00:00:00I'll be right back.
00:00:30Hello and welcome to Match Week 2 of the Champions League.
00:00:45Over the next hour and 20 minutes, we'll bring you all the goals
00:00:48from the 18 group stage ties played over the last two nights.
00:00:52In the studio, former Manchester United and Newcastle midfielder
00:00:55Nicky Bott, Champions League winner in 1999.
00:00:58Our Champions League analyst Nader Manua and European football expert Rory Smith.
00:01:04First though, Manchester City's trip to Monaco.
00:01:07The only previous meeting between these two came in the last 16 in March 2017
00:01:11when Monaco went through on away goals.
00:01:14Guy Mowbrie watched this one.
00:01:16Eight years ago, it was the season of Mbappe's emergence and Monaco's last league title.
00:01:23City have since won six and been able to call themselves champions of Europe.
00:01:27The Monaco team of today doesn't quite have the names of 2017, but a few familiar ones,
00:01:33particularly Eric Dyer, Tilo Khera and Ansu Fati.
00:01:36For City, Rory starts.
00:01:38And there are two in the team who figured here last time.
00:01:41John Stones and Captain Bernardo Silva, who back then was in the Monaco team that won 3-1.
00:01:47Amidst the choreographed shouts of the home supporters, you can just occasionally hear the strains of Blue Moon.
00:01:56Guardiol, Harland on the run and touching it over Khera to score.
00:02:08His first chance of the match.
00:02:11His 50th game in the Champions League.
00:02:14And a 51st goal in it.
00:02:16Remarkable numbers from an incredible centre forward.
00:02:20Look at the dart.
00:02:22Guardiol knew it was coming.
00:02:25It was all about the timing and technique of the pass after that.
00:02:29Erling Haaland has his 10th goal of the season already.
00:02:31And it's Monaco 0-0, Manchester City 1.
00:02:39There's Diata.
00:02:41Seen plenty of it down the left.
00:02:44That's a good spot.
00:02:46There's Tezze.
00:02:47Oh, it's brilliant.
00:02:49What a strike from Jordan Tezze.
00:02:52It hasn't taken Monaco long at all to reply in style.
00:03:00I think he may have just had a look.
00:03:02Seen Donnarumma's positioning slightly to the left of centre.
00:03:05The weight going that way maybe.
00:03:07Still, special strike to beat him from there, to beat anyone from there.
00:03:13Manchester City having to work her way through them.
00:03:17Having to think about it.
00:03:18Foden.
00:03:19Great effort, Foden.
00:03:21Keeper well beaten.
00:03:24I think the bar stopped shaking, but only just after Foden's rattler.
00:03:29Terrific effort.
00:03:31Stones, Bernardo Silva.
00:03:36Chance now for Reinders.
00:03:37Chance for Haaland.
00:03:40Neither could be taken.
00:03:43Reinders' snapshot.
00:03:44Kerr couldn't hold it.
00:03:46Did at least get it far enough out on the angle to make it that bit harder for Haaland.
00:03:50Foden.
00:03:55Foden.
00:03:58O'Reilly.
00:04:00Haaland!
00:04:00Just terrific.
00:04:06it's not a full chance maybe a three-quarter opportunity for most strikers look at the
00:04:13movement of Haaland in front of two past Watara he saw of Salisa as well and all the time he was
00:04:21doing that he was focused on the ball's flight and what he had to do with it next as ever he did it
00:04:28to the letter Watara Balogun plenty more involvement for him since half-time held it up really well
00:04:41Ansu Fati finds Magnus Akliuj and Akliuj found a way through the goal
00:04:48good reaction save from Donnarumma Akliuj may have caught him out with the timing of the shot
00:04:58Foden that's a beautiful headed touch onto Savinho
00:05:04Savinho pulls back Rinders has it and Rinders oh he's hit the bar
00:05:11that was almost certain he was going to hit the roof of the net
00:05:21that's going to be a free kick for Monaco
00:05:28top of the player brought down
00:05:33Monaco are giving this a real go in the closing stages Akliuj is at the back of this Dier gets to
00:05:39it in the middle and Dier's hurt him trying to head past Donnarumma look at him charging into the pack
00:05:46determined to get there the boot came up from Nico Gonzalez and that's going to be looked at by VAR
00:05:55he's going to look and I think we know he's going to give it
00:06:01what's happening here Donnarumma is getting a bit involved unnecessarily well that's the freeze frame that the referee is greeted with
00:06:10as it all kicks off around him he should be focused on the screen and the screen alone but he's
00:06:15not being allowed to where has this come from Manchester City were
00:06:20if not cruising then certainly on their way pretty comfortably to three points
00:06:26red card there's a red card of peace there shown to the benches I think
00:06:30he's got to get this right he has to be absolutely sure and he is it's going to be given Monaco have
00:06:42the chance to draw themselves level and deny Manchester City the victory that's looked likely
00:06:47for much of the evening and it's Eric Dier who's going to step up with the responsibility for Monaco
00:06:54and Dier does it
00:07:01an Englishman on the field for the French team to deny the visitors from England
00:07:09three points Monaco two Manchester City two
00:07:14it was a really good game so make some decisions we create a lot of chances unfortunately at the end
00:07:22we defend an unfair free kick um not perfectly and and we're going to see the penalty that touches
00:07:30the ball first for the inners touch the opponent but touch the ball no intention but uh yeah it's where
00:07:36it is I think we need more energy we need to get at them more as we did in the first hour we dominated
00:07:41much more and now in the second half they they took the lead much more and I don't think it's good
00:07:46enough we were a bit frustrated at the end because everything seemed seemed it was going against us
00:07:51and um but yeah you have days like this it's football and now on to the next one there was definitely
00:07:57contact with my face I I don't know if you've seen it but I think it depends a bit on that where
00:08:01the height of my head is you know but yeah there was obviously there was definitely contact and um
00:08:06no and then we're happy we're happy to get the point and to to get the goal at the end
00:08:12well on the plus side for Manchester City is that it was another couple of goals for Erling Haaland
00:08:17that now takes him to 52 goals in his first 50 games in the Champions League which is more
00:08:22than nine clubs managed in their first 50 games in the Champions League but Nadim he's being helped
00:08:28by the creativity behind him particularly from Phil Foden yeah absolutely is I think some of the games
00:08:33that City have had in recent times they've gone up against really dogged defenses sometimes playing
00:08:37three at the back and I think he's been that little bit of magic that can sort of create opportunities
00:08:41for others and it's good to see him in that form because two years ago you know this is one of the
00:08:44best players in the Premier League but last year he wasn't his usual self but as we can see from some
00:08:48of these clips here it's his ability to be surrounded by players find that space and then get on the
00:08:52half turn I think that's the thing that's major and here even going on to his right side it's a very good
00:08:57strike he's disappointed that maybe that hasn't gone in but he's persistent with it he sees the space and look how
00:09:01many players he's surrounded by but he's constantly looking for the ball and as soon as that half turn
00:09:05comes it's the link up and that one wasn't the best example from Erling Haaland in terms of his link-up
00:09:09play but Foden remains the same you give the ball to him in those in those sorts of areas he's going
00:09:14to try and find an outcome whether it's a cross it's a shot it's a pass he wants to have a big influence
00:09:18on the game itself and he's relentless with that in these tight areas not every player is good at being
00:09:22able to find space but he will find that himself and he has to touch his the technique and the ability to go
00:09:27and really make a difference for City because there'll be so many games like this where you
00:09:31know you have to make some of these little decisions like good bits of play and it's good ball into the
00:09:36box by the way this header wowsers but Phil Foden himself it's good to see him back to the form that
00:09:41we saw two years ago and it's such an important year for him given the fact that he woke up in the
00:09:44summer as well Nicky what about the the penalty incident there was a little bit of of controversy
00:09:49around it but did City have to put themselves in that position no they didn't I think it's a bit
00:09:54lazy from the defenders I think Dyer's made a really strong aggressive run from the deep and the
00:09:59defenders have just let him just bully them and they've put a lazy little foot up into the air
