00:00The film begins with the Norwegian chopper pursuing and shooting at a dog as it runs
00:04towards the US research station.
00:06At the station, the team's pilot, MacReady, plays a chess game against the computer, confidently
00:10sipping his drink.
00:11He boasts about winning, only to be shocked when the computer makes a surprising move
00:15and wins.
00:16Feeling cheated, MacReady pours his drink into the computer's wiring, destroying it.
00:20The sound of a chopper alerts Mac and his team, prompting them to run outside to investigate.
00:24After the chopper lands, the pilot accidentally drops a grenade, killing himself and exploding
00:28the chopper.
00:29Another man, shooting at the dog, speaks to Mac and his team frantically in a foreign
00:33language and continues shooting at the dog.
00:35He shoots the team's meteorologist, George Bennings, in the lap and continues chasing
00:39after the dog but is killed by the station commander, Gary.
00:43While the team's doctor, Copper, stitches up Bennings's bullet wound, Bennings asks him
00:47why the men were shooting at the dog and them.
00:49The doctor suggests that they may be experiencing cabin fever.
00:52Windows, the radio operator, attempts to contact anyone from the outside but receives no response.
00:57The senior biologist, Blair, urges him to try harder.
01:00But Windows, frustratingly remarks that he has been trying to reach someone for the past
01:04two weeks with no luck.
01:05Wondering why the Norwegians attacked them, Gary asks how long they've been stationed at
01:09their base.
01:10Fuchs, the assistant biologist, replies that they've been there for roughly eight weeks.
01:14Bennings asserts that it is not a long enough time for someone to go crazy, but Halls asserts
01:18that five minutes is enough for someone to lose their mind at the outpost.
01:21McCready and Copper fly to the Norwegian base to investigate what might have happened and
01:26check for survivors.
01:27Upon reaching the Norwegian base, they discover the facility deserted and in ruins.
01:31While exploring, they come across a tomb-like structure that appears to have been broken
01:35open.
01:36On their way out, they discover a creature partly buried in the snow.
01:39They dig it out and bring it back to their base for examination.
01:41After they return to the camp, Copper asks Blair to conduct an autopsy on it.
01:45Blair cuts through the thing and declares that he sees a normal set of human organs.
01:49The new dog startles Bennings as he plays cards with Norris and Gary.
01:52He instructs Clark to put the dog in the kennel.
01:55Clark takes the dog to the kennel, where the other dogs are.
01:58Upon reaching the kennel, Clark opens the door for the dog to enter, but it seems reluctant
02:02and he urges it to go in.
02:03A few seconds after entering the kennel, the new dog transforms into a bizarre creature, attacking
02:08the other dogs.
02:09It backfires shots at it, but it doesn't make any impact.
02:12Childs arrives with a flame flower and burns it.
02:14After examining the intestines of the dog, now transformed into a thing, Blair discovers
02:18an organism that mimics other life forms.
02:21He informs the team that when the thing attacked the dogs, it attempted to absorb and imitate
02:25them.
02:26However, they intervened before he could complete the imitation process.
02:29Later, Blair isolates himself to study the cells of the thing and its ability to simulate
02:34other life forms.
02:35He learns that the chances that they are infected by the organism are high and that it could potentially
02:39infect the entire world population within a few hours of first contact.
02:43Fuchs asks to speak privately with Mac.
02:45He informs Mac that something is up with Blair.
02:48He locked himself in a room and won't open the door.
02:50Fuchs reads to Mac what Blair had jotted down in his notebook, revealing that there is still
02:54cellular activity in the remains of the things they burned with the flamethrower, implying that
02:59they aren't dead.
03:00Windows and Bennings stash the burned remains of the thing in the storeroom, and Windows
03:04leaves to get the keys to the storeroom.
03:06Upon his return, he finds Bennings' clothes ripped and the thing's tentacles wrapped
03:10around Bennings, absorbing him.
03:11He runs out to alert the others.
03:13When they return, they discover that Bennings has broken out of the window.
03:16They chase after him, realizing that the thing has taken over Bennings.
03:20They set him ablaze after which they properly burned the remains of the things they kept in
03:23the lab and storehouse, burying their ashes in the snow.
03:26Blair has a mental breakdown due to his findings about the thing.
03:30He is destroying the computer room while ranting and shooting carelessly at anyone who tries
03:33to come close.
03:34Windows is hurt in the process.
03:36They manage to restrain him and proceed to lock him up in the camp's tool shed, seeing
03:39him as a threat for destroying their chopper, tractor, and computer room.
03:43After some of the team members lock Blair away, they deliberate on identifying who is human
03:47and who might be an imitation.
03:49Mac asks Copper if there is a method to determine that.
03:52Copper suggests conducting a blood serum test, which involves taking a sample of their blood and
03:56mixing it with uncontaminated blood.
03:58Upon reaching the blood bank refrigerator to obtain blood for the serum test, Copper
04:02discovers it has been vandalized.
04:04He calls out to the others and they begin questioning who has access to the refrigerator.
