00:00The streets of St Helens are being paved with entertainment gold this Christmas time
00:05thanks to a star-studded cast ready to enchant Theatre Royal family audiences.
00:10This year's Pantos, Dick Whittington, with Emmerdale star Matthew Wolfenden in the title role.
00:16I've watched Pantos all my life, from being a kid.
00:19My mum and dad took me from being as young as I can remember, really.
00:25So I've grown up watching Pantos and now to be involved in it is great, yeah, it's fantastic.
00:31The show, which is packed with larger-than-life characters, dazzling costumes and scenery,
00:36is the theatre company's first ever production of this historic Panto.
00:41Because we do so many Pantos a year, we say, come on, let's mix it up and let's take the leap and produce Dick Whittington.
00:48And you know what, it's my favourite Panto.
00:50Back by popular demand as the character we love to hate is Timothy Lucas as the baddie King Rat.
00:57It's good, I'm glad to be back as the baddie.
01:00I'm, you know, near my hometown as well, but it's great to be back.
01:05Yeah, I love being the baddie, like you said.
01:08I do my best work when I'm a baddie, you know what I mean?
01:11So I'm buzzing about that.
01:13I've just got to get used to talking with these teeth.
01:14The show's also set to feature new West End-inspired 3D technology, which will take theatregoers young and old on an underwater journey.
01:23So the ship sinks and it goes underwater and the fishers fly over the audience, there's a shark.
01:28And then we've also introduced this year, the first time, a camera on stage.
01:31So a bit like the Coldplay thing, we pick out people in the audience and pick on them.
01:36So it's roles reversal, so it's really good.
01:38So don't sit on the front row.
01:40The thing about Panto is the fact that the audience is part of the pantomime.
01:47You go to a normal musical, you sit there, you're quiet, you watch the show, which is fantastic.
01:53However, you are part of the show as an audience member.
01:57So we want you to shout out.
01:59We want you to shout, he's behind you and scream when King Rat comes on and scream at Idle Jack.
02:05I can, it is, they are part of the show and that is the beauty of pantomime.
02:11It's such an art form within itself and it is such a Christmas tradition for a lot of people and a lot of families.
02:18Will our hero find his fortune and live happily ever after with his true love?
02:22Or will the dastardly King Rat and his gang succeed in foiling his dreams?
02:27I'm here to take over London.
02:29The show is set in London, all right?
02:32The pantomime's set in London.
02:35I'm a rat.
02:36I'm king of the rats, king of the rodents.
02:39I'm sick of being in the sewers and in the entries.
02:42It's time to upgrade my lifestyle.
02:45I want the penthouse and we deserve the penthouse.
02:48So we're coming to take over, not take part, all right?
02:52Dick Whittington will run at the St Helens Theatre right throughout the festive season until Sunday 11th of January.