00:10:03you see you can see there he starts deep he runs from deep and it is really aggressive and the defenders
00:10:08just lazy put the foot up and it's really stupid I don't think there's much contact but it's a really
00:10:12stupid thing to do and it's such a big game in the box the last few minutes they're going to give a
00:10:17penalty for that there's no doubt about that so there's there's no doubt about the the decision as far
00:10:21as you're concerned not for me no you can say not much contact to it but just that picture there
00:10:25alone you've got to see that for one second on the screen it's a penalty in European football
00:10:30and that meant that it was it was just a point for Manchester City having looked like they were
00:10:34going to go on and maybe even add to their their lead at that point but it's not just this game in
00:10:40context that's a year since they've won away from home in the in the Champions League is this a
00:10:45repeating of old patterns Rory or is this a one-off from this season I think you can probably see it both
00:10:49ways can't you it looks to me like City generally are kind of inching their way back into into
00:10:54something approaching what they were I don't think they'll ever be quite as dominant as the hundred
00:10:58point side or the formidables or you know some of the truly great Guardiola City sides but there are
00:11:02signs Foden's quite a good example of it that Pep's trying to find in a way again look Monaco are
00:11:08it's the Champions League Monaco are a good team if you make a mistake as Nicky says then you'll get
00:11:12punished four points from two games having played the Italian champions that's not that's not bad
00:11:17yeah are they growing into this season do you think Nadem yeah I would say so I think there was
00:11:21that point when they lost two games in a row and it felt like it was the middle of last season again
00:11:25where they were sort of showing some real significant weaknesses but I think for this game itself I
00:11:28think we heard with the interviews Harland himself saying that they didn't really have the tempo in
00:11:32the second half but it's not to say that they lost control of the game but when you don't put teams
00:11:36away especially in Europe you know it's away from home these moments can happen and the fact it
00:11:40happened to Eric Diaz someone that's so familiar one thing I'd say is good seeing Englishmen scoring penalties you know
00:11:44maybe it's a sign don't let's look too far ahead
00:11:49Nicky talking about about looking ahead though if you're planning and you're plotting a season in
00:11:54which you're going to be competing on several fronts is it okay to start not quite at full throttle is it
00:12:00okay to build into the season yeah it certainly is I think Pep's very experienced you know what
00:12:05he's doing is folding's looking like the player that we all love to see and watch uh Harland's doing
00:12:10what he's doing Roger will get there after a few more months he's had a massive long injury he's
00:12:15going to take time um but I think it's important that you're staying around there keep your squad
00:12:19fit get stronger and stronger as you go on get through the new year and I think that's when the
00:12:23real the real games start coming then yeah at this stage on the 1st of October would you as in that
00:12:28Manchester United squad would you be panicking just yet no you wouldn't panic everyone wants to win the games and
00:12:33everyone's go away and get all that adulation of what a great team you are but it's not it's not
00:12:37normal to keep doing that for year on year on they've done it so many years man city now and
00:12:40they're having a bit of a struggle over the last couple of years but they've got players that can
00:12:43really turn games and they're the ones that win you the big competitions winning the big trophies and
00:12:47they'll be there about so just got to get the strength together get the squad together and be fit
00:12:51coming into the new year now after a dramatic weekend in the premier league arsenal welcomed greek
00:12:57champions olympiacos to the emirates steve wilson was there olympiacos are surely the only club in the
00:13:05world right now who can boast of having won each of their last three games at the emirates against
00:13:10arsenal those victories coming in 2015 2020 and 2021 nicole arteta makes six changes to the 11 which
00:13:19started the match day one win in bilbao in come white saliba louis skelly urdegaard trossard and
00:13:26martinelli olympiacos drew at home to 10-man pathos on match day one their manager jose luis mendilibar
00:13:35like archeta from the basque country of spain makes three changes to that 11.
00:13:39taffy tryer turned into a good ball actually for urdegaard who
00:13:48flunked it away to lewis skelly
00:13:52lewis skelly's ball in martinelli
00:13:57well what an opportunity that is inside two minutes
00:14:01looks onside martinelli misjudged it came off his shoulder
00:14:10urdegaard skipping away from red sauce it's jokeres who stays on his feet
00:14:22and it's hit the post and gone in from martinelli
00:14:29arsenal in front gabriel martinelli with the goal
00:14:35odegaard inevitably involved with a really good ball jokeres used his pace and strength well
00:14:41martinelli seemed keen that jokeres should score waited to see what was happening to
00:14:46his effort but when it rebounded off the post tucked it in for 1-0
00:14:55olympiacos are yet to lose a game this season it's a 12-match unbeaten run stretching into the
00:15:02last campaign
00:15:07costinha into the path of cecchino his ball in pudents that's an extraordinary save
00:15:13from david raya goodness me this is outstanding goalkeeping it's a great ball in pudents meets it
00:15:22beautifully on the volley and he has to think it's going into the roof of the net extraordinary
00:15:28saved by david raya panchos maranac is here owner of course of olympiacos as well as nottingham forest
00:15:38urdegaard great ball brilliant
00:15:41jokeres martinelli to his right he won't use him and he won't score either it's a great recovery by
00:15:47pirola but a brilliant ball by urdegaard they've got so many great players in their ranks at arsenal
00:15:55but for me urdegaard is still the best
00:16:08urdegaard white
00:16:12martinelli this is going to take a with him white in support
00:16:17now it's ben white and michael marino and trossard wide of the target
00:16:29plenty of patience from arsenal and patience is a virtue
00:16:32it's always getting the shot on target and trossard didn't
00:16:35if they don't win this game he's going to be seriously annoying
00:16:42nice
00:16:48great ball that urdegaard turning away from santiago it's it
00:16:53martin urdegaard four in this arsenal attack urdegaard trossard trossard great block
00:16:59this is as threatening as arsenal have been in the second half really
00:17:12chopped inside trossard must have thought he was going to score there
00:17:14prudence four in the box prudence delivers and a great save by david ryan it's plugged in and flags up
00:17:26doesn't count
00:17:27ayubel carby put it in the back of the net but it's not going to count
00:17:32prudence with the ball in yeah it's offside
00:17:34it'll carby in the middle of your shot there offside
00:17:48lovely ball is a for saka
00:17:52saka running ortega here getting to the byline and urdegaard a remarkable let off
00:17:59well david ryan made a great save in that net in the first half
00:18:05solakis might just have topped it this looked like two nil all night long
00:18:11and cospentino solakis has kept it out maybe with a bit of help from retzos but they kept it out
00:18:18arsenal have been below par tonight you can't get away from that however if they win the game
00:18:24they won't worry zubimendi lovely ball for kaya saka here
00:18:34skelly back to saka
00:18:38odegaard lovely ball saka it's gone in
00:18:43straight through konstantino solakis and the game is safe in stoppage time thanks to bukayo saka
00:18:51urdegaard with the right pass and saka straight through the legs
00:18:59of solakis arsenal two olympiakos nil and it's two wins from two for nicole arteta's side
00:19:09we have a a really good group and a big one now and it's good for for the club
00:19:15we want to win every title that we're playing and yeah this is what we're going to try to do
00:19:19well very happy obviously with the win and the clean sheet against as we predicted a very tough
00:19:24opponent i think we started the game very very good um score the goal had some big chances that
00:19:31in the champions league you don't put them away after you're going to suffer and then we had a
00:19:35period in the game we became a little bit open we needed a big save from david in one action to
00:19:40to keep the clean sheet but overall after played after three days and the game that we had to play
