Transcript
00:00right that's all right good afternoon lovely to speak to james from the band please dog hogan
00:06you are heading to the rope tackle art center in shoreham on october the 23rd and the band
00:12is in an interesting place you're kind of between albums you're you had a release last year which
00:18was much more spontaneous much more off the cuff much more simple and much more humorous and you're
00:23heading towards next year's release of an album which is at the more powerful emotional end of
00:28your range isn't it and you'll give both for sure i guess we we absolutely will we absolutely will we
00:34will um i think it takes people uh uh who haven't experienced the uh the seven-headed joy machine
00:40that is police dog hogan before a few moments to adjust to sort of the ricochet from sort of humor
00:49to very heartfelt and um to do things that are quiet things that are very loud we're seven
00:57piece group um once described as um pop music with all the wrong instruments and uh you know so is
01:05the band authentically both ends of that spectrum yeah i think so i think so we're all of a certain
01:12apart from emily our trumpet player who's who's younger but we are all experienced of the world
01:17so we're when we're unashamed about wearing our our uh our life and our emotions on our sleeves
01:25yeah and the album for next year it's got a a title with a metaphor behind it hasn't it the
01:31light at the top of the stairs the more you think about it the better it is as an album title it's so
01:36suggestive isn't it yeah it's called it's called the light at the top of the stairs and uh it really
01:42sort of uh is about is an image for me of safety uh emotional safety um and in a way emotion because
01:53it's uh it it takes one back to childhood and the single light that's left on in the house
02:00that allows you to feel safe at night as a child um and then there are a number of other interpretations
02:06that spring off that but we'll leave we'll leave those and from that point of safety it allows you to
02:11tackle some pretty serious issues doesn't it on the album exactly exactly um and it's the it is the
02:19light that invites you up the stairs as well when you come in and um yeah so we're thinking at the
02:25moment about the artwork and and working on that that's quite exciting we've got it and on a lighter
02:30note it's always worth telling the story why you are police dog hogan why we are police dog hogan uh
02:37well uh it it emanates it's a story as described as a story with a death wish because you already
02:43know the punchline but it actually emanates from a riot that uh oh well i should say that the fiddle
02:50player in the group eddie bishop is um is a barrister and that when he was a young barrister it was late
02:57at night he was tired and he was reading some police procedural notes on a a riot that had taken place on a
03:06uh um i think a housing estate in the outskirts of brighton and uh it's written in in uh standard
03:15procedural you know uh pc hewitt wpc studden uh pd hogan chief inspector so and so in bus to go to
03:25this riot and these litany of these names it was a very very shaggy dog story uh and we we needed a name
03:33because there comes a point where you need a name because there's going to be a poster
03:38for a gig or a record you know which that terrible terrible culmination of events
03:45um we were sitting in a pub in cornwall anyway eddie proceeded with this very very long story about
03:50how the van containing pc hewitt and wpc stuntman center etc arrived at the riot they um
03:58they uh deployed or disembust or whatever and every everybody they were all named were were deployed
04:06to the riot apart from pd hogan who was left in the van and he thought this is a probationary
04:13detective or something he's he's like obviously a young detective who's not hard enough to
04:18go to a riot and he's going to leave him in the van to sort of look after the van
04:22and it kicks off the riot steps up into a melee and uh pc hewitt is sent back to the van to deploy
04:35pd hogan he still hasn't clocked it yet so um pd hogan is brought to the riot and this is the moment of
04:44truth pd hogan vocalizes and lunges forward and bites the assailant and it's only at this moment
04:52that eddie realized that possibly he wasn't a probationary detective or whatever so and for
04:57for reasons that are lost in the midst of time extremely opaque now we thought that was hilarious
05:05and uh we settled uh in our infinite wisdom on on the idea that we were going to be called police
05:11dog hogan and fantastic well it's clearly served you over a number of years it's our name
05:19fantastic we're really good to speak to you again and the gig then is police dog hogan
05:25rope tackle arts center shoreham october the 23rd james sitting at the moment in greece good to speak
05:32to you and enjoy greece thank you very very much indeed that was a delight thank you
