00:00In the heart of the Second World War, Johan Schmidt is on a mission to retrieve a cube-shaped
00:09artifact known as a tesseract. He invades a man's home in Norway and discovers a fake cube,
00:14which he smashes to the ground. He then uncovers a secret button that reveals a drawer containing
00:19the real tesseract. After obtaining the artifact, he kills the man and lays waste to his village.
00:24Steve Rogers, a frail and small man, is rejected from enlisting in the army for the war. In a movie
00:30theater, he attempts to confront a bully, leading to a scuffle in an alley where Rogers, despite his
00:35best efforts with the trash can lid as a shield, is unable to defend himself. His best friend Bucky
00:41comes to his rescue and later takes him to an expo. Despite Bucky's warnings, Rogers insists on trying
00:47to enlist as many times as necessary, driven by his desire to fight for a just cause. As Bucky enjoys
00:53his last night before heading to the military base, he bids Rogers farewell, telling him not to do
00:58anything stupid. Regardless of this, Rogers undergoes another medical examination, during
01:03which Dr. Abraham Erskine enters the room. After asking Rogers a few questions to ascertain his good
01:09nature, the doctor allows him to join the army. Inside Schmidt's lab, biochemist Arnim Zola carefully
01:14studies the tesseract. Once placed inside a device and activated, he missed a burst of energy,
01:20impressing Schmidt and affirming his belief in Zola's capabilities. At the military base,
01:25Rogers, looking diminutive compared to everyone else, meets Officer Margaret Carter before undergoing
01:30rigorous training, where he continues to get bullied by the other soldiers. During a contest
01:35to retrieve a flag from a pole, Rogers waits for all the other contenders to fight over it and fail
01:39to reach it before cleverly removing the pole's hinge to allow the flag to fall down to him. This
01:44causes Carter to be impressed with his ingenuity. In another test of character, Colonel Phillips throws
01:49a dummy grenade causing the entire platoon to scatter and hide, except for Rogers, who jumps on it to
01:55absorb the explosion and protect the others. In the dorm, Erskine explains to Rogers that he was chosen
02:00for his good heart, which he believes will not change even after the experimental operation they're
02:05about to perform on him to give him superhuman strength. He further explains that Johann Schmidt is
02:10a product of a failed experiment which only amplified his inherent evil, a problem he doesn't
02:15foresee with Rogers due to his inherent virtue. The next day, Rogers is accompanied by Carter in a
02:21car. His struggle to converse with her reveals his innocence, which, along with his clever and
02:25courageous acts so far, has made her grow fond of him. After arriving at a secret facility, Rogers is
02:31placed inside a pod where he is injected with several vials of a serum and exposed to Vita rays,
02:36designed to stimulate incredibly rapid muscle growth. As the process begins, he screams in pain.
02:41Despite Carter and Erskine wanting to shut it down due to his apparent distress, Rogers insists that
02:46he can handle it, prompting them to increase the power to 100%, causing a power surge in the room.
02:51The process completes and Rogers emerges from the pod, transformed into a much more muscular man.
02:56After Rogers' transformation, a spy infiltrates the facility, steals a vial of the serum, and
03:01assassinates Erskine. Carter pursues the spy, shooting the driver of the getaway car. The spy
03:06commandeers the vehicle and attempts to run over Carter, but Rogers, with his newfound strength,
03:11saves her. He chases the spy's car on foot, using a car door as a shield against the spy's gunfire.
03:16The spy takes the child hostage, but when his gun runs out of bullets,
03:20he throws the child into the water. The boy assures Rogers that he can swim,
03:24urging him to continue the pursuit. The spy escapes into a submarine, but Rogers dives in after him,
03:29breaks the window, and apprehends him. However, the spy commits suicide using a cyanide capsule,
03:34uttering, Hail Hydra, the name of Schmidt's organization, before dying. Meanwhile, Hitler's soldiers
03:39arrive at Schmidt's facility to assess his progress. Schmidt reveals a weapon that could enable him
03:44to conquer the world. He then kills Hitler's soldiers, demonstrating his disregard for Hitler,
03:49as he plans to destroy Berlin and the rest of the world using the Tesseract's power.
03:53With Erskine's death setting back the research, Rogers is relegated to a performing role,
03:58touring the country as Captain America. However, when he performs for the troops in Italy,
04:02they mock him. Carter visits Rogers after his disappointing performance,
04:06encouraging him that he's meant for more than just being an actor. Upon learning that his friend
04:10Bucky and his platoon have been taken hostage, Rogers decides to undertake a solo mission to
04:15infiltrate Hydra's base and rescue them. With the help of Carter and Engineer Stark,
04:19Rogers is flown and dropped near Hydra's base. He fights his way through the guards, frees the
04:23hostages, and incites a riot. He finds Bucky alive, who is in disbelief at Rogers' transformation.