00:19:45newcastle uh great to the boys the way we performed well come on to that clean sheet that michael arteta
00:19:51was was so pleased about in just a second but let's talk more creatively about arsenal and the
00:19:56importance of martin odegaard nicky yeah i mean we're highlighting here how he's affects that football
00:20:01club and that football team he's not played for two and a half week um and he finds the spaces like
00:20:06nobody else can do and the area he gets into the midfielders are going to really find it hard to find
00:20:11him he's creeping behind him he gets on the ball the one thing he's got in mind he's afraid they've
00:20:16played the forward through play that forward pass he's running on and he's unfortunate there gets
00:20:20off the post and they get the goal but it all comes from odegaard's space how he finds the space here
00:20:25he looks all their midfielders there they're all looking at the ball ball watching and allowing him
00:20:28to get onto the ball and when he gets the ball and faces you up you're in big trouble and straight here
00:20:33now he's onto the back four he's passing little past this ball to the left and to the right
00:20:37creating chances he's just a complete player for me and he makes that team tick and when he plays
00:20:43and plays well arsenal usually win and all all the things he's doing here he's looking straight away
00:20:49forward with his eyes looking where's the man going where's the man going you know he gets the ball
00:20:52faces it up and is straight down the side all he wants to do is afford to run straight through there
00:20:57and get onto the goal it's going through one-on-one and that's all you can ask for as a number 10 he gets
00:21:01on the ball it creates chances he creates passes through here the role that he does here the strength
00:21:07his shows against the defender and he runs through there and a little nice little weighted pass and
00:21:11he should really score here but everything he's done tonight for me was top top drawing you talk
00:21:16about folding for city he's their equivalent he's there he's their match winner he's the one that can
00:21:20create chances and score goals and it's no coincidence that when arsenal have maybe been criticized for
00:21:25not going for games enough that they're missing martin odegaard in in those in those matches yeah i think
00:21:30any team in the world would meet him sorry miss him when he's playing that well you know you talk about
00:21:34barcelona psg man city whoever it's going to be if you've got a player like that who's not playing
00:21:39regularly for your team you're getting it's a massive miss it's like having folding out it's
00:21:42like having bruno fernandez out from man united all these players that play in that position they are
00:21:46the ones that create the chances they're the ones that really make the team tick and tonight he was
00:21:50by far a standout player nadine we heard michael arteta talk about the the clean sheet which he was very
00:21:55pleased about particularly as he said just three days after playing a really tough game against newcastle david riah with a
00:22:01fantastic save in that game yeah absolutely it's an incredible save and i think this is the way that
00:22:06arsenal have been because at times when they're not defensively solid as a unit he can find a way to
00:22:10make a save like look at that to be able to react in the way that he did because the run from pedence
00:22:15into the box getting from the ben white that's a great contact and probably more often than not
00:22:18you're thinking you're willing off thinking that's a goal but to be able to stretch like that to have
00:22:22that strong a hand to get it over the bar is something that those defenders appreciate something
00:22:26we've seen a lot from arsenal the last few years and he's very much a huge part of why they're so
00:22:30defensively good so defensively they're very strong and they also have depth in terms of their
00:22:35attacking talent as well rory is that going to be the the difference for arsenal this season yeah it
00:22:39looks very much like kind of arsenal and liverpool the top two in the premier league last season
00:22:42have taken different approaches that liverpool have gone and got a little bit of stardust we'll find
00:22:46out later if it's working and arsenal they spent a lot of money this summer but they did it on on
00:22:50options because i think last season what happened was that when saka was out they dipped a bit when
00:22:55odegaard was out as nicky says they dipped a bit and when both of them both of them were out they dipped quite a lot
00:23:00and they've tried to address that and if you look at look at their bench tonight look at the players
00:23:03they can throw on look at the players that didn't come on to the pitch to the pitch they have i think
00:23:07the strongest squad in the premier league which is saying something given given the competition
00:23:12and it means that they're set up to compete on four fronts and obviously two of those fronts matter
00:23:16a lot more to them than the other two but it's hard to see anybody with all those ingredients that
00:23:20depth the defensive strength the fact they do have goals in them the creativity that odegaard and
00:23:24ese and saka offer that's it's quite a good mix yeah quite a good mix especially when you're
00:23:29defending and keeping clean sheets and your goalkeepers in fantastic form as well it's a nice
00:23:33balance to have in yeah it is and i think with this arsenal team today like they made three or four
00:23:38changes to the game which was a tough game away at newcastle and the team felt exactly the same
00:23:42which is huge credit to them now after defeat by barcelona in match week one newcastle united took on
00:23:48belgium's union saint-gillois here's julian laurent to pronounce it properly and tell us a bit more
00:23:53about them of this season's four champions league debiting the most remarkable story matches belong
00:24:00to belgium's royal union saint-gillois once a powerhouse the brussels club won 11 national titles between 1904
00:24:09and 1935. since then nothing no sausage or saucisse i would say over there just a slow drift into financial

00:24:23sparking a remarkable turnaround and return to the top flight union's unlikely revival has marked it as
00:24:29a hipster's favorite and this may 90 years on they finally reclaimed the belgian title in style
00:24:36the secret smart data-driven scouting straight from the brighton playbook captain by englishman christian

00:24:49mccallister brother of liverpool's alexis on the score sheet after nearly a century in the shadows
00:24:57union are back bold data-fueled and ready to take on europe's finest your commentator is steve bauer
00:25:05mccallister brother of liverpool's alexis on the score sheet after nearly a century in the
00:25:10home of rivals and elect the rome stadium not meeting uefa requirements but still plenty of noise inside it
00:25:20baltimore did well the german had already been fouled to free king
00:25:26newcastle keen to maintain this recent momentum nilanga
00:25:35that's useful almost came to voltammar it came to tonali and newcastle are in front
00:25:43and it's a perfect start in brussels
00:25:45and he actually took the free kick quickly excellent delivery here from ilanga which
00:25:56voltammar couldn't get to and tonali actually side foots that towards the german
00:26:05who touches it in
00:26:06so tonali hits it there and voltammar looks as though he gets that first touch
00:26:17and wheels away to celebrate what will be his third newcastle goal already in six appearances
00:26:25and the pair this is rodriguez superb footwork but botman stuck to the task
00:26:38managed to block the path of the ecuador international and concede the corner
00:26:45el hatch with it off the head of ilanga zorgan
00:26:49it took a little ricochet along the way into the ground probably wasn't going in but nick clope didn't know that
00:27:08nicely done by voltammar
00:27:14here goes ilanga again up against niang
00:27:19was he caught there by layson he was it's a penalty to newcastle
00:27:25well anthony ilanga has been so positive so sharp in this first half
00:27:30and that's not the first uncomfortable moment
00:27:33for niang and for layson layson dived in here committed mistimed penalty kick
00:27:42and it is anthony gordon who is going to assume responsibility
00:27:46feels a huge moment in the game he got his first ever goal in europe against barcelona on match day
00:27:55one can he follow it up with a penalty in brussels he can brilliantly dispatched
00:28:02and less than three minutes to half time newcastle have a 2-0 away lead and that was clinical
00:28:11from anthony gordon and he's put newcastle in a commanding position just before the break
00:28:19miley
00:28:26in from gordon that was awkward voltammar was hunting
00:28:35layson did really well to get it away
