Transcript
00:00Good morning. My name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Editor for Sussex Newspapers. Lovely this morning
00:06to speak to Darren Everest, fresh from the school run and Darren from the Overtones. And the Overtones
00:12this year, this Christmas, are celebrating 15 years. You've got dates in Eastbourne in our area
00:17and also Southampton. And it's all about balance, you were saying. The Overtones, a new person is a
00:23dad of two. And a really great place, aren't you? You've got the balance right between home life
00:28and industry and work and everything else. I mean, you're making it... Good morning, Phil. Thanks
00:33for having me. You're making it sound like I've got everything sussed. And I don't feel like that.
00:38But I'm going to go with it. And I'm going to say yes. No, no. All we can do is try our best in
00:42everything we do. And I try and be the best dad. And I try and be the best member of the Overtones
00:49I can be. And in every area of my life, I just try and do as best as I can. But what we were talking
00:54about just before was trying to get a balance in everything you do so that you don't burn
00:58out. And that's what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to be a dad when I'm at home. When
01:04I'm at work, I work as hard as I can. And I try and take care of myself when it comes
01:09to fitness. But it's all about balance. So, yeah, I think I'm doing OK at the minute.
01:13And for becoming a dad, that must give you a different perspective on the music industry.
01:19It definitely is. Yeah, exactly. It puts things in perspective because sometimes you feel like
01:25it means everything to you when you're when you're kind of saturated into this showbiz
01:30world of the music industry. And in the early days, I was definitely more anxious. I was
01:36constantly looking ahead. You keep hearing about successful artists at major labels that
01:41are being dropped because they didn't sell enough albums and didn't sell enough tickets.
01:44And you do start to worry. But over the years, you kind of realise what's important. And
01:49we've got an amazing fan base. And I guess we have them to thank for for everything still
01:54being here 15 years later. They call themselves the Toners. We call them the Toners. Yeah.
01:59And they're very dear to us. And they support us. And we see the same faces at every show
02:04on tour. And it's lovely.
02:05And the key thing is you've got independence as artists now, haven't you? Not signed to a major.
02:10Yeah. I mean, it was great while it lasted. We wouldn't change a thing. Five albums with
02:15Warners was amazing. And it put us in a position where we can sustain ourselves now. And we have
02:21our own machine kind of plodding along at a nice rate. And we're always working hard and kind of
02:25reaching for the stars. But it's important to be happy with where you're at. And, you know, a lot of
02:31people would love to do set out tours and perform to fans like we do.
02:35But we know we're lucky.
02:36And the really fantastic thing you were saying, that you're enjoying it more than you ever
02:39have done. That's something after 15 years, isn't it?
02:43Yeah, I think you relax into it a little bit. And you kind of learn what works. And you learn,
02:48you know, it's nice to feel a bit of nerves before you go on stage. But it's also nice
02:52to have a quiet confidence that, oh, we know we're going to kill it here. Let's go and have
02:56a great time. Let's give them a great night, you know. And you look left and right. And
03:00you see your best friends on stage. And we have a giggle. We don't take it as seriously
03:03as we used to in terms of, if Mike slides to the right, when he should have stood to
03:08the left, I'm going to call him out on the mic and tell the audience. And we do things
03:12like that. And the audience enjoy it. And we have a laugh and we enjoy it. And, you know,
03:16I think that's, I think you, I think you can see that. And I think that's why people
03:20across.
03:21Yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:23Brilliant. Well, lovely to speak to you, Darren. Happy 15th anniversary. You've got dates in
03:27Eastbourne and Southampton in our area. It's the Overtone's Christmas party tour coming up
03:32before long. Thank you so much. Thank you, Phil. Thank you.