04:07They argue amongst themselves and the team suspects Gary to be responsible for the damage
04:11because he holds the key.
04:13Windows, believing Gary could be one of those things, freaks out and runs off to the weapons
04:17depot.
04:18The others run after him and before he gets a chance to load the gun, Gary points a gun
04:22at him, urging him to drop the gun and he soon obliges.
04:25After the incident, Gary assures him that he didn't destroy the blood and then suggests
04:29someone else take charge and Mac takes over.
04:31Later, they burn the blood bags and Mac instructs Norris and Childs to tie up Copper, Clark and
04:36Gary and sedate them, suspecting them of tampering with the blood as they are the ones who mostly
04:40have access to the refrigerator.
04:42Fuchs is missing and Mac sets up two parties to search for him.
04:45A few minutes into the search, Mac's party discovers Fuchs' body in the snow.
04:49Mac notices the lights in his shack are on, he then instructs Windows to return and inform
04:53the others that they've seen Fuchs while he and Halls goes up to the shack to check
04:57it out.
04:58Halls returns later without Mac and informs the others that he found a ripped shirt with
05:01Mac's name in the shack and suspects that Mac is one of the things, so he cuts him out
05:05of the guideline, leaving him stranded in the storm.
05:08Mac returns a few minutes after Halls and requests they open the door, but they are in a fix, deliberating
05:13whether to open the door or leave him to die outside the storm.
05:16Mac breaks into the house through the storeroom. Childs tries to open the room, but finds that
05:20it is locked, so he breaks the door with an axe.
05:23Upon breaking in, they find Mac holding dynamite and a flare, threatening them to move away from
05:28him.
05:29Halls and Norris attack Mac from behind, but he throws him off to the floor, holding
05:32firmly onto the dynamite and flare in his hand.
05:35Norris suffers a heart attack after the fall and Mac instructs Halls to get Copper.
05:39Copper attempts to revive Norris, triggering Norris' infected body to transform into a vertical
05:43mouth lined with razor sharp teeth. It bites off Copper's hands, causing him to bleed to
05:48death. The rest of Norris' body transforms into a thing, and Mac burns it. Mac directs
05:52Windows and Palmer to tie everyone up for a test. The team, still suspicious of him, opposes
05:57the idea.
05:58Amidst the argument, Clark attempts to stab Mac, who shoots him in defense. The team later
06:02complies, and after trying everyone, including Clark and Copper's bodies, Mac asks Windows
06:07to tie Palmer. Following Norris' transformation, Mac believes that if anybody's blood is contaminated,
06:12and comes into contact with a hot wire or needle, it will react defensively.
06:16After Windows draws everyone's blood sample, his blood is the first to be tested, and he
06:20comes out clean. Mac hands him a flamethrower, instructing him to burn anyone who turns out
06:25to be the thing. When Palmer's blood is tested, it reacts, and Palmer starts transforming
06:29after a seizure. Mac tries to burn him with the flamethrower, but it fails to ignite. He
06:33then directs Windows to burn it. However, Windows is transfixed, and the Palmer thing attacks
06:38him. Mac's flamethrower finally ignites, and he blasts the Palmer thing. It escapes
06:42outside of Belize, with Mac following and blowing it up with dynamite. Upon recognizing
06:46that Windows is infected, Mac burns him too. After eliminating Palmer and Window, Mac continues
06:52the blood test, which reveals the rest of the team is still human. Childs is keeping watch
06:56at the main entrance of the camp, when Mac informs him that they are going to give Blair
06:59the test, instructing him to burn Blair if he happens to return without them. Upon reaching
07:04the shed where Blair is confined, they find the door open and Blair missing, and then they
07:08notice a floor hatch leading to a basement. They search for Blair in the basement and discover
07:12he's building a spaceship. While still at the shed, they spot Childs outside wondering
07:16why he's there. Shortly after, the lights are cut out.
07:19Mac informs Gary and Halls that the thing wants to freeze itself until the rescue team
07:23finds it. So whether they make it or not, they have to blow up some parts to make the
07:27camp warm so the thing won't be able to freeze.
07:29After blowing up the shed and basement and some parts of the main camp, they head to the
07:33generator room to fix the light. When they get to the generator room, they discover
07:37the generator is missing. Mac suggests they blow up the rest of the camp, since they may
07:40not make it out alive after all. Mac assigns areas for Gary and Halls to plant dynamite.
07:45While carrying out the task, the Blair thing attacks Gary, dragging him away. Halls, noticing
07:50the presence of someone, investigates but mysteriously disappears.
07:53Mac realizes he's alone, but senses a presence, and immediately the thing attacks from underground.
07:58Swiftly, Mac throws a lit stick of dynamite at the creature, causing it to explode. The previously
08:03planted dynamite triggers a chain reaction and the entire camp explodes. The film ends with
08:08Mac, sitting by his ruined shack, cold and exhausted, when Child stumbles out of nowhere. Mac asks where
08:14he's been and Child replies that he saw Blair, went after him, and got lost in the blizzard. Child sits
08:19with Mac to wait and see what happens.