00:28:37and the referee is being sent to the screen here
00:28:44to check a potential penalty the var has spoken to him his swiss colleague
00:28:52and the word appeals out there for handball it's feddy layson
00:28:57clearly hits his arm does he move it towards the ball is it unnatural
00:29:06no another newcastle penalty
00:29:09and you did sense that was coming once
00:29:12schneider was sent over to the screen
00:29:15it's a second penalty
00:29:18one has already been scored by anthony gordon
00:29:20can he do it again he can and what a position he's put his team in
00:29:283-0 away from home they lead union san juuas
00:29:34and they have dampened all the party spirit of the first home game in the champions league
00:29:41for the champions of belgium
00:29:43ice cool again from gordon two really well dispatched penalties
00:29:50on the back of the opener which was credited to voltammar
00:29:56what a statement scoreline in brussels 3-0 to newcastle
00:30:04effort from the substitute which is well saved by pope
00:30:09every question that he's been asked tonight nick pope he's had the answer for
00:30:16buffal denied
00:30:18sorgans corner no short anthony gordon
00:30:23able to dispossess buffal and there might be a counter on here for newcastle
00:30:26asula
00:30:30can he pick the pass for harvey barnes
00:30:32he certainly can it's four for newcastle harvey barnes in on the act with his first ever
00:30:41champions league goal and this is a very very impressive result for newcastle united
00:30:50gordon went it back on the edge of his own penalty area and from that moment on the counter was on
00:30:56could asula pick the pass he could and barnes did the rest what a much-needed tonic this has been
00:31:07for newcastle united union sanjo asnil newcastle four
00:31:14we knew it'd be difficult we knew they're a good team and in really good form tactically i think it
00:31:18stacked up exactly how we expected it to be i'm very pleased with our off the ball play and how we
00:31:25defended all through the game and it was just great to see us return to scoring goals yeah i
00:31:30think we've lacked a bit of creativity a bit of it's just a lack of good football in general i think
00:31:34we've we've defended really well we've been organized but we've lacked that that spark and
00:31:38that creativity so we really wanted to put emphasis on getting that back tonight and i thought we did
00:31:42well after the drama and the disappointment of the arsenal game at the weekend newcastle found
00:31:47it much easier against sancho was i know we heard eddie howe saying it was a difficult game as they
00:31:52expected but they they made it look pretty straightforward yeah absolutely they did it
00:31:56wasn't necessarily down to unique unique union sanjo excuse me by the way that's all right we'll get
00:32:01jules in exactly jules where i but i thought the way that they played they were very much on the
00:32:05front front as anathalie gordon said they need to find some creativity defensively they've been solid this
00:32:08year but if you're going to go out and sort of win these games in europe especially away from home
00:32:12you need to have that creativity and they will certainly have that today nicky i want to ask
00:32:16you about anthony alanga because you've worked with him a lot throughout his career haven't you
00:32:19yeah great young player uh obviously a bit older now he's moved on a little bit a couple of clubs
00:32:24um but fantastic young footballer very very pacey but always struggled with the final
00:32:28bit of the game you know the creative bit that crosses the goals but now he's got to a level it's a
00:32:33fair at forest as well but now getting to the areas taking people on and putting some amazing balls
00:32:38in the box we can see there and i think he's just matured over the last 18 months
00:32:42with that final little bit and got to know his game because they're just 100 miles now he's
00:32:46slowing himself down he's getting in the right positions and really concentrating on putting
00:32:49that final ball in there's another great cross here and i'm just looking not to put the ball in
00:32:54one thing i really like about him is his direct as well you know all his all his career has been
00:32:58direct and he knows what he wants to do he wants to take his man on get at him and and try and create
00:33:02chances and the amount of good balls he put in tonight it was amazing it's a shame that i didn't get a goal
00:33:07off one of them but he's literally he really attacks the defender every time he gets it and
00:33:12here you can see he's out wide and all he wants to do is get into the box get into the box attempt
00:33:17the guy into the tackle and straight away is a penalty that's brilliant performance by the boy tonight
00:33:21and it's it's just reward for me he's a really good professional he works really really hard and
00:33:26he's obviously been working out in his final delivery his final balls in terms of adding that that final
00:33:31bit to his game just tell me a bit about the kind of work that would that would go into something like
00:33:35that because he clearly has the natural talent and then it's just about refining it well i think
00:33:39you find a lot of them with young players like real naturally raw powerful quick players that
00:33:44always lack that little bit of um technical little bit at the end and and that's what he did doing
00:33:49and one-on-ones with uh with defenders you know passive defenders getting around cones crossing the ball
00:33:54but he used to do it always do at pace and i think it's really important with with young players
00:33:58to tell them to slow down and getting that final bit you speak to any top professional who's crossing the
00:34:02ball particular the pacey bit comes first slow down put the ball in and tonight he was the best
00:34:06best player on the pitch and that's for newcastle it's almost a similar point to to arsenal in terms
00:34:11of the depth of their squad compared to the last time that they were in the in the champions league
00:34:15and how much better equipped they are this time around well yeah it's really nice to see eddie how
00:34:19experimenting with with bold tactics like playing right-footed winners on the right wing but they
00:34:23do have that they do have that depth they've for all these acting dominated the summer they recruited really well they
00:34:29kind of strengthened every area of the team and they look like they can maybe not win the champions
00:34:33lead but they can compete go much further i think and not let it affect their lead form which is crucial
00:34:38now a massive game tonight last year's winners paris saint-germain visited barcelona your commentator is
00:34:44steven wyatt
00:34:49the elite matchup is deprived of some of its sparkle barcelona without rafinha and fermín lopez
00:34:56lewandowski only on the bench but lamin yamal is fit for a first start in six
00:35:03lamin yamal what a pass that is and somehow ferran torres has been prevented from scoring
00:35:13well lamin yamal has scored or created a goal in every game he's played for club and country so far this
00:35:20season a run that was so very nearly continued there well this is exactly what the champions league revamp
00:35:31hoped to achieve meetings between its most celebrated clubs with points rather than progress at stake
00:35:40lamin yamal
00:35:41lamin yamal
00:35:44pedri
00:35:45rashford ferran torres
00:35:49quite brilliant from barcelona
00:35:54pedri to rashford
00:35:57and ferran torres provided the decisive final touch
00:36:01and in this meeting of champions league heavyweights it is barcelona who lead psg by a goal to nil
00:36:10luis enrique will recognize a vast improvement is required from the visiting team
00:36:15luno mendes helped on chance to equalize taken senemai ulu
00:36:25and the youngster whose previous champions league goal came in the final of last season
00:36:30has scored again on a big night in european football's elite competition
00:36:36forward towards ferran torres
00:36:44lamin yamal ferran torres again rashford awaiting the cross
00:36:47sebani's there but he hasn't got the ball away charge for daniel mo lamin yamal
00:36:53psg survive with a heroic block on the line
00:36:56he says he's barcelona through and through he feels the affection he will be passed up
00:37:07all of his life but luis enrique is trying to find a way for his current team to emerge victorious
00:37:14tonight kang in lee so close and it was all his own work completely surrounded by opponents
00:37:25but he got a purposeful shot away
00:37:31vetina hakimi
00:37:36it's a wonderful pass which gets the finish it deserves from gonzalo ramos
00:37:43a ruthless and devastating counter that looks sets to decide a game between two of the big beasts of
00:37:52european football well they are but they weren't necessarily playing the big beasts of of players