04:29As the facility self-destructs, Rogers confronts Schmidt. Schmidt reveals that Erskine's experiment on
04:34him was successful in a way, as it gave him superhuman strength but also amplified his evil
04:39tendencies. Schmidt then removes the human mask and reveals his true face, showing a horrific red
04:45skull before escaping in a helicopter. As Bucky and Rogers attempt to escape,
04:49Bucky barely manages to cross a collapsing bridge. With no other option, Rogers attempts a daring jump
04:55across the blazing chasm. Back at the military base, Phillips momentarily believes Rogers didn't
05:00survive. However, Carter remains hopeful. Eventually, Rogers returns with the rescued soldiers and
05:06everyone cheers for him. Now recognized as a national hero and a celebrity, Rogers finds himself the
05:11center of attention, particularly from women. This newfound fame leads to an awkward encounter when
05:16Carter walks in on him kissing another woman, despite his previous assertions of waiting for the
05:20right partner, playfully questioning if Rogers is just like every other man. Stark presents Rogers with
05:25several options for a shield, and he selects one made of vibranium. To test its effectiveness,
05:30Carter fires bullets at Rogers, which the shield successfully deflects. Under Rogers' leadership,
05:35the army begins to make significant inroads into Schmidt's territory. Their next mission involves
05:39using a zip line to infiltrate a moving train. Inside the train, Bucky and Rogers are separated into
05:45different cars. Schmidt's soldiers, armed with powerful cannons, attack them. In the ensuing chaos,
05:49Bucky is shot out of the side of the train and falls to his death. Despite this loss,
05:54Rogers manages to win the battle and take Zola into custody. After interrogating Zola,
05:58Phillips realizes that Schmidt is planning an offensive. They must invade his main base before
06:03Schmidt launches his attack. Meanwhile, Schmidt prepares his full army for the impending battle.
06:08Carter meets with Rogers in a demolished house to console him about the loss of his best friend
06:13and promises to help him get his revenge against Schmidt. With Zola revealing Schmidt's location,
06:17Rogers devises a plan to invade Hydra's main base. He heads there alone on a motorbike,
06:22skillfully fighting off soldiers and using his shield to launch surprise attacks. However,
06:27he eventually finds himself outnumbered and surrounded by flamethrower-wielding soldiers.
06:32He is captured and brought before Schmidt, who derides him as arrogant before starting to punch him.
06:36Just as Schmidt is about to shoot Rogers, the rest of his team enter the room by using grapple
06:41hooks, saving Rogers and revealing that this was all part of his plan to invade Schmidt's base.
06:46As Rogers makes his way through the hallways, a soldier with the flamethrower attacks him,
06:50but Carter is there to help him. Schmidt boards his plane, heading to New York with the plan of
06:54dropping a bomb on it. Rogers chases, but is unable to reach the plane in time. Luckily,
06:58Phillips and Carter take him in a car, managing to slide under the plane, allowing Rogers to jump
07:03onto and enter it. Inside, he finds smaller planes labeled with city names like Chicago and New York,
07:09realizing they're bombing the US. He fights off a few soldiers while ejecting empty planes and enemies
07:14from the plane. As the New York plane is dispatched, Roger hangs onto it, ejects the pilot,
07:19and takes it over. A fight between Rogers and Schmidt ensues while the airplane is on autopilot to New
07:24York. As he's being shot at, Rogers throws his shield at Schmidt, causing the Tesseract to be
07:29released from its device. When Schmidt holds the cube, it destroys him as it shoots a beam up into
07:34space. Rogers is then forced to land the plane in the water to prevent it from exploding into New
07:38York. He places Carter's photo in front of him and starts crashing it down. Through the radio,
07:43he talks to Carter, who assures him that he's going to be okay. During this moment of distress,
07:47the two set up a date, with Carter finally sharing her feelings for Rogers. As Rogers responds,
07:52he suddenly cuts out mid-sentence as he crashes down into the icy waters. As the nation celebrates
07:57their victory and the Tesseract is retrieved, the army keeps searching for Rogers, with everyone
08:01accepting his probable death but still hoping he's somehow alive. Rogers regains consciousness in a
08:06recovery room in New York City. Despite assurances that everything is normal, he recognizes the
08:11baseball game, supposedly playing live on the radio as he had attended that very game. Panicked,
08:16he flees the room, only to find himself in present-day New York. He is approached by Nick Fury,
08:21who reveals that he has been in a slumber for nearly 70 years. The news leaves Rogers stunned
08:26and deeply saddened, particularly at the thought of missing his date with Carter.
