his wife, Tilda, Ewing
09:56confronts her father, Haskell Moore. In a moment of defiance, Ewing burns a contract he had signed,
10:01symbolizing his rejection of Moore's oppressive business practices. Tilda, in a courageous
10:06confession, admits to her father that she has only ever been afraid of him. Despite Moore's
10:10disapproval, Ewing and Tilda declare their intention to move east and join the abolitionist movement.
10:15After meeting Sixsmith's niece, Ray procures the crucial evidence to unmask the Seaboard Corporation.
10:19She publishes an exposƩ and the nefarious activities of the corporation are brought to light,
10:24leading to the halting of the construction of the dangerous nuclear plant. Having escaped the
10:27nursing home, Cavendish rekindles his youthful romance with Ursula and his newfound courage
10:32inspires him to pen his memoirs. Now that her interview is concluded,
10:35Sonmi is transferred to a different chamber. The Neo-Soul leaders observe as she faces her fate
10:39with a sense of fulfillment. Her execution unfolds, marking the end of her journey, but not before she
10:44has revealed the truth to the world. In the distant future, on a safer planet, an elderly Zachary
10:49narrates tales from his life to his captivated grandchildren. As he points out Earth among
10:53the celestial bodies, a shooting star birthmark can be seen on his head, signifying a profound
10:57connection to his ancestors. Upon returning to their dwelling, their grandmother, Maranime,
11:02emerges to usher the children inside. When asked by his grandchild if he still loves Maranime,
11:07Zachary gazes at her, affirming that she's the best thing that ever happened to him.