00:37:59partly through through injury and this is this is what they they did last season in the champions
00:38:04league as well rory yeah particularly psg it was an element of phony war about this i think because
00:38:08you had no kovar stella you had no dembele the ballon d'or very important to you kelly you had um had no
00:38:13desiree duway and then barcel are missing two goalkeepers to staden and juan garcia rafinha's not
00:38:19there gavi's out the knee injury again so this isn't necessarily how these teams will look
00:38:23if they meet in the latter stages and to be honest even though obviously barcel lost tonight last
00:38:28minute you can see plenty of reasons to believe that they they will both be forces in this competition i
00:38:33think and yet even with those those missing players psg did still manage to get that that late winner
00:38:37yeah don shallow ramos who scored it is a really interesting player because he's he's started quite
00:38:41a lot of games this season but he's mainly used as a substitute this is barcelona's high line this
00:38:45will be the same problem for them as it was last season they brought christensen on at this point
00:38:49and i don't know whether that's disorganized everybody it's a brilliant ball from ashraf hakimi
00:38:53and a great finish from ramos he's played a bit more this season than he than he might have expected
00:38:58to because of those injuries but what was strange was that in this game luiz enrique started two kids
00:39:04ahead of him ramos is a i think a 64 million pound striker portuguese international really experienced
00:39:10came on as a sub in the um in the super cup and and denied tottenham victory and yet there's still
00:39:16that quite slight question mark over whether luiz enrique trusts him but that's a that's a fair
00:39:20old player to bring on off the bench for the last five minutes of a game yeah it works and it's
00:39:25certainly worked he's quite good at it and he's i think that's three now that he's stored off the
00:39:28bench all really late and whether that's how they see him as a as a particular sort of substitute weapon
00:39:33i don't know but it worked for them tonight yep it worked for them tonight now liverpool chelsea and
00:39:38spurs are still to come after some sights and sounds from around the continent
00:39:56oh
00:40:08on tuesday night premier league champions liverpool traveled to turkey to face galatasaray
00:40:22your commentator simon brotherton
00:40:27liverpool return to istanbul the city where they so improbably trapped in the champions league final 20
00:40:33years ago as they look to build on a winning start against the galatasaray side smarting after a 5-1
00:40:40thrashing in frankfurt on the opening night
00:40:42slid forward off the boot of yunis at gun could be an early opportunity here as alisson comes out
00:40:55to deny balashalpa yulmaz liverpool's back line tested here really good early chance this for galatasaray
00:41:03nicely done by cody gacpo and here now is hugo ekitike
00:41:16blocked on the line
00:41:17and florian burts in the end inadvertently gives torreira the opportunity to clear
00:41:28liverpool so close to taking the lead but torreira now tries to turn the tables
00:41:33and sends barashalpa yulmaz on his way up against soposlai
00:41:37ottiman waits in the middle he's down he wants the penalty kick and the referee's given it
00:41:44liverpool caught on the break moments after almost scoring at the other end
00:41:49barashalpa yulmaz with the run at soposlai the referee certainly had a clear view
00:41:58and as soposlai challenged the referee looking straight at it pointed straight to the spot
00:42:05it's otiman against alisson and it's 1-0 galatasaray
00:42:12that's what they paid the big money for
00:42:14big moments on the biggest stage in europe there are none bigger than the champions league and the
00:42:20nigerian delivers again and osinette is the first nigerian player into double figures in terms of goals
00:42:29in the champions league proper well we have a match on here and we have quite an atmosphere
00:42:40gap
00:42:41this hands in the air as does from pong vietz brings the save from urchan chucky
00:42:51flojan vietz still looking for his first liverpool goal he scored six goals in ten previous matches in the champions league
00:43:01that's van dieck up there kerkhez with the shot eketike going in
00:43:05now the tassaray survive intense pressure and plenty of it here
00:43:19now it's with frimpong who takes the pass from ditz
00:43:22still frimpong oh and eketike almost sneaking it in at the near post
00:43:31and finally barashalpa yilmaz comes away with the ball and the whistle blows
00:43:40really good play from jeremy frimpong and eketike fantastic improvisation
00:43:53and it stays at one nil liverpool living so so dangerously there it's alisson to the rescue
00:44:14and it remains galatasaray one liverpool's players gathered around their goalkeeper here
00:44:23who would appear to have an issue well so far liverpool's night not getting any better
00:44:29alisson alisson forced off the field through injury
00:44:36this is jones
00:44:42and alexander isaac he's just come off the bench gets the shot in with his first touch
00:44:50just a bit of a scuffed effort
00:44:52torreira trying to hold up so boslai
00:45:00alexis mccallister across canate tries to fire it in
00:45:07liverpool with a penalty in the 88th minute yellow card for the goalkeeper urchan chakir
00:45:13and the referee deeming that that will be a penalty kick he ended up kicking the underside of the
00:45:22defender's boot it is of course being checked and the referee is being asked to go and look
00:45:31and the defender gets to the ball first and clears it it will not be a penalty it's a massive moment in
00:45:39the evening and just when liverpool saw a route back to at least a point it's been snatched away
00:45:46it's finished galatasaray one liverpool nil we are sometimes a bit outsmarted in situations like this
00:45:54and i cannot blame dom for the situation but they make from a 20 percent penalty maybe 100 penalty and
00:46:01that is something um um what is very smart of them and that makes it two defeats in a week for
00:46:09liverpool so where's it going wrong nadam yeah thank you kelly so this defeat for liverpool
00:46:15obviously you can lose games but it's the manner in which you do it sometimes and there are one or
00:46:19two issues that liverpool have shown in this game which we've seen a little bit already this season
00:46:22and they caused the problem again in this match i think one of the biggest issues that they found
00:46:26was being passive defensively as you can see from this goal kick yes liverpool are all in good
00:46:31position but ultimately are you affecting the opposition he's got good time good possession and there are
00:46:36two galatasaray players who are basically forcing back four liverpool defenders this shouldn't really
00:46:40be the case and you want the two center half to maybe be a bit more aggressive they've got the
00:46:44strength they've got the ability to defend one v one so why can't you do that but instead you know
00:46:48it's a way in the champions league these are good sides and when they find space they can find
00:46:51opportunity galatasaray get the ball into the midfielder here nobody's really laid the glove on him
00:46:56and then he can play a pass through there and it ends up having to be a really big important save from
00:47:00alisson something we've seen a lot so far this season and here for example the passive nature
00:47:05verse had the ball they lose it that's fine this happens in football but why can't we have
00:47:09curtis john's being a bit further forward to try and sustain the attack make it uncomfortable for
00:47:12the opposition again because you don't want these good players to have time and space but instead
00:47:17here he is he's got time he's taking extra touches torreira drops into that midfield area
00:47:21and as soon as he gets the ball and he gets played to him he's looking for the danger on that far side
00:47:25because he knows that's a matchup that his team likes he's got an attacking midfielder playing right
00:47:29back and now it's one v one away in the champions league the outcome it's a penalty that's a huge
00:47:34disappointment from a liverpool standpoint but as well as that there were moments like this from
00:47:37ryan gravenbirch he barely gives the ball away but in this game it happened so many times that every
00:47:42time it did there was an opportunity for galatasaray aside they didn't create too much by themselves
00:47:46but liverpool gave it to him like this here this is one minute before half time and he's one yard away
00:47:51from giving away a penalty when his side were already down curtis john's again here really good
00:47:54footballers but dilly dallying on the ball like that it's such a big concern because you thought after
00:47:59happens once it won't happen again but it kept happening and kept happening here gravenbirch is in a horrible
00:48:03position it's 50 50 between himself and awesome man but he loses that awesome man on a different
00:48:08day maybe he finishes that and i think the biggest concern in this moment is off the back of this
00:48:13chance alison gets injured alison's now out for a certain amount of time and he's missing the game
00:48:17on the weekend and most of these issues are self-inflicted i think liverpool need really need to look
00:48:22at this because otherwise this could be a problem that will continue to cost them yeah those errors that
00:48:27liverpool are giving away that are leading to shots leading to goals uh 10 and three for those only
00:48:34chelsea and rail of yedo are worse in europe's top five leagues across all competitions this season
00:48:41there are lots of reasons why something like that is going to happen rory individual errors being being
00:48:46one of them but it's part of the reason the fact that liverpool are integrating so many new players
00:48:51honest lot said it in the the build-up to the game they used two new fullbacks in there for example as
00:48:56well yeah it does feel a little bit like maybe they've they've done everything all at once i
00:49:00remember when um when andy robertson came in at liverpool that alberto moreno who wasn't the
00:49:04world's greatest left back played i think for the first three months of that season to let robertson
00:49:09get used to the system whereas slot has kind of thrown kirkes and jeremy frimpon particularly
00:49:14straight in and said right that's it we're changing this around what's difficult to work out and nedim
00:49:19touched on it in his analysis is is to what extent is it that the system isn't quite working the
00:49:23relationships aren't there and to what extent is it just that players are individually playing
00:49:28poorly because as nedim said last night as against palace it felt like the the most creative force
00:49:34against liverpool was liverpool's own players rather than galatasaray and that that could be just a thing
00:49:39about form or it might be that the system isn't right having said that they're playing in a really
00:49:44difficult atmosphere in galatasaray or in istanbul at galatasaray and we talk about this a lot nikki and and
00:49:52often atmospheres don't affect players too much but is that one something different yeah that's a
00:49:57special one that's probably the most electrifying atmosphere i've ever played in it's um that it's
00:50:03absolutely wild from the minute you pull in on the coach two hours before it's it's it's buzzing
00:50:08you're gonna need to remind because this is 31 years ago so you might need to remind people
00:50:12i've had hair there as well um yeah it's it's just one of them one of them places that when you walk out
00:50:17with a win you smile if you don't you don't you just think i've just been to hell it's just such a
00:50:23an impressive place to go and play football and like you say they're singing there two and a half
00:50:26hours before but that's the beauty of the european cup you you champions league you're there all the
00:50:31time you're going to all these different places to go and play and it's such a an amazing amazing
00:50:35feeling to do especially as a young hairy-headed footballer like myself now in the midst of a domestic
00:50:43blip chelsea welcomed portugal's benfica to stanford bridge with a special visitor in the opponent's
00:50:49dugout please don't call me arrogant because what i'm saying is true i think i'm a special one
00:51:00my passion for football and my passion for the job is immense
00:51:05i love to work why chelsea i'm european champion so i'm not one of the bottom
00:51:18chelsea belongs to my history i belong to chelsea history
00:51:27so it's really to go home
00:51:29i want to win i want to win
00:51:38during the game that's my birthday
00:51:43that's the only thing that matters
00:51:48that's football
00:51:55commentary comes from jonathan pierce
00:51:59no real star names in the benfica line-up but in terms of champions league experience
00:52:05they've played five times the number of games in this competition than chelsea's young side
00:52:13kukurea gave it away here's luke bakia
00:52:17now shudakov
00:52:20it's hit the post gone away for a corner
00:52:22and benfica going very close in the opening eight minutes just pushed onto the post by sanchez
00:52:28so that's a good save chelsea without key players barma missing a course
00:52:36and augusto quickly away to netto
00:52:39chelsea making the pitch big
00:52:40it's a brilliant move by chelsea watch the run here from the bottom of your picture he was seen by netto
00:52:58great run around the back and slammed into his own net by richard rios
00:53:04one nil to chelsea well there is a player and a half president of benfica rui costa
00:53:11i remember he dragged portugal back into it against england in the european championship in belgium
00:53:17kukurea plays into george big chance
00:53:20chubin drops to the ground and makes the same
00:53:23good and should have been two here kukurea brought it down very well indeed set up for george
00:53:28didn't clear his feet quickly enough
00:53:32luka bakio very strong persistent and that's a good ball arsonist
00:53:39laid out wide here to
00:53:41chelsea into the run by baronaccia and there's an offside flag raised
00:53:47and he looks if he was on there chelsea good movement good football by benfica
00:53:52over an hour played the game is not safe lorenzo mareska
00:53:56charl pedro then it's just lent with an arm just on the pitch and he's caught baron a share
00:54:02sent off late in his brighton career for the use of an elbow and he gets a yellow card he hasn't touched
00:54:06the ball
00:54:10chelsea scamper forward six players on the counter get it to kukurea on the outside
00:54:16and to bernandez crowd went in to shoot played in to the young precocious estival
00:54:25goes too early ooh that's tight that's tight
00:54:30and chosen mourinho though we'll always talk the talk we'll know that the champions league is a bit beyond benfica
00:54:38we're into the last 45 seconds of stoppage time and joao pedro has lifted at first he's going to get a second yellow
00:54:46and chel pedro is sent off another chelsea player to be red carded this season
00:54:52in discipline has hit them yet again and chel pedro came on after 61 minutes is sent off five minutes in
00:54:59the stoppage time a game of huff and puff and solid challenges but it's the first win of the champions
00:55:05league season for the world champions chelsea won benfica nil
00:55:10well chelsea beat their former boss jose mourinho he didn't have quite the homecoming that he would have
00:55:15wanted and but for chelsea although they got the win there was another red card in this game the
00:55:20difference being this time that they managed to to win it is discipline an issue twice as a coincidence
00:55:27three might be seen as a pattern yeah it's not ideal is it for a for a manager to have that and i think
00:55:32it's something they've got a nip in the bud pretty quickly because it's given them a real uphill challenge
00:55:35for every game and i think it's a bit unfortunate the first one from honest i don't think that's a blatant
00:55:39elbow to the head i think it's a bit unfortunate but um yeah if he's look there he's not i don't
00:55:45yeah he's very unfortunate there i don't think that's a booking i think it's hit him on the shoulder
00:55:49but even so you've got to be a bit careful once you've been booked and obviously he wasn't he's
00:55:52just gone here put his foot up we've seen earlier on with eric dyer the foot up in these games you
00:55:57might get away with him a little bit in the premier league but in european games you've got no chance and
00:56:01and you're off and yeah we're very unfortunate the first one but the second one is a stupid red card
00:56:06you try to yell a card after you just had one a bit earlier but having three red cards in four
00:56:10games it's something they've got a nip in the bud pretty quickly because again it's it's killing
00:56:14you it's killing your chances of winning and it also means we're talking about that rather than
00:56:18mareska kind of bringing to an end this slight blip that he's had domestically yeah for sure and in
00:56:24some ways it's probably a good thing this record didn't really make a difference in terms of the
00:56:27scoreline but yeah if there's going to be a discipline issue then i think he's going to have to address
00:56:31that head-on because they can't really afford to be losing games like we've seen in the premier league
00:56:34because before you know it that sense of like confidence and belief within the side as well
00:56:38starts to diminish but i would say this one for me is probably a little bit unlucky today but as
00:56:42nicky said it's a european red card probably not a premier league one no but you have to play as
00:56:46though you're you're playing in in europe yeah exactly don't make any tackles yeah i think i think
00:56:50i think the first one's on the fortune once you get that then slow yourself down the next one i think
00:56:53that's the that's the unfortunate bit yeah and it means that mareska this could have been a really
00:56:57difficult week for him off the back of previous results previous red cards and now he manages to get that
00:57:02win okay with the with the gerard pedro red card as well it's a bit of respite but then it's
00:57:06it's chelsea liverpool the battle of the individual errors on saturday
00:57:12just focus on europe for now that's too much to be getting into and now tottenham trekked to the
00:57:16arctic circle on tuesday night to face norway's bodo glimt in a repeat of last season's europa league
00:57:21semi-final mark scott watch this one
00:57:29porro a bit too telegraphed burke was onto it
00:57:34here can it's a handy pass and then it's come here for burke who's had a hit and vicario somewhat
00:57:43dramatically fists it over the bar now burke to have a smack goalwards and vicario could really have
00:57:50caught that popped off here to haugert he's looking for the return to björkann and he's got the cross in
00:58:01it's a penalty well it's a really rash challenge here as björkann goes to put the ball into the area
00:58:14it's a shocker from casper who and a let-off for tottenham hotspur
00:58:35evie
00:58:36how could it's opened up here brilliant absolutely brilliant from jens keter haugert
00:58:48to give boda glint a deserved lead against spurs
00:58:56spurs sloppy in midfield evie took full advantage by picking out haugert
00:59:03who picked out the far corner with a beauty knew what he wanted to do
00:59:11and executed it to a tee
00:59:17okay flattens spurs just look a bit flat themselves
00:59:26porro will whip this in it's a good ball and it's off the post
00:59:30johnson and in and spurs immediately back level
00:59:39they are going to check a potential foul as the ball came in
00:59:45mickey van der fen there has got a hold of odin beautif's shirt
00:59:53and indeed the goal is struck off and it remains
00:59:58boda glimps one spurs nil
01:00:06alarm bells ringing here haugert
01:00:09wonderful oh my word
01:00:11that is absolutely sensational from jens petter haugert to double boda glimps lead
01:00:22his second is even better and tottenham hotspur have been blitzed by a double of very high standards from haugert
01:00:33good ball and spurs back in it mickey van der fen
01:00:40thumping header from the captain
01:00:42just what spurs needed they have been pretty poor throughout
01:00:50but have got themselves a foothold
01:00:54first ever champions league goal for mickey van der fen
01:00:57chevy simon's finding mohammed kudas
01:01:02kudas's ball is cute and it's off the bar
01:01:06destiny doggy denied
01:01:11so close to coming from two nil down to level the scores
01:01:16porro that's useful archie gray
01:01:22it's in spurs have leveled heartbreak for bodo glimps as spurs fight back to snatch a point
01:01:35it's actually gone down as an own goal by gestine gunderson
01:01:40so yet again tottenham come from behind this time to to earn a point but bodo glimps
01:01:47and jens petter haugert in particular looking fantastic in the early stages of that game
01:01:52yeah 100 i think it's this team that you know we haven't really seen play at this champions league
01:01:56level but here's the local boy here's the star here's the number 10 having a big impact for them
01:02:00and i loved how good he was in terms of how he attacked the patience to stay out wide here when
01:02:04the ball's not on his side but as soon as it comes to him he's got time to make a decision and
01:02:07that is such a good ball i think we saw throughout this game some of the quality that he had running
01:02:12with the ball without the ball and with the finishing as well but again he's patient there
01:02:16he holds his position he's always looking to try and find a good pass a good shot a good opportunity
01:02:21and that one that's a good strike but unfortunately just just way off the target but maybe there's
01:02:26something that's going to be coming again showing the patience holding his width and then once he gets
01:02:30people isolated here he's looking for that space you could probably say the defending could be better
01:02:34to be completely truthful but it's a fantastic finish and that was with his right foot what's
01:02:39it like on the other side we'll sell this we'll sell that and send that into the corner with the
01:02:42other side he's just one header away from a perfect tactic wasn't he so it's great to see a player from
01:02:47that area doing so well on what is you know one of the biggest stages in club football and rory what we
01:02:52would normally be saying is he might well get a big move away but he's had that and didn't really want
01:02:58it yeah so bodo kind of first came to the prominence around around covid in 2020 they won their first
01:03:03ever title and how do and patrick bird who's the captain with the stars of that team both from
01:03:07northern norway both local boys made good as nedim says and they both as you'd expect went away patrick
01:03:13bird went to lance and and how do went to ac milan and then on loan to frankfurt and they've both come
01:03:17back and speaking to people at bodo their view is basically they quite like playing football with their
01:03:22mates and it's really nice that they've thought you know what we can train in really professional
01:03:27surroundings playing the champions league or the europa league last season compete at european level
01:03:31both play for norway but we can do it in our hometown with our friends and that is genuinely
01:03:37really nice and football doesn't have that many really nice stories and bodo is one of them
01:03:41we should really talk about spurs very quickly nikki because yet again they've come from behind
01:03:45it's a two-all draw away in really difficult circumstances going into the arctic circle
01:03:50playing on the the artificial pitch and going two nil down and then fighting back yeah it's admirable for
01:03:55them um when you're playing in the champions league you go to all these far out beautiful wonderful
01:04:00places to go to and they're really difficult to play out people look back back at home and
01:04:03watching that thinking they should go and beat them five or six no it's not like that you go in
01:04:06there it's their world cup final they think they're going to get a big move when they play well it's
01:04:11really tough places to go and some of the places you go it's very tough to do and it's not as easy as
01:04:16as you go and win well it's time now for the rest of the goals from tuesday's ties
01:04:32slashed that by tappel off and there's not enough on that mestantuono is there first and it'll be a
01:04:37penalty mbappe scores this one emphatically put away by kilian mbappe
01:04:47that's like five out of five from the spot this season
01:04:53mbappe streaks through and clips the ball over kalmerza clinical
01:04:59rodrigo glides through the challenges there's mbappe there's the hat-trick
01:05:10rodrigo has beaten zorrokin it's camavinga and it's four
01:05:18camavinga it's bellingham helping it on for gonzalo garcia now it's brahim diaz and madrid have five
01:05:29a beautiful curling effort
01:05:46well given away nunis musa has pounced onto the loose ball nunis musa brilliant goalkeeping from yakas
01:05:55who's there again but doesn't make contact with the ball it is an atalanta penalty it is lazar smadzic
01:06:03and he coolly and calmly converts to level things up clipped in by smart ditch helped on
01:06:10and helped in mario pashalic has put atalanta in front
01:06:24was that yes giving it away and lacharo martinez could not miss
01:06:29it finds marcus to ram in shooting territory it's to ram it's dumfries it's two nil inter
01:06:41now taro making his way into the box
01:06:44little fit for bastoni and now taro finishes it off for three that will seal three points
01:06:49juliano who's beaten his man has found a cross and the chance is there and it's buried
01:07:02with his first goal in the red and white stripes
01:07:07griezmann near post how did that stay out with not for very long shoved in by lenormand and it's
01:07:122-0 atleti delvarez chasing against coke he's beaten him all ends up and griezmann makes it three
01:07:21it takes him to 200 goals for atleti
01:07:27here's knalf with a decent ball in and there's a goal burka on the score sheet
01:07:34in by alvarez it's for simeoni at the near post
01:07:38angle is tight santos with the block arriving is griezmann appeals for hand ball against amenda
01:07:47well it looks as though he does flick his hand at the ball there julian alvarez will take and he
01:07:55scores with such impudence again here
01:07:58oh it's a lovely tuck behind and igor taisha bearing down on goal no offside flag yet in he goes
01:08:12the first marseille goal for igor taisha
01:08:15and they're in again and they've got a second igor taisha obameyang nicely sit through they're in for
01:08:28three and it's mason greenwood igor paisha obameyang chance goal it's 4-0 that is absolutely superb from
01:08:40marseille
01:08:46lise now can work in space on to harry kane
01:08:53lise guerrero little one-off layoff there for guerrero to make it 2-0
01:09:01lise stepovers jackson and the cyprits are being torn apart in their own backyard tonight
01:09:10and kane still here harry kane again harry kane again and for pafos where will this night end up
01:09:21comes back for orsic here for pafos
01:09:24it's orsic who took on the shot and what a shot that was and pafos have a goal on the board
01:09:32rafael guerrero here for the chasing nicholas jackson who's onside here it's jackson for
01:09:38bayern but mikhail makes the save or lise
01:09:41and the play
01:09:52and the play
01:09:53and the play
01:09:53well after that win for bayern in cyprus the german tabloid built ran the headline
01:09:58the battle for bayern superstar the focus is on michael elise and added that liverpool want the former
01:10:05palace player to replace mo salah the attention in spain was on another frenchman both marker and
01:10:11ass featured real madrid star kilian mbappe after his hat-trick in the 5-0 win over kazakh side karat
01:10:18almati
01:10:21and both those strikers on fantastic form not just in this round of champions league matches they're
01:10:27reaching record levels the the pair of them as you might expect harry kane's been doing it
01:10:32for a little while now it's at 17 goals in nine matches for him 11 of them have come in his past
01:10:38five appearances for kilian mbappe it was a hat-trick it may now mean 60 champions league goals
01:10:43real madrid obviously with that thrashing of kairat in kazakhstan it's just incredible numbers
01:10:49and they've hit the ground running rory we should be asking what kilian mbappe can learn from harry kane
01:10:53shouldn't we really yeah they're both on fire kane it's not really a surprise and i do wonder as weird
01:10:59as it is to say about the inland captain whether we kind of underestimate what he's doing at bayern
01:11:05it has been astonishing his kind of productivity at bayern munich mbappe was the big question mark for
01:11:11me at real madrid this season does jabi alonso's job is to work out how to get like a coherent modern
01:11:16team out out of him and vinicius and he does seem to be doing it mbappe has there's something energized
01:11:23about mbappe this season i think that was maybe lacking a little bit last year and if you can sustain
01:11:28that he turns real madrid into a genuine force because he is potentially the best player in the
01:11:33world we've just kind of had a year where he's not really hit those hit those levels already looking
01:11:37at ballon d'or contenders it's all about the ballon d'or everything is a qualifier for the ballon d'or
01:11:43five more games from wednesday here's what happened
01:11:46touch off by silver and the shot which has hit the base of the post but he's in from zubir on the
01:12:02follow-up the captain awaits to score caravag's first goal of the night
01:12:07here's adai still adai good hit great goal emanuel adai relieving the pressure for caravag
01:12:22and sending them into dreamland again in the uefa champions league
01:12:30this pocket for the first time trying to cut in and get his shot away
01:12:35and they've lost it here there to take full advantage is kafane and leverkusenly
01:12:41pay us for giving it a go now and it does open up here for the equalizer brilliantly taken
01:12:51and they weren't behind for long ismael saibari levels it up
01:12:55there's a gap opening up which is closed just in time but pepe's onto it
01:13:07and goal george michael cance opens the scoring for via real
01:13:13it's kelly who's got his head to it first oh how about that from federico gatti
01:13:26center halves don't score goals like that do they
01:13:32parejo oh he's sold him short this is concesal it's still concesal
01:13:39francisco concesal punishing parejo and turning this match on its head
01:13:48and in vega to the rescue what a time that is to get his first goal for the club
01:13:56the last minute of the match to make it 2-2
01:14:04here's de bruyne
01:14:08now he really can run de bruyne to lead them to pick out hoyland huge chance
01:14:16sensational end to end from napoli
01:14:22nicely chopped inside by pedro gonzalves is back on the end of it now he appeals for a penalty
01:14:28now then politano snaked out a boot and sporting have a penalty
01:14:34it's luis suarez
01:14:36it's 1-1
01:14:44and floated in usefully and headed home wonderfully
01:14:48and jubble for rasmus hoyland
01:14:57first ever meeting between these two clubs
01:15:00and the me dangerous one nil
01:15:05swegson arriving at just the right time
01:15:09shabitzer
01:15:14you see this is lovely
01:15:16mecca brilliant goal
01:15:19well that's not been defended very well and athletic club are back in business
01:15:31Well there's been plenty of reaction from the players and after Napoli's win Rasmus
01:15:59Hoyland put on Instagram, Hoyland scores twice in the Champions League after two assists
01:16:03from Kevin De Bruyne, was not on my 2025 bingo card, two seasons in Manchester and he's
01:16:09got a bingo card.
01:16:10He's done well hasn't he, he seems to have fitted in really well there, he's obviously
01:16:14got a few people there, a few lads there that have played in England as well so he's fitted
01:16:19in really well and good luck to him, he had a bad time at Man United, I felt he got treated
01:16:24a little bit unfairly being a young player going through a big club with all that weight
01:16:27and he's shown us as the only main striker so good luck to him, I hope he goes there
01:16:31and does well.
01:16:32Yeah and nice for him to have Kevin De Bruyne creating the chances, that is 27 Champions
01:16:37League assists, it puts him above Zidane and Iniesta.
01:16:40But decent players there to be fair, as Nicky said it's good for him to get the opportunity,
01:16:45he's gone not to like a mid-level Italian side, he's gone to the league winners from
01:16:50last season and now he's been fed by De Bruyne and he's got a manager in Conte who knows that
01:16:54he's got some unfinished business in the competition as well.
01:16:57Rory we can't let you go without talking about Carabag.
01:16:59They're going to win it, they're going all the way Carabag.
01:17:02Why are we watching out for them?
01:17:04So I said to Chris Sutton on the radio a couple of weeks ago that Carabag I thought would be
01:17:08better than people expected, I'd seen them a lot in the Europa League and I didn't think
01:17:12they'd get into the Champions League and be embarrassed.
01:17:14I will admit, but not to Chris' face, that I didn't think they'd win their first two games
01:17:18but they have and it is a genuinely astonishing achievement, it's a really broad Champions
01:17:21League, this one with Kaira in it as well.
01:17:23Carabag have been a great story so far.
01:17:25They have been a great story so far as pointed out by you and now before we go we're going
01:17:29to see how that massive league table stands after just two games remember.
01:17:35So six sides still have a perfect record that includes five of Europe's traditional powerhouses
01:17:40and Rory's dark horses Carabag.
01:17:43At the other end there are just four teams without a point but that includes Champions League newcomers
01:17:49Kairat Almaty. It is still of course very early days.
01:17:56If you've missed any of the action you can see the goals from every Champions League game on the
01:18:00iPlayer, BBC Sport website and app. For more reaction from tonight check out the Football Daily
01:18:05podcast on BBC Sounds and there's live WSL on Friday night on BBC Three as Manchester United take on Chelsea.
01:18:13Time now for No Context UCL.
01:18:22So we're going with a bit of a Michael Jackson flavour to this one starting with The Way You Make Me Feel
01:18:29which you know is a slow start but we're going to get there. This one going for Earth Song or even Scream
01:18:35and the reason we're doing this is for Hamon. This one we thought might be beat it which I think is
01:18:46probably appropriate for that move and finally this Newcastle fan off the wall. All right that's not
01:18:53too bad isn't it? You happy with yourself? Always happy with myself later. I'm happy to see you.
01:18:58Thank you very much to all three of you. Well match week two in the Champions League has been a mixed bag
01:19:03for the English teams or as Rory might prefer it a carabag. Good night.
